I signed up online for an appointment for Tsa Pre-check but there wasn't one available until a month later so I decided to do a walk-in!

I had all my forms filled out and documents printed out in advance. After checking in, I was called up in 15 minutes and was out the door in the next 10 minutes. Will be providing information and tips on a smooth process when visiting the DMV on 31st Street…read more This is the first time coming here. (I have used License Express numerous times in the past. It was fast and easy. Not able to get appointment there.) 1) Definitely, you need to schedule an appointment. Bring a copy with the reservation barcode or bring it up on your phone. Once you enter the building, three employees- One at a desk by the entrance area and two before you step on the escalator. They will check for your reservation barcode and scan it before you go upstairs. 2) Once you walk into the DMV you are greeted by two DMV staff at a table with forms, who will provide you a ticket. You will bring ticket to the counter when they call your number. (Staff told me to go to counter number 13 which I did I waited until person in front finished and I gave the staff the ticket. The guy goes did they call your number. I said no. Wait for number to be called) DMV staff in the front has to be more organized instead of telling customers to go to a counter share with customers- here's your ticket wait for your number to be called and then go to the counter. It was very chaotic here, people milling around going to counters to ask for assistance. Some customers got a tad testy for they were waiting and have no idea where to go. 3) Make sure you get all the necessary paperwork and documents. There are forms at the table. The staff will ask what service you are here today for. I did not need any paperwork because I was renewing a license and wanted a new photo. Well, the staff at desk did not tell me to fill out a form for getting a new photo. I found this out when I got to the counter. Oh no! No more back to the waiting area. I decided to use my old photo. 4) Look at the TV screen to see if your number has been called. There were ticket numbers being announced. I just could not keep track of announcements. Had relative with me too. So, I got to listen for two different ticket numbers. DMV announcer read the ticket numbers twice and if no one shows up then they read again. There are bunch of numbers being read cause there were so many counters. It's best to look at TV screen like when you at airport looking for flight and at which gate. DMV is also disorganized here too. Numbers being read over and over. People overwhelmed and confused. They search for staff. Everyone runs to staff for help. It got so bad that a staff had to read off numbers and get people in a line to go the various counters for service. Once my ticket was called it was a 5-10 minute process. Just renewing license, no new photo (need a form for this). Yes, had to get vision test. Folks take your time with vision test. Make sure you got your eyeglasses/corrective lenses with you. If you do no pass vision test, you will not get a license to drive. The staff at the counter was very friendly and helpful. My relative on the other hand had to reschedule another appointment because she forgot to bring an item to get her Real ID. Make sure you bring all necessary documents and paperwork that needs to be filled. The next day she went to a DMV closer to home without an appointment and they did not let her in. Someone told her you can walk in without an appointment. So, before going to DMV schedule an appointment, and bring all necessary documents and paperwork.

Luckily I checked my phone and there were several appointment time slots near the time I came in. I was so happy and fortunate. I quickly locked in my time slot. So everyone should prepare their DMV visit by making an appointment online. There were so many people who forgot to do that in the entrance. Anyways, they called out the tickets pretty quickly and I didn't need to wait that long. There were many chairs with a huge width available to sit. I had to register a non driver license state ID for my toddler daughter and the process was seamless and smooth. The only problem I had today was the window employee I was assigned to butchered up my daughter's address by putting the wrong apartment number. Luckily I caught the error and had him fix it. He fixed it fast and gave me the correct temporary state ID papers. Other than that it was an alright process besides the appointment time I had to make.

The facilities are very clean and well-kept. The employees are prompt and to the point - the female Latina receptionist is excellent. But, as always, this DMV has a few downsides: They stopped processing licenses and IDs - you have to go all the way down to Bayone or elsewhere for those. Lines often get wickedly long, even at the reception desk. Most employees aren't as nice as the receptionist, but they aren't obnoxious and helpful. You do need to book an appointment for most services, which helps with the wait time. There is no parking lot - only limited street parking and private lots nearby. Finally, during my last visits, I received some conflicting information. When inquiring about handicap plates, one receptionist said I need the handicap plate registration as well as a replacement plate registration. This isn't what the first receptionist told me and doesn't align with anything I found online. Overall, if you need to get registration, title, or plates, given its convenience and efficient staff, I'd recommend this DMV over most others.

Unfortunately the MVC locations closer to me either had no appointments or don't offer the services I need. Booking an appointment through the MVC website is pretty straightforward and you get confirmation right away. Once you get to the MVC you fall in line and check-in. They look your name up on the list and see when your appointment is. So really your appointment is just to allow you to check-in and not really for receiving service. Once they verify your documents they give you a ticket and you wait for your number to be called. It'll also tell you which window to go to. I didn't quite understand how the number system worked because at one time the same number was on the board 3 different times. All that said, the process was pretty efficient and I was out of the MVC within the hour. The employees I encountered were friendly and helpful.

It was super crowded inside but we registered pretty quickly and they called her right away to counter 5 to take her picture and sign her name on a paper. We waited until about 1:20pm for them to finally call her number to counter 11. The appt process def needs work but these are the pros and the cons to this location. Pros-close to the 2 train, easy for my elderly mother to walk to. Very clean location esp the restrooms, there was even a worker cleaning the bathroom when i was there making sure it stood clean. The staff here is super nice. The nicest I've ever encountered at any dmv location and the main reason i gave it 4 stars. Both ladies working counters 5 & 11 today were so nice to me and my mom and very helpful. My mom wasn't able to get her enhanced id during her renewal due to her name being misspelled and the lady working counter 11 gave us all the info to fix it and come back. She renewed the license for now and told us the price when she fixed everything to upgrade it to the enhanced. She was the sweetest. Cons-long wait Time even with appts, no security walking around the seating areas to ensure safety. There was a crazy guy talking to himself and bullying anyone that stood too close to him for his liking and when he was done he left and pushed a ton of people. Security should walk around observing those seated esp since people get very agitated waiting so long. I would def return due to the customer service alone but will expect to wait even on a Wednesday afternoon

After checking into the DMV, you are called to take your photo and then you wait. and wait. and wait. 1 hour later after you scanned your barcode, you will be called to your window to take your eye exam and pay your license fee. This time waited a bit longer. Get to the counter and told the system is down and they can't process me for real id. I'm told I could wait around and will be called again when the systems come back up. I sit around for almost two hours and go back to the same window. Then the guy tells me he can print out something for me to come back anytime before 4:30 pm. I just left after coming back only to be told the systems are still down. Told I could come back again tomorrow. Guy didn't even schedule me for an appointment even though I'm sure he could've. Also told me he could only extend my "pass" to tomorrow. Basically his definition of extending my pass is just writing on the original document. Seriously why am I being limited to only tomorrow? So if the systems are down again tomorrow what then? I realize that systems go down so if that's really the case then it is easy it is. But my experience at this location has been nothing but a waste of time. Partly my fault I guess because I was here a few days also and didn't have all my documents and happened to find an appointment for this morning. Guess I'll just keep checking or come back tomorrow.
