Came here on my last day before heading to the airport towards Baltimore. My fiance and I came in about 7 am, ordered two veggie bagel sandwiches, one salmon lox bagel, chocolate croissant, and an Orangina. 1) Veggie Bagel: alfafa sprouts, veggie, but no cream cheese? A little plain, since I'm used to places putting cream cheese even with a veggie sandwich, but that's okay. The meal came with a side of cucumbers each. 2) Salmon Lox: onion, lox, cream cheese, tomato, capers = the regulars. Pretty good! 3) Chocolate croissant: this was HUGE! however, I didn't like the chocolate part much, but I would get it again if I was really craving for one. I can't give a review of my sandwich, because I ended up walking out. I have always had exceptional service from the owners of this shop but today, was a completely different story. They must have hired a new employee, she had dark long curly hair and glasses. The situation was horrible. I asked the woman what kind of bread is available for a sandwich. Clearly, there were about 5 different kind, but the woman said she only has sourdough. Next, I let her know that I would like to create my own sandwich. To which she replied "all of our sandwiches are up there" I said, I know but I want to make my own. She rolled her eyes and I ended up saying that "it's obviously to much trouble so just forget it".. This woman has a horrible attitude and she needs better training on customer service! They lost my business this afternoon and I most likely will not be returning. read more

I grew up in NYC and I know a pretty good bagel. I've lived in Alameda for 14 years and have often lamented the mediocre bagel selections. When Levy's opened, I dropped in on opening day and had a bagel and i really thought it wasn't great. It was too doughy without the good crusty exterior so I didn't go back for some time. But recently I was headed off the island early in the morning and really wanted a bagel with creme cheese and dropped by again. This time, the bagel was... near perfect? An ideal, crusty exterior, with a soft interior that wasn't too heavy, but not overly light and roll-like either. I had to make sure it wasn't a small sample size, so i've been going back there frequently for a sesame bagel, salmon schmear, tomato and onion (rough I know) on many mornings and I'll say the bagels are consistent, and really, really good. My daughter and I just got done getting a haircut this morning and we were craving a good bagel. Levy's Bagels was just down the street so we stopped over there and not, were we glad we did! The service is amazing and the servers are very cheerful. I ordered a sesame seed bagel toasted with lox and it was really good. I treated myself to Peerless coffee, and my 15 month old to her first toasted bagel with cream cheese, at Levys last Saturday. I ordered a cheddar cheese bagel off a rather messy chalk board menu overhead. Coffee and a bagel cost $5.06. Coffee is self-serve. Bagels are toasted and smeared quickly. The amount of cream cheese is almost overwhelming, with or without the toddler smearing it all over her face and their high chair. read more

I hate reading long reviews so here's a snapshot: The bagels are amazing. I am in NY right now and haven't found a bagel as good as Levy's. I get the lox trim on an onion bagel. The prices are cheap compared to other lox bagels I've had from shops in Cali and NY. For those who are sensitive about service at a bagel shop, they are always very nice and trying their best. Is the service unnecessarily complicated sometimes? Yes. Could they do things more efficiently? Yes. But, they are new and trying. They will learn. So, I am not a huge bagel person. I'll eat a whole wheat bagel with cream cheese jelly but that's about it. HOWEVER, a good friend of mine and my parents love the Loxs bagels (smoked salmon, plain cream cheese, tomato, onion, capers). I didn't think I'd like it but man oh man its DELICIOUS. I get mine without the onion though. Since I had a craving and was in Alameda at a friends, i decided to grab one from Levy's. The man who helped me was so pleasant and helpful. He made the bagel super quick and I was in and out within 5 minutes. The bagel itself was super tasty. I ate the ENTIRE thing and I am sure I bit my fingers a couple times trying to get all the goodness. I wanted my bagel fix and my go to for bagels (Bagel Street cafe), isn't open on Sunday! I googled other bagel shops near me and came across Levy's Bagels & Co. I told the cashier my story of what brought me there and he asked me what's the name of the bagel shop I normally go to, and when I told him, he told me his bagels are better than there's! I should've took it as a warning red flag especially for charging extra for certain bagels (eye roll). I'm not going back to Levy's. I am sticking to what I know is the best! Way to go Levy's for authentic, carby, bagels! My go to breakfast is the morning star with sausage on a scooped out garlic bagel add red onions and tomato. Scooping out the middle makes me feel less guilty having it everyday. They have pretty nice size sandwiches too. Hot pastrami on rye, load the vegies and deli mustard me crazy. The atmosphere is small and quaint, few pictures on the wall that reminds me of my granny's living room.... I don't mind it, I love my granny! I was born and raised in Massachusetts. I've been excited about this place from it's description as a decent bagel-boiling establishment. Sadly it did not meet my optimistic expectations. I'm rounding up my rating to three stars as a benefit-of-the-doubt--it's a new business and I've only visited once. Earning my bagel loyalty requires at least a hard 4 star review. I bought 2 plain bagels, 1 egg bagel, and 1 everything bagel. Straight-up. This review does not address their sandwiches at all. Atmosphere: Loud. Any pleasant bakery smell is completely overwhelmed by various of the cheeses. With a crowd in the line the entire place felt busy. Bagels: While they boil the bagels, they were still very light, rather than chewy. The flavors are muted--I wouldn't buy a plain bagel here, it doesn't pass the yummy-carbs test. That said, they *are* more traditional than House of Bagels. A half-decent Noah's Bagel's in town would probably be my preference. The nearest good bagels to Alameda I've found seems to be Authenticate Bagels in Jack London Square. read more
