Hadn't been to Leonardo's since the fire, so we decided to stop by and enjoy an early meal. Only two other tables in the place and the server was right there to take our drink orders. We decided to go with an appetizer first and then think about what we might want to the main course. It was a hard decision as several items looked very promising. We decided on the garlic cheese bread. It came out very quickly, which was our first concern. We had thought it would have been on French style bread but it was on something more akin to Texas toast. Ok, but it had never seen a grill or the oven. It was literally warm bread with melted cheese. It was pale. It was limp. Imagine putting bread in the microwave and melting cheese on it. Plus the red sauce was bitter. Tasted like a can of tomato paste opened and never seasoned. It was also boiling hot from the microwave. We declined to eat it and finished our drinks to look for greener pastures and better food. The server was polite and we did tip (although I would have put an additional dollar down, but the husband was like "it's over 25%"). ps - I don't think the kitchen window that serves as a pizza pickup should be wide open with no screen. I've been here tons of times. I always order fried cauliflower to start. It's around $9.00 now and this last time there was barely any cauliflower. They really shorted me and when I complained about it, she said, "oh, I'll let them know" How about comping me or taking some off the bill? First, they serve them on a bed of waffle fries. Those outnumbered the cauliflower which is ridiculous! I'm ordering cauliflower, not the fries. Seems to be a lot of turnover lately and the newbies aren't as friendly. Come for the retro atmosphere, straight out of the 60s. The bright red padded semi-circle booths make for a cozy date or just meeting up with friends. The pizza is their specialty, a thin, sweet crust and good sauce. The sausage is finely ground and mildly seasoned - however I prefer the courser, spicier type. If you call in your order, there's an outdoor walk-up (not drive-thru) window to pick up your pizza directly from the kitchen. Now that's something you don't see anymore! The Saturday lunch special is a cheeseburger for $1.90. While that sounds like a value, believe me it is not. It doesn't come with anything and an order of waffle fries adds $4+ to your order. After a soft drink, tax & tip, my $1.90 special came to $9.50! To add insult to injury, it was the worst burger I've ever had outside of a vending machine. Over-cooked, dry and topped with a paper-thin slice of pepper-jack cheese on a thick, bready kaiser bun. The staff is friendly, but I'll never order another burger here again. Xavier's is the place to go for their Saturday special cheeseburger basket, just 3 bucks and a very decent burger. read more

The atmosphere is incredible, but the food is awful. I went to Leonardo's around lunch time when the restaurant was fairly empty. Immediately when I walked in I was overwhelmed by the spectacular restaurant decor. The furnishings make one feel as if they have gone back decades in time, which is very cool. The waitress was quite nice, and the service was pretty fast. However the same praise could not be said about the food. I tried the appetizer sampler, and everything on the plate tasted horrible and greasy. The food had clearly been pre-battered, frozen, and re-heated, which lead to an unpleasant texture and taste. I also had the pizza which suffered a similar fate. The pizza had a striking resemblance to frozen pizza from a conscience store, and the crust had a consistency more like cardboard than bread. I recommend this place only for their fantastic aesthetic, so order drinks, skip the food, and enjoy the view. read more

Love the decor in here. Lots and lots of Red/Black in this play. Looks very 70's with the oversized booths with red leather. The food is very good. I've had the lasagna, thin and thin crust pizzas. All were very good. The wait staff was very fun and helpful to us as out of towners. They took care of us and even offered up places to go and places to eat while in town on business for two weeks. We commented on the pizza and the owners son was in front of us. We didn't know it at the time, but he came back and talked to us and thanked us for coming into his restaurant. I love leo's. We go there about twice a week. The food is really good I recommend one of the many sandwiches, the pizza, or the quesodilla or any of the appetizers (queso dip n' sides are excellent).They also have homemade ranch!! We have dinner there about once a week but we mostly come for the staff and comfortable setting. It's more of a lounge than a bar but it's the most comfortable bar in town. Not too loud and not too quiet. During the holidays they decorate the place so extensively that the decorations have decorations. read more

