a bacon, egg, & cheese on a roll is an essential part of the NYC food experience, so it's no surprise that Lil' Frankie's Italian spin on the classic breakfast sandwich is an essential order at the narrow sandwich shop. "The Fran" is the sando's name and consists of eggs, crispy guanciale, fontina cheese, & arugula on a Ciabatta roll. this sandwich is a great mix of flavors from silky smoothness of the eggs fried in olive oil to the salty salty sweet fattiness of the guanciale (pig's cheeks) to the sharpness of the fontina cheese to the peppery slight bitterness of the arugula--all sandwiched in a crusty ciabatta roll with a soft chewy inside. while nothing will replace a classic bacon egg & cheese, this is a worthy order for something off-the-beaten-path. Lil' Frankie's Grocery serves a sandwich menu during the day and then a pizza-centric menu at night. there are Italian-groceries like olive oils, tomato sauces, pastas, etc. in the narrow space. there is a large communal table for seating. the small deli space upfront is where the sandwiches are made. service is quick and friendly.

Absolutely love every establishment run by Frank. So I'm a little biased. I couldn't wait to check out the grocery and I was not let down! Very pleasant staff and delicious food. I recommend you eat your sandwich asap before the mozzarella juices soak the focaccia (don't walk to Washington square park in 95 degree weather to eat it). Tasted amazing!

Amazing sandwich shop! I stumbled by on my way to another spot by chance. Homemade focaccia and fresh mozzarella daily. Shocked this doesn't have more reviews -- maybe it's new? Also large enough to get one and split.

We sat on the patio, which was perfect for a summer day. We enjoyed everything we ate and were genuinely left wanting more by the end of the meal. *Cast Iron Focaccia: Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. The tomato conserva alongside it was delicious. *Mortadella con Pistacchio: Simple and well executed. Great mortadella. *Escarole: Reminded me of a Caesar salad. The leaves were crisp and generously dressed, which I loved. *Braised Beans: I generally do not love beans, but I loved this dish. It felt like a hearty, comforting bean stew. *Rigatoni Alla Gricia: My favorite dish of the night. Rich and creamy with salty guanciale and perfectly cooked pasta. *Roasted Half Chicken: Usually chicken is not something I get excited about at restaurants because it can be bland, dry, or both. This was one of the best restaurant chicken dishes I have ever had. It was perfectly moist, incredibly well seasoned, and felt like a thoughtfully composed dish rather than just a piece of chicken on a plate. Even the white meat was tender, and the skin was fantastic. The service was excellent throughout the meal. Combined with the beautiful setting and consistently strong food, it made for a memorable dining experience.

It took more than 10 minutes for our wine to arrive after we ordered it. After we finished eating, our dirty plates sat on the table for over 15 minutes while multiple staff members walked by without clearing them. I eventually had to place a plate over my food just to get someone's attention. Our wine glasses were never refilled, and the only time anyone checked on us was after we had completely finished our meal to ask how the food was. It's frustrating because the kitchen did an excellent job, but the service fell far short of the quality of the food. I probably won't return because there's so many options in the city.

Water and excellent bread arrived immediately and the waiter was helpful describing dishes and giving advice. Salads were fresh and crisp. Caesar was nicely dressed and the mixed salad was a nice combination with well balanced herb vinaigrette. Seafood dishes had large amounts of fresh seafood and the veal picatta had the lemony flavor you expect without excessive acidity. Dessert was tasty and innovative. The ricotta based cheese cake wasn't as smooth as the cream cheese form but the citrus flavor was great. Throughout the meal water and bread were refilled, plates from completed courses removed and next delivered without being overly hovering. All in all a really great meal.

It works especially well for a mixed group since they have plenty of options including dishes without meat and everyone can find something. Even my picky niece and nephew were happy. My favorite entree is the Capellini Puttanesca, with capers, olives, basil, and anchovies. It's super tasty, satisfying, and the perfect portion. I also love that they offer wine by the glass and the service is consistently attentive. The waiters are always moving through the room, checking tables, refilling water, and making sure people have what they need. It's good, reliable, and near Broadway. NOTES/TIPS: **Reservations recommended via Google, Open Table; wheelchair accessible; clean bathrooms.
