    Liarsville song and storytelling.
    Debra V.

Our visit to Liarsville was our favorite excursion. Despite May's cool weather the crowd was welcoming. Six actors sang and danced telling about Liarsville, an 1898 mining town. Reporters would stay here and never leave, but write news stories with no facts. The stories were lies! We panned for gold, had hot cider and cookies, and looked at the replicated bar, simple buildings and tents. Then, we had the best salmon bake ever!! The lunch was fresh, grilled, and outstanding. It even included blueberry cake for dessert. Be sure to sign up.

There were a few little tents to help set the stage for what Liarsville was like in the 1890's

The show was entertaining and informative. Campy and fun. The facilities were a little on the rough side, but felt quite authentic. Panning for gold was fun, and the salmon bake was quite good. Good entertainment and food. A good value and experience. We recommend Liarsville!

I nearly forgot to review Liarsville, an included Salmon Bake stop for our White Pass & Yukon Route Railway excursion just outside of Skagway. Our stop here started with a bang, a very warm welcome from Charlie Whitehorse and several of the other "townsfolk". Liarsville, said to be a true historic town for journalists reporting on the "news" of the Gold Rush. More like embellishing accounts from the Klondike. And after our welcome as we stepped off of our bus, a self guided tour around the grounds of several tents filled with artifacts. Or listening to the musicians giving their renditions of period folk songs. But parents with youngsters here for the salmon bake, a word of caution. Do not, I repeat, do not let your pre -teens attend the featured show. That is unless you don't mind them hearing or viewing conversation and antics that get a bit raw. Strictly for adults in my opinion. And of the one man, two women performers the women get considerably more graphic than Mr. Whitehorse. Fortunately this forgettable performance was over after about 30 minutes, and it was time to chow down! But if you had eaten at the salmon bake buffet back in Juneau, as we did after whale watching, the exact same meal; salmon with or without a brown sugar glaze, baked beans with reindeer sausage, chicken, coleslaw, mac & cheese, etc. I would imagine there is a monopoly of one for salmon bakes, at least in the southeastern portion of the state. 2.5 stars, I guess that's why my review for Liarsville was overlooked and nearly forgotten.

Had no clue what to expect. They had a comedy show about the history of Liarsville. Then we panned for gold. Then the salmon bake. Food was really good; that was my favorite part. Had no time to even check out the gift shop though. Seemed to be a constant stream of groups. I would've rather had a real history of the place instead of the comedy style. But interesting experience nonetheless.

For a re-created scene at a Gold Rush Camp, the Liarsville experience was quite successful. There were three parts to the afternoon. The first included a wonderful salmon bake, which included a buffet of seasoned chicken, rice pilaf, caesar salad, baked beans, pasta salad, corn bread, and blueberry cake. The star of the show however was on the grill, Alaskan salmon. The salmon was freshly prepared and served with a brown butter glaze. It was really delicious. The second part of the afternoon included fun entertainment focused on explaining the history of the camp. That was followed by an opportunity to pan for gold. While this is clearly a lucrative opportunity for the town aimed at tourists, it was actually well done. I thoroughly enjoyed the salmon.

Where to begin....Trying to start off positive, I can say the atmosphere is that of a cute little mining town with a cute gift shop. Salmon was overcooked unfortunately, no outdoor heaters while you eat outside and the "entertainment" was that of "prostitutes" who, let's just say If you have children you wouldn't want them to hear their dirty jokes. Parts of their show were okay but overall Gold panning = a pan they hand you with a few flakes that you will need to find. Save your money, and go eat in town at Skagway or take the train ride.

There was a bit of a wait, but we grabbed a beer and relaxed while waiting for tables to clear. Our waiter was super friendly and attentive, and I really appreciated the decor throughout the restaurant. As a gal originally from Cape Cod, I especially loved the nautical theme! Of course, I ordered the fish and chips, and it came out hot, fresh, and delicious. The batter was a little crispier than I'm used to, but I still thoroughly enjoyed the flaky, white fish. The guys in our group enjoyed their meals as well. The ladies' room was clean, which is always appreciated. Overall, I highly recommend this spot if you don't mind a bit of a wait. For us, it was absolutely worth it. I also want to mention that we were visiting on a cruise ship, and this restaurant was a very convenient walk to and from the port. If you're in town for the day, it's an easy and worthwhile stop!

So many great options. And let me tell you about the Gandolfini Grinder -- this sandwich is an absolute unit. Flavorful, stacked, and generous in size. It did not disappoint! Whether you're a cruise passenger making a quick stop or spending more time in this historic little gem of a town, Skagway Brewing Company delivers on all fronts -- great food, great drinks, and great vibes. Our…read moreexcursion guide had recommended another restaurant, but the food here looked much more appealing and the reviews were stronger. It also appeared to be a newer restaurant, which caught my attention. After dropping my things off at the cruise ship, I walked from the Broadway Dock to the corner of 4th and State Street. The walk took about 10 minutes and was very easy as it was mostly a straight shot past shops and other businesses. The restaurant is located next to a food truck that I had also seen reviews for. I wasn't entirely sure if they were affiliated, but they're right next to each other. The restaurant itself is in a small house-style building where you order at the counter. There is an enclosed seating area with curtains and heaters, as well as an outdoor patio with picnic-table seating. It was a beautiful day, so the heaters weren't really needed, but it was nice to have the option. I ordered the smoked salmon dip and the halibut sandwich. The salmon dip was decent, but not my favorite. It had a nice smoky flavor, but it was a little dry for my taste. The day before, I had salmon dip during our glacier excursion that was much creamier, almost like a salmon salad with a hint of Old Bay seasoning, served with Ritz crackers. That version set a high bar. Here, the dip was served with cracker-style chips, which I didn't enjoy quite as much, and the texture wasn't as creamy as I prefer. The halibut sandwich, however, was excellent. The fish was fresh, lightly breaded with panko, and fried perfectly. It was served on fresh French bread that held up well without becoming soggy. The sandwich included a vinegar-based slaw with fresh cabbage, oregano, and tartar sauce, all of which complemented the fish beautifully. The halibut was mild and flavorful. I wasn't even sure I liked halibut before this meal, but I suspect I've never had it this fresh. It completely changed my opinion. My only criticism is the portion size. The piece of halibut was fairly small, and at around $27, it felt a bit pricey. That said, seafood is expensive, and being right off a cruise port, I wasn't expecting bargain pricing. The quality was definitely there. The fries were also very good...crispy, well-seasoned, and a great side to the sandwich. Overall, I left satisfied, though not overly full. The food was fresh, the atmosphere was comfortable, and the location was convenient for cruise passengers. I would absolutely recommend this spot and would seek it out again if I return on another Alaska cruise.
