I really dug this place. It is tough, in this area, to find good pizza. Or to find pizza at all. So much is geared toward seafood. Thankfully we found Leonardo's. I really enjoyed myself here. First off, their menu is huge. It is not just pizza. You can get sandwiches, tenders, burgers, Franks, anything really. I love the feel of the inside which is all brick. Prices are good. It is a comfortable casual atmosphere and the pizza was quite good. They do sell slices. Leonardo's is a little off the beaten path but I enjoyed it. Asked for spaghetti was given over cooked dry angel hair. The salad had old slimy cucumbers and carrots. To start, we ordered a bunch of food that came to almost $100 and one of the dinner plates was missing when we got home. Portions are not the best. Chicken tenders looked and tasted like frozen store bought ones and they were not crispy or juicy. Same with the fries, probably frozen. I've seen better chicken strips from Tyson. The BLT was just average. Too much mayo, and the bread was soggy. The best thing about our order was the mozzarella sticks which were somewhat decent. I ordered a mushroom and pepperoni pizza and a side of zucchini sticks. While the zucchini sticks were very good, the pizza was terrible. The pizza tasted like cardboard and the mushrooms were from a jar or can, not even fresh. The cashier guy told me that they have the best pizza in town and raved about how they had outstanding reviews. When I went in to order, I saw the cook open the pizza oven and check the cooking time of a pizza with his bare hand by picking it up to see if it was cooked. It's funny, I see I reviewed this place 10 years ago and also gave it 3 stars. I hadn't been in a long time since I moved away from Gloucester but my mother wasn't feeling well and really wanted spaghetti and meatballs (from a local place was her request) so I decided to stop in and get that and a pizza for me and my dining partner to share. I called in and ordered the "special pizza" from the menu which probably should have a more distinct name (more on that later) and spaghetti and meatballs. The woman on the phone thought I wanted spaghetti put on a pizza and was confused since they don't offer that. Everything got sorted out, got the standard pick up in 20 minutes. Arrived in time and nothing was ready. Several other people were waiting. Watched Frozen for about ten minutes. Smelled yummy food and dreamed of my pizza. Got my items and got to her house about 10 minutes away only to discover instead of the "special" pizza which should have had a variety of meat, mushrooms and peppers I had a regular cheese pizza. Boo. I called back and she said she thought I meant the special of the day which was a cheese pizza. Might want to think about the name of a pizza on your menu that shares the name of the special of the day to avoid confusion. We wanted the pizza we paid for so they said bring your pizza back (weird) and we'll make a new one. So off my partner went while my mother was happy with her spaghetti. I was craving something and didn't want to cook. The wife wanted steak tips and I wanted pasta. Well this was the only place open in Gloucester at the time (covid 19) I regret all of it. The "medium" tips were well done. The fries were disgusting. Soggy, no salt. Now I got the carbonara Linguine... I asked for a little extra sauce. I regret my decision. I don't know if it was the onions had gone bad in addition to the cream being curdled but when it was made but it was a sour heavily white onion taste that was like licking a gym locker. I've lived in alot of towns, with tons of roast beef/sub shops, and never once has my experience been as bad as it is here. You can tell that Leonardo's is onto a good thing when their seated dinner crowd are mostly local Sicilians eating pasta dishes. Gloucester Sicilians eating pasta dishes at a restaurant is a rare thing to witness and telling. (This probably means either their stove at home blew-up or their Grandma died.) Anyway, it's really a pizza/sub shop by look and feel - but they put a little extra into it and have some exceptional menu items. I usually go for lunch and order one of two items. The Chicken Kebab Salad w/ Feta is huge and amazing simply for Leonardo's trademark juicy marinated chicken which is grilled perfectly and goes great upon the bed of fresh crisp veggies. The other lunch fave is the Meatball Sub which is put into overdrive from the homemade tomato sauce -made daily says Lenny, the proud owner. I'm sure the sauce (fresh, tangy, and a touch of sweetness) is part of the appeal for the evening pasta crowd too. Oh, the meatballs are juicy and tasty and ask for extra provolone for true sensory overload. Yeah, you can order a decent pizza here, but save the pizza order for Maria's or Sebastian's. You want to be ordering one of Leonardo's salads, hot subs, or pasta dishes. And if you do it enough, Lenny will remember your name as he does with hundreds of his regulars. read more

