My bike hasn't been fixed in years. I went to Master Bike Shop because it was the closest to where I lived. My bike needed a good tune up and my bike looked sad. I had this bike for almost 30 years "Cannondalle Super V500" year 1998. I love my bike and the people in this shop were so kind to me and understood my concerns. They explained to me everything that needed to be done to fix my bike. When I returned to pick up my bike, I was taken back on how it looked. It looked brand new, I almost started crying. The mechanic did an amazing job. I couldn't believe how it looked. I can't tell you how happy I am. My bike looks like it came out the store new. I highly recommend this bike shop. read more

Went into this place blind as I was looking for something close to my neighborhood and this fit that bill. Unfortunately, the experience was just utterly disappointing. I imagine if you're bringing your regular bike or mountain bike there it would be fine, but I was bringing my Brompton fold-up bike there for the first time and they completely dropped the ball. First, I only went for a cleaning but Imbert talked me into getting a new chain. It was a bit old to be fair, but when I went to pick it up a few days later, the chain was WAY to long and would uncouple from the sprocket upon folding. I brought this up and to their credit, they shortened the chain and it seemed fine...for a minute. Then I went to ride it and the chain would skip upon ANY pressure, so I went back. They explained that it needed new sprockets and they didn't carry them so I'd have to go Brompton Junction. Why this was not explained and owned up to from the jump was my first point of contention. I was also upset because I had wanted to just keep the old chain but they talked me into a new one and had thrown the old away and that meant by bike was made unrideable by their actions and that's thing two. The other thing was that they ruined the paint job with whatever high pressure hose they were looking to clean it with (see picture). All that for $174 and that is ridiculous. I did get a refund for the chain at $32, But to not just own up to it right away, apologize, and OFFER A FULL REFUND is quite frankly just not good enough. There are are too many other, better bike shops out there and I'll get to that later. I love my Bromptons and I was pissed. Luckily, I paid with my Am Ex card and I will definitely be getting my refund back in full through them in due course. If your looking to get your Bromptons serviced, save yourself the incompetence and lack of outgoing service and just head down to Brompton Junction over on Bleeker Street. Better Yet, hit up David at BFold as he the absolute Best! You can find him at 224 East 13th Street. I haven't done any repairs here, but I've stopped in a couple times for random parts when working on my bike. Sometimes it takes a second to explain exactly what you need, but they'll look for it. Last time, they hooked me up with some ferrules and crimp ends after unsuccessfully trying to buy some at the "big brand" store down the street. Most Manhattan bike shops exist to service one of these three: delivery guys' e-bikes; people who don't know how to change a tube on their kid's bike; 6'2" 140 lb. guys who shave their legs and spend more on their bikes than some people do on their cars. When you're an "enthusiast" who does your own work, it's REAL hard to find a shop that will let you buy random parts. You're kinda stuck ordering stuff online and waiting. It's nice that there is an option for this kind of stuff in the neighborhood. read more

Flew into New York City, staying on the upper west side this bike shop was a short walk from my hotel. I was able to rent a Trek road bike for three whole days - meaning I was able to take it back to the hotel and get some early morning rides in. Staff is friendly and helpful. Buyer beware! The (disc) brakes on my 6-month old e-bike were loose and I wanted a slight adjustment. I was riding by this shop and decided to have the mechanic check them out; he spent a minute (maybe two) doing the adjustment: $20!!! My mistake - I should've asked what he would charge before doing anything. Either their cost for service is overpriced OR he took advantage of my not asking. Either way I won't go back. The good news is the brakes seem OK. Extra info: I had gone to Toga and a person there took a look and said I needed new brake pads (that pads on e-bike get extra wear and need to be replaced more often) but i'd have to come back the next day for them do the work. I brought our Babyzen Yoyo stroller here to get the wheels serviced, the ball bearings were rusted onto the axles on a front and a rear wheel. They turned it around in 2 hours with the front wheel replaced and the rear axle removed (they had to saw it off to get it out) and now I can replace the part easily myself. Incredibly happy with the outcome and they couldn't be nicer. Price was very reasonable and I highly recommend them for any stroller wheel needs! read more

