A group of six people celebrated a birhtday. Here is the experience: 1. Uncomfortable seating with a location in the middle of the room neither cozy, nor private. 2. Medicre food. Very average overpriced salads. Entrees which two of could not even eat. One was undercooked even though we asked for medium/well done (came raw), the other was excessively salted pasta drifting in a call of oil. 3. 45 mintutes to an hour waiting for change of courses. Sitting with my guests at an empty table. 4. Extra do not exist, not even a basket of bread/better. But above all - bithday box which supposedly had a cake in it. After I came home I found 4 dry coockies in it! LOL They are really cheap. 5. Service. There was this woman is a home like dress. We could not figure out why she was around, it turned out she was one of the waitresses. A big turn off. 6. Food is expensive - around $50 to $70 per entree. Easily a top five KC dining experience for us! We went here for Valentine's Day* and thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. To start, we were welcomed at the door and offered to check our coats when checking in. Our service was extremely professional throughout and their timing was on point. It felt like we were never left waiting for the next course. The food was OUTSTANDING. Great presentation and flavor. I was blown away by the combination of flavors and especially the white asparagus and sunchoke soup, which was possibly the best soup I've ever had. Every dish was made to perfection, with just the right portion size not too much, not too little. Ambiance - The restaurant has a modern, casual vibe with minimalistic furniture. The servers were dressed in T-shirts and jeans with an apron, which made the place feel welcoming. It's not overly fancy or too simple, just the right balance. The staff was super attentive, greeting us warmly and making sure we were taken care of throughout dinner. Food - The menu has some unique and unexpected options like rabbit, squab, and wild boar, which I have not typically seen at premium restaurants in Kansas City. We started off with a Diet Coke and the Ichigo cocktail, followed by appetizers: wild mushroom bisque and 1900 smoked fish. For the main course, we ordered: Tenderloin of Beef with Foie Gras and Fig Toast Celeriac and Parsnip Pansotti in Duck Bolognese The duck had an Indian-inspired touch, it seemed like the stock had some Indian spices, which was a pleasant surprise! As an Indian myself, I had never tasted duck prepared this way before, and I absolutely loved it. The tenderloin was perfectly cooked at medium rare and the fig toast went well with it . Everything was superb: The oysters, the green veggies with cured salmon & vinaigrette gribiche, the porcini mushroom soup, the garganelli with beef & bone marrow ragu, and finally the rack of venison. TL;DR: Great food, especially the seafood, but the chef works with flavors that are easy to enjoy. It's classic fine-dining fare. If you're looking for a novel experience for $100/person, you can get much more for the money somewhere like The Antler Room or Corvino. The Restaurant at 1900 has been so beloved recently, and if you look through the reservation system, it looks like they're booked out for dinner more often than not, so I had high hopes coming into this reservation. My friend and I ordered a variety of starters, two mains, and a dessert, and I can confidently say you'll probably have a good experience dining here. HIGHLIGHTS The highlights were definitely the mains we ordered (Brown Sugar-Brined Berkshire Pork Chop and the Crispy Skin Half Amish Chicken) and the New England Chowder. If you're looking for a thick, hearty chowder, this is not for you. The chowder is in the style of New England, where the chef originates from, with delicate and nuanced flavors from the seafood that I haven't yet seen elsewhere in Kansas City. The chowder was definitely the highlight among the starters. As for the mains, the portions were just right, the meat was crisp on the outside and tender on the inside, and the sides complemented the dish perfectly. DOWNSIDES The other starters were a bit of a different story. It's almost as though the starters and the mains are playing off two different restaurant concepts, where the starters are small, avant-garde plates and the mains are your proven, easy-to-like dishes. While I appreciated the ideas present in the non-chowder starters, I can't say they particularly struck a chord with me. The Kabocha Squash and Hazelnut Agnolotti was beautifully presented and I loved the fall flavors in it, but the dish *needed* the sweetness of the squash to come together, and there were literally four pieces of pasta in that "pasta" starter. It's difficult to see underneath all the toppings, but it was seriously two fun-size pieces each of squash-stuffed pasta for me and my friend. If you're read my review of Stock Hill, the experience was as comical as that three-leaf strawberry salad. The experience with the Deviled Rabbit with Toast and Jam was similar. The concept was interesting, but the execution was lacking. I love mustard, but it was the only flavor present in the dish. Eating the rabbit on its own, without the toast that had been swiped with mustard, revealed more of the tender, beautiful flavors that rabbit is known for when it's cooked well. As for the Huckleberry Cheesecake dessert, it was tasty but lacked style--without