The Modernist -- A True Speakeasy Experience in San Antonio…read more If you're in downtown San Antonio, take a break from the River Walk and check out The Modernist. This is a true speakeasy-style lounge that's easy to overlook from the outside--it looks like a regular, unassuming place. But once you step inside, the atmosphere completely changes. The interior is cozy, intimate, and has that hidden-gem feeling you want from a speakeasy. The staff members are incredibly friendly and welcoming, which made the experience even better. I had the pleasure of having Adan behind the bar, and this guy knows how to make a good drink! As always, I started with my go-to Old Fashioned. I have to say, it was easily one of my top two Old Fashioneds I've ever had. Then I told Adan to surprise me, and he came up with some kind of peanut butter chocolate martini. Let me just say... it was a true pleasure. Rich, smooth, and absolutely delicious. What I really liked about The Modernist is that it feels like a place the locals actually frequent rather than just another tourist spot. I genuinely had a great time here. If you're visiting San Antonio and find yourself downtown, give The Modernist a try. Step away from the River Walk for a little while--you might just discover your new favorite spot.

There wasn't a drink menu, and…read morewe were told the idea is that you tell the bartender what you like and they make something for you. Her first drink was a lavender-style cocktail and was fine. For her second drink, she told the bartender to surprise her. He gave her a look and asked more than once if she was sure she wanted him to surprise her. Instead of making her an actual cocktail, he poured her what seemed to be a straight, extremely bitter liqueur. The whole interaction felt sarcastic and like he was intentionally messing with her rather than trying to make her something she would enjoy. What bothered me most was the attitude behind it. We weren't being rude, demanding, or causing problems. We were there to have a good time and experience the whole "tell us what you like and we'll make you something" concept. I did call the number listed for the business afterward trying to speak to someone about it. The person who answered said I had the wrong number and didn't know what I was talking about. I got angry during that call and said some things I shouldn't have, and I can admit that. But that doesn't change how disappointing the experience at the bar was. We expected a creative and welcoming experience and instead left feeling like my wife had been mocked. I hope management sees this and addresses it, because the concept of the place is great, but the way we were treated completely ruined it for us

Morrissey hadn't graced San Antonio in over 10 years, with past cancellations and postponements haunting fans along the way. So when he finally returned, San Antonio Moz fans showed up and showed out. Despite multiple after-party options across the city, fans from Brazil, the UK, Canada, Japan, and all across the U.S. chose Bang Bang Bar as the place to be on a cold Saturday night. Hosted by local emcee Ricardo Moz and Apollo DJ, the night turned into one for the history books. Bang Bang Bar is easily one of Texas' best dive-lounge bars...the perfect blend of gritty and cozy. Great cocktail program, solid beer selection, and a vibe that just works. The décor leans heavy into a 1950s-60s lounge aesthetic, with intimate spaces like the Blue Room and Yellow Room, perfect for groups of 7-10. Low lighting, warm atmosphere, and zero pretension exactly what you want for a night like this. Bang Bang Bar consistently supports local and touring acts, spanning punk, alternative, and DJ-driven nights, and this Moz Smiths Disco was no exception. It was wall-to-wall classics all night long. Major credit to Phanie and the Bang Bang Bar management they rolled up their sleeves, brought in extra bar staff, and handled an overwhelming crowd like pros. Fans waited up to 45 minutes in the cold, with a line wrapping around the building, and the energy inside never dipped. As the host of Panic On The Streets, I'm incredibly thankful to Bang Bang Bar for helping us pull off one of the best after-parties we've done in years. Fittingly, 2026 marks the 10-year anniversary of both Bang Bang Bar and Panic On The Streets of San Antonio and what a way to celebrate. Bang Bang Bar has long been one of my favorite bars in town, and after this night, that reputation is more than earned. Can't wait to do another Moz Smiths Disco here. -- Panic On The Streets of San Antonio

First things first: it was crowded af but her homeboy and another fan of mine snagged a prime table. The server came quickly and we got our drink order in and waited...and waited.... Then took our food order, and waited...and waited.... When everything came out, it was delicious and well prepared. Strong drinks, delicious pizza, color me happy. The service was a bit slow, but it's forgiven being how crowded it was. The place oozed fun and we had a reality good time. The vibe was relaxed and fun with no sour faces to be seen. We'll go back, crowded or not, it's worth the trip and my #1 fan and mainest girl loved it as well.

Usually, the bar seating is first come, first served. However, today there were two reserved spots at the bar, and the bartender was actively clearing anyone who tried to sit in them. What was more frustrating was watching the seating situation while I waited. There were three booths and two tables being held with reserved signs, yet during the almost hour I spent waiting, no one sat at any of those tables. I completely understand having reservations and managing seating accordingly, but it was difficult to understand why so much seating was being held while guests were waiting. If those tables were reserved for a specific time, it would have been helpful to have some communication about that. I've enjoyed Barbaro in the past, which is why I wanted to share this feedback. Hopefully the seating process can be made a little clearer and more accommodating for guests waiting to be seated.

Gotta say, I think it will. You walk in through the patio which is a completely different (relaxing) vibe than the bar itself. The music is noticeably different, but nice if you're trying to have an intimate conversation. Walking in, the place is decorated nicely. I'm not sure what the theme is but by the signs exclaiming "t*Ts are awesome" and "girls girls girls" I'm assuming the name is not because Cash Rules Everything Around Me. The bartender was nice and friendly. They have specialty drinks, drink + shot combos, and packaged beers. The drink prices were more than reasonable. Dive bar prices with a very nice ambience. The music was great and spanned decades and genres. I found myself dancing in my seat and enjoying my time. It wasn't very crowded but after scouring their social media they've been open for about a month. I'm anxious to see their late night food menu. I've already made plans with friends to come back and check it out. Five stars for potential. I enjoyed my time there and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to others. TL;DR: cheap drinks, fun vibe, spacious and well decorated, classy with affordable drinks that won't break the bank. Fingers crossed on the kitchen, not yet open