I ordered and pre-paid for a bike here during the pandemic. It turns out they were actually out of stock even though the item was listed in stock. I wasn't pleased at first but they did everything they could to get me into a comparable bike and make the situation better. Manuel & Imbert were both fantastic! Imbert even fixed my boyfriends chain on his bike which had gotten messed up when we rode over. I definitely recommend this place. Imbert is the original owner. He's been in the business of selling and fixing bikes for a long long time. He started at Gotham Bikes before opening his own place.. I used to go to the old (now ancient) location when it would be him alone, He is a master mechanic. There was something monastic about his devotion to his craft. There was a time when I was riding more than doing anything else. I'd often go for a small fix or tweak in the am. I'd greet him when he arrived for the day and would even help him bring the rental bikes outside before he told me to stop because I did it clumsily and risked scratching up the inventory. He's more of a boss now, I gather. Over the years things change but Imbert is an UWS OG. I'd suggest asking for him and talking to him about any concerns. Fairly new in town, my Campy gear shifting failed in while doing laps in C.P. on a Sunday. I figured there was no way I'd find a mechanic on a Sunday who could a) work on Campy, b) fix my problem. Lo and behold--Imbert to the rescue! He's truly a "master bike" mechanic and incredibly nice. He assessed the damage and declared it totaled (I've actually had my shifters rebuilt x4 over past 30 years which is why I like Campy (rebuild instead of replace). I was to meet someone to continue to ride and Imbert was kind enough to loan me a nice carbon bike (no charge) for the better part of a week until my parts came in and job completed. The charge was no higher than what I've paid in past in S.C. and my old bike shop never had loaner bike! I've been back a few times and feel so fortunate he's a 5-minute walk from my UWS apartment. The location is perfect for a rental--just a short ride to Riverside Park so no real biking on city streets. The price and ease of the whole process are also fantastic. My ONLY complaints are. a) a lock doesn't come with the purchase, it's extra. You'd think they'd want to protect their bikes. and b) the seats have NO cushion. I mean none. I have to cut my ride short simply because my butt is killing me. This is crazy for a ride that isn't the least bit bumpy. Definitely would recommend this place: inexpensive and thorough. If you're bringing your bike in for a tune-up, it might take a couple days because this shop is busy! I came in to get my bike tuned up (from Craigslist.. who knows where its been). Since it was my bike is my main mode of transportation, I asked if I could get it back sooner than Wednesday (typical wait: 3-4 days). And he said he'd try to aim for Monday, Monday came around and the bike wasn't done yet, but he let me borrow one of his rental bikes so I could still get places! Yay! My bike ended up being finished on Wednesday because it needed a bit more work than initially expected (cables replaced etc.) but good quality overall. Tried to rent bikes here. They have a price of $20 for 4 hours. We got there at 3:30pm and the shop closed at 6pm on Saturday. The price is still $20. There's no flexibility even though we would only have the bikes for 2.5 hours. The person at the counter just rudely pointed to the poster and said $20. This was not a welcoming place. The deck of my SwiftyONE Marine needed to realigned after I accidentally knocked it over. Even though the "magician" (Juan Carlos) had never seen a SwiftyONE Marine before, he worked magic and now I can carry it securely and one-handed in stores and up and down stairs when it's folded again. Yay! Thank you, Thank you, Juan Carlos!! He also expertly installed my mudguards. The manager, Imbert, saw that I hadn't installed my handlebars correctly, so Juan Carlos fixed them too--all at a discounted price. I should add that they did all this on Christmas Eve and I hadn't made an appointment. All three gentlemen in this store are generous, gracious and professional. I walked into Imberto's shop for the first time about 5 years ago. I needed a reliable repair shop that I could trust re-assembling my Felt TT bike. I took a chance with him because he sold similar bikes. My relationship with Imberto has gone beyond business - he's my GOTO guy. He treats his customers like family. He and his team are knowledgeable and reliable, and I'm always happy with the job they do. But that's what you should expect from a reputable bike shop, and I've seen that at other shops in my time. What makes him stand out from all other shops from my experience, and what really earned my loyalty and respect for him was that he treats business like family. There's always going to be times where things don't go according to plan-- and he always has the ability to make a profit, but time and time again, he refuses to make a profit at other people's expense. I've seen customers running into problems on the road and he's always finding a solution, even if it's out of his own pocket. He's completely genuine about the whole experience as well. He works around customers' schedule and is flexible in a chaotic city of New York. He's also always giving me advice on upgrades, even if it means discouraging me to buy things at times. Shop is not for the blue collar, but if you don't mind over-paying for good work that is on point, then this is a good bike shop. Ember the owner knows what he is doing from the products to up-selling. I was quoted $25 by an employee for a 30 min repair but had to fly out to LA so was unable to until I got back. Saw Ember upon return and he said $50 for the same work. When I attempted to protest, he said "Don't worry about what the other guy said. I am the guy. I know what I am talking about." I took my bike and went down to Martin at Liberty Cycles at Columbus Circle. He is an excellent tech and caters more towards the blue collared person. read more

