"Bodhi" and "Kirra" at my home one day after "Bodhi" was adopted :)
    Kumiko S.

I think the Bill Foundation is great. It is run professionally and efficiently. Their goal is to place animals in the most stable and well-matched environment for the pet. This isn't a county shelter, you can't just walk in, pay a fee and go home with a dog on the same day. They look at the potential adopters' lifestyle, energy level, stability, and pet ownership history. This way they determine which applicant is best suited to adopt an animal. If you take a moment to think about it, they don't want the animals to go to people they don't feel confident with. Bill Foundation volunteers probably spend weeks and months rehabilitating sick, injured and abandoned animals. It takes a LOT of work to get these animals well enough for adoption! Of course they're going to be picky about who adopts them. I've only adopted pets from city and county shelters, so adopting through a rescue is very different. I think saving animals directly from the shelter is wonderful! But it's more of a risk because the shelter staff can't tell you much about the animal's medical and behavioral history. Rescues know the animals much better. My boyfriend and I were interested in one of Bill Foundation's dogs, so we filled out the monster application (it's like applying for college!). We didn't really expect much, but I heard back from Michele in just 3 days. We went to the Healthy Spot to meet the doggy and meet his wonderful foster mom. Just a few days and a home check later, they approved us to adopt "Bodhi"! I was really surprised. We're just a youngish couple living in an apartment in Culver City. I thought for sure they'd pick some fancy older people with a huge house in Beverly Hills over us! I wouldn't blame them if they did, the dog should go to whomever is able to provide the best life for a pet. As for the dog himself, he's a great dog. He is nice to people and other dogs. He's a pomeranian, and we've never had a small dog. Only goldens, huskies and malamutes. So we are learning about the weird quirks of having a little dog. Like being careful to not step on or squish them! We're still working on basic commands, and training him not to jump on people or bark at them. He's extremely affectionate, which I love! He sits in my lap and cuddles in bed. He is also getting along well with my senior husky (she is so patient with him, such a perfect dog). The best thing is that "Bodhi" is a young and healthy dog, just needs a good teeth cleaning. I'm happy that we'll have him for many years! Thanks Bill Foundation! (And special thanks to "Bodhi"'s foster mom, you rock :))

Bentley my gift from the Bill Foundation.

I love this rescue and think they are impeccable. I adopted two dogs from them and they couldn't have been , more caring or more thorough.

My second experience was terrible. After my puppy was killed while with me on leash by a reckless driver, I later returned to L&L to look for a new baby. Different set of employees, and both my nephew and I were shocked that one of them seemed to blame me for my puppy being killed. He was rude, insensitive to the circumstance, and he did all he could to throw up roadblocks to helping me. He was an expressionless jerk who had zero empathy or professionalism. I contacted the manager about this, and though she three times promised to call me back, she never did. This is heartless behavior for a place that is supposed to be doing good. I will never go back to that place again. The only reason this is not a 1-star review is because my first experience with them was good. That appears to have been an anomaly. I adopted a pup from Best Friends West LA, which I cannot recommend enough.

A few years ago, a friend of mine adopted a dog from here - a beautiful tripod chihuahua mix. She was happy with the adoption process and loves her little princess. I was having dinner next door and stopped in to check the store out. As expected, the place is meticulously perfect and the décor is bougie with lots of cute plush dog toys & merch. Off to the side is a section where the fur babies that are up for adoption reside in posh play pens with white picket fences. There is also a nice area on the rooftop where potential adopters can spend quality time with their future fur baby. The staff here are very friendly, and I got to meet one of the pups named Meatball as he was on his way out for a walk. We've had him since he was a puppy - his mom was rescued by Lange and was pregnant. Last week, we adopted 3 year old Tobey (black terrier). The application process was completely easy. The staff reached out right away for a meet and greet. They were super accommodating when I wanted to come in a day early. They answered all the questions we had regarding Tobey and let us know of any treatments he's currently in. After the meet and greet, we knew that we wanted to bring Tobey home. Sure enough, we came back the next day with Tobey. Bruno and Tobey are still getting used to each other, but I'd say that Tobey feels right at home. If we were to adopt another dog, this is the first place we'll go to.

We went and met Nes and Duke along with the trainer OJ. My wife and I were able to control and walk Duke with no problem. But they wouldn't allow me to adopt him because they say that my back yard has no shade, and that the gate is not secure enough. Actually the back yard has shade for about 1/2 the day once the sun if to the east, but the home inspector came by at 10:00 AM, so not much shade then. However, Duke would primarily be an indoor dog, and less than a block away is a park with all the grass and shade a dog could want. The back yard would be only for a potty area, and leg stretching area between walks. I have had my son in laws 3 Husky dogs back there and not once have they opened the gate, or broken through it, and they outweigh duke by about 2 to 1. Was I given a chance to address their concerns? Nope. That is why I am giving them 2 stars. If they have concerns, Let me address them, or at least call me and ask me about them, and then they can decide if we would be a suitable dog parents or not. Personally, I don't think that they took to my wife and me, and were looking for any reason not to let us adopt duke. (this is only my belief, and I have no proof one way or another.) And one more thing that I wasn't a fan of. The training. The trainer wants complete obedience from the dog. He thought that I was giving Duke too much affection for not doing anything. Who does that? If you love your dog, you give him affection for no other reason than he is a dog, and you want to make him feel loved. We don't just parcel out affection for only the times they do a behavior that we want from them. Overall, I am soured on rescues in general, and I will be only looking at animal shelters from this point forward. Good luck to anyone adopting from this rescue, but be prepared that they will say no without giving you a chance to explain or fix any issues.
