Brought my son's car to Lew's because we were told they work on older vehicles. Strong running engine, had work done, just didn't pass smog. After dropping the car off, we heard nothing from the shop for almost three weeks. Finally my husband got a hold of him and is told, he's waiting for a part. Ok...would've been nice to have spoken with you first to find out what needed to be done. Weeks go by, maybe it's coming from China by paddle boat. More weeks go by, maybe it's coming from the moon. Finally we said let's just pick up the car and replace the valve ourselves. We go to pick up the car and they can't bring it out the yard because the ignition is now broken.?? No choice but to ask him to replace it so we can get it out of there. Weeks later, no repair. He says I thought you were going to bring me the spare key... We filed a complaint with the CALIFORNIA BUREAU OF AUTOMOTIVE REPAIR. And finally today, we had our car TOWED home. Save yourself the aggravation from this man's business. I brought it in good running condition to him because I was referred by the guy at jiffy lube,, told me that he worked on older cars, so I did,,, biggest mistake of my life, he kept my car for 3 months, I tried to get it back but couldn't get it started, he claimed he didn't do anything to it, I had to get it towed to my house, he didn't offer to pay for the tow, and there were things missing from my car. I have gone to Lew since moving to Vallejo in 2001. He has never disapointed me. He has never over charged me. He remembers details about my vehicles he has serviced for me (Dodge RAM, RAM 2500, RAM 3500, Xterra, Civic, Camry, Ford Excursion (3 of them), etc...) He does it all. He sometimes takes a while as he tries to optimize oil changes (quick jobs) vs. replacing the front end on one of my Excursions (hard job). You can't find a more honest shop to work on your vehicles. Well, everyone smiles when they take your money and today Lew showed his TRUE COLORS I KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MOTOR OIL AND TRANSMISSION FLUID. It was obvious he did not want to "fix " the transmission gasket I had paid him for. He said it was an oil leak not the transmission gasket I had to call to see what was going on and my vehicle which was just sitting there all day while I waited for him to call and had the nerve to charge me $20.00 cash and no receipt! the check engine light on my truck came on while I was driving it, so I took it to this shop to have them check where the problem was. it was the catalytic converter fault . they ordered the converters and waited for at least couple of weeks for the replacement to come in since it's coming from the maker of the vehicle. It was installed and very satisfied for their professional job. I'll be going back to this shop if I get problem with my vehicle. The people there were friendly and highly recommend this shop . RATS ATE THEIR WAY INTO MY TRUNK!! DISGUSTING!!! First starters, my family (multiple members) has been bringing our business to this shop for YEARS spending thousands of dollars on our cars. Over a month ago I dropped my car off at Lew's break shop to see if he could fix my engine or possible replace it. Lew was more than happy to check my car out and shop around for engines as well. Mind you, after my car was checked out and it was decided I needed a new engine, Lew did not ask me to tow my car home while he searches. And my car was there for weeks while he searched. Once he decided there was nothing he could do, and taking to many mechanics, he said I need a new car. So a week or so ago I called AAA to come to Lew's shop to pick up my car. I came down early to detail my car because I had an appointment to get my car appraised. I opened up my trunk and I was shocked to see that there was a good size HOLE with SHREDDED insulation and RAT CRAP EVERYWHERE!!! Yes, RATS DUG THEIR WAY IN FROM UNDERNEATH MY CAR AND INTO MY TRUNK WHILE MY CAR WAS ON LEWS PROPERTY AND IN HIS CARE!! My heart sank, I couldn't believe this was happening! I went into Lew's shop to ask him to come see what I found. I was very nice and polite. This was the first time I have seen inside the shop. And WOW is it disgusting!!! There is crap piled everywhere! You can't even get a car into the shop bc it's filled with junk and old cars. The dust is so THICK everywhere. He came out and I showed him what happened. Lew stated "Oh...wow...yeah.... I don't know how that happened...". He then said, " well the most I can do for you is clean this up for ya." So I said yes that would be really great actually while I finish cleaning the inside bc the tow truck should be here any minute. So after he OFFERED TO CLEAN IT UP and I agreed, he says "Oh, so I am the cleaner now?". Like what???? I said " Sir this happened on your property while you had possession of my car. I'm about to have my car appraised and this could significantly lower the value of my car!" And Lew says, " Not to mention I let you keep your car here for free." SERIOUSLY?!?!? It didn't have to be there!! I would have gladly brought it home while he was actively searching for new engines! He had the nerve to smile in my face as I was clearly upset. So I told him forget it and that I didn't want anything from him. And he walked away. No sorry, no NOTHING!!! It's no wonder this happen especially with the condition that the shop is in. After inspecting the property from the road it's pretty clear that all the cars are kept in the back out in the open in or next to a field. We will NEVER come here again! And I highly caution anyone who decides to bring their car here because this could absolutely happen to anyone's car and it's clear that Lyd does not care and would not do anything about it! read more

