One of the many great things about New York is that in spite of all the corporate establishments there still are boutique mom and pop shops around that give it a unique authentic flavor. Myzel's Chocolates is a cute little confectionery in midtown west with an assortment of different delicious chocolates. I've been to Myzel's s a few times after doing some research. I've gotten chocolate covered matzo and chocolate peanut butter cups. Both were fresh and excellent. The place has a small family owned business vibe to it. read more

Really small candy shop that you might miss if you're not looking for it. They have a surprisingly large selection of licorice if you're into that. I got 3 pieces of delicious chocolate. The cherry cordial was my favorite, but all are worth repeating. Kinda pricey, but it's a specialty shop in NY, after all. read more

Stumbled upon this place while walking in NYC. It is s small place packed with chocolate, licorice and gifts. Really appreciated that the vegan licorice is clearly marked vegan for those of use that are. The staff was super helpful when i was looking for vegan easter items and chocolate. We went in because I saw a raving review on IG, saying how sweet and wonderful the owner was., The owner was not friendly at all, acted as though she didn't want to be bothered when I said I had learned about her shop on Instagram. She had a young girl working there that was very nice. We bought some very good,but very expensive licorice. We probably would not go back though. read more

If you have a sweet tooth, this is certainly the place for you. Homemade chocolates, cookies, and more than 100 types of licorice from around the world. It's a small store filled to the brim! The owner immigrated here and opened this store in 1990 and she is still here, Amazing and inspiring story. Staff was very friendly. Lots of selections but not sure of the quality of the ingredients used. I got a dark and a milk chocolate orange cream and there was definitely artificial coloring. The chocolate did not look or taste to be high quality but are priced as such. I can find no ingredient or cocoa source list anywhere which is concerning. My friend loved it and thought all was great, but I was not so impressed. read more

This place is disgusting, I went there the other day and saw mice. On top of that, the older woman who worked there didn't even seem fazed by it. You also can't walk into this place without seeing the older woman screaming at the employees which is wildly unprofessional. Maybe this is not a problem for most people but I personally hate being in places where the employees are being treated like animals. Definitely don't recommend this place. read more

A friend recommended we stop in here before a show for a treat and I am so happy we did. This shop is a true gem. The variety of chocolates borders on overwhelming. Sure it's pricey but you get a pretty decent product. I tried 4 different kinds and all were stellar. The beau went for the nonpareils and seemed to like them very much. It can be a bit hectic in the small space but the young women behind the counter seem to know what they are doing. I can't wait to return for more. read more

A nostalgic chocolate shop, or more so, licorice shop with licorice from around the world. this place is really nice and its a small shop that has been around a long time. i got 2 milk chocolate pretzels, 6 milk chocolate peanut butter cups, and 1 chocolate covered gram cracker. everything was delicious! but i must say they do weigh it and it was pricey at 19.00! i was a little baffled but i didn't want to put anything back. just beware. read more

I wanted to like this place. I mean, I love chocolates, and my husband loves licorice, so really you'd think it'd be the ideal shop for us to pick out treats that pleased us both. The choices of both, particularly licorice, were a little overwhelming, but my husband still found a few different types of candy he wanted to try. But damn, the woman behind the counter was just wildly unfriendly and unhelpful. I decided to skip the chocolates, after she rolled her eyes when helping my husband. Listen, I don't mind that the place is shabby. I don't even care that it looks like, in some cases, stuff has been in the jars for... a while. It's part of the whole ambiance -- I get it. But what shouldn't be shabby then is the service, and it sure felt like it was. (Husband reports the licorice were good, so maybe I'm just being fussy myself.) read more

We stayed at the Blakely, right next door. I went in 3 times. Cute place, great chocolates and licorice. BUT this experience was truly a 3, but I know they are struggling so I'll give them 4 stars. Not one of those girls, including the owner, had much of a personality. I felt rushed and like they didn't want to answer any questions. Just pick what you want as quickly as you can and leave. While it's a very small shop, their attitudes are unbecoming. If I weren't such a fatty I wouldn't have gone back. Perhaps you could treat the humans spending money in your store a little nicer. Especially since it's those people who will keep the doors open and the lights on. It's a shame such a sweet shop has such sourpusses running it. read more