the fluffiness of some signature cheesecake or the dense, towering build of others. I would recommend trying one of the other desserts. RECOMMEND? I would still come back to the Restaurant at 1900, and I would recommend to others as well for those looking for a fine dining experience on a weekday night without having to make the trek all the way downtown. It's nice enough to do for an anniversary dinner or other special occasion. When ordering, I would just stick mostly to mains and ask the server for popular starter recommendations, if ordering any. Keep in mind that while the restaurant may look like it's booked out, there are a number of seats that seem to be reserved for walk-ins. When I made my reservation, it looked like I took the very last spot for that night. I showed up at 5pm for the reservation and the place was sparsely populated until around 6:30-7. Don't be afraid if you can't get a reservation; just call the restaurant and ask if they have walk-in availability for that night. read more

My boyfriend and I went here for a date night last week after a concert. He told them ahead of time it was a special occasion for us, and they were very accommodating. We had an excellent seat in a corner booth, and the restaurant was packed. Our server Dan was amazing. He was very knowledgeable on the menu. All the servers were friendly and personable. We started with the potato and apple latkes appetizer. They are a smaller portion, but they were delicious. I got the Halibut, and he got the pheasant. The pheasant was a large portion if you are looking to share. Both were good. We got two coffees after and our server even brought us a free dessert for our wait for our entrees even though we were enjoying our time there and didn't notice. Love was in the air this Valentines Day and I am so glad we got to celebrate it here! As soon as we walked in we were greeted by the sweetest hostesses who guided us to our cozy little corner for dinner. We ordered a bottle of red wine and began our wonderful evening. Our server was friendly, informative, and so gracious. I was thrilled with the overall service from everyone, they pay such great attention to detail and were sure to check on us consistently. I ate the: salmon over crispy rice, lobster three ways, and the steak. The salmon tasted so fresh and the crispy rice was not soggy at all, despite being accompanied by a nice sauce. Excited to finally dine at Restaurant 1900 and to experience the amazing cuisine of Executive Chef Linda Duerr. She was a James Beard Best Chef Midwest 2020 semi-finalist. Unfortunately the Beard Awards were cancelled due to Covid. Stunning restaurant decor, exemplary service and superb food and presentation. Maybe this is our new fine dining spot to replace bluestem. We had a 5:30pm reservation indoors and for the first hour, we owned the dining room. Loved the artwork and nostalgic salt and pepper shakers on display. We started with the Wild Mushroom Toast with Cashew Cream. Those mushrooms were decadent. We split the Roasted White Asparagus salad. It was beautifully plated and so refreshing. For entrees I ordered the Black Garlic Linguine in White Clam Sauce, while my wife ordered the Ricotta and Shiitake Mushroom Pansotti. You can order a full or half order off the menu. My pasta featured rich flavors and many textures. It was so filling. My wife's was delicate triangle ravioli in goat butter sauce. For dessert, we ordered The 1900 Cookie Plate, each crafted with lots of love, like someone's grandmother made them. It was a spectacular evening of fine dining. This is h ands down one of my favorite restaurants in KC. I tell everyone to go here! I have been a number of times, and each time I get so excited to try something new on the menu. The menu changes fairly often which makes for a good excuse to continue to go back. This is a great place to go for a special occasion or nice date night. I haven't had a chance to sit at the newly renovated outdoor seating yet, but the space looks amazing and I can't wait to go when the weather is nice and enjoy sitting out there. They expanded their outdoor seating with COVID to offer more social distancing and for those who want to stay outside. The inside is gorgeous and the bar is beautiful. This is also a great spot if you are just wanting to grab a drink and relax at the bar. You really can make your time here whatever you want. You can go for a nice lunch, sit at the bar and grab a drink or sit in the dining room and enjoy a delicious meal. The Restaurant at 1900 is a glamorous place. As it should be, in a repurposed building that is the most iconic example of midcentury modern architecture in KC. The décor reflects that heritage, with furniture and art consistent with the period occupying the inside space. Outdoors is a space defined by a stainless steel pergola, with a ceiling of retractable canvas panels. On the left, as you enter the space from the restaurant, is a remarkable fountain smoothly cascading over a massive wall of polished granite that would not be out of place in the lobby of a corporate headquarters or a museum. This plays to a congregation of the privileged. The patrons consist of, on one hand, moneyed retirees in blue blazers with their wives in Episcopalian dresses, and, on the other, a younger group that tilts fashionista. There's an air of relaxed formality, if that makes any sense. If you like to