The interior and the nice people that greet you.

Holy moly! FANTASTIC! This is the DMV? This ruins any joke about the DMV being one of Dante's circles of Hell. One walks in and is greeted by a friendly face who hands you a clipboard, reminds you to fill out the second page. Check in with my reservation bar code was a snap. And the people behind the desk were FRIENDLY! Smiling faces who actually like being there (or faking it really well). Heck, they even let me retake my photo because my smile wasn't that good I'm the first one. I was so impressed I called over the manager to let her know how amazed I was and that I am actually recommending this for anyone that needs to get their license, renew, get an ID card... All the things you can do at the DMV. The kicker my appointment was at 9 o'clock... Please see the photo showing my watch at 9:05 AM because that's when I was done. Can one be in love with a DMV office? I'm thinking of sending them a Valentine's Day card.

I was dreading a visit to the NY DMV to renew my license. I recall the last time I went through this I spent almost 7 hours waiting to get my new license. A quick google maps search and this place came up. I went prepared to be there for a few hours but to my surprise I was out in a half hour! As soon as you walk in, an employee asks what you need help with. I was directed to the clip boards with paperwork to complete. They have pens and you can sit down to complete the form. Next head up to the first window once you fill out the form and you'll get a ticket. Keep an eye out on the electronic board that lists numbers and which booth to report to when it's your turn. They don't seem to consistently announce numbers so be sure to look up at the board. If you miss your number you may need to go up again and get another number. Once at a booth, the process is simple. Hand over your old license and select the option of a real or enhanced license. I got the enhanced and it came to $110.50. They accept credit cards. You may get a new photo or keep the current one you have. The attendant prints out a temporary card for you to review the details. Hang on to this and in 2 weeks they will mail the card to you. Simple, straightforward, and efficient on a weekday afternoon. Plenty of seating, a water fountain, and may have a restroom.

Ask the Community - License Express

How do I make an appointment?

Online but they also have walk in available. For walk in I recommend you go early they open 7:30am so go

Is an appointment required or do they accept walk-ins?

Appointments are required. Visit their website

Can we use temporary license as Identification to fly domestically?

Yes. A temporary license is a valid government issued ID even though it doesn't have your picture

    Fill out paperwork before arrival?

You can, but there was ample time while waiting to complete it. There is also super helpful staff on site to help with questions about the paperwork.

Does license express do eye exams?

The ones required to pass the licensing - yes

Do I have to make an appointment to go to License Express?

It's not required, but it helps. You can just walk in, but it may be busy sometimes.

Do you get your license printed the same day?

You get a temporary license without a photo or anything. You can use it to drive. It will expire in a short time, and by then they should have mailed you your license.

I moved from Virginia to New York and just realized my drivers license has expired. Can I renew and get a NY State Drivers license at license express?

It certainly seems so, as long as your Virginia license expired less than 2 years ago. Bring your expired Virginia license along with the required proofs listed at the NY DMV website at this URL:…

I lost my license where should I go?

I'm pretty sure you can request a new one at dmv.ny.gov ... Otherwise the license express center will get you in and out in no time

Do they do permit testing as well? (motorcycle)

No. Permit testing is done 5 minutes away at the full-service DMV. 366 W 31 St.

Will be providing information and tips on a smooth process when visiting the DMV on 31st Street…read more This is the first time coming here. (I have used License Express numerous times in the past. It was fast and easy. Not able to get appointment there.) 1) Definitely, you need to schedule an appointment. Bring a copy with the reservation barcode or bring it up on your phone. Once you enter the building, three employees- One at a desk by the entrance area and two before you step on the escalator. They will check for your reservation barcode and scan it before you go upstairs. 2) Once you walk into the DMV you are greeted by two DMV staff at a table with forms, who will provide you a ticket. You will bring ticket to the counter when they call your number. (Staff told me to go to counter number 13 which I did I waited until person in front finished and I gave the staff the ticket. The guy goes did they call your number. I said no. Wait for number to be called) DMV staff in the front has to be more organized instead of telling customers to go to a counter share with customers- here's your ticket wait for your number to be called and then go to the counter. It was very chaotic here, people milling around going to counters to ask for assistance. Some customers got a tad testy for they were waiting and have no idea where to go. 3) Make sure you get all the necessary paperwork and documents. There are forms at the table. The staff will ask what service you are here today for. I did not need any paperwork because I was renewing a license and wanted a new photo. Well, the staff at desk did not tell me to fill out a form for getting a new photo. I found this out when I got to the counter. Oh no! No more back to the waiting area. I decided to use my old photo. 4) Look at the TV screen to see if your number has been called. There were ticket numbers being announced. I just could not keep track of announcements. Had relative with me too. So, I got to listen for two different ticket numbers. DMV announcer read the ticket numbers twice and if no one shows up then they read again. There are bunch of numbers being read cause there were so many counters. It's best to look at TV screen like when you at airport looking for flight and at which gate. DMV is also disorganized here too. Numbers being read over and over. People overwhelmed and confused. They search for staff. Everyone runs to staff for help. It got so bad that a staff had to read off numbers and get people in a line to go the various counters for service. Once my ticket was called it was a 5-10 minute process. Just renewing license, no new photo (need a form for this). Yes, had to get vision test. Folks take your time with vision test. Make sure you got your eyeglasses/corrective lenses with you. If you do no pass vision test, you will not get a license to drive. The staff at the counter was very friendly and helpful. My relative on the other hand had to reschedule another appointment because she forgot to bring an item to get her Real ID. Make sure you bring all necessary documents and paperwork that needs to be filled. The next day she went to a DMV closer to home without an appointment and they did not let her in. Someone told her you can walk in without an appointment. So, before going to DMV schedule an appointment, and bring all necessary documents and paperwork.

