The salon is very cute and a great part of the Assumption Parish/Estudillo Estates neighborhood. I scheduled an appointment with Peggy for a haircut/blowout. Peggy was punctual and greeted me looking put together (cute hair). I'm always hesitant when stylists have their hair sloppily done or their hair looks mistreated. I mentioned what I thought I wanted and she chimed in with some great suggestions and went to it. This review is for IRENE! I originally found her through Groupon and purchased a deal for a single-process color because I wanted to go back to something more natural. My hair was originally dark, dark brown, almost black and has been dyed many times over the years and was a light brown with dirty blonde ombre when I went to Irene. She brought my hair back to a beautiful dark brown shade that I asked for. She listened to exactly what I wanted and made sure to disclose any important information to me before proceeding on my hair so I knew what was going on. She was very, very friendly to talk to and made the experience so great! I will definitely be back if I am ever in the area. I was absolutely thrilled with the cut I got from John Yates! He is clearly very skilled and the cut he gave my was exactly what I wanted even though I'm not sure how good I was at articulating what I wanted! I have straight, fine hair and have lost a lot post-partum but that was no problem for John. I left the salon feeling like a million bucks. I would like to send a big thank you to Mrs. Dianna, for squeezing me in this week to do a color make over. Earlier this year I had done purple peek a boo's in my hair by my normal schedule hair dresser, but since my last visit I haven't been able to go back for a touch up... So needless to say I went months with a faded purple which at some point started to become pink and just pure blonde. And just my luck my best friend decided to get marry and I hadn't been to see my hair dresser (to top it off I'm the maid of honor) so something had to be done quickly...I needed this matter taken care of and correctly. So Mrs Dianna came to my rescue!!! She took out all the faded washed out color, and transformed my hair to a magic chocolate brown. Now I look like an honorable maid of honor... I needed a last minute appointment for my wedding hair and makeup and found Level 5 because it's so close to my parents house. And when I say last minute...I mean literally, the day before. The woman who answered the phone told me that Peggy does wedding hair and makeup and that she'd ask her to call me as soon as she got in. She did, and I had an appointment the next day. Peggy was great in person as well as doing my makeup. I gave her pretty minimal direction but she did ask me to text her pictures of me and hair and makeup inspirations prior to appointment. At the end I got exactly what I wanted -- makeup that would look great in pictures but also allowed me to be me. This review is for John Yates who not only was an excellent stylist, he was professional, meticulous and friendly. I found Level 5 on Yelp and John was available for a last minute appointment. He worked on my wavy & dried up hair, and he transformed it so beautifully. Got my keratin treatment and basic cut for $225 which was a really good deal since he really took time to fix my previous sloppy cut (never going back there again, it's somewhere in Fremont) and treated it with keratin. I've had keratin treatments before but I noticed John was really patient with how he did my hair and was very careful in putting the keratin on. I remembered my eyes were burning almost the entire time I got my hair done when I had my last treatment. And my hair is so nice and smooth now, and the cut is very flattering. Thanks John! And he gave great tips and suggestions on how to take care of it so the keratin treatment would last longer. read more

I've been here a few times and am getting the sense that the stylists don't like to listen. Peggy cut my hair maybe three times and each time I asked her specifically not to cut my bangs since I was trying to grow them out. My hair was pretty damaged from swimming and coloring so when she cut my bangs anyway the first couple of times, I wasn't too mad. They were pretty fried. However, they last time my hair was in much better condition and I told her repeatedly NOT to touch my bangs. She cut them again! Not by much but really, they haven't grown a lick in MONTHS and I'm so tired of it!!! A few days ago, I took my husband in to see Rosa for a haircut. I told her I wanted his hair below the eyes. She proceeded to ask me how long it had been since he had a haircut. I said maybe 6 months and she said "so, like 3 inches off then?" I said"...yes, two or three. Right below the eyes." Inches can be a little tricky, but I gave this lady a landmark and she ended up cutting him way above the eyebrow. Awesome. When I told her it was too short, she was apologetic and said "next time, I'll know." Oh ok, NEXT time you'll know English? NEXT time, you'll actually listen to me?" No next time. I am officially done with Level 5. Another thing, my cuts have ALWAYS been 15-20 minutes late and I have NEVER received a phone call to warn me. I know schedules usually run behind but my last stylist was always good about texting me and keeping me in the loop. That's a HUGE deal. Waiting at home is way better than waiting in a salon. read more

