Overpriced! TERRIBLE food! Shameful! $8 for a glass of kool-aid?! $8 for a glass of water with a cucumber slice?! Both beverages marketed as something else Mac n cheese: Stiff and a notch above room temperature Oxtail: overcooked and garnished whole garlic cloves Collards greens: WHOLE leaf swimming in hot sauce water. Yams: Mush and allspice. That's all Come on "establishment"! Whyyyy would you try and pass this off as a fine dining experience in Compton?! Putting the sides on separate plates does NOT equate to a fine dining experience. I had high expectations and was excited to support. The restaurant esthetic was top notch both exterior and interior. Everything went downhill from there. Beyond disappointed!! Let's NOT eat soulfood here!

First I did not expect to spend this much time at this restaurant. Just know, order to go, cause the wait at the table once seated is wild. It wasn't even that many people in here. It was maybe 4 other tables with people when we walked in. So I'm not sure why the long wait, but I digress. The music was on point the whole time. They was playing all the jams. Greens 10/10 Oxtails 8/10 need more gravy/juice Cornbread 9/10 not too sweet but a hint Mac n cheese- 8/10 Shrimp and grits 9/10 Sweet tea 10/10 Dining experience 7/10 The waiter provided good service 10/10

Us and Chef "Rob"

Food, experience atmosphere, and staff was absolutely outstanding!! Shout out to Nylah our lovely host , and Chef Robinson or like my husband has given him the aka "Chef Rob" who served his delicious Gumbo to our table personally, thank you thank you thank you!! This was definitely worth fighting through traffic from Santa Monica and to enjoy an amazing experience, fantastic food, cool ass vibe and meet beautiful people!!

Saturday 5/9/26 2pm. Nala greeted us upon arrival and also was our server. She was excellent as a server, friendly, very respectful and constantly checking on us. I really appreciated how the cooks/chefs brought our food out to us individually. Now the food. We ordered oxtails which were very tender and flavorful. Same with the yams, cabbage, Mac and cheese and cornbread. I had the Gumbo which was 10/10 plus. Lots of flavor, shrimp, meat and crabs. We will definitely return. Thanks again to Nala and the entire staff.

Seafood Gumbo

Fine Dining in Compton. Yes, this place has the touch.Staff were attentive & accomodating. Food was Flavorful & refinely seasoned Soul Food; meanting its refreshing to your palate but satisfty to your stomach. Prices were upscale to refine dining. Main Course meal averages around $22 to $35. It includes Protein & Starch. Everything else was Al Carte even the Beverages. The Best Deal would be the Gumbo; you get seafood not the fillers. It has plenty of Crab & Shrimp for the price. My only discourse was the Yams: it was overly season with cinnamon/nutmeg & mushy. The vibe was relaxing & calming with a decent music selection. They have a mural of Calli's Iconic Rappers/Athlectes/Civil Right leaders/Hip-Hop music/movie producers. It's an visionary place were you feel empower to do greatness. Yes i would refer this place to those looking for place to decompress from the hustles bustle. Check them out. Coming soon will be Live band.

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE Stood outside for over an hour waiting for the chef's family and friends to finish dining. If he was going to host family and friends that should have been done the day before or he should have waited to open up for the public the day after grand opening. When finally let inside to the waiting area, sat there for about 20 minutes before seating. I was expecting to see a crowded dining area, with all the tables filled. No!!!Most of the tables were empty. Not sure what the extra long what was for other than the Host just walking all around looking lost . Taking his gloves off then putting them back on. Going in one door coming out another. Now the food, the food, the food. First they ran out of most of everything on the menu. By the time I sat to place my order I felt like I was being served scraps. The food came to the table dry, flavorless and cold. The drinks are limited to their special drinks and tap water. No diet soda or juice.

Salmon, oxtails, gumbo, red beans and rice, cornbread, yams, and Mac n cheese

It has good service, the food was good. Only complaint is that the mac n cheese kinda tastes like garlic bread and it was a bit oily. Some food was hot and some was just warm but that's up to preference. Good portion sizes. Local business that deserves support!

SHRIMP AND GRITS DAAAAAAAAMMMMMMM!!!!!!! This the best shrimp and grit I've ever had.

