I was thinking 2 stars, but after re-reading my review went up one. wow, I wish yelp had half stars. So....... In for dinner for 4 monday evening @ 6:30. Walking up the to restaurant there are four big gruff looking men smoking cigarettes. Now, I have found that guys that look like this are usually some of the nicest guys around and the first to help out someone in need, but blocking the restaurant door? when we entered to the left was a small bar with a few more guys drinking. to the right a small dining area. we were seated promptly upstairs in the dining room. our waitress was quick polite and professional. (all good things). I ordered "yesterdays chili" (that what is says on the menu) with onions and cheese. it was good. albeit microwaved, but hey it's yesterdays chili. also tried the clam chowder, which was also good. Entrees consisted of: steak tips. which came out cooked as ordered with a baked potato and some assorted veggies. the meat was very very chewy. almost dangerous, but tasted ok. (I would not get this again). Chicken parm, pasta was cooked correctly but not drained well, so my dish while looking great turned into a soupy mess. next was 2 pizzas both were fine. there are better choices for pizza but these "bar pizzas" were fine. everything was very reasonably priced. @ 10 for the chicken parm, the pizzas were 7. I forget the price of the steak tips. I will go back but only for pizza. I had such high hopes for this old school restaurant. read more

I'm very surprised that this place is rated so low. I was at the Liberty Grille yesterday and I thought it was great. I had a simple lunch, tuna and Swiss on marble rye with a side of butternut squash. It was excellent. The bartender made me a PERFECT Cosmopolitan (only a splash of juice, otherwise it is a Cape Codder). The service was laid back but completely professional. There were a lot of locals in the bar, and they were extremely friendly to an unfamiliar face. I enjoyed it and I will definitely stop by again the next time I am in Hingham Harbor. read more

I wanted to like this place as I really like to give places a chance (we were from out of town and didn't want to do the touristy Wahlburgers thing in Hingham) but it left a bad taste in my mouth. The food was decent and reasonably priced, the decor was sort of cottagey, and the waitress not particularity attentive (she forgot a few items we had ordered) but still it was an ok place for a meal. What turned me off was this: I had my 14 month old son with me, and for a baby he was pretty neat, only dropping a few small pieces of pasta on the floor. The waitress said to me as we were leaving "Can you clean that up? We just cleaned the carpets". I was a bit dumbfounded since even though it's not a big deal for me to do it, I have never once been asked in a restaurant to pick up food under the table. Normally that's a busboy or waitress. I asked the waitress if she had a broom I could use and she said no! I thought the request was unreasonable and was put off by it. It's not like my sons little noodles are going to cause them to have to run out and clean the carpets, someone is going to spill something more problematic sooner than later, and if it's such a big deal, don't have carpet in a restaurant. read more

Ordered the eggplant parm and could only eat one bite...it was horrible. The waitress was so rude-made us feel rushed and then didn't bother to check on us. When she saw that I hadn't touched my food she asked if it bad and I said yes, very. She came out with the check and she didn't even take it off the bill. When we asked her to she seemed really annoyed. My friends got fish and neither cared for their food but were able to at least eat some of it. I heard the pizza is good, but I probably won't go back after my experience there. read more

I went there the other evening with my daughter and we both thought the place was just awful.. Right from the start we should have just walked out. The waitress was the worst ever, the place itself is just so dated and needs a complete overall, that also goes for the very "dated" waitress I felt like saying to her that if she didn't want to there doing her job just leave.. First problem and red flag was regarding the bread rolls (i asked 3 times if we could have some) heated up out of the microwave.. yikes who does that ..When our food finally can we took a few bites and left.. Lets put it this way I didn't trust eating it at all ... Will never go into the place.. and would never ever recommend to absolutely any body.. I have been to the Liberty Grill many times in the past. Today I went with my Granddaughter and my Great Granddaughter and to say I was disappointed is an understatement. I had a Caesar salad with grilled chicken. It was about 1:30 pm. The Caesar salad looked and tasted like it was made about 11 am for the lunch crowd. The chicken unfortunately tasted like a dirty grill. My granddaughter had a chicken cordon blue sandwich. When I mentioned my chicken to her, she said hers tasted funny also, and agreed it was probably a dirty grill. The baby had a grilled cheese sandwich and is too young to critique her food. Had always enjoyed it, but won't be back. The waitress left a lot to be desired and the cook spent most of his time watching the TV in the dining room. Nice historic building. Too bad it is not being utilized to its potential. read more

