I gotta thank my South Carolina buddy Ron for that "great country" line, he texted it back to me after I texted him a photo of the table thingy with an explanation. We loved our visit yesterday -great beer selection, super friendly service, a big spacious seating area (with a large outdoor seating option), terrific artwork on the walls that's for sale, and very nice food service as well. They had sixteen beers on tap yesterday, a nice selection representing different beer styles, and not overly IPA dependent, like some of the breweries I visit. I saw lagers, stouts, and a Kolsch. IPAs were well represented with Imperial Double, Session, New England, and milkshake IPA variants. My wife went with a 16-ounce draft of Weekend Warrior (American Lager - 5% ABV) for a very reasonable $5. I wanted their 12-ounce draft of Keepers of the Cake: Birthday Cake W/Raspberry & Strawberry (a White Stout - 6% ABV) for $8, but that wasn't available, so I went with their unfruited version of the same for $7. I loved my beer and sipped the Weekend Warrior too -both were excellent! Some of the names on the beer list made me chuckle -Pink Slip, Severance Package, Performance Review, and Big Riff. There's live music on Friday nights, and occasional food truck on site, and a separate food vendor (separate ordering and payment) in the back. We got a pretzel and a damned fine loaded hot dog. So where did the brewery's name come from? Years ago, Mark -the current Head Brewer's wife gave him a home beer brewing kit as a birthday gift. He entered a few beer competitions and won, including the prestigious Worthy Brewfest. The website puts it this way "Mark coined the name of the company based off his wish of one day quitting his desk job to pursue his dream of owning and operating his own brewery. It was not long until Mark was absolutely determined to become a true contributor in the craft beer community he loved." Mark found a business partner in his old boss, and the two of them quit together to open the brewery. As my buddy Ron said, is this a great country or what?

Periodically Flywheel puts on large scale shows featuring acts like Fugazi and Le Tigre. Flywheel is currently on hiatus due to the renovations being performed on their relocation space in the former town hall. Their previous site featured a cafe, zine library, art gallery, and performance space. Local scenester tip: Don't call it "The Flywheel". I look forward to visiting them in their new incarnation!

Because of our long-standing connection to the space, my husband and I chose it for our wedding celebration, placing our deposit with the previous owners, who were professional and supportive throughout the process. After the property changed ownership, we still proceeded with our event in October. This celebration held particular significance, as my father was seriously ill at the time, and we were grateful he was able to attend. Unfortunately, our experience with the new ownership raised serious concerns about professionalism, transparency, and respect for both clients and staff. On the day of the event, the owner attempted to impose additional charges not outlined in our contract. This included a demand for a $500 fee for using a room to get ready--a space she had explicitly told me I could use earlier in the day, noting it was acceptable despite the building being under construction. While I was getting ready, she entered the room while my mother and a family friend were assisting me and removed a rug from beneath them, stating that I "wasn't supposed to use the room all day." I chose not to address this at the time in order to preserve the tone of the day. Throughout the event, the owner was also openly drinking at the open bar, which had been paid for by my father. As the night concluded, she insisted that I personally break down the entire venue either immediately or first thing the following morning--despite knowing I had family visiting--or I would be charged for a cleaning crew. This expectation had not been communicated beforehand and was not included in the contract. When I suggested discussing it the next day, she continued to press the issue and confronted my husband, who attempted to redirect the conversation. To avoid further escalation, my friends and I cleaned the venue that night--while I was still in my wedding dress. She later stated that she would retain space heaters I had purchased in exchange for waiving the disputed room fee. When I noted that none of these charges or arrangements were contractually agreed upon, she responded, "I'm expensive, and I'm not in the contract either, honey," in reference to her being casted on The Real Housewives of New York City. Additionally, her conduct toward long-standing staff members--many of whom had supported the venue for years--was concerning and contributed to an atmosphere that felt transactional rather than community-centered. Some of those staff members have since left the venue. What was most troubling was the timing and context. The attempts to extract additional money occurred at the end of a wedding celebration involving a seriously ill parent, placing unnecessary stress on a family during an already significant moment. We already booked a room at a different location before we knew the MGM was there. We utilized our MGM cards (MGM really supports Veterans) for parking (did not have too as it was free-LOL). We parked, toured the casino, grabbed a sandwich and took advantage of the clean restrooms. We were at the Riverside park when it started sprinkling, so went back to parking garage. We found out they had a free party going upper level of garage with a cover band. We listened to the band, grabbed some food hot off the grill for a reasonable price and prepared to view the fireworks from the cover of the garage. Mother -Nature had other plans, weather turned nasty, band shut-down, and for safety we were moved to lower levels. We still saw the fireworks and exiting afterwards was not terrible. The Staff from Security to Food Venders were polite and helpful the whole evening. They saved our families 4th of July in Springfield.
