I would leave 0 stars if I could. I lost my sense of smell and taste in July, I was referred to Dr. Lipson in October. I've been a number of times and my last visit in January (5 months ago), Dr. Lipson was supposed to schedule an MRI. It's now May, I've called over 25 times trying to get someone on the phone to find out what's going on. I finally got someone on the phone today asking for my records to be sent to my new doctor and the receptionist let me know that NONE of my visits or records have been recorded. NONE of them. I've seen this doctor multiple times over months and they literally have no records of my visit. At this point, it's highly unlikely that I'll ever get my sense of smell or taste back. Dr Lipson has been my SPECIAL NEEDS BROTHER for many years. My mother always managed to escort him until her passing at 95 this last January. At his caregivers request, I took him to see Dr Lipson for a check up and to get forms filled out for a hearing aid available from MedICare or Calmed...anyway, the appointment went fine as usual, however; my brother has waited over 2 months for the paperwork. We have been calling, no one answers the phone and due to COVID, he is only working 2 days a week-even though everything has opened back up. This review is both for the doctor and the way the practice is run. The doctor is knowledgeable and really takes the time to understand his patients concerns. The first time I was in, he took about an hour to just listen, take notes and do an exam. Where is all went wrong..... As prednisone was not working and I was suspecting food allergies I went in to get some blood work done. After about a month when the results came back, I called the office and was told all was negative. I was skeptical that none of the 50 items I chose came back even a little positive. When the doctor went on an emergency medical leave without chatting with me about the results, I requested a copy. I was shocked to see that no food items were included, only molds trees and grasses. I called the receptionist and she insisted that it was a full results. I then proceeded to contact the lab ( a nightmare) to get a copy to confirm that somehow my food items got missed. Nope, the food items were there and I tested positive for many of them. If I hadn't reached out and took the word of the lady at the front, I would of never know that I was allergic. I also think that the doctor should of noticed that only half of the results got to him as I saw him frequently in the last few months. Ps you can never reach them by phone which makes it impossible to communicate and added to my month long attempt to get correct results. I am very disappointed and am now stuck with 800$ test results that I cannot read. read more

Dr. Lipson just removed my tonsils, and I am so extremely grateful to this man! He and his staff squeezed me into their busy schedule because they knew that I needed this surgery. My usual ENT had a three-month backup for consultations, but Dr. Lipson managed to meet with me within a few weeks. He took the time to examine my entire history, stayed late to perform the surgery despite hospital delays, and did such a good job that there has been hardly any bleeding and no complications. Wow, a real doctor! Who would have thought it would be so hard to find one? But sadly it is. I saw Dr. Lipson in the past but am no longer able to see him due to changes in my insurance, although his rates are very reasonable even for out of pocket charges. Due to my insurance change I am basically stuck with PAMF doctors who don't even compare to Dr. Lipson. At PAMF they won't let me change providers, don't look into my questions, and generally could care less. So it's a relief that Dr. Lipson is so fully focused on his patients and doesn't just refer you back to another ENT doctor that you saw. Dr. Lipson is very old fashioned. He is very thorough, spends a lot of time with you and he really cares. He is very knowledgeable and has been in practice for many, many years. I'm worried that he will retire any day, actually, which hopefully does not happen! The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that it is hard to communicate with his office (phone isn't always answered, also no nursing staff for questions or after hours phone number for emergenices), difficult to get records (not sure if they keep them on file, but they aren't electronically available), since he is a popular doctor it might be hard to get a soon appt if you need one urgently, and I'm not sure if he uses the latest high tech equipment available (not sure if this even matters but at PAMF they use a scope through your nose into your throat while Dr. Lipson looks into your throat using a mirror - although when I think about it, it's really cost effective since he basically charges $0 vs. $1.5K for a nasal endoscopy at PAMF). That being said, although operationally his practice isn't perfect, Dr. Lipson as a physician is excellent and that is something that is very hard to find these days. I wish I could see Dr. Lipson again and might resort to doing that if I can get an appointment, even though it will be expensive. read more

Dr. Lipson has been my ENT for over 15 years now, and I cannot express adequately what a prince of a doctor this man is. Unlike most of today's younger physicians, who just want to get you in and out of the office in less than 15 minutes, Dr. Lipson takes the time to ask you many questions and do a thorough examination. He will not prescribe antibiotics for sinus infections until he has first obtained a culture, which is something nobody seems to do anymore. He performed sinus surgery on me about 13 years ago, and I've relied on him ever since. Recently I had some personal issues, and he took the time to send me a hand-written note expressing his condolences! When Dr. Lipson retires, I will be one very distraught patient. I sincerely hope he can find a young doctor who is interested in building a practice based on mutual doctor/patient respect, careful diagnosis and utmost caring. read more

