Anyplace that they push the all you can eat option is not what you look for when looking for a great meal. The place is cute but it's big and packed, so the service was good when you take that into account. If you like eating at Olive Garden you'll think it's good. We were lucky enough to snag seats at the bar, especially with the restaurant being completely packed. We were so excited to try the unlimited pasta we had heard about! The way it works is that you're served three different pastas with endless refills. During our visit, one of the pasta guys came around once with a refill of one of the pasta choices, but the other two never came back around. We had actually watched them offering refills to other tables, so it was a little disappointing that we didn't get the same opportunity. The food itself was delicious and definitely left me wanting more, but our bartender wasn't particularly friendly, which took away from the experience. There were also a lot of crying babies throughout our meal, which made an already loud and packed restaurant feel even more hectic. Overall, I'm glad we got to experience Lidias after hearing such great things, and the pasta concept is definitely unique. I just wish we would have had the option to have more. read more

I recently visited Kansas City on a three week work trip, and ate at Lidia's three times! I'm always on the lookout for great Italian food, and they certainly serve it here. The environment is also stunning-- upscale though not stuffy or overly formal. Service at the bar was always excellent. I got the Pasta Trio which was delicious, I just didn't like the cavatappi with mushrooms (because I don't like mushrooms) but the Bolognese was my favorite and there was also ravioli with a rosemary thyme butter sauce. I save that word for special occasions, like excellent food and tax refund season. First, the establishment itself. Lidia's is comfortable, spacious, and airy in a way that makes you want to sit down, take a deep breath, and pretend you live there. The design feels warm and open, like the kind of place where pasta is treated with respect. The staff? Always friendly, always knowledgeable, always on point. They move like a team that actually likes their job, which in the restaurant world is a five star blessing by itself. Now, the food. The quality is great, the flavors are excellent, and the portions do not insult your appetite. Everything tastes fresh, balanced, and made with intention. You can tell someone in that kitchen cares deeply about your happiness. The prices are surprisingly fair too, especially considering the level of quality. I had a great experience at Lidia's! I stopped in with a friend on a busy Saturday evening - we opted to sit at the bar instead of getting on the wait list, and right off the bat, service was excellent and extremely attentive. We ordered mocktails (delicious, very well done) and started the night off with some arancini. My goodness, these were INCREDIBLE. I couldn't tell you how they produce such a bright, vibrant lemon flavor in each bite, but it was absolutely delicious. We both opted for the daily pasta tasting menu for dinner, and were equally impressed with the dishes and the service as the pasta arrived. Come hungry as the pasta servings are quite generous and you will want to savor every bite. The space itself is spacious, beautiful, and the perfect setting for a date night or a special dinner. While they can accommodate a large group (we had 11), they are not the most group-friendly place. However, they clearly state on their website that they won't do more than 3 checks per table & if you have more than 6 people you only get 1 check so as long as you have those expectations, you can make it work. The service was great. The waitress was great & very friendly/knowledgeable, & there are several other employees who run around filling water, delivering food, clearing plates, etc. so you're never sitting there unattended. The deal of $39 for salad, unlimited pasta trio, & dessert is great. The pasta can also be made vegetarian to accommodate which is appreciated. However, the flavor of the pasta fell a little flat. While nothing was necessarily "bad", consensus was that it was a little bit boring & lacking interest. However, as someone with a plain palate I didn't mind this. One person in our party preferred their meat be cooked well done due to religious preferences & the restaurant was able to accommodate & they said it was quite delicious. The ice cream trio I chose for dessert was elegant & beautifully plated - see photo. While I didn't care for the banana flavored ice cream, I appreciated the variety of ice cream flavors. Underwhelming, especially for the price. This is a local favorite and has been recommended to me several times, but perhaps they are coasting on their reputation... I was excited that the menu had GF dishes clearly marked, that is such a help for diners such as myself. The dips were served with GF crackers, which I sincerely appreciated, but neither the dips nor the crackers were especially interesting. I had the "roasted" beet salad, which was just okay, I have had much better versions of this elsewhere (though the hazelnuts were a very nice touch). For the entree, I had spaghetti squash with shrimp. The squash was undercooked imo (though many people like pasta al dente, maybe that was the vibe they were going for) and the texture was off-putting, with several clumps of squash, detracting from the sense of it as a pasta substitute, and the shrimp were a bit tough. My dining companion had chicken piccata (the chicken had not been pounded, it was a full breast; not surprisingly, it was dry). The service was adequate, but far from doting on a quiet Monday night. Better late than never, so they say. I was here when Lidia was doing a book signing and they were offering a prefix menu. I had the Sunday sauce and my husband had the pasta tasting trio. I want to start off by saying the olive oil as an opener gave me much anticipation, I'm generally not into olive oil and it was one of the best olive oils I've had with table bread. For the antipasti, my favorite were the tuna stuffed peppers. The tangy peppers made an interesting mix with the tuna, and the arancini were crispy on the outside and chewy inside, which was nice. The Sunday sauce was really good, from the sauce to the meatballs and sausages. However, the pork shoulder was a little dry for my taste. The pasta trio was unlimited and my husband had two servings. I don't know exactly which ones they were, but all of them were delicious. We will definitely be back! read more

