I originally inquired about another dog at this rescue that I found via Petfinder. I had very specific needs in a pet, and the rescue head felt the dog I asked about would not be a good fit. After a bit of emailing she recommended a different dog in her care. She put me in contact with the dog's foster. The foster and I chatted via phone and text for a bit about the dog. As I am in Ventura County, I sent a video of my home and yard. We arranged to meet at a park in Santa Monica. My family and I drove down, met the dog and visited for about an hour. We decided to adopt and went to the rescue head's home for paperwork and to pay the fee. I say all that because some people might not understand the process of adopting from a rescue. As for the dog: it was a wonderful match! She was initially not happy to be leaving the foster she knew for two months, but within a few days we figured out our routine. There were a few potty accidents along the way, but that's to be expected. My vet gave her a clean bill of health! I've had her five weeks now, and she has pretty much come out of her shell and shown us the amazing lady she is. Great small dog rescue. read more

Our entire adoption experience was a breeze--from the time we applied online (their website is so informative, easy to navigate, application was easy to fill out) to the adoption event where we met our future fur baby (in Santa Monica, street parking and after the meet and greet, we walked across the street for some yummy brunch at a cafe), through the next few weeks of waiting because she had to be quarantined in case of kennel cough & she had some tummy issues from spending time in the shelter (in which Randee, the founder, was the sweetest and updated us on how she's doing the entire time ) and to the day that we finally got to take her home--Randee made the entire process so enjoyable and stress-free! We haven't had a dog in a decade and she answered all our silly questions and gave us helpful advice in a neatly arranged adoption packet! I can't express enough the dedication and kindness RANDY has for these dogs. I lost 2 of my pets to cancer within two years of each other. They were my fur babies. I am leaving this review because if it hadn't been for Randee and this group, I never would have met my soulmate Tedi. I used to run a dog rescue many years ago, and I see that most of the 1 star reviews are because people feel like Randee's adoption practices are over the top. Maybe they are (just a tad) but when you take in these most neglected and abused dogs, you tend to feel a bit protective. I know this from experience. I volunteered with her at one point, and our philosophies on some things were different, but this woman CARES DEEPLY for what she does- and let me tell you, it's a heartbreaking deal to run a dog rescue. We see a lot you don't even want to hear about. Frankly, I'm surprised she's still at it because the burn out rate is high. But she's still plugging away and I'm glad! Anyhow, I fostered Tedi before I adopted her, she was my third foster- I wanted to find a good home for her but my darling girl had some issues. Randee let me help decide who a good fit would be and I decided to go ahead and adopt her myself. She blossomed into the most wonderful dog EVER and I loved her feisty personality. I loved her more than anything and recently lost her due to heart failure. She was 12, and we had 10 amazing years together. How fast time flies. If you want to rescue a dog from this place, it's worth the extra bit of time. Randee puts her crazy little heart into this organization- I say that with affection (all of us dog ppl are a little nuts!). We do not have enough words to express our gratitude and appreciation for Randee, Leah, and all the wonderful volunteers at the Lhasa Happy Homes (LHH) rescue organization! We were looking for another dog companion for our beloved dog Oscar (3-year-old Shih Tzu mix) who we rescued from a local shelter. He is very sweet and affectionate, but also very passive, anxious, and shy. Oscar yearns to play with another dog, but he is very picky on who he wants to play with. We lost his older sister (a Maltese mix whom Oscar adored) earlier this year unexpectedly and we were devastated. When it was the right time, we started researching rescue organizations instead of shelters because it was our top priority to find the right fit for Oscar and where he would be able to interact with the dog. We found LHH online and was immediately drawn to their story, mission, and how thoughtful and thorough they described each of their available dog's profiles. We are also biased to Shih Tzu/Maltese/small dogs and love that LHH specializes in these breeds. At one of the LHH adoption events in Santa Monica, we met Randee and Leah who we introduced to Oscar and they listened to what type of dog we wanted for him (similar in age and size, playful, confident, and not dominant). They recommended Archer and allowed us to let the dogs interact/play in the dog park behind the event. Unfortunately, Oscar was very shy with everything going on and did not interact much with Archer. However, Oscar allowed Archer to sit next to him for us to take pictures so we took that as a good sign. We asked Randee and Leah if we could have a second visit in a quieter/less public setting to see if Oscar would feel more comfortable and then see how he does with Archer. Leah arranged for us to have them meet at Urban Dog (wonderful Dog day care/boarding facility) where Archer was staying. During this second visit, we got to know Archer further and saw his happy-go-lucky and confident personality that we knew would be a good balance for Oscar. Oscar showed us a few more signs that Archer is right for him, including sharing a tennis ball with Archer. We decided to move forward with the adoption process for Archer and we were approved to adopt him. Once we brought Archer home (we renamed him to Archie), within 5 minutes, Oscar started playing with Archie and they have been inseparable ever since! Archie and Oscar are the best of friends and Archie perfectly complements Oscar and brings Oscar out of his shell. We also noticed right away how well-behaved Archie is, from almost potty trained to walking well on a leash and listening to basic commands (sit, wait, and come). This is a true testament to how well the LHH team takes care of their rescue dogs, and absolutely prepares them for their best life in their future furever home! Archie is the perfect fit for our household and we love him very much! And it's also truly amazing how we have become part of the LHH family and we love to share updates on Archie and Oscar with Randee and Leah, and then see our photos posted (along with all the other LHH grads) on Instagram! I've read some of these negative reviews from people who did not "get" the dog they were interested in, and I think it's important to address that. Lhasa Happy Homes is not a pet store, they're a dog rescue. Some of their dogs have had really difficult lives, and Randee's number one priority is finding the right home for every dog. If a dog has experienced years of neglect and has severe separation anxiety and you're planning on leaving them alone for 12 hours a day, that's not a good fit. If a dog has a history of biting and you have a wild 2 year old, that also might not be a good fit. If a dog needs a lot of exercise and you plan on letting them out 3 times a day to go to the bathroom and that's it, also not the right fit. It doesn't matter how much you want that exact dog, Veruca. It's about finding the right fit, and Randee will be honest with you. I have fostered with LHH and also adopted my dog Kenzo from them. In addition to filling out in-depth questionnaires about the dogs you are fostering, Randee asks many questions to really understand the type of needs the dog may have. She works with her trusted fosters on reviewing applications from families to make sure every dog finds the right home. They are doing everything they can to make sure dogs are not "returned," since that can be incredibly traumatic for a dog. Wow where do I begin? I recently lost my sweet Lhasa Apso Simon after 12 years. When I was ready, I knew I wanted to rescue again and I knew I loved Lhasa Apso's or a similar size/demeanor. Then I stumble upon Lhasa Happy Homes. I put in an application for a dog that had been adopted just days before I submitted. They rescue adorable small dogs. They're a small operation and they do their due diligence before a pup to be rescued. I visited the adoption event this past Sunday and got to meet the team. They sell dog toys and collect donations to help pay for the dogs medical expenses, get them groomed, buy them food, etc. I see that two people left really nasty reviews, we were there at the event the same day and my experience was completely opposite! All the dog toys were properly labeled with the applicable price. The organizer was very sweet and was trying to help multiple people that had inquiries regarding the pups. She was courteous and was helping as much as she could. Again, they're a small rescue and they're just doing what they can. Don't let the weird reviews discourage you from checking them out. If you're able to, I would recommend buying toys or donating since that's the rescue main source of funds. We bought the dog a toy from their toy basket as a gift and venmoed the $5 that was written on the back of the tag. Later, my boyfriend received a barrage of accusatory, rude messages saying the toy was $10, and that he should be ashamed. Wtf? I was the one that took the tag off the toy because the dog kept trying to eat it, held onto the tag the entire time, and reminded my boyfriend to pay before we left. The application is overly personal and invasive, but I followed through due to my sincere desire to meet and possibly adopt an adorable Lhasa named, Howie. Randee promptly responded to my application via e-mail indicating that Howie might not be a good fit for my home for two reasons: First, I have cats and since Howie chases squirrels, she was concerned he would have a similar reaction to my cats. Second, Randee stated that Howie was such a kind dog, she wanted to place him with a family that had children who were older. I indicated in the application that I don't have children. Had I known there was a specific family type sought for Howie, I would have never spent more than an hour completing the application and revealing private information about myself (e.g., health conditions). It's actually pretty outrageous to elicit such revelations from folks just expressing an initial interest in a dog. After reading Randee's e-mail, I asked what type of dog she thought would be suitable for an adult-only home. An honest question considering her comments. That was nine days ago. She hasn't replied to my e-mail. This used to be one of the rescue sites I regularly checked since I'm an experienced Lhasa owner. Never again. read more