fancy up, this is your kind of place. The focus on presentation extends to the cuisine, which, it should be noted, is not mid20th century at all, but follows the current trend of lighter and international on the way to delicious. Every restaurant with any ambition these days touts the seasonality of its menu, but this week, at least, you can eat gnudi with fiddlehead ferns and fresh morels - produce as evanescent as spring itself. Gnudi are like large gnocchi, and require skilled labor. This is a kitchen that knows culinary technique. Pete Wells, the restaurant critic for the NY Times, recently recommended ordering soup at a nice restaurant, his rationale being that soup is never a big seller, so if a chef puts it on the menu, there must be a reason. I wanted to send Mr. Wells a thank you note after ordering the smoked sable chowder, which was spectacularly presented in an unusual dish with wide margins and a baseball-sized depression in the center, delivered with a perfect isosceles triangle of a little biscuit. Marvelous. If any other restaurant in this town offers any iteration of smoked sable, I'd like to know about it. What a delight to find things that are so carefully considered, and unique. A typical meal is eaten and done. This restaurant is atypical, as it offers something you'll recall with pleasure the next day and beyond. If you are fortunate enough to be among the privileged, this is an experience to seek out, savor and appreciate. read more

I want to start by saying that it's a travesty that this spot doesn't have more reviews. I had one of the best meals I've had in ages there last night and the lack of reviews makes it look less popular than it should be. Anyway, I went here last night with my family to celebrate my dad's birthday. And wow, from the moment we walked in, it was a master class in service. Firstly, when I booked the reservation, I made sure I noted that we were celebrating a birthday. So when we walked in and I gave our names, both hostesses wished my dad a happy birthday. Then they offered to take our coats, which we gave them (more on that later). We were seated at an intimate table right behind the hostess stand, that was blocked by a gorgeous wood screen, and next to a window, out of which was a really pretty view of the trees and lawn. Our waitress came over right away and offered us still or sparkling water, which she did a good job of keeping filled all night. She also noted my dad's birthday, as did a manager who later dropped off food. My dad was on the edge of being embarrassed but I think he liked it . As far as drinks, my mom got a wine that was on special, my dad got a martini, and I ordered the cherry fizz. I don't know what I was expecting but I think it was just soda water with cherry juice, which was what I was hoping it would be. My dad thought the martini was good and found the olive to be really interesting. The manager said it's kept in cherry juice (maybe)? We ordered the tempura fried mushrooms for an appetizer and my dad, always the adventurous eater, ordered the sweetbreads for himself. The mushrooms were BOMB. They were so light and crunchy and unctuous and the aiolis that were with it were terrific - there was also maybe fried kale underneath, which was super yummy too. My dad was DELIGHTED with his sweetbreads. I tried a tiny bite, to say I have tried sweetbreads, and while I didn't "get" sweetbreads, it did seem like it tasted good for sweetbreads, and the potato salad with it was delicious. For our main courses, I ordered the lobster pop tart and the smaller portion of the trottole in taleggio cream sauce. The pop tart was SO good. I gobbled it up in moments, but it was filled with leeks and tarragon, with the lobster. It was clearly a homemade puff pastry and the whipped cream with it was so strange but delicious. The pasta was also delicious but the pop tart was the star. My mom got the mezze plate and was so so happy with it. My dad got the grilled cheese and also loved it. For dessert, we ordered the butterscotch pudding, which was truly moan-inducing. When the bill came, we discovered that it was really quite reasonable for the 3 of us. And once we left, they grabbed our coats and help them out for us, without us giving our names or anything. Very impressed. Really, I can't say enough good things about this spot. I haven't had service like that since the American Restaurant, which is just so rare now. The only criticism I could have is that the pace was exceptionally leisurely, which the surrounding tables seemed to have brisker service. The location and ambiance of this new spot is very exciting for me. I've lived in the area for almost my entire life and don't think I've ever visited these buildings, though I do drive past them on a daily basis. I've now been two separate times in the span of two months and have enjoyed both visits. Something cool about this though is that this restaurant is constantly updating and reworking their dishes and I'm sure they'll find that jackpot in the near future. I don't even know how to adequately express how yummy these are. They delicately fry several different types of mushrooms along with kale and other yummy sides. The dipping sauces are to die for! The other entrees at our table included the sea bass (which happened to be halibut the night we visited) and the lamb bolognese. For dessert, we had the cookie plate and chocolate mousse.
