My wife recently visited Lighting Smog, and unfortunately, our experience left much to be desired. The labor rate of $57.75 for a mere 15 minutes seemed exorbitant, especially when compared to dealership rates. It amounted to a staggering $231.00 per hour, which felt unjustified. To make matters worse, we were also charged additional fees. $3.00 card processing fee were added to the initial labor rate, bringing the total to $69.00. This alone was already a significant cost. What truly shocked us was when they offered to handle the registration process for an additional $39. On top of that, there was a 3% card processing fee of $19.00 just for using a credit card. This meant that the total cost for registration and emission test in card fees alone amounted to $58.00, not including the DMV fee. We felt taken advantage of and believe that this kind of pricing is unfair and potentially illegal. It is disheartening to encounter businesses that exploit their customers in this manner. We strongly advise others to be cautious when dealing with lighting smog. It may be worth exploring alternative options or seeking legal advice to ensure fair treatment. Overall, our experience was disappointing, and we hope that sharing our story will help others avoid similar situations. I had been here once before and all went well. The past few years I had been going to another test only location 2 blocks from home but they weren't answering their phone so I called lightning for a quote. Everyone charges more for vehicles 2000 and before and even more for a truck, no matter how small. I happened to stop at the bottom of the hill to see what their price was on my way to Lightening. $95.00. Tamika and Brian took great care and the final cost was $62.00. That's quite a savings! Lightning Smog is the right name for this place. It was fast! I made an appointment and they got me in that day. This is the second time I've been here with two different cars that needed smog certification at different times. Each time the person that helped me was very nice and professional. You sign in on an iPad set up then have a seat in the waiting area. Each time I was given an estimate of approximately 20-25 minutes and each time it took about 5 minutes which was awesome! They send the certificate info directly to the dmv and will also do registrations as well (although I didn't need this service, glad to know they do). Definitely will come here every time I need a smog for a car registration and highly recommend this place. read more

Went to lightning smog unexpectedly at 9am on a Saturday because my appointment at another spot got cancelled. I wasn't that happy to be up early on my day off, but the guy made it worth it! I was expecting a really expensive price for the smog on my 2013 Toyota Prius, but the price was super fair and he even gave me a discount because I told him that I paid for a groupon code for the other smog spot and my appointment got cancelled. Both guys were super nice, friendly, and helpful. Paid $62 for the service which was super quick by the way. It's in a really convenient spot too so if you have a long wait, there is a lot of spots on the 101 to check out. He even gave me a water when I didn't even mention I was thirsty. Will definitely be back next time I need a smog done and will be telling my friends to go to Lightning smog when they need their smog done. My cousin took her car here for a smog check on her 2002 Montero. She called around 3pm, they got her in at 3:30, smog check done by 3:50. She said they were extremely kind and professional. Not only did they do the smog check but they provided a print-out of a part that has been recalled on her ancient car that she is still eligible for. She would have never known had it not been for their superior service. She hates having to deal with anything pertaining to her car but she said they were extremely kind & helpful. Imagine taking your car here and picking it up and it won't start, well that's exactly what happened to me. There were only 2 people there when I went in, the owner and his employee. His employee was the one who did my smog and after I came back to get the car I was hoping that since he called me to tell me it was done that meant it passed, nope. He told me it failed for minor problems with the air box which he also made sure to mark with a huge paint marker in white. No big deal, I could fix that easily and get it fixed. Although now, the car won't start. I ended up getting very hostile vibes from the employee when I kept asking him if he was messing with me because something felt off about the situation. I ended up taking it to the shop I go to and towing it(over an hour away since I just work in Oceanside) and after 3 weeks in the shop he discovered while he was poking around in the engine bay with all sorts of tools he broke a ground wire to the main engine harness which lost me the sale of my car and caused a major headache for me to get fixed. Considering at first we thought he had friend the computer it was expensive to get that replaced as well. So now, because if this shop I didn't get to sell my car, get my car smogged since they failed it(paid for that), paid for a tow, diagnostic and a new engine harness. Would recommend to stay FAR away from this place and go elsewhere. Now I'm stuck with the car still and a few hundred dollar bill from the mechanic. Edit: You can see the owner responded, the car had an alternate head that just holds more oil because that was the only part available at the time has no affect to the smog by any means...it's a 20 year old civic. Car was in good running condition and the head was only replaced due to a stripped bolt. My mechanic has nothing to do with this because what was broken was a ground wire from him poking around with his tools, talk about non intrusive...the owner never received such hostility just accountability for his poor work. It's a shame he can't accept responsibility, but it is what it is. There's no way you drive a car around for 6 months after a repair and the one time it's in someone else's hands for 30 minutes it breaks. read more