This is a review I didn't want to do, however, if Dr. Lipson reads his reviews, maybe he could respond to me personally Dr Lipson is great ENT. I worked for physicians for many years in the peninsula and referred almost all our patients to him exclusively. I was a patient of his myself on many occasions. I will get to what happened this Wednesday when I called the office to make an appointment for a client of mine. This particular client happens to be disabled so I called for her to set up the appointment. I needed to first find out if the doctor would be able to be examined in her wheelchair, and I was told by the office that they would get back to me and let me know They did in fact call back, said it wouldn't be an issue so I called to make an appointment That's where it all fell apart. The receptionist asked to speak with my client and I tried to explain that she wasn't able to speak with her as I wasn't with her and that I coordinated all her medical apts. From there she continued to "talk over" me until I had to plead with her to let me speak. I then tried to set up the apt and she was upset that I was asking for specific times if possible, I asked her if I could explain, when she rudely said " if you can make it brief"! After that she offered me one day in October, I asked if we could get it sooner, as my client can't hear(probably wax). She told be the doctor would call me, then she she simply slammed the phone down and hung up. To date I have NOT received a call and I don't expect this to happen. It's sad that a good, kind physician has someone be the point of contact for his practice. Unfortunately, it's impossible to get am appointment without going through the front office. read more

Dr Lipson is without a doubt the best ENT (and amongst the best doctors) I have been to. I went to Dr Lipson ten years ago when I had completely lost my voice and could barely speak. I had been to several doctors before this and they had prescribed steroids and all other manner of medications. Dr Lipson took plenty of time to talk to me, understand my full medical history, and within three weeks my voice was back. He really understands singers voices as well as ordinary people's voices. He is extremely thorough, gentle and a gem of a human being. He does not rush you. Fair warning, he does tend to get backed up because this thoughtful, non-rushed approach means that appointments later on in the day can get delayed. read more

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to see this Dr. because of the gross incompetence of Anette, his receptionist. I have honestly never encountered a medical professional so cavalier, rude, and unhelpful. I had an appointment scheduled at 3:30 pm yesterday, and I showed up - no one was there. The office was closed! The receptionist who works at the office next door mentioned this CONSTANTLY happens - she said the front desk of Dr. Lipson's office is extremely disorganized and there are often miscommunications around patient appointments. She also added that it's a real shame because Dr. Lipson is a wonderful doctor. Today I received a call from the office, and I agree wholeheartedly with all the reviews about Anette - she is incredibly unprofessional, lacks empathy, and is extremely unaccommodating/uncaring. She said: 1) My appointment was for Monday at 3:45, not Tuesday (if that's the case, why not call after a patient misses an appointment or call to remind patients?) 2) She "apologized" by saying: "I don't know what you want me to say, I'm sorry, but your appointment was Monday" which is a total non-apology. She refused to be helpful in rescheduling an appointment ("No-shows do not warrant any special treatment" - quote from her!). It's also not true - my appointment was very clearly for Tuesday at 3:30 pm. I highly recommend that patients take their business elsewhere - as long as Dr. Lipson employs someone so unprofessional and unhelpful in his front office, he is sending a real message about how much he values his patients (not at all). read more

I've found Dr. Lipson through yelp. I just read the last review about him being "caring" and other things. I had an appointment with him on April 13 and haven't noticed anything wrong with him then. I'd like to caution you about this doctor though. About a week after my appointment I called Annette and ask about the diagnosis and ask her to send it to me, because she told me that there isn't one available. The weeks were passing by, I kept calling, and Annette politely had been telling me that she conveys all the messages to him. I've never got any answer from him. He'd never called, never had told her what's going on. I've sent him a fax too requesting the information. I've been told that it can take up to two months for a doctor to issue a report. After two months, I've brought a letter to his office, which they have given to him. I've got no answer. One can imagine my frustration, because he's told me during the appointment, that he would need to schedule a CT scan for me. All this had worried me because if "doctor" says he needs to order a CT scan, it means he suspects something maybe going on. I've been also worried if there's something wrong, the delay would make things worse if not incurable as more time passes. I'm glad he had helped so many people, but I would never understand how a doctor could be unconcerned and unresponsive? read more