This is one of the last of the old specialty stores n NYC. It is a very special store with the best homemade chocolates and candies. Amazing favors that you cannot find in commercial candy. This small location has big flavors and gifts that will have lasts ng impressions. Can never forget their homemade cookies, warm as if right out of the oven Now that I moved out of NYC, I still call in to get an order of their chocolate malt balls or Easter candy. They truly have the best candy in the world and a destination stop when you visit NYC. read more

I came here after seeing them in the NY Post. As with every other candy store in the city they have a huge wall of chocolates, pralines etc. Prices are pretty steep and I think I would go elsewhere next time to satisfy my sugar cravings. read more

I am in this neighborhood once in a while and the store was empty so I went in, but I did not feel welcome and after hearing the prices, I just left. If your store is empty, it would be better to welcome customers as if you actually want customers. read more

Been coming here for years to bring my mom the marzipan chocolate which is hard to find! Delicious, fresh, home made, local and a hole in the wall magical little spot. Bring cash if you'd just like to sample since it's $15 minimum for card + there's a service fee. (Still worth it for me, I add on almond clusters to meet the minimum). read more

Tiny little shop that is loaded from top to bottom with a huge range of sweets. The counter and everything else feels like an old timey store but in the best classic kind of way. The lady behind the counter was friendly and helpful. She let us sample. I had a piece of sour licorice that was quite good. They have a HUGE selection of licorice. They had a bunch of flavors and styles I had never seen before. We picked up several boxes of truffles for friends and family back home. I would have liked it even more if they had more white chocolate options, but that is just me being a little picky. I would definitely recommend it. read more

If you love licorice, you will love this place. They have like 200 kinds of licorice from all over the world. Be careful not to eat too much though or you will be sitting on the toilet a lot. I didn't know that licorice caused this type of symptom when you eat too much. The licorice is so delicious, it's very hard to stop eating it. read more

An old-time old-world candy shop. Stopped by on Valentine's Day for some sweets. Prices were NY-high but the truffles we got were delish. Way too many licorice treats to pick out and they didn't offer any suggestions making things a little more challenging. Ultimately, the ones I got were a little too bitter for our tastes. This shop in Midtown is amazing - and it's open now. There is so much high-quality black licorice from all over the world. Strong, mild, sweet, salty, fruity, on and on. I have been coming to Myzel's for years and have enjoyed every type licorice from here. If you are unsure of what to get, ask Kamila to make you a mix. There is also a large case of chocolates, truffles, ice cream, and homemade cookies. Displays with holiday and seasonal themed baskets and gift bags change often, so stopping in multiple times a year to see the displays is also fun! I'm going to begin with a brief tangent for those of you unfamiliar with Neapolitan Ice Cream. Supposedly it has its origins in the cuisine of the Italian city Naples and the Neapolitan immigrants who brought spumoni to the U.S. Spumoni is an Italian dessert that uses three different flavored (vanilla, cherry, and pistachio) layers of ice cream that resemble the Italian flag. Americans would put their own spin on it by replacing the cherry with strawberry and the pistachio with chocolate. Moving back to the NWC truffles, the outer shell is comprised of a smooth and creamy white chocolate infused with strawberry, while the equally smooth core is a melty milk chocolate and white chocolate truffle. Although Neapolitan is not a favorite ice cream of mine (fruity ice cream is not my thing), Lindt absolutely nails it with all three flavors clearly coming through. I am a devotee of dark chocolate, and have tried every dark offering it has. Each is superb, even flavor combinations I haven't historically adored (like orange and chocolate - I know it's popular, but it's just not my favorite). That said, my personal favorite is the Anastasia, a hazelnut and dark praline enrobed in dark chocolate. It is exquisite. Service is always excellent. I've ordered in person and over the phone, and have always been so pleased with the staff. The website is helpful when ordering a variety, but if you'd like an entire box of Anastasia, for example, you have to call the Rockefeller Center store and place the order by phone. They ship once a week, and I always have my box fairly quickly. Boxes make terrific gifts ... including for yourself. If you're walking in, I recommend sitting down to enjoy a few pieces of chocolate, then taking the rest in a box with you. There is a cozy but comfortable seating area in the back just for this. This area is also an ideal place to enjoy some of their drinking chocolate. Highly, highly recommend.
