I was struggling with a curtain rod installation and Jim saved the day. First of all let me say: I swear I'm a capable adult. I've installed curtain rods before. I've installed a toilet. I've installed rain barrels. I've replaced the carb on my lawnmower. If there's anything I can do well it is **follow-printed-instructions-to-achieve-the-intended-result**. But these curtain rods were demons from the depths of hell. I tried to install the mounting brackets using drywall anchors. The top one went in, no problem. The bottom one went in about halfway and then it felt like I had hit concrete. It was too far in for there to be a stud (plus my studfinder indicated no stud -- except for the stud whose hand it was in, har har har). What the heck was going on? I threw caution to the wind and just drilled a long screw into whatever material had blocked the drywall anchor, hoping it wasn't something containing water or electricity. I moved onto the second mounting bracket, and the drywall anchor snapped in half while I was screwing it in, leaving a chunk of plastic embedded in my drywall. I know this doesn't sound too bad so far. But look, I didn't have a ladder. I was standing on my tiptoes on a step-stool. I wasn't using a drill -- I was screwing these bastards in by hand, with very little leverage. I was basically making the job as difficult as possible for myself. Toss in the likelihood that I had mis-measured the mounting brackets (Jim discovered that I had), and the fact that I had already spent two hours on this little project, and that my wife was enjoying watching me toil a LITTLE TOO MUCH, HONEY... and you can see how calling in the cavalry was starting to look like the cost-effective option. Anyway, I called Jim and I was immediately glad that I had. He came over the same day I called him, and helped me install the curtain rods. We had a few more misadventures along the way (I'm telling you, they're demon rods), but we overcame. Jim's a very entertaining guy, and we had a few laughs, and I learned a few things. I have used Jim twice in the past month. The first time I chose to use Jim was because of his excellent reviews and his resume. The second time I used Jim was because of the excellent quality of the work he did on the first job. I would never hesitate to call Jim for any future job of any kind. In addition to his top-notch work, Jim is an extremely thoughtful and ethical person. Jim will tell you up front whether or not he can do your job. And if Jim tells you he will be at your house at 0730 he will be pulling into your driveway at 0729. (That in itself is rare enough these days.) When Jim hits the ground he wastes no time getting right into the job and does not slack off until the day is done. (Another thing: Jim's assistant Sergio is a mirror image of Jim as far as courtesy and ethics are concerned. Choosing Sergio as his assistant, to me, further confirms my opinion of Jim's ethics and decision making.) Jim has installed an outside door for me, has installed overhead fans and lights, and installed granite countertops in my kitchen. For all of these jobs Jim had to think outside the box to tailor the work to the requirements of the situation. The installation of the granite countertops was particularly tough but Jim was never over matched by the job! Funny handy guy! We hired Jim to help us do some tedious handy work around the house. Nothing major project but requires lots of efforts.