First things first, make sure you have an appointment (book online in advance) as they DO take walk ins but from what I was told, they only take a few walk ins a day at 1pm and usually it fills up right when they open in the morning. Don't even bother walking in from what I was told by the receptionist. Things you'll need: -appointment -proof of identification (passport or passport card suffices, but if you don't have that then a birth certificate and ID works too; details of what you need will be in the email when you make the appointment) -credit or debit card in the NAME of the applicant, so make sure you either bring a card in your own name or $85 cash -remember your social security number as they'll ask you for the full number Process: I had an appointment at 12:50 and got there early around 12:30. So DO NOT go inside as you can't wait inside (i went inside the first time i walked in and was told to leave since their don't take walk ins anymore for the day, and second time was told to check in and wait outside), you need to check in and they'll let you know when to go in. I checked in via the link below or you can scan the QR code posted on the door and window outside. It'll ask you to enter your name, phone # and appointment time. I received a confirmation that I checked in at 12:30 and at 12:49 received a text to go inside. I showed them my photo id and payment and was told to have a seat. A few minutes later, I was called into a room. I confirmed my personal details, asked for my social security number, scanned my fingerprints and took a picture (make sure to look ok). Then I paid and she explained to me the follow up, the entire process in the room took about 5-10 mins. Super quick and easy. Would recommend as long as you follow the instructions for checking in. Luckily I checked my phone and there were several appointment time slots near the time I came in. I was so happy and fortunate. I quickly locked in my time slot. Anyways, they called out the tickets pretty quickly and I didn't need to wait that long. There were many chairs with a huge width available to sit. I had to register a non driver license state ID for my toddler daughter and the process was seamless and smooth. The only problem I had today was the window employee I was assigned to butchered up my daughter's address by putting the wrong apartment number. Luckily I caught the error and had him fix it. The facilities are very clean and well-kept. The employees are prompt and to the point - the female Latina receptionist is excellent. But, as always, this DMV has a few downsides: They stopped processing licenses and IDs - you have to go all the way down to Bayone or elsewhere for those. Lines often get wickedly long, even at the reception desk. Most employees aren't as nice as the receptionist, but they aren't obnoxious and helpful. You do need to book an appointment for most services, which helps with the wait time. There is no parking lot - only limited street parking and private lots nearby. Finally, during my last visits, I received some conflicting information. When inquiring about handicap plates, one receptionist said I need the handicap plate registration as well as a replacement plate registration. This isn't what the first receptionist told me and doesn't align with anything I found online. Unfortunately the MVC locations closer to me either had no appointments or don't offer the services I need. Booking an appointment through the MVC website is pretty straightforward and you get confirmation right away. Once you get to the MVC you fall in line and check-in. They look your name up on the list and see when your appointment is. So really your appointment is just to allow you to check-in and not really for receiving service. Once they verify your documents they give you a ticket and you wait for your number to be called. It'll also tell you which window to go to. I didn't quite understand how the number system worked because at one time the same number was on the board 3 different times. All that said, the process was pretty efficient and I was out of the MVC within the hour. The employees I encountered were friendly and helpful.

Pros-close to the 2 train, easy for my elderly mother to walk to. Very clean location esp the restrooms, there was even a worker cleaning the bathroom when i was there making sure it stood clean. The staff here is super nice. The nicest I've ever encountered at any dmv location and the main reason i gave it 4 stars. Both ladies working counters 5 & 11 today were so nice to me and my mom and very helpful. She renewed the license for now and told us the price when she fixed everything to upgrade it to the enhanced. She was the sweetest. Cons-long wait Time even with appts, no security walking around the seating areas to ensure safety. There was a crazy guy talking to himself and bullying anyone that stood too close to him for his liking and when he was done he left and pushed a ton of people.