The service was AWFUL! We had a bigger party with 5 adults and 4 children; however the kids go out to eat often and were no hassle at all. Our waitress was Sarah, she either hated kids, bigger parties, her job, the world??? Not one smile, not even to the kids or newborn at the table. She was so impatient while we were ordering our food that we felt rushed and uncomfortable. I asked if they had hard cider while ordering drinks, she simply said no- didn't say what they had or if they had anything similar. I ordered water and she still didn't tell me any other drinks! If you don't offer a drink menu then don't give attitude when questions are asked!!! One child at the table had a shellfish allergy and when I ordered for her and mentioned it she stated "she's getting a burger, there's no shellfish in that". The kids politely asked for more drinks and she ignored them, they ended up asking another waitress who helped bus the table because they were scared of our waitress. Sarah needs to get another job!!! The food was ok, we just ordered some pizza and a couple of us ordered the fried plates. The fried plates were extremely greasy and not flavorful- the pizzas were typical bar pizzas. None of us will be returning, due to Sarah and her awful service. Doesn't take much to smile and if it does then she should look for another job! read more

Had a horrible experience dining here. Ordered our meals (both of us ordered scallops) and waited over 30 minutes with only 2 other customers in the restarant. Then the waitress came up to us to tell us that making scrod fresh took awhile......we informed her we had both ordered scallops. So after a 30 minute wait we now find out the wrong order was placed for us. The waitress insisted we had order scrod and we told her no we did not. This was an older waitress and we found her to be quite rude about what was her mistake. She went to the kitchen to talk to who knows who..........came back and rudely told us that we could eat the fish that was being cooked for us or if we really wanted they would cook scallops for us. My friend told her she did not like fish so she really wanted the scallops. Again she was rudely told "well scallops are fish!". We were horrified. So now we waited another 20 minutes ..............the waitress finally decided to offer us rolls since we had now been 50 minutes with nothing to eat. No one else, manager or owner, ever came to speak to us even though they looked over at us while talking to the waitress. I know we should have walked out but that is just not my style. Although I wish we had. The scallops finally arrived. They had a fishy taste and were horrible. The cole slaw had no dressing............just plain shredded cabbage on a piece of lettuce. The only edible part of the meal was mashed potatoes. Between the rude service and untimely cooking...........I probably should not have even left a tip. But I figured if this older waitress still had to work instead of enjoying retirement, then she needed the money more than I did. But I will certainly never return to this restaurant. read more

This place is terrible. They used to have decent bar pizza, but we got so much waitress attitude tonight that we walked out without ordering anything. It took about 30 seconds. They accused my friend of being too drunk to order a beer because she tripped on their poorly maintained building on the way in. We were sober. Also waited 3 minutes for the hostess when we got there even though the place was literally empty. Hostess was snarky on the way out. I am just going to put this as kindly as I know how...DON'T DO IT honestly we had to send back 3 times the cups of coffee we ordered because the cups we very dirty with lipstick stains and not to mention the silverware we had to bring to their attention being dirty with food. Came here for some dessert and a few appetizers. The desserts came out first- but I was ok with that- and they were so good! The appetizers that came out were great as well. The only problem was the service! It was awful. Our waitress sat at a table across the tiny room from us and had pizza and a large glass of water about table say with super hot wings and empty water glasses. I had asked when ordering for ranch with our wings which they didn't have- they had a parmesan herb something or another so we asked for that. It didn't come out with our food but the blue cheese that we didn't ask for did. After watching our waitress enjoy her meal with another texting waitress we finally saw her again and asked for the Parmesan stuff. She said- "oh so you wanted that?" Uhh. Yeah? And we asked for water. Which she didn't get and she went back to her pizza and her texting co worker. After another table asked for her we and she went to the back we asked the texting waitress for some water so we could finish our meal and leave- instead of just pouring us water- she yelled for the other waitress (our original) to do it. So we continued to wait. The only time we got water during our meal was as the check was being delivered. The food was great- the service was not. I'm giving it two stars based on food alone. It now shows why the other places around had 30 min- 1 hour waits and this place sat us right away.. Otherwise- I probably won't be back which is a shame. read more

Old place, definitely a townie bar, but it serves some of the best bar pizza I've ever had!

