The menu here is fairly typical of Québec French restaurants - steaks with sauces, foie gras, onion soup, escargots, cheese platters - with some other things thrown in like poutine and pizzas. Not much for seafood except the fish&chips and some tartare (raw) preparations. And, disappointingly, no chicken; not even the classic Coq Au Vin. And the Poulet Général Tao (General Gau's Chicken) on the specials board - curious to find this in a French restaurant. But we both found interesting enough items to order. I had something from the large specials page: Bavette de Boeuf sauce foie gras, légumes et pdt aligot (flank steak with sauce, root vegetables and mashed potatoes). I liked the steak which was cooked perfectly but the sauce wasn't my favorite - that's where the foie gras was used I think. As for the legumes? I didn't see any so maybe they were pureed in the sauce? Or they modified the dish? There were also vegetables - asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, turnip, and carrots - seasoned and each cooked to perfection, undoubtably individually. And all were impressively great except the carrot which was starchy and boring; the only one I didn't finish. As for the potatoes aligot, that's a very indulgent mashed preparation with lots of butter, cream, and cheese. Way too rich for me and I didn't finish that. Some would undoubtably love it. The wife had a Caesar Salad and Poutine Au Canard Confit (poutine with duck confit). She was conflicted about it and probably wouldn't order it again but I'd rate it highly in my growing survey of poutines. The gravy was more complex than most, thicker and sweeter. The duck was plentiful and I thought it went really well with the gravy, but it wasn't as "confited" as we expected. For drinks the wife had a refreshing Aperol Spritz and I enjoyed two of the three sangrias they offered: a white and a blue. Blue! That's unusual. I learned it was made from bleuet, a blueberry wine made in Québec. I liked both very much. On this warm evening it was nice to sit outside and watch the street activity. Our waitress was fantastic. Neither of us was hungry enough for dessert. The regular desserts didn't appeal anyway, but two on the specials board did: the Boules Au Rum (rum balls) and Tartelette Aux Fraises (strawberry tart). Not many negatives here. One though: on the menu is Bavette De Cheval À L'Échalotte. If you're not fluent in French, use a translator. That's horse! Apparently it's a thing in Québec, though uncommon and we managed to stumble on one of the few places with it on the menu. I'm an adventurous eater but I still found that a bit unsettling. read more

This resto has been around since we first starting coming to Québec City 25 years ago. This location is a mere 50 yards away from their former location on St. Jean. It was our first time in the new location as well as the first time eating horse meat. Folks, it was absolutely delicious and oh so tender; the sauce was outstanding, so to the mixed variety of vegetables which included Brussels sprouts, carrots, broccoli, white beet and fingerling potatoes. Probably the best French Canadian place I've had so far here in Quebec City and I've studied every place quite extensively. Price was reasonable. Selections quite authentic. Flavors were also good. Service was prompt- they speak both English and French, which most businesses on this street due to high tourist flow, speak both languages. Must try: Beef cheek in vin. Understated dish but perhaps should be their star attraction despite the competing poutines, pastas etc. For those who know stews, the beef cheek is the most supreme cut of meat to make in a slow stew. It is a different melt in your mouth that no chuck, oxtail, or parts of the body can copy. Cheeks are also super hard to find in the stores because most of it is gristle and fat and require a lot of work to trim. So for them to present a nice large piece, is already pretty hard to find. it is paired alongside a scalloped potato slab and some steamed veggies. A very 5/5 dish. Memorable and I even considered coming back for round 2 for dinner since I've not seen a cut of meat this soft. Ordered potted rabbit out of curiosity. Nothing particularly special for those wondering about this- reminded me more of a chicken salad paired with some toasted bread and salad. So, it's a safe tasting dish if you want to say you've had rabbit before. Steak tartare- a good dish and must try up here in Quebec. It was more sour than I remembered compared to France, and this may be a variant here in Quebec. Nonetheless, mind over matter if you can, it's very good. Whatever you do, don't order the fish and chips! Probably in the bottom 2 or 3 I have ever had in my life and I've had a lot. Heavily breaded and absolutely no taste. There was hardly any fish. I asked the woman at the next table and she said hers were awful also. I told the waiter and he never apologized or said anything. That said the place has a good ambience. Service was only ok. Our waiter was an older man who gave me the impression he didn't like Americans. My wife got pizza and it was good so maybe they should stick to that. I wouldn't go back. read more

