The shop can be missed if driving by, one of those that if you are walking around easier to get to since off a busy street. When you walk in, it is dark then the main area is lit up. Plenty of seating and a bit dated. The owner is a sweet lady that is welcoming and friendly that takes your order and makes the food fresh. Order a gyro that was full of flavor and the meat was lamb beef. The meat was not dry and the bread was soft and not tough. The sauce was great and the a spicy red sauce had the right amount of heat to not distract from the flavor. Ordered a side of fries, crunchy and typical frozen rippled fries. I used to visit Leo's Taverna almost weekly from 2004 to 2018 when I worked downtown. We ate there again this week. I'd have to say that the food was remarkably constant, which is both a good and bad thing. The Gyros plate is my go-to lunch here. The gyros meat is good, but the Kronos gyros pita is almost never fresh and soft tasting. I really think they should find a new source or make their own. The Tzatziki sauce had a pretty good flavor, but was a little watered down compared to how I remember it. The hummus was superb! The salad and dressing were okay. The chicken pie is made with filo dough. It tasted good, but was a little dry. The ambience hasn't really changed much. Basic tables and chairs, lots of seating, and few customers. Overall, this was a 'meh' meal for me. We live on the Big Island now, and with no Greek restaurants here, my wife has taken to making our own pita bread, Tzatziki sauce, and gyros meat [from fresh ground been and lamb]. I guess I'm a little spoiled! That said, increasing the food quality would likely return huge dividends for the restaurant. Leo's Taverna in downtown Honolulu is a convenient option for Greek food. I don't typically eat out for lunch as much as I used to. So this was a treat to go out and pick up food. My go to here is the Gyro Sandwich. Typically comes with generous slices of beef & lamb, lettuce, tomato, onion and tzatziki sauce. I also enjoy ordering the Spanakopita. This is a flaky dough filled with spinach and feta cheese. The restaurant remains a solid choice for Greek food downtown. I'm kind of amazed Leo's Taverna has such low ratings on Yelp. During rush hour they are non-stop slammed. The establishment is surprisingly large. They have doors opening on Ft. St. Mall and Bishop. There's probably seating for 40 people but although they are busy, nobody really dines in. The best thing is they are located right in front of a loading zone on Bishop so if you have commercial plates with a LZ sticker, you can literally park right in front of their door and pop in for a quick bite. This place has been here forever, and although I once lived a block away I had never tried it. My impression of this place, and probably the reason why they don't have stellar reviews is that they are stuck in the 1990s and likely have never really changed. Their food, and presentation is pretty dated. Donar Shack a few blocks away delivers a more eye-appealing plate. Their menu is more modern and more visually appealing. However, Leo's has reasonable prices, reasonable portions, and what I ordered was tasty apart from the small side salad which was turning a little bit wilted/brown. I got the Imam Bayeldi, which was basically an eggplant stew served over rice. It was actually very good. At $15, it was one of the more expensive items on the menu which was interesting because it had no meat. Next time, I'd probably like to try the Chicken pie, which is only $10.95 and maybe a small side of something else. For the price, I feel this place delivers. I have driven by this establishment many times but I finally had the chance to stop by for a late lunch. It was raining pretty hard that afternoon and the place was empty. We ordered the gyros and fries combo and it was very delicious! The gyros itself was very tasty. I think I needed a little more tzatziki sauce but overall I enjoyed my gyros. I have heard through tongue and cheek about this place. It has been so long since I've had Greek food, especially living in Waipahu. It's hard to come by nowadays to find anything authentic in the central side of the island, and I guess today was that day to travel to town and visit there. So...how do I summarize what I just experienced? It was, for the most part, great. First impressions seeing the place, it looked really nice, as the atmosphere was really cool to look at. The staff did a good job with listening to what I wanted and delivered. In the past, I had my fair share of gyros from certain areas, so I decided to kick it up a notch. I decided to order a lamb souvlaki for lunch and did pair it up with a baklava to give me a decently good meal. It did cost me around $15 with the water, which I didn't mind too much. For the most part, I think it was fair. Overall, they did a really good job. They have other locations with better parking but this location just has a different feel and atmosphere than the others. It's so welcoming when you get there, the employees greet you with a smile, phone orders are welcomed and a nice option if you're in a hurry but don't want fast food. The mom and pop feel with amazing food. I always feel full after eating here but never feel bloated. The food price is one of the more reasonable options here on the island for the fresh ingredients you get. I will remain a consistent customer and hope more people find this gem. read more