Leonardo's is a small family-owned pizzeria/sub/Italian food shop on downtown Gloucester's Main St so it's metered street parking. Friendly, very casual, & BYOB. Their prices are reasonable. Their slices of pizza are pretty good, but only available till 1PM. The sauce on their pizza is sweet & tangy. The cheese is a little oily, but plentiful. And the crust is thick, chewy, & dusted w/semolina. They have a wide variety of subs & pasta dishes. Their pasta Alfredo was somewhat gummy. I went in last night and placed my order. I stood there and watched the cook Handle raw chicken and not wash his hands then he proceed to make my salad. After that he then knocked the container that was holding the raw chicken on to the ground and scooped up pieces and placed it into the trash (still did not wash his hands). When I said something to the Lady behind the counter she looked at me and did not say anything to him so I made a comment to her she turned to the cook and said I guess you need to wash your hands. Good solid food, no real complaints on this one other than they are closed on Sundays. This is a standard sub shop during the day with a line out the door at lunch cranks out the best chicken kabob sub I've ever had. It seems like everybody else feels that way too because I'm pretty sure they have one grill devoted to just chicken during lunch hours. At night they have dinner service with pretty much the same menu as lunch but the wait on you. Everything here is homemade and you can tell when you bite into the lasagna or meatballs that the people running the place love what they do. You can also BYOB and I've found that Lenny (owner) has no problem taking any unwanted beers off your hands when you leave. About the owners, they are some of the nicest people you will every meet. They are from Gloucester and their kids go to Gloucester schools. Everybody that works for them is very friendly and you never feel like you are in a rush. read more

I have been doing food reviews for quite a long time I have a food allergy to peppers well they put peppers in the food and the salad when I order my lasagna as I do everyday three times a week same order I order my lasagna with extra sauce and no peppers on the salad dude or food allergy not only is the person not intelligent enough to not put the peppers because I have an EpiPen and I could end up in the hospital and die but I'm paying for a dinner because they don't do just the cheese lasagna itself and the dinner comes with rolls that I never get the rolls and it also comes with three meatballs and I have gotten the meatballs and haven't gotten the meatballs so sometimes I get them and sometimes I don't but it seems that the salad always has a pepper green pepper on it and I tell them all the time don't put pepper on it well I called to get my lasagna and I was going to actually check the order before I left she said we have a problem we can't serve you anymore because my boss told me we can't serve you because you complained about the food well let me tell you guys the service is ridiculous the girl at the phone her name is Michelle I don't know her personally but she was very nasty with me on the phone very rude and ignorant I have no place to cook because I do not have a place to stay and cook so I need to eat out everyday and have good food instead of eating fast food so I wanted a lasagna dinner with a side salad well a salad I got last week had a pepper on it and I gave it to my brother and my sister and brother both saw the salad with the pepper on it and the fact I got no meatballs it really drove me crazy I was very pissed off it was disgusting that she told me they would not serve me food any longer because I complained about there making that mistake that's bad customer service it's not correct they lose customers all the time and I didn't realize it was because of the staff it's the staff and if they mess up your food and you end up in the hospital they don't care I told her not to put a pepper on my salad and I told her make sure there's meatballs in it she said we'll give you a free dinner and this is the last time you can ever order food with us and I said keep your dinner I don't want your dinner because you'll probably get that wrong too it's always even though I tell them please don't put a pepper on it because I'm allergic she thinks she's not putting peppers but she is and it's unprofessional all they had to do was check the meal before I walk out and say we wanted you to see this meatballs in here and we wanted you to see there's a salad with no pepper but instead of correcting the problem like business people that are professional and run a business in a restaurant during a pandemic they decided to lose business and somebody that was going there three times a week I think they're ridiculous and I think it's very unprofessional and stupid very BADDDD place to go read more

I absolutely LOVE Leonardo's. Their burgers, subs, wraps, pasta dishes.. All fabulous and always a good sized portion of food.