wish I could say this experience was great but I'd be lying if I said that. I've been coming here since the early 90's and my parents since the early 70's and none of us have ever had the experience that we had this last time. I know for me it will likely be my last time, which is sad. service started out great and then we ordered an appetizer... 45 minutes later still no appetizer, I should mention it took equally as long to get a drink. we had to remind the server twice about the apps, she blamed it on the "appetizer printer" not being plugged in while other tables had their apps coming out.. hmmmmmm odd. Then it took forever for food, we did not order anything out of the ordinary but for some reason that took forever and that of course was blamed on the kitchen help. My husband called over another server and asked if he could speak with our gal, she was already avoiding our table and that made it even worse. This just makes us upset because it is (or WAS) my dad's favorite place to go and it was his birthday. Our "server" never admitted guilt, she just blamed everyone else, own up to your mistake like an adult. Also it is obnoxious that an auto tip is added on for 6 people, she did not deserve that at all, maybe it should go to a new appetizer printer. She did take an appetizer off the bill and we by no means we're expecting anything for free, we just wanted good service for my dad's birthday. Never user their website to order! Order and paid pizza online and website accepted and it stated order would be ready in 30 minutes. 5 minutes later received an email that my order was cancelled. I called right away and asked why the order was cancelled. The person stated the computer cancel's orders if they receive too many orders. However, I could order it on the phone and will only take 30 minutes. (so it wasn't that busy) I asked "So my card won't get charged for the website order?" They said "No" and I got charged twice for the same order (website and in person) I called a couple days later and asked why was I charged and I want the website charge refunded. They person on the phone said, "It will be refunded in two days and someone will call you to verify" I waited 5 days and still being charged double for the pizza and have never received a call back from Leonardo's. Now I am trying to go through my credit card and dispute the charge. Canceling orders after it is accepted is pretty shady. read more

We've had pizza there and it wasn't anything memorable. Tried their burgers and I'm guessing these were frozen pattys dressed up to look "gourmet". I will say the waffle fries were pretty good. And an odd selection for soda. No Coke or Pepsi, you have to get RC, Diet Rite, dr. Pepper, 7-up or orange. Really? No Coke or Pepsi? This must be a Cedar Rapids thing, since we've ran into this at other places too. What started out as a night out to eat with family turned into the worst experience I've ever had at Leonardo's. We started with two appetizers which came out in a timely manner. Then we ordered three pizzas and two entrees. We waited over an hour for our food. When our food came out one of the entrees was cold so we sent that back to the kitchen and told them to take it off the bill. We made four attempts to talk to the manager but she was busy. We were offered a free round of drinks for the wait when only two people in our party were drinking. We were also told they would take money off of the bill but they would not provide us with an itemized bill to show us if in fact we received a discount. Our server Jackie was wonderful and kept us informed the entire time. Unfortunately that did not make up for the poor kitchen management and our wasted time. We will not be returning. read more

To start, this joint has amazing atmosphere! From the outside, it only appears to be an old bar/grill type restaurant. The minute I walked in, the stone walls peaked my interest! The white lights hanging from the ceiling give great light, which I wonderful considering there are no windows. The service welcomed us right away and we seated ourselves. The plush, riveted red leather booths only added to the vintage feel of the place. The menu is vast, covering everything from pizza to chicken Caesar wraps. Catfish, steak, and burgers are a few more additions to the choices you have. I had a chicken Caesar wrap, my partner had a beefwich sandwich. Both plates came with fresh cut waffle fries, a pickle, and slaw. Everything was outstanding!! The wrap was packed with chicken, paired with tomatoes, onions, cheese, and Caesar dressing. Delish!! Our server was attentive, very friendly, and prompt with our requests. Pricing was very affordable. Had lunch at Leonardo's today and it was inexpensive and tasty with great service. Six bucks for the express lunch of a sandwich basket. This experience has been consistent over the past 15 years of going here for lunch and it is worth trying this restaurant. The decor inside reminds us of the time when the "rat pack" performed at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas, and one expects to see Sammy Davis Jr. or Joey Bishop walk out of the back room at any moment. I have not been there in years because a couple of times I went with Modern American Woodmen and even though each family comes in individually, they charge automatic 15% tip like for a large party. I got a really snotty waitress more than once and have not been back. I refuse to pay 15% gratuity if I don't get good service with a good attitude. I love Leonardo's for the atmosphere. I've been spending time at this place ever since I was a child, and my mother worked in the kitchen sometimes. We're talking early-mid 70s at that time... I was back in CR over this last summer, in July 2011. It was great to hang out in there. It's swanky, kinda dim lit, and everything is in RED! It's so cool.