Still on my quest to find a person who can cut medium length hair right. I can't say that I had the worse haircut ever here, but for the price it is pretty bad. I thought I was just a harsh critic of myself. But around $70 for a haircut that all my friends say I over paid and looks average at best, I knew the quality at level 5 salon was subpar. People here do not know how to do layers AT ALL. I have three layers of hair so distinct and thick it actually looks like someone took a ruler, cut my hair, moved the ruler two inches down, and cut my hair again. You can actually see a horizontal line where they cut the layer, and its right in the middle of my hair. So it looks like I have longer hair and then put a shorter bob wig on top of it. Just horrible. I usually don't care about service if the quality is good. However, the service is definitely lacking. The hair dresser kept mentioning that her next appointment was here already. She didn't even check my hair after cutting it wet and just proceded to blow dry it (found out one side is longer by 1/2in in the front when I went home). Then she said she would curl my hair for me. I should have said no because she did it really fast and was yanking my hair with the iron to finish. I honestly felt that she just wanted to get my haircut over with and take my money because it was obvious she was rushing. My hair dresser allocates will have no problem giving you a speedy super-cuts style haircut. read more

For the past year I have been growing my hair from a short bob to a "lob." No matter what I seem to do I can't grow it long and my hair constantly messy even after a haircut. I expressed my frustration to my previous stylist, who finally told me that my hair has never recovered from the postpartum loss and thinness (even though my baby is 20 months!), that like a chef, he "can only deliver good hair if he has good ingredients." Ouch. I asked if there is anything he can do to fix my hair, he combs and toss through my hair and says that he has done everything right and there is nothing he can suggest other than calling the doctor. Double ouch. After swallowing my tears, getting a lab test, and visiting my doctor to confirm that I am not suffering from a medical problem, I made an appointment online and visited Rosa at Level 5 salon for a second opinion. She has been highly recommended by more than a few friends of mine. I decided I needed a second opinion -- Even if I am still trying to recover from postpartum hair loss, I know that there has to be a way to make my hair look better! After looking at the hairstyles I pinned on my Pinterest iPhone app and discussing what problems I have been having, Rosa told me that I will continue to be frustrated my hair if I try to grow it long because of the uneven layers. She understod that I did not want to go back to my usual bob haircut and assured me that I can make a fabulous change and go for that pixie cut I have been considering. At first I was a bit scared seeing all the 5-6 inches of hair that fell to the floor, but I am so pleased with my hair once it was all done. I have cut 10 minutes from my post shower hair drying and styling routine. I have been told that I look younger, and I definitely feel more confident in my new hair as well. I am really glad that I visited Rosa, who listened to me with empathy. Maybe it is because she knows what being a mom is like, she treated me with a compassion and understood my wish to solve my hair problem. I have learned that a good stylist is not just someone who can cut a particular style of hair, but also come up with good solutions to self-esteem crushing problems while listening empathetically. I live in San Leandro and after driving by Level 5 I don't know how many times, I decided to try them out. So I made the plunge and got an appointment with Sue. It was the best thing I've done in a long time! I have never felt more comfortable with a hairstylist before. I have thick, curly, unmanageable hair and Sue was able to work wonders with it. From the stylist who cut my hair to the warm ambiance of the place, coming to Level 5 Salon has been one of the best hair salon experiences of my life! All the stylists at this place work independently and by appointment only. I made my appointment with Suzette McD and let me say, she's not only amazing but she truly understands all types of hair, especially curly hair. She really listened to my hair troubles, offered good suggestions and advice on hair care, and gave me a great haircut! Best of all, she also does on-line appointments. Not only will you get an email reminder of the upcoming hair appointment but you may also reschedule/cancel up to 12 hours before the scheduled appointment on-line. Just had a cut again recently and figured a review was quite overdo. I kinda followed Sue here from the previous place she worked at, although at that time, I wasn't getting my hair cut by