This winery just about an hour outside of Milwaukee is a real gem! In addition to a nice selection of whites and reds, they had sangria slushees! I was able to add one to my flight of cabs, so refreshing. I enjoyed getting to try a bunch of different barrel aged cabernets. They gave a nice food menu. When wine tasting, you have to get a charcuterie board. At least that's my opinion and the cheeses, meat, peach jam and nuts did not disappoint. We also got a pepperoni pizza. Their crust is amazing! It's not thin but it's not too thick either. It's kind of bubbly and airy. We enjoyed their outdoor patio. Normally I'd say it was a beautiful space and leave it at that. Now with COVID, and I'll add a bit more. Tables were spaced out for distancing, no more than 6 people at a table, no moving chairs or table. Staff all wearing masks and wearing them correctly. This was the perfect spot for me (coming from Milwaukee) to meet up with a friend coming from Madison. We parked by the park across the street, which is cute and clean, but small. We walked the dog first to eliminate some energy and then sat in a lovely corner patio table nicely shaded by an umbrella. They have $10 wine flights composed of any 4 of their wines at 2 oz each. Their wines are varied and I enjoyed the dry rose, pinot noir, cab sav aged in barrels, and sweet red. They were all good! The Lewis salad for lunch was fresh and flavorful. So happy to have taken the road sign's advice to see Legendary Lake Mills. We had a great meal and a superb bottle of Zin. Nice atmosphere, better than average cuisine and reasonably priced means a happy family. The pizza was fresh, clearly homemade ingredients and filling. Saw this winery on Trip Advisor web ad. Cute--looks like an old gas station, complete with classic pumps. Good selection of tasty wine. I would up buying a selection of Cabernets and Pinot Noirs. First off this place is very cute and even better in the summer with the outdoor patio! The food is delicious (best food I've had in Lake Mills) and you can tell that the chef knows what he's doing. The woman behind the tasting bar where you also order your food seemed a bit condescending, I think she needs to lighten up a little bit more! The chef was very nice. Although, they do not let you change up ANYTHING with the food when you order. We wanted to take the cheese off of some salads and we were told we couldn't do that because it would ruin the salad....just a little odd. A mostly unknown Diamond in the Rough! If you have never been here there are a few simple things to know. If you are a foodie, you have to come on a Wednesday. There is an impressive array of buffet items, mostly locally sourced. The buffet is all you can eat for $25 and that includes 2 drinks. Chef Jason is amazing! You also need to know that this is not high end fancy. The wine tasting room and excess tables are located in a converted gas station. The kitchen is tiny, the food coming out is fabulous, but do to the size of the kitchen, there is no dishwasher, food is consumed off of plastic plates and throw away silverware. There is very limited servers if any. So, please don't be put off by the laid back atmosphere. That would keep you from enjoying the really great food. We have been so impressed with Chef Jason and his lovely wife and their food that we booked their back room for a private anniversary dinner for 34 people. We had family that came from Costa Rica, Toronto, Colorado, St. Louis, Milwaukee, Madison and many of them are pretty choosy foodies. This isn't a wine review. Lewis Station makes some great wines. But, my wife is the cork dork. I'm the whiskey guy. What I do want to talk about is the food. I'm gluten-free. That's a big deal when eating out. When your wife wants to hang out at the winery and there is a sign suggesting garlic rolls coated in garlic and oil and parmesan, and, oh yeah, by the way, we make it with gluten-free dough, my mouth watered and my wife could essentially buy the store and I wouldn't notice. The rolls took a while to get to the table. Obviously, they were made fresh. The truth? I would have waited twice as long. These rolls were manna from heaven! I'm sure I plowed through them faster than should have. I was eating the rolls, eating the crumbs, eating the minced garlic and couldn't get enough. My wife asked if I planned to lick the plate and, to be quite honest, the thought crossed my mind. The bill came to $12 plus tip. Yeah, I know what you're thinking: $12 for rolls? First of all, this was easily a meal. Second of all, it has been years since I've had garlic rolls and thirdly, most gluten-free bread sucks beyond description. These rolls were light, fluffy and chewy. There