My review is based on the food truck. It was my son's birthday. He was allowed to chose anything he wanted for dinner. Any price point... anything. Well i had seen this on Instagram and shared it with him two weeks prior. At first he wanted to go to Nobu or there were a few other high end options, but that is not his style honestly. Luckily, he remembered the post that I shared. He wanted to go here. Well, buckle up kids, we are going on a field trip! We left work/schools early and took a drive to Compton. When our navigation said we had arrived it suggested we park in the lot across from the library. Ok. There directly in front of the library was the food truck. There was a small line, so that was ideal. Not a long wait. My other smaller human and i went to wash their hands in the library. When i came out he had ordered the hungry man or something. It was more than enough for us. The oxtail was good. The ribs were good. The chicken was good. The cornbread was yummy. Just not over the moon for the greens... and i loooove collard greens. But that's ok. We went for the meats. They were out of the dinosaur ribs, so maybe if we go early enough next time, we can try those. We took it across the street to the park and ate and that was enough time for the small one to also play to get energy out before we headed home. The drive home was long, now that rush hour traffic had started. But none of us complained, because the meal was worth it.

My family and I came to M&M's Soul Food Restaurant after a funeral service on Tuesday, and I can honestly say this place exceeded every expectation. Every single dish we ordered was outstanding. The short ribs, fried chicken, oxtails, catfish, collard greens, cabbage, macaroni and cheese, black eyed peas, yams, rice and gravy, cornbread, and even the sweet tea were absolutely delicious. It's rare to find a restaurant where everything is that good, but they pulled it off. The service was just as impressive as the food. Every person who helped us was friendly, welcoming, and had a great attitude. That's how customer service is supposed to be. We had a large group, and not one person had a single complaint--which is saying a lot! The atmosphere was warm, comfortable, and inviting. The music was great. Even though we live in the San Fernando Valley, I would absolutely make a special trip just to eat here again. And anytime I'm in the area, this will definitely be my go-to spot--even if it's just to grab some wings to go. Y'all deserve more than five stars. Thank you for the amazing food, outstanding service, and wonderful experience. Keep up the great work!

I've been here a few times before, mainly for the sides, but after this experience I honestly don't know if I'll return. I ordered a lunch chicken plate and was never told it would take over 40 minutes. Had I known, I either wouldn't have ordered or would have asked for a refund much sooner. Meanwhile, customer after customer who ordered after me received their food before I did. When I finally got my order, there was no apology or acknowledgment of the delay. I asked if there was anything they could do for the inconvenience, and the only thing offered was a free slushy. I don't even drink soda. A side dish or something more thoughtful would have made more sense. To make matters worse, when I got home, the chicken portion was very small and the two sides were tiny about the size of dressing cups. It's disappointing because I actually do like their flavors, but good food only goes so far when the customer service experience is this poor.

The best soul food not in Grandma's kitchen…read more My family and I had a 5-star experience at this soon-to-be LA staple. We were greeted at the door by security, who opened it for every customer. His attitude was pleasant, and he had a genuine smile. Not one of those false demonstrations of civility. When you walk in, the smell of the food automatically turns you from hungry to excitedly starving. One of the keys to good food is the aroma from the kitchen. We were ushered to the back, Sunday Church pun intended. Our server got us wonderful drinks. Then we ordered our food, and when those soulful southern dishes arrived, it was the crown jewel of the experience. They looked as good as they tasted. We not only enjoyed the food, but Lonell came and chatted with us. He was genuinely concerned with the quality of our food and service, which was exceptional. On the way out, we asked for a picture and promised to come back whenever we are in the LA area. Please try this for yourself and post your favorite food.

Lonells -- Juneteenth Experience…read more Live music drew us in, but the visit was deeply disappointing. I wrestled with writing this review precisely because it's Black-owned, but the experience spoke for itself. Ambience and service were positives: a warm greeting from Lonnel, sweet waitress, and a friendly bartender. However, beef was unavailable on the day despite Friday/Saturday promises, and the food failed to justify the price. A friend's fried chicken arrived raw--we know what cooked fried chicken should taste and look like, having eaten fried chicken plenty of times. The chef dismissed the concern and offered only a $5 discount, eroding trust in safety and quality. Overall, none of the dishes hit the mark. The hospitality was the bright spot; otherwise, the experience did not reflect the concept or value. I wouldn't return, but hope for improved consistency and safety. Giving it 1 Star for our waitress and the bartender.

I dont know if the cook was feeling special on that day if that's how they normally make it but I was blown away. I have to try try it again to make sure they got that recipie on lock. It was creamy cheesy, flavorful, spiced to perfection. Honestly one of the best representations of this dish I've I've ever had ( top 3 for sure ). Nice amount of shrimp and omg when you eat a large bowl of grits you stay full for a long time.