However it is a double-edged sword because the wait while in the office is excrutiating and he could be more efficient with his time. He has returned my call after hours showing me that he cares about his patients. This guy is a complete waste of time! I needed to get a surgery done and for insurance reasons I had to get it done before the end of the year. I came in and told him that I had to get this surgery done BEFORE the end of year. For the next 4 months, I got teased along with promises of 2 weeks, wait 2 more weeks. Surgery wasn't done. I can't breathe properly. I get to pay my huge insurance deductible all over again. Go America! On the plus side, their billing is prompt! Receptionist said he was looking at retiring. I moved to California in 1972 from the mid-west. I needed to have nasal surgery before I started working. The day I found Dr. Lipson, I felt like I struck gold. Forty-three years later, I still feel the same way. He has been the best doctor I have ever had in my life. He has the best bed-side manner, is very knowledgeable, has consistently been kind, compassionate, caring and explains things in a way a patient can really understand. He never talks down to you. Through the years Dr. Lipson has taken out my tonsils, performed a rhinoplasty which I feel changed my life for two reasons. It helped me to breathe so much better, plus it gave me the self confidence I lacked when I always felt like people were looking at my big nose while growing up. He did a fine job with the surgery. Dr. Lipson took care of me through many years of hospitalizations due to both upper respiratory tract problems plus the loss of my vestibular apparatus, the mechanism of the inner ear to the brain which allows a person to be in equilibrium and be able to balance. I had years of vertigo and imbalance through the process of losing this. He took a particular interest in this area of the inner ear and what I was living through. He helped me very much in explaining what was happening to me, and was comforting by never rushing me through an appointment when I needed to know what was going on with me medically. I have numerous medical problems and most doctors don't want to be bothered with a patient like myself, but Dr. Lipson has always been the consistently kind and caring doctor that is so hard to find today. Most doctors rush you in and out in 15 minutes but he will take whatever time is needed to help me understand whatever condition is in need of attention. I feel like a patient just can't find a doctor like Dr. Lipson today. He is like the old fashioned-style doctor who can no longer be found in this rushed medical climate today. I bless the day I found Dr. Lipson and can't recommend him highly enough. His office gal, Annette, is also very courteous, professional, and competent. Years back, a patient may have had to wait a while in the waiting room, but I haven't found that to be the case in the past couple/several years. I visited Dr. Lipson with a throat ailment and was very impressed. He took his time to listen to my problem and offered thoughtful followup questions and analysis. He even brought out a model to show me the structure of the throat and help me understand my problem. He's been a Dr. for a long time, but none of his enthusiasm or skill has waned. I have had trouble with ENT issues for over 50 years, and I think I've probably seen about 50 doctors! The last two years my allergies were really debilitating, and the doctor I was currently seeing had me coming to his office weekly for allergy shots. My GP said it didn't appear these shots had done anything, and recommended Dr. Lipson to me. Because I was so congested, she called him herself, and he (personally) agreed to fit me into his schedule. I arrived and waited (as I expected to do since he was doing me a huge favor). After only 45 minutes, I saw Dr. Lipson and I hope I can convey what a huge difference his skill and expertise has made in my life. My sinuses are no longer congested, and my ears are no longer itchy and infected... after years! As the other reviewers have stated, Dr. Lipson does not rush you, and encourages you to be thorough in your description of what the symptoms are, how long they've lasted, and what YOU think might be a factor. He actually listens and asks questions to clarify his understanding. He then does a thorough exam, and as one reviewer said, he is up to date on not only his own field, but also others (as they may relate to overall wellness). I have seen Dr. Lipson for years and have been very pleased with the level of care I received. He's extremely thorough and takes the time to let you ask questions. He's also a fantastic surgeon; he fixed my nose (which I'd broken as a girl) and cleaned out the infected tissue in my sinuses. I now rarely deal with sinus infections, and when I do, they're nowhere near as bad as they were before the surgery. (He's also done similar work on my brother and dad; they've both been much better for the procedures.) If you do have a problem from your surgery, he'll get you in immediately to take care of it. I had a bleeding issue after mine. I called his office, was told to come down immediately, and he took care of it. I'm pretty pathetic about situations like this, but his calmness made the whole thing much easier. The only thing you should be aware of is that between the amount of time he takes with each patient along with dealing with the occasional surgical complication, he does tend to run late. It's a good idea on the day of your appointment to call ahead and see how he's doing; if you don't, you may be sitting in the waiting room for an hour or more. Hey, he's worth it, but if you have a busy day, it's good to know right away whether or not you should just reschedule. read more

I had an appointment today at Dr. Lipson and arrived on time, filled out my form and sat and sat. After reading 5 magazines 45 minutes later, they put in a room and I sat and sat and no one came in to tell me the doctor was running late or to check on me. After being there 1 1/2 hour and left in a room waiting to see Dr. Lipson, who I had heard so many great things about...I walked out of the office. I got in my car and on my way back to work spoke with the receptionist who didn't even know that I had left and told her that I was very disappointed of the way I was treated. I don't blame the doctor, but the staff. Customer service and a good bedside manner are important. He sat down with me for over an hour to get my story, do an examination, and then answer my questions. The people of Palo Alto are very lucky to have such a wonderful physician in their area. I was on a business trip from NY, traveling with a head cold, when I was afflicted by painful Eustachian tube problems, with the ears unable to regulate the air pressure. He agreed to fit me into his schedule, did a thorough exam and medical history, and treated me, all the while explaining things in detail. I am so glad we went to see Dr. Lipson! After seeing three ENT's in the area, he is the only one that answered my questions. He was very thorough as well! I don't need to worry anymore! I was concerned with my son's breathing issues. He would always complain about his nose every time we went anywhere that was 90 degrees or hotter. My son got his adenoids taken out when he was 1 and I thought they had grown back. After talking to Dr. Lipson I have a full understanding that it wasn't his adenoids, but just that his nasal passages are dry and need to be moistened up every time we go somewhere that is hot.
