What a charming, thriving chocolate shop! It's been around 30 years or so, and although it shows inside, the deliciousness did not fade. The workers inside were nice and almost just as sweet as the sweets. The price is $46/lb for a la carte items, bagged of candy can be found all around the small store, and you can't help but exiting the place without spending $50 or so. Cute shop, nice owners, but pricey and really nothing special. They seem to rest pretty heavily on their laurels as a chocolate that appeared on Sex and the City. The chocolate itself is probably on par with Ghirardelli - and it wouldn't surprise me if Ghirardelli 60% is actually what they use for their creations. You can taste the quality of chocolate and I especially love the dark chocolate. Food crawl stop #10 Ordered 1 milk and 1 dark chocolate covered pretzel. My husband is, apparently, the ultimate judge when it comes to chocolate covered pretzels. He's tried them all. And when he's cranky pants bc of work, or fantasy sports problems, or bad poker playing luck, his wifey know's what's best: chocolate covered pretzels will make it better. I was excited to bring him here. 2 small pretzels for $3.50. YOWCH. As I handed over 4 dollar bills and received 2 quarters and 2 small pretzels back, I thought, damn these must be awesome! My first bite of the dark chocolate, it was 99% chocolate and 1% pretzel. And the percentage of chocolate went down with each bite, but it never went below 85%. That's a pretty lousy percentage. You want to taste the crunchy pretzel and salt against the bittersweetness of the chocolate. But there was just way too much chocolate. Yes the chocolate itself was delish. But it was a major fail. And the worst part was, it caused a reverse cranky pants reaction on my husband. He was happy before he ate his cranky-pants-inducing choc covered pretzel. Major fail, major fail. Great little store you might not notice in the West 4th area unless you were looking for it. I'm sure we've passed it tons of times but hadn't gone in until Friday. The first word that comes to mind with this place is "yum!" That's what the chocolates are. They are also quite filling and made this chocoholic happy as a late Valentine's Day gift. Lest you are skeptical about my chocolate tastes, I did work at Godiva & had my fair share of Belgian chocolate while working there (per Godiva store rules at the time) along with a fair amount of Lindt and Ghiradelli over the years. The owner of this store goes above & beyond for customers. First off, he said that if I was running late & though I would arrive after the normal time he's there on Friday evenings to just give him a call & he would wait for us (my husband was getting off work in a transit dead zone area of Queens so transit concerns were a potential issue). Second, he even wrapped the box for free for us after hearing it was a late Valentine's Day gift for me from my loving husband. Good variety of chocolates & they even tell you on their website what they have so you can think about what you want ahead of time! Prices are about what you'd expect for Manhattan (on the pricey side) but this is definitely quality merchandise that is freshly made. The sea salt dark chocolate caramel that the owner recommended was awesome, providing that great mix of sweet and salty when you bit into it. I'm most definitely going to return here. read more