The only reason I came here is because it's the only place in Quebec City that serves Cheval (horse meat). According to the hotel concierge they do not take reservations - first come, first serve basis. There was line outside, and again another half full restaurant. Just don't understand it. I show up and walk in and head to the bar. There were about a dozen seats and only two were occupied. I was told by the hostess that I needed to wait to be seated even at the bar. Ok, went out and got on queue, as the Brits would say. Few minutes later the hostess lets in about a dozen people and then proceeds to tell everyone else that's on queue that they are full because the chef will not be able to handle any more. I asked the hostess if I could be seated at the bar. I told here I'm here for one dish and one dish only - cheval. She went in to check with the chef, OK I was allowed to be seated at the bar. WOW! what a special privilege. I guess I was chef approved. It took over and hour for my dish to arrive. In any case, I just kept drinking the wine, didn't care, didn't have to drive, the hotel was a couple of blocks away. Struck up a conversation with another expat so the time slipped away. Finally my cheval arrived - horse flank steak, medium rare with shallots, fingerling potatoes and vegetables, looks good. First bite - oh, tender, somewhat of a new flavor, not gamey at all and not chicken or beef or lamb...I did enjoy it but I have nothing else to compare it to. I also had a crème brûlée. We walked across the street from Hortus where we had the worst encounter with a bartender who obviously dislikes tourists. What a complete difference here. The employees especially the bartender were the friendliest we have met in Quebec. We sat at the bar and split the pepperoni pizza. It was very good, and easily shareable. Even though it was late and they were closing we were not rushed. Loved the ambiance and decor. If you're a tourist looking for a place to eat, definitely give this place a try. read more

An unexpected easy pitstop on our last night as we had not intended on this area. We sat at the bar and had martinis, tartare, mini poutine and mushrooms. We stopped in bc it was close. The service was lovely. The dinner was fine. One person really enjoyed their salmon tar tar. One person liked their spaghetti bolognese. The other two of us can't recall our meals- kind of forgettable. If we had more energy we would have found a more interesting spot. read more

My husband and I had dinner here on our most recent trip to Quebec City. I was afraid that the food would be expensive and not very good since it's in the touristy part of town, but I was pleasantly surprised that the food was pretty good and the price was reasonable. We both had the table d'hote ($28) which gave you an appetizer (2 choices), a main (5 choices), a dessert (2 choices) and tea or coffee. I had the terrine as my starter. It was a duck pate with a sunflower seed and pickled vegetables chutney and a side salad. It was really tasty. My husband had the cream of carrot soup. I had a taste and thought it was ok (a bit too rich of my tastes). I definitely think I chose the better appetizer. We both had the Steak Frites as our main. The steak was a bit tough and oddly oily, but for the price I can't really complain. The fries were shoestring fries (my favourite) and so crispy. It came with mayo, but I ate mine with ketchup. I think the mayo was made in-house. It also came with a salad, which was a real mixed greens salad with shredded carrots, cucumbers and radishes. Veggies were fresh and the salad was big. I had the key lime pie for dessert. It was served in a tall shot glass with a side dollop of whipped cream. It was just the right size and equal parts sweet and tart. It was the perfect ending to the meal. My husband had the chocolate mousse cake. I had a taste and it was rich and creamy. I would have been happy with his dessert too. Service was excellent. We've eaten here once or twice a year for ca. 20, including the old location and times when we hand only just enough $. (Profile pic was there 6 years ago) They take some reservations, also still do walk in's. Warm service, quick plates, great value, good wine, excellent cooking, something for my kid. Food was okay. I wasn't too hungry so I got the French Onion soup and my bf has the blood sausage plate. I saw a lot of reviews about the attitudes of the servers. I did see that they interact a lot with the locals more than the non locals but that didn't bother me. My server was polite and to the point. I think the way he presented himself with the 'to the point' attitude may be what puts people off in the reviews I've read. We stumbled across this restaurant while walking through the old city. We tried some of the local rose wine and it was really good and on the cheaper side as far as drinks in Quebec go. We tried the charcuterie board. It was slim on the meat (3 slices) but came with a very nice selection of cheeses and a beet and honey chutney which was very nice. They have a good spin on the classic French onion soup; it contains actual braised beef. I tried the gruyere, bacon and ham white pizza and it was more of a round flatbread than a pizza, but was quite flavorful. Located on the corner of Rue St. Jean, on the ground floor of Hotel du Vieux-Quebec (also a great find, and a great value). We've been patrons for a LONG time, beginning with our honeymoon some years ago. On that trip, I fell in love with olives because immediately after we were seated, our server brought a tureen of mixed olives, seasoned with herbs, garlic cloves and olive oil. They were a perfect compliment to our pizzas, salads, and wine. Years later, Les Frères de la côte still stands the test of time. We stopped in on a lark and we were very pleased that we did. Great big portions at reasonable prices and very good food. It's a good family friendly place with something for everyone. I really enjoyed the osso bucco far more than I thought I would. The gnocchi made the dish but it had very large tender pieces of veal and bone marrow (of course). The pizza was also good though there are probably better pizza places around. Service was friendly though the waiter disappeared a bit before we could get the check. Busy place. They spoke English well and were friendly to us. Only complaint is that one steak frites came out about 5 minutes after everyone else. But it was done perfectly medium and was a great deal at just $14.95. Fries were tasty. My take: Trust the reviews from the elites. This is a definite find in the midst of lots of places. This restaurant has been very consistent for years....Used to be next to a hotel in Vieux Quebec, now it is located just a block up....closer to the Port St Jean. I had the moules et frites a volonte.....All you can eat Mussels and Fries for $19.99. They were good. I had the white wine and onion sauce first...then the peppercorn sauce. The latter was delicious and creamy...the former was a light. Fries were not as crispy as I like them, but OK. My BF got the Steak frites.