It's been a while since I've been here. We're in the area and decided to stop in for dinner. No reservations and they were packed. We got lucky and got to seated at a table in the bar area. Inside the restaurant is very beautiful. They have a huge glass chandelier in the middle of the dining room. I ordered a salad to start off and eggplant parmigiana for my entree while my friend ordered their traditional lasagna. We can't go wrong with those dishes. Waitress brought out bread with olive oil spread while we wait for our meal. It was delicious. My eggplant parmigiana was also great. I think the sauce made the dish and was as expected for an Italian dish. I sampled the lasagna, it was okay but won't say it's my favorite. The sauce was not a traditional red meat sauce. Overall, it was a nice dining experience. Priced a little high but as expected for an upscale dining experience. read more

Liz was our server and she was warm and gracious, knowledgeable without being presumptuous. Her wine recommendations were spot on and delighted our white and red drinkers both. Delicious pasta! We did the unlimited pasta trio, but we couldn't even finish our first plate, you could tell the pasta was homemade. The potato leek ravioli was to die for! The garbanzo pesto and cannellini Kalamata dips with focaccia were SO good, I can't wait to try my hand at making my own version at home. Make a reservation or go as soon as they open, it fills up fast! Our server was very sweet and attentive and the time it took to get our food was astounding. We were in and out in 30 ish minutes. We got the tiramisu to go, as that's my husbands favorite dessert. I make a traditional Italian tiramisu and he had yet to find one at a restaurant as good as mine as most taste more like a pudding consistency. She wanted to dine here occasionally if it was a special day like a birthday, even if its a long drive for us. The food is always fresh, pasta, meat, good sauces, desserts. Wine and drinks are good, and so is the service. The ratings for this place on Yelp are way too low, so I just had to post this. We really like Lidia's. I want to go back. Atmosphere is semi casual, but you can dress up if you want and you will fit in. I really like the high ceilings. Nice bar area. It's a very nice classy place. A few of us showed up early but we enjoyed the happy hour in the bar/lounge area. There's several happy hour beverages and small plates to choose from. Our table all went with the three course pasta trio and if you haven't been, I would highly recommend it. Just make sure to bring your appetite. It starts off with a Caesar salad. The thing was huge! Like double what you would expect. The Caesar dressing is pretty light and a bit vinegary but I liked it. And the focaccia croutons were delicious. Next comes the unlimited pasta trio. It varies based on the day but we tried the pappardelle bolognese, chicken ravioli, and Cacio e Pepe. They were all delicious and I'd have a hard time choosing a favorite. This was the freshest pasta I've ever had. They give you a ton and I couldn't even make it through one serving. Finally for dessert I chose the Delizie Al Limone-Light Lemon Sponge Cake Soaked with Limoncello, Lemon Pasty Cream, and Lemon Curd. So fresh and bright. I made room for it because it was so good. This was a really excellent experience! Our friends in town from Central Kansas wanted to visit Lidia's. Living here less than two years, we had not heard of it. but we were game to try it. Turns out my wife knew of the chef that is the owner of this place. Three of us opted for the special with three different pastas, a salad and dessert. The other diner very much enjoyed his short rib over potatoes. Our server, Susan, was very attentive and provided amazing service in this charming restaurant that used to be a train house north of Union Station. All of us agreed that we would like to return for another meal here. The Special this evening was three different pastas. One of them was a pear ravioli with pepper butter, another was a spiral pasta with some fiery tomato sauce and shrimp, accompanied by a fettuccine Bolognese that was a little light on the beef and pork. That was literally our only complaint. And it wasn't a complaint more like an observation. The Caesar salad here is easily in the top five I've ever had. The iso buco was meaty and tender, but it didn't have much flavor, which I thought was a little disappointing. it really was relying on the marinara sauce which I thought was unfortunate.