(UPDATE) Our latest visit was om Aug 26th 2012. We were taken care of by Liz who had a charming personality and gave us great service. The young hostesses are always nice as well. The food was as usual affordable and very good. (END OF UPDATE) We like the pizza here very much it is very tasty especially when warm. These are bar sized pizzas and have a lighter consistency than other places as the cheese is not excessively applied. A cheese pizza is $6.00 and a good variety of draft beers are available. This is a very old and historic building dating from the 1700,s and you can see the beams and wood work common in the construction of those days. Yes there is an older waitress there who acts more as a functionary and does not go out of her way to be friendly however we have always found her to be attentive to our needs. We recommend this establishment for affordable great tasting bar pizza in a colonial pub atmosphere. read more

Horrible pizza. Ordered a plain and a mushroom and picked them up and drove home 7 miles. Opened the bags and had half pepperoni half plain and one anchiove which went right into the trash. Hingham has an abundance of upscale restaurants, and sometimes you just want a beer and a piece of pizza...I've passed by the Liberty Grill on numerous occasions and had never ventured inside until this past weekend, when the Snug was super busy, and we had our baby with us, so we sought out a more appropriate venue. The staff was super accommodating to us and our stroller. We ordered a buffalo chicken pizza, and the scallops...I was a little hesitant to order scallops at a place like this, but they were surprisingly decent. The pizza was great! Just enough spicy, with a side of bleu cheese. The restaurant itself is totally outdated, but there's something about it that's cozy. read more

If you want mediocre food, ridiculously slow service, then go here, you'll love the place! A group of 4 adults and two kids, after about a 40 minutes wait, OK here's 3 of the ordered items, wait another 7 minutes, OK, here's two more, wait another 5-7 minutes (for a bowl of chili??) and guess what, when that last lonely bowl of chili arrived, it was cold. This place might be good for Hingham townies lookin to hang out at the 6 seat bar, but unless you want bad service and mediocre food, go somwhere else. We stumbled across the Liberty Grille by accident after a day of driving up and down the New England Coast. It's an unassuming and very old building with a small bar and about six tables downstairs, and a few upstairs. Our waitress was friendly and as we were the only customers at first, very attentive. I ordered the BBQ Steak Tips and Fried Shrimp and the Lady had the Lobster Ravioli. The ravioli was tasty, large (4 to an order) and served with a well balanced sherry sauce that didn't over power the dish. The Steak tips were well marinated, tender and quite tasty. The shrimp were flash fried and good. I felt like the Butter Nut squash was a stand out, perfectly cooked and delicious. The Lady agreed and ordered herself a side to enjoy. All in all, The Liberty Grille is a solid little tavern that serves solid food at a decent price. Oh, the have Bass and Goose Island IPA on tap so, WIN! If you're looking to pay for food poisoning this is the place. For a restaurant on the ocean its mind blowing that they serve everything frozen. The pizza comes on cardboard lets be serious!? The bar is minuscule and stuffed with inappropriate "townies". The staff is ridiculously rude including the manager. This is the worst place I can ever imagine eating in. After being seated at a table, the hostess came over to state we needed to move because the waitress didn't want to wait on a 2 top. Can you believe it? A waitress who does not want tips. First of all, I can't believe the hostess would say that, but as the owner explained she is a hardworking 17 year old girl. Needless to say she may be hardworking, but she is going to cost him more business than she is worth. When we said we didn't want to move, that we liked the view, she just looked at us and when we said we were leaving she said, "so what". Not sure of the waitresses name, but if you ever go in and get sat a 4 top, look out. As for the person who wrote a review regarding the "patrons" being rude or stuffy, you need to have your head examined. I have read some of the other reviews and the 5 star from Nathaniel is a joke. Perhaps a more adequate description of the bar should be 4 feet long, with 5 stools. Not exactly "quaint". I will never return to the Liberty Grill. I will never recommend it and they have lost a valuable customer in the fact that they don't know how to treat people. read more