Like many potential eager-to-adopt people in LA, I have researched dozens of foster groups when looking to find the right dog. However, when a friend texted that she came across a tent in Santa Monica with adorable terrier / mix dogs (aka LHASA), I knew I needed to take my digital search in-person and go see the available dogs in person. Immediately we were met with very diligent and thoughtful volunteers in purple - the LHASA Happy Homes team truly is there with the dogs' best intention at heart, and are very thorough with the dogs' history, behavior and their recommendations for the best type of home. We had called in love with Caitey, and after applying and staying in contact with Randee and the team, were given approval to take her home. Now named Missy, she has become an integral part of our lives in just a couple weeks. We are so grateful to the LHASA team for their dedication to saving dogs from terrible conditions and giving them a new lease on life. Caitey for example has been malnousirhsed and covered with fleas when they rescued her, and she was cared for over a month by their team of fosters before we adopted her. Our friends and family cannot believe Missy (previously Caitey) is a rescue, because of how well-mannered she is. We are so grateful for the gracious care of our now fur baby!! read more

I would like to share how special, Lhasa Happy Homes is to me and my friend Tobey. Tobey came to the shelter due to a confiscation of many little dogs living on the streets. He was scared and pretty much shut down. I had worked with him to earn his trust but his progress was quite sad. The lights were simply not on in his eyes. He needed a rescue to take him in and show him the way. After reaching out to Randee and explaining his history, she knew she could help him become the dog he really was inside. She took him into her home, so that she could work one on one with him. He was in excellent hands and shortly after arriving the light in his eyes appeared!! She sent updates and videos of his progress which brought me so much joy. I volunteer for a County Animal Shelter and sadly many are overlooked. This little dog touched my heart and with many Thanks to THIS rescue not only was Tobey's heart saved but so was mine. This Christmas both Tobey and I received the greatest gift of all, as rescue found him a wonderful family and he was home for the howlidays. If I could rate more then 5 stars, I would! This is long overdue, but my partner and I ended up not being a fit for the dog we put an application in for, Taffy. While we were sad, we also understood that we were not the best home for Taffy and that she would be better suited in another household. We love fostering for Lhasa Happy Homes. Randee is easy to work with and she provides us with everything we need! Randee is straight to the point with no hidden agenda!!! We currently are fostering Onyx and Zuri (which are bonded sisters) and Sully who came from Baldwin Shelter with a broken jaw. Randee is meticulous about who fosters for her(rightfully so). I don't know how I was so lucky to find Randee at Lhasa Happy Homes but to say that she's a superhero is an understatement. We had a crisis situation with my mom having to move into an Assisted Living that didn't accept dogs and Randee stepped in like the angel she is to save the day.