her as consistently as I am now. My first experience with Sue (outside of our usual Zocalo interactions) was when I finally decided to cut my long (i.e. almost to my butt) hair OFF. Sue was very comforting and reassuring, and when I told her I didn't have a magazine to show her what I wanted, she said it didn't matter anyway, really, bc everyone's face shape is different, and a cut on one person won't necessarily look the same on another. Well, Sue did me up so good, my hair has been short ever since. I had someone else keeping it up for awhile and finally went back to Sue, and man, if she ever moves, I'm gonna cry! I usually come in with a pretty basic idea of what I want, and I let Sue take it wherever she wants, and I haven't been disappointed. She always excited to do my hair, probably bc I'm open to whatever she wants. More often than not, I leave the shop with compliments from other ladies getting their do's did, and I can't wait to show it off. Her prices are reasonable ($45 for a cut and wash), and I'm a firm believer in "you get what you pay for." My hair is so much more...fun. I can't believe I went all those years with flat straight hair that did little to compliment my features...never again! The shop is clean and has a great feel to it. I even love the bathroom in this place. Water or tea while waiting for you appointment? Don't mind if I do! And everyone here is pretty friendly. This shop is community-minded, hosting clothing swaps, offering free cuts to those donating to Locks of Love (not sure if this is ongoing), and donating hair clippings to be used to clean up oil spills. (Check it out on youtube--pretty fascinating!) Oh, and I forgot to mention that Sue now books appointments online! If you're like me, you'll appreciate being able to schedule/cancel/reschedule appointments without having to bother with a phone call, leaving a message, waiting to hear back, returning a message, and...well, you get my point. Came year almost a year ago from a Groupon or Living Social deal. Peggy did an amazing job on my hair. I told her I wanted something simple and that would accommodate my hair growing out. Probably around that time, it was well above my shoulders. It was a great wash and air-dry hair cut and it looked better (but heavy) as it got longer. At the time, she gave me exactly what I wanted - a nice haircut that would sustain the growing out process. She is one of those salon professionals that I remember after so long because I was that satisfied with my haircut. And now, I finally return the favor by writing a review. During the haircut, she talked about how she informally cut hair for ages and then went to beauty school so she has way more experience than one may assume. I rarely write reviews, however gotta give credit where credit it due!!! Peggy, stylist at Level 5 was AWESOME!! Not only was she able to revive my hair and make me look stylish, but she also listened to my concerns and did what was right for ME!! My hair really needed some expert help in the color department as I had all kinds of crazy and un healthy things going on but Peggy has a great style and great suggestions but didn't over due it when she heard my hesitation and concerns and my hair color came out PERFECT!! She also has plans for me for the next season to keep me current :) Along with the great hair styling, Peggy is warm, funny and accomodating. Didn't have to wait at all and was very pleasant and understanding with my constant rescheduling on her. She has always been awesome, friendly, professional and accommodating (always willing to try and fit me in-my schedule is ridiculous). I didn't expect that this salon, tucked away in sleepy San Leandro, would have certified and trained specialists in Yuko and ISO straightening. Really?! And yes, they do and they're good. A few weeks ago I went in to straighten my cowlicked, frizzy hair. I was tired of wrangling my cowlicks and waves with flat iron, blow dryer and round brush on a daily basis. I wanted to streamline the routine and gain some morning time with my family. Some of my girlfriends got the japanese straightening treatment and were happy with their hassle free hair. I wanted the same and started researching for places, expecting that I would be trekking to San Francisco. When I found Rosa on Yuko's list, I was a little dubious. The reviews posted here on yelp swayed me to call and make that appointment. I don't regret it. Rosa is friendly, knowledgable, warm, and professional. She took time for an initial consult to make sure I understood the treatment, the process and that I wanted bone straight hair. She also carefully listened to me, asking polite questions about me, my schedule, and lifestyle to better understand what I wanted and needed. I appreciated this since it's a permanent change and she genuinely didn't want me unhappy. The hair straightening process took 3 hours. At each step, Rosa told me what she was doing, what I needed to do, and what she was expected to happen. It was helpful to know and better understand the lengthy process. Overall, the whole process went fine and I left with shiny, soft and perfectly straight hair.