are a variety of other dishes, and as they came out, the portions were humongous and most of their selection can be made gluten-free. This place has so much potential but I have to agree with the other reviews regarding the customer service. It is not welcoming in the least. The counter where you do the tasting was all cluttered and the woman behind the counter was so busy conducting some type of business on the phone on and off that she was barely able to give us our sampling. There was no information given on the wine at all. I did ask if all the grapes were local to find out that they do purchase some grapes from Lodi Ca. I seriously do not think they will be in business long if she continues to treat people like she would like to just tell them to get the f-out. It was weird. They do have an entire side that looks like it is set up to do olive oil tasting and possible demonstrations. There was nobody over there to talk to so nothing was purchased or looked at over on that side either. Just strange. I'm trying to understand the prior ratings of Lewis Station's product and personnel. I understand when there is bad customer service, but we found quite the contrary. I am a oenophile to some extent, even though I cannot boast sommelier status or certifications. I'm a collector of wines and appreciate all varieties and creative attempts at producing quality vino. I will always give a winery a chance, even in cases when the grapes are not local. Unless you're Wollersheim, it's difficult to have locally harvested grapes. We have to support our neighborhood businesses, as long as they're doing their due diligence to offer a great product and provide exceptional customer service. At the very least, a patron should receive happy service. We walked in Lewis Station's tasting room on a rainy Friday afternoon. The lady behind the counter--I feel bad that I do not know her name--was pleasant in welcoming us and asked if we would like to do a tasting. She explained how it worked, went through the wines on the list and highlighted those that even won awards. I'm not sure who or what bestowed the honors (I don't think it was Wine Spectator, but it had to be some sort of wine rating system.). We tasted 6 different ones. The front of the tasting sheet was a list of fruity wines that were as my friend said: "like juice." It's a matter of preference though. The very first one on the list was a blood orange Muscat. I do not like overly sweet wines, but Muscat has a nice floral element. Lewis Station's was perfumy with only a subtle hint of blood orange. I knew it would go nicely with an appetizer like prosciutto-wrapped melon. It would likely complement any charcuterie board with salty meats with fruits like apricots and figs. The other wines were far too fruity for me. However, on the opposite side, they did offer a "winning" chardonnay that was surprisingly good. AND, it was oaked. I'm not an oaky chard fan, but this one won me over. The other nice offering was their Zinfandel. I ended up purchasing the Muscat and Zin. For the customer that is new to wine-tasting and with less of an idea of what to do with their bottle purchase, Lewis Station could offer pairing suggestions on their tasting menu or even offer samplings of local cheeses and meats to try with the wines. They do host a Wednesday tapas night (apparently starting this week) that supplies catered AYCE tapas from the weekly farmer's market and 2 glasses of wine for $20. Now, that is something that should draw in the masses. I am considering making the hour drive from Wauwatosa to see what it's all about. School night or not! For those that were not fans earlier this year, try out a tapas night and see if you have been converted in to one. read more

Having visited the winery on a few occasions over the years, I have been consistently dismayed by the discourteous service at Lewis Station Winery. Several employees have been abrasive in their interactions with patrons. For example, today I arrived with others to enjoy some wine on the patio. We brought with us some pizza from the Art Fest across the street. We were literally scolded by one of the employees, who coldly demanded we put the pizza away because they could be held liable if we got sick. While we understood the business's stance and cooperated, we were shocked at how poorly the message was communicated. It should not be asking too much to expect a smile and pleasant tone when visiting under all circumstances. To be frank, it is not as though the quality of the wine (which, at best, is acceptable) should afford such bad customer service. If you are looking for quality wine coupled with a warm, inviting experience, look elsewhere. read more