I just left the Liberty Grill within the hour and if it wasn't for a decent chowder, I would have gone for no stars. I was greeted at the front door as if I was an intruder by a younger lady who apparently had more important business on her I-phone or Blackberry. She seated me at a table looking over the outside dumpsters and the "wait-station". (There was plenty of availability. Only two other tables were then occupied. ) She never asked if I preferred or offered upstairs seating although a number of folks after me did go up. I had clam chowder and Nantucket scallops. My waitress asked if I wanted mashed potato or rice. I asked for rice. The chowder came relatively promptly and was good. When she brought the scallops, they were swimming in a dish full of a buttery/something liquid of which some she spilled on the table and either didn't notice nor care so I wiped it up for her. My rice came as a baked potato! The scallops were nothing special with some cheese and ritz crackers crumbled on the top. The waitress didn't return until I was finished, never inquired about the untouched rice (excuse me - baked potato). The total bill came to $20 which I paid with a $2 (10%) tip which was generous for this meal and service. I have never written such a negative review but this place, this evening with this service earned it. read more

Went for the first time and won't be back. The three waitresses for the only 3 tables sat behind us on there phones laughing and talking out loud completely ignoring their customers. Each table at different moments had to get up to ask for service. Where is management these waitresses should be fired on the spot they seem to treat the place like a hang out more than a job. Overall the place is cool and could have amazing potential but the service needs to be changed right away. The bartender was the only one who seemed to have his head on his shoulders and look like he knew the 3 young waitress were not doing there job. Let me start by saying that it's a complete joke that the word HOSPITALITY is on the outdoor sign of Liberty Grill. I have been to this place three times simply because it's the only place in Hingham center on a Saturday night that is not crowded. The first two times I went the service was so bad that it was amusing. I recently went for a third and final time and will never be going back. It's not the food that turned me off, it's the people. The owner is a smug guy that stares at you when you walk in and only seems concerned about getting the four drunks sitting at his tiny bar anther bud light. The waitresses are so white trash and stupid they can't even remember your order and give you an attitude because they actually have to work when you come in. Stay away! read more

Horrible Service!!! I have just had the worst dinner that I have had ever. My words to the manager when I left were, "I will never be back here again, and the waitress is not getting a tip". Only once before in my life have I not given a tip, but this dinner REQUIRED me not to give one. It was ANTI-SERVICE. And, I have owned both a Restaurant and a Pub, and this was the worst service I have ever seen anywhere. I waited for my dinner for well over an hour, with nothing to eat in the meantime. No bread even. Then, my dinner was cold. And, to round it all off, they charged me for both of the cups of coffee that I drank. I didn't even know that there was such a restaurant that charged for coffee by the cup, when they make you wait over an hour for your dinner. Lousy place. Horrible service. Ate here for the first and definitely LAST time. The woman who seated us was unfriendly and rude, which we laughed off. My friends and I tried to be friendly and asked "How's your night going?" which was met by a sullen "Fine". Then our waitress was huffy when we ordered, acted as if she'd rather we not be there, but okay, fine. Everyone has bad days. The food was okay, nothing spectacular, but not terrible either. However, the real shining moment came when we asked if (GASP) we could split the check and put it on three credit cards. Not only did we get an attitude when we asked, we were told we'd have to figure out the exact tax (per person) and do the math ourselves. We asked if there was an ATM nearby and she said, "somewhere that way" and vaguely gestured toward the harbor. So she did agree to run the three cards (sorry, just so happened no one had enough cash on them) while glaring at us from behind the cash register. Then after she took forever and a day to charge our cards, she stomped back to the table and told us repeatedly, "YOU CAN'T DO THIS HERE!" and made a big show of saying, "I don't know whose card is whose" and repeating over and over, "GUYS, NEVER AGAIN". In one word... AWFUL. First time, last time. First of all, for a restaurant to be located in a prime spot at Hingham Harbor and have the windows all sealed up on a perfectly beautiful summer evening is just wrong. It was very warm inside so they had this oscillating fan in the corner, right next to me. Open the damn windows and let the fresh air in! As for the food, we were not expecting anything amazing for a pub and we pretty much were looking for some nachos or something. After looking over the sparse menu we ordered a Hawaiian pizza and an order of seafood risotto cakes. Then, we waited...and waited...and waited... For a Thursday night it was not busy at all. 45 MINUTES + later the food showed up. Pizza was ok, but, certainly not worth the wait and certainly no where close to a great pizza. The 3 seafood cakes were mushy with no discernible pieces of seafood. They were each the size of a golf ball (quite small). Really bad. Also, the restroom was very smelly and unclean. All I can say is, I am surprised they are still in business, especially with the respectable competition across the street in three directions (Tosca, Stars, etc).. If the producers of Restaurant Impossible or Hell's Kitchen were to visit here, the Liberty Grill would really be in for a beat down. Plenty of room for improvement. read more