A tire store had changed my tire and cross threaded the lug nut. I called 4-5 business in Vallejo and the prices ranged from $165 to $300+-$400+. My landlord referred me to Lew's. They have been in the business at the same location for over 70 years. Lew grew up learning from his father. He gave me a quote which was less than $100 and did the repair in about 2 hours. Bringing your car to the shop is never fun. Lew did an amazing job making the whole experience pleasant though, and I'll happily bring my car back here next time it needs service. I bought a used car recently, and from the beginning it was pulling hard to one side. I decided the other day To bring it into big o to get it aligned. It was a big 'o' mistake. They informed me that one of the inner tie rods was bent, and that they could not do the alignment without first fixing the part. $600 fix. I searched for 2 weeks for a shop that would do the repair for under $500. Finally, I found Lew's. Lew called with the best quote I had heard. When I brought the car in, he greeted me with a warm smile, and a couple of jokes. Really cool guy. He took a look at the job, and told me that it would probably take about an hour, and that he'd charge me based on time. It took him about an hour to complete, and he charged me $80. Beats the hell out of $500! They really turned a stressful situation into something I could deal with. I'm really impressed by their service. ** be warned!! Back Passenger window was vandalized. Tried to replace it with a used replacement and got stuck after removing door panel. Took car to Lew's and asked if he could repair it. He answered "Yes" and when I went to pick up the car, the replaced window would go up, then back down a few inches. Was told then they did not have the equipment to troubleshoot an electrical issue. I found a web site that explained that when replacing a window you needed to reset the window travel limit which they failed to do. Gave me another date and when I went he asked if I thought they were supposed to do this for free? Yes, they were supposed to have put it in so it worked. "You disconnected the motor!" I was told. It would cost another $120. I declined and left the shop, never to return. I am waiting for tomorrow to file a complaint with the CA Bureau of Automotive Repair. read more

Was very worried: my brakes were making a horrid scraping noise. Had visions of needing the rotor replaced. Turns out all I needed was new front brake pads, which were at ZERO percent. Like.... "no longer existing." That horrible scraping sound was the brakes grinding against the rotor (which did NOT need to be replaced). WHEW! Feel like I dodged a bullet. And thank you, Lew, for being so honest: he could have told me I needed a new rotor and I easily would have believed him. There ARE honest car mechanics out there! I don't think Lew is crooked or unfair in pricing but the service was a huge letdown. I called one week explaining in great detail what I needed done and was told that it was a bad week because they had a mechanic out. No problem, the vehicle isn't a daily driver so I can bring it in next week as long as it's ready for the following week, the one week a year I need to use the vehicle. I brought it in 8:00am Tuesday morning with a detailed list. Called back Wednesday afternoon and they hadn't even looked at it. I call back day 3 and now it's up on the lift but that's all the information the owner can give me. I call back on Friday, day 4, and they are able to confirm what I suspected the vehicle would need but they aren't able to do any of the work because they need parts. If parts are a problem they should have looked at my list on Tuesday to at least line up the parts, even if they couldn't perform the work that day. This is really unacceptable because I know for a fact that NAPA and other parts distributors will bring parts to a garage on very short notice. That's why they have those small trucks on the road all the time delivering parts. That's how they compete for business: quick parts delivery. This was a total lie to cover up poor scheduling on their part. The vehicle was ready for pickup on Friday afternoon, 4 days after I dropped it off, with only half my list completed, and in particular the items not completed were the primary reasons I brought it there and discussed those items on the phone in detail with the owner the week before. If you aren't concerned when your vehicle would be completed, then I would consider Lew's but personally I wouldn't go back and wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. If you're falling that far behind on your work load, stop telling people to bring their vehicles in, or offer your mechanics overtime to get the time commitments met. Sometimes we all have to work a little extra to get the job done. All of us except the folks at Lew's that is. read more

Had no trouble scheduling a day to have my car towed to their shop and they got it back to me in what I considered quick. Dropped off Tuesday and got it back Friday the same week. The issue was a bad starter. Law was apologizing for how long it took to get back to me because they had a lot of cars at the time but for me the wait was no trouble at all. I wish I could give zero stars. We have been going back-and-forth with the owner of the shop for the past two weeks to work on a 2014 Volkswagen Jetta. It had a list of issues such as the heater doesn't work, light was out, needed new windshield wipers, and a couple fuses were out. The owner, which I believe is Lew, was NOT reliable and did NOT communicate anything towards us letting us know what he could and could not fix. We simply picked it up this morning and nothing was done besides a light being changed and new windshield wipers. I probably could've gone to Pep Boys for that. Not even to mention that he charged us almost $1000 to simply take out a radiator. He only refunded us $90. A complete scam, unorganized, do NOT go here you will lose your money. The cherry on top is that when we got there to pick it up this morning he LOST my car fob. He dug around for a few minutes until he could find it but he had also claimed that I never left him a car fob. That isn't true, I left him my key AND my car fob. The whole process was unprofessional but losing your clients key is probably one of the worst things I've seen in a mechanic I would NEVER recommend this spot, I can't even believe it has good reviews. He fixed absolutely nothing and I wish I could be a Karen and go off on him to his face, but I'm trying to be a little nicer than that. He first of all is a gem of a man, really nice, honest, and very approachable, a real pleasure to do business with. The prices are reasonable & fair. After pricing around, you'll find Lew is the best, and it's not a matter of 'you get what you pay for', the service is always good, and your car is left clean, no oil, icky handprints or dirty mats.