I was having trouble with the front derailleur on my old Peugeot U-08. The cage would move it too far, and the chain would come off. Master Bike adjusted it -- no charge. Then the trouble returned with the cage moving it too far the other way. I needed a new front derailleur. The bike is old - not easy to get parts for, not easy to work on. It was going to cost $100, parts and labor. When I came to pick up the bike they told me that for some reason I couldn't quite understand, it would be only $80. Better yet, Imber had adjusted the derailleur, and felt like a new bike -- as though a ten-pound weight had been removed from the crank. And now, they know my bike. The bike fitting was comprehensive and any future tune-ups are on the house. Both turned out to be immense investments. As I was introduced to road cycling, they polished my biking skills by providing tips including positioning, using clips, training on a stationary machine.. and more... I have to personally thank Imbert, the owner, and his nephew, Jay for showing my nephew how to ride bike. They went out of their way in front of the shop for a few hours at a time until he faced the intimidating task of riding on two wheels. All of this was an incredible gesture of goodwill for which I'm eternally grateful. The shop also has a solid variety of bikes and accessories for decent prices. Best prices I'd say. Cheaper than Amazon. If they don't have it, they may accommodate you by ordering it. This is my new go-to bike shop for repairs. I live in between Master Bike and Toga bike shops. For whatever reason, I used to bring my bike to Toga for repairs. Toga did a good job, but their prices are just too high and getting in & out just takes too long. I've started using Master Bike on 72nd St for repairs and parts and found them to be cheaper & easier to work with. Repairs are at least 25% cheaper than Toga, they're fast, friendly, and get you in and out fast. read more

I had a great experience purchasing bike shoes for my spin class here. The salesman was very helpful, and they had many types of shoes, sizes, and styles. They even gave me a ~20% discount on the shoes due to business being low in the winter time. I would highly recommend coming here. I used to live around the corner fro This bike shop and would get my bike serviced all the time there. I took for granted how professional and at the same time very low key and down to earth they are. Then I moved further up town and went to a new bike shop across the street from my new apartment. What a difference! Some bike shops are snooty, rude, impatient and a pain in the neck to deal with. I'm just a regular gal with a nice bike which needs air and tune ups now and then. In this particular case, I ran over a nail on the street and my tire went flat. The folks at master bike fixed my tire in no time flat at an extremely low price. Master Bike treats everyone equally-the pro/am speed bikers in their fancy cycling getup, the average Joe and his 6 year old son, messenger service professionals, and little old ladies like me. It is worth traveling the extra 15 blocks to get to Master Bike than suffering the indignity of the insolent service regularly filed out by my nearby bike shop. SHADY AS FUCK! I needed a new gear shifter, which the mechanic told me would cost $35. He got the part from behind the front counter and, in Spanish, said to the owner (or perhaps just the manager, I'm not sure), "This is $25, right?" and the owner replied in Spanish that it was, so the mechanic said to me in English, "Yeah, it'll be $35." Then the owner said to him in English, "No no no, $45," which put a puzzled look on the mechanic's face, and upon noticing me giving him a look as well, he expanded, "You know, because the labor." Of course I expect to pay for labor, but $20 in labor for ten minutes of work on a $25 part is exorbitant, so I asked, "The labor is $20?".....and this is where things get shitty....HE FLAT OUT LIES TO ME!...."No, the labor is only $10." I'm white, so clearly he thought I couldn't speak Spanish, but my grandfather was from Spain and I understand the language just fine, so I said to him, "You just told him that the part costs veinticinco (25), so if labor is $10, it should be $35, not $45." At this point he knew he was busted, so he just kind of looked sheepish and said he'd only charge me $40, which was still a $5 over-charge. I'm kind of annoyed with myself for not walking out right then and there, but I was at my sister's apartment next door to the shop, and didn't feel like riding to a different shop stuck in first gear. It really is a shame, because I've been in the shop a few times and the guys have always been friendly, but a smiling face doesn't excuse someone taking advantage of you just because they think they can. I will not be returning to this store, and you shouldn't come here either. Instead, go down to Continuum Cycles (on 13th St. between Ave. A & B) if you want friendly, knowledgeable service from people who won't try to cheat you. Their impeccable Yelp reviews will illustrate that they're in the business because they love cycling, and that they're heads and shoulders above the very disappointing sort experience I had here at Master Bike Shop today. read more
