I was about to pay my registration online and was so shocked to see I needed a smog! And I needed it by the next day to avoid the most late fees! This is the smog station to visit if you need service on a Sunday. After unsuccessfully calling at least half a dozen other stations flagged as open by Yelp, I made an appointment with Brian, showed up in half an hour, and he completed the testing in another half hour. Very friendly and competent service, with good focus on COVID-19 safety. As always in public, please wear a mask. My only minor complaint is being charged at $3 credit card fee; after getting a $7 Yelp discount. So bring cash if you want to avoid that charge. read more

Had my jeep with a carb legal dodge v8 swap smogged. They did a good job on the smog. No issues there. The only comment I have is the first time I went there the smog tech wanted me to change my check engine light with a label underneath that says check engine, to a check engine light with a little check engine light symbol. Since 2001 when I did this swap my old check engine light and label was good enough for the referees and a dozen other smog techs. Not sure if some new smog rule came up but the light change was easy to do. I also had to weld up some exhaust leaks which was a fair request to pass smog, so no real delay. Anyway the shop was accommodating with my schedule and has experience with carb engine swap smog tests. Good to see my old Jeep with a 92 dodge 318 has no problems passing the sniff test. read more

Not happy. Im fair and reasonable and respectful, but I also call it out when it's deserved. I have been a regular customer here and gave a glowing review u can read for yourself that speaks to my fairness and objectivity. With 5 vehicles, I understand and respect the rules regs of the ridiculous CA gov'nt standards, but this is the 2nd vehicle now in the past two months that has failed this year due to 'visual' scrutiny, not because of the laughably strict CA emissions level., Upon visual scrutiny, 3 of 4 'clips' designed to hold air box in place were broken/missing. Again, the box itself is firmly in place held by a clip and in no way impacted the emissions results, on a vehicle that passed smog last time at this same shop with no changes to the components involved. Of course, the explanation now is that it should have been caught before, when it was done at the same shop. as all 5 of my cars had been for years. Say what u will, but imo this is the kind of scrutiny that happens when a business is 'looking' for reasons to fail ur vehicle. As i said, after years of coming here with the same well maintained vehicles, suddenly my cars are inexplicably failing 'visual' inspections. Draw ur own conclusions, I'm not trying to say I can interpret a business's motives, but I'm also not gonna pretend patterns don't mean something and genuinely curious how much this is happening here now. All the good customer service in the world doesn't compensate for questionable practices. Naturally, it's my car, not them applying different stadards this time around. Of course, a few 'clips' that had no impact or affect on the actual smog emissions numbers are 'required' OEM parts that must be present. Last time...same shop..same people...no changes whatsoever to this vehicle, a PRIUS hybrid btw, that scourge to the earth...but different results. Second time in a row, oddly enough, failing my last vehicle a month ago for a check engine light/missing sticker for CA legal performance airbox (both issues which could have been addressed immediately as the check angine was an unrelated known sensor i had the OBD module to clear and the airbox was a Amazon purchase easy to verify and/or call for replacement carb# for airbox), again failing NOT due to emissions but 'visual' scrutiny standards. A quick visual by them could have at least given me a heads up so I could simply address, as they KNEW it would fail due to either/both. Keep that in mind as u decide where to go for ur smog check, because if u don't know that there is a possible broken bracket, screw missing or God forbid a sticker not in the right place, regardless of weather or not ur car passes emissions tests with flying colors, this is absolutely the shop u need, so they can fail u and tell u after. They are making CA 'letter of the law' decisions here that would make the FBI blush and our Gov. proud. Well done, I feel safer already knowing a place like this exists If you appreciate visual inspection perfection standards applied to ur otherwise excellent emissions passing vehicles, this is where u need to be, no question. Because, of course, it's the states' intense unforgiving requirements, not their strict militant adherence to them, thats the issue. CA is def a 'safer' place with LS on the case, I assure u. Off to get my clips, brackets, or whatever the next visual interrogation reveals necessary, so make sure u got yours as well. Or perhaps, maybe just go somewhere where passing smog revolves around actual emissions and reasonable practices and application standards, not subjective yet supposedly objective nonsense. For context, 71 mph in a 70 on the freeway is breaking the law, by the letter of the law and should be scrutinized and penalized accordingly by every CHP officer, because obviously it's settled law!! Weird that it's often not though? But luckily it is here, so Bravo! I respect a business's right to choose how they apply their standars and.practices to important regulations, the same way I value reasonable and fair people having the opportunity to review and scrutinize them for how they do it. This shop, for me personally, has lost my business accordingly, despite the smiles and friendly approach. Not because a failed smog or two is so devastating, it's a relatively easy enough fix, but because they lost my trust, which is the most important principle I'm looking for in a business I choose to support. I, of course, have a free retest in hand, but I would rather pay the new fees all over again than support a business I don't trust and can absolutely no longer recommend. And for absolute clarity, I dealt directly with Brian, the owner, so there was nothing whatsoever lost in translation. I assure u. Amazing customer service here every time! I have gone here for multiple smogs and I am completely satisfied every time. This year, I called in and made an appointment. I made it for the next day at 930 and I was done with the smog by 945 and out the door. They automatically send the results to the DMV and you need to renew your registration within 90 days. Prices are fair and the offer military discounts. They also have an offer if you check in on yelp. They have a small lounge with chairs and magazines inside. There are also some chairs to enjoy fresh air outside. If you have a bit of a wait, you can walk down to the beach or go get food at one of the many places nearby. I schedule an appointment, and was able to to get in contact with Lightning Smog quickly. I've been coming to this location for the past two smog checks I needed to get done. I came in on a Sunday and was helped by the owner, Brian. I quickly find out he was Vietnamese and spoke it as well. He was very helpful and followed all COVID protocols. I left my car with him for about an hour and half before he called me to pick it up. Just a heads up for anyone with a car older than 1995, it might take a little longer for service depending on how busy it is. I also believe someone has to be certified to check the older cars. Previously, there was a miscommunication that left a bad taste in my mouth, but James called me back the following day apologizing for the mistake and making it up to me. He didn't give me an excuse, he just said that they take full responsibility of the miscommunication and wanted to make it right if I could give them another chance. I decided to give Lightning Smog another shot so I scheduled a smog test and car registration for later in the week. I happened to arrive 30 minutes earlier than my appointment time, but James saw me walk out of my car and greeted me asap. He got me started on all the paperwork and explained everything to me thoroughly. He was really knowledgeable and definitely a personable guy. Trang did my smog super quick, while James took care of the car registration part. Once the documentation was done, James even went the extra step to screw on the license plate for me. Everything was done within 30 minutes! No need to wait at the DMV for 5 hours, Lightning Smog can do it for you within an hour! The people at this business know what EXCELLENT customer satisfaction is and will go above and beyond to make sure that every customer is more than satisfied here. What I really appreciate is that they followed up with me, took full responsibility of their mistake, and offered to make it right. I really respect when the business does that. I made an appointment, arrived 10min early and they still took my Jeep right away. I filled out the necessary paperwork on a digital kiosk they have set up in their customer lounge. (The customer lounge is nothing to brag about, but you won't sit in there for long, so it doesn't really matter!) It took only 10 minutes for the smogging. It was $55. They offered to handle the registration transfer for me (for $60), but I needed that done at AAA. James was super nice and helpful. Overall, fantastic experience! I called T&T Auto smog in oceanside and was told their price is $90.00. That is nearly a 50% savings for the same service. That's a scam in my book.