The staff is inviting and friendly, they must be a family because of the talking about k and forth. They were all smiling. The food was good and what I hoped I would get. We used to enjoy eating here often BC (before COVID). On a recent visit I ordered the Veggie Combo plate, which on the menu is supposed to have dolmas, a small salad, babaganoush, hummus, tabbouleh, and a pita. When I opened my plate back at work, I saw that instead of tabbouleh there was a bean salad with kidney beans, peas, corn, chickpeas and a few slivers of onion! It actually had a nicely tart dressing and I was so hungry I ate it all, but would have much preferred tabbouleh. It would have been nice if they had informed me when I was ordering that they would be making this substitution. Part of the reason I was so hungry was that the pita was hard and rubbery as if it had been microwaved too long, so it was too difficult to eat more than a few bites. Conveniently located right in Bishop street on the corner of bishop and south hotel and in the union mall/union plaza courtyard. During the day time it's a really lovely spot to grab a casual lunch. They have a handful of lovely women cooking in the kitchen so you know everything is going to be good! Even though I don't work downtown I like to come occasionally. Everything is fresh! They do get busy around 11 as all of downtown employees call in their to go lunch items here. Leo's has great basmati rice, good portion of meat & hummus on the gyro plate. I always ask for extra yogurt dressing as it's so yummy. I can never finish the plate & end up with left over for next days lunch. It's been some years since I've last been to Leo's Taverna. When I last ate there, I ordered the Value Meal (Gyro, French Fries, and a drink). Value Meal as in a Value Meal priced at/around $9.99 then. It was great! The wait time wasn't long (maybe 2 - 3 minutes at the most, depending on the busyness at the time). Really quick service I would say, because I called and food was supposed to be done in 20 minute but I got there sooner and was pretty much ready for me. I got to talk to Elizabeth and she is so lovely, super nice! We got the falafel which was really good, the hummus and pita (pita was super fresh just by the way it pulls, yum!). Ordered a gyro sandwich and it was hefty portion and tasted great. Dolmades is good and filling. The Roasted eggplant was also good. The baklava was on sweeter side for me but otherwise tasty as well. Parking might be challenging being that it's in downtown. I've used UberEats to order from this establishment at least 4 times and each time it was delicious. I usually order either the gyro plate or gyro value meal. The gyro plate comes with rice, gyro meat, hummus, salad, tzatziki sauce and pita bread. Each time I've ordered it, the taste is consistently delicious and very filling. The gyro value meal is a gyro sandwich and crinkle fries. They put some type of seasoning on the fries and those things are delicious. Nice crispy fries, I'm not a fan of crinkle cut but with that seasoning on it, I'll eat crinkle cut fries anytime from Leo's Taverna. My co-worker ordered the falafel plate and she thoroughly enjoyed them. That comes with falafel, salad, hummus, tahini sauce and pita bread. Maybe next time I'll remember to take a pic. read more

It's been ages since I've been back to Leo's, but now that I'm back in town, decided to try it again. The menu is still the same, just the prices have gone up a little, which is a given after everything else is getting expensive. Got there just before 12pm aka lunch rush and ordered the chicken kebab (2) plate and my friend got the gyro plate. Just know that if you order the kebab plate there, you'll be waiting for a while. Everyone who ordered anything else, got their food before me. So, yeah...better to call your order in or if you don't want to wait. But, finally got our food after a bit of a wait. The chicken kebab plate was still tasty as I remembered and that garlic sauce that comes with it...yumm The gyro plate was an "okay" for my friend. It was still tasty, but I think she said the meat could have been a little more juicy. I would go back for the kebab plate and I need to see if their chicken plates are still as yummy as I remember. read more

I like their food - needs a sprinkle of salt usually but overall not bad. And although not overly friendly, are normally really nice. Today was a different story. I waited over 35 minutes for them to pop my moussaka in the little microwave. They completely forgot it and were numbers passed mine, and boss lady even had the nerve to say "we're working on it" when I saw her search and only just find the ticket. They seem to forget that the kitchen is open and you can see everything. They screwed up and couldn't even own it. But during my 35+ minute wait, I observed the boss lady yelling at her workers. Maybe she will apologize later, but seeing that she couldn't even do it to me, I doubt she will. She was also grabbing food with her bare hands, then on her phone, opening the public fridge for drinks and not once did she wash her hands. I watched my plate get made without the food being touched...who knows what happens when it's actually made, but I will try not to think about it. They also charge an extra $1.35 to not get rice and get a handful of extra salad. Most places will do an even trade. So disappointing... read more

I confess...I never ate Greek food before despite being born and raised here in Hawaii. I know there aren't a lot of options here, but I am glad that there were two locations (this and Doner Shack) in downtown that were advertising their food offerings on Doordash. Yesterday, I decided to just go for it and give it a try. I ordered a Gyro Value Meal and a Beef Lule Plate. When the order arrived, I was greeted with an awesome aroma of herbs and spices. Now I know this has got to be good. The Gyro Value Meal consisted of Greek Fries, Gyro Sandwich, and a yogurt dipping sauce. The sandwich was soooooo gooood with tender and well seasoned gyro meat and fresh veggies. The sauce, sorry I forgot the name as I'm texting this review on a smartphone, took everything to the next level. I ate it all even though I usually don't eat veggies in general. The Greek Fries were fully cooked and seems seasoned enough, but it had a very tiny hint of garlic. I highly recommend dipping the fries in the yogurt sauce to add flavor. I think if I were to buy again, I would stick to the gyro sandwich. Now on to the Beef Lule Plate. Each plate lunch includes salad, hummus, and a pita bread. Reading previous reviews, some have mentioned that there wasn't enough rice. I think it was just the right portion that accompanied the beef. By the way, the beef was seasoned to perfection and I enjoyed every bite of it. The hummus was amazing with its smooth and creamy texture. Oh my goodness it was soooo gooood with the pita bread. Yum! Unfortunately, I gave my side salad to another family member, so I can't review that part, but they did mention that it was fresh. We were staying at a nearby hotel and my wife was in a mood for Gyros. I located Leo's Taverna and went to the restaurant. It has a narrow entrance facing Bishop Street while the bulk of the restaurant is in back. What I was really impressed with was that a lady asked me if it was to go or eat there and when I told her we were planning to take the Gyro sandwiches on the plane with us, she let us know that she would put the cucumber sauce on the side so that it wouldn't make the pita bread soggy. The sandwiches matched the great service, and were flavorful, fresh and full. In addition the prices were reasonable especially considering many restaurants have increased their prices substantially.
