Was wandering around town and spotted this chocolate shop. They seemed pretty specific to New York and wanted to give them a try. The counter staff was extremely friendly. Li-lac has many locations sprinkled around the city, but I enjoy this west village location the most. It's a really nice storefront with a great selection of chocolates and seasonal candies. Call me prejudiced, but I have always assumed that they are more about the looks and design than the actual taste of chocolate... hence although I've been admiring their chocolaty art every single time I walk by any of their stores across the city, I haven't tried the chocolate... until now! Samples couple of their fresh made chocolate items. Overall everything was too sweet for me. Legendary fudge chocolate walnut: This is my favorite. It's very fudgy, decadent, the walnuts added interesting texture. This one surprisingly is the lesser sweet of all the items I tried. P.B. & J. Bar Dark: I just can't resist PB&J in any form! This one is good, thick PB layer (kinda fluffy) on top of a thinner layer of jelly. Love the mix of different textures from PB, J and the chocolate shell. However everything was too sweet for me. Raspberry Jelly Bar Dark: like the combo of jelly and crunchy chocolate shell texture. But the raspberry jelly is way too sweet. Mousse roll dark: enjoyed the texture of fluffy mousse inside covered in crunchy chocolate shell and adored with fun chocolate sprinkles. Unfortunately again way too sweet. We heard about Li-Lac from a Business Insider clip. When you walk in you're still greeted with the smell of chocolate even though their products are made in Brooklyn now. Like others have mentioned it is a bit pricey so we opted to try a number of be spoke chocolates in the case. However, there are affordable items like the chocolate bunnies on a stick. Impressively their sugar free peanut butter cup did not taste overtly of chemicals which is a hard feat so a great option for diabetics. Staff was friendly and helpful. read more

We LOVE the Greenwich Ave. location Patricia is a neghborhood gem! She remembers customers by names (and were only in there every 2 months or so). The chocolate is always fresh and rich not over sweet like American chocolate or Jacque Torres has a tendency to be. The employees at the Chelsea market are different. I bought candy for a V-day gift. The chocolates were OK but the price could only be called astronomical. Why does a chocolate covered caramel the size of a Werther's caramel cost $1.45 each? Actually Giradelli, Godiva and Lindt are just as good at a fraction of the cost. A small heart shaped box with dozen pieces can run around $45. C'mon, your candy is not all that. Best hot chocolate in the city. What differentiates it is that they take actual chocolate shavings and melt them into milk. It is not a powdered Greenie hot cocoa but a true hot chocolate. Their chocolate selection is wonderful and they have the best red licorice I have ever had in my life. This is the only location that does the hot chocolate. Have adored the 8th and Jane location in multiple visits over the years, so am sad to see that quaint spot vacated......but the new location sells the same fine chocolates. I'd compare Li-Lac to See's in California in terms of style and quality--- I prefer it to many European brands. But Li-Lac also makes finely molded seasonal and novelty items, so the shop is especially charming at Easter, Christmas, or Halloween.
