I've had lunch at Regina's Grocery more times than I can count, and after working my way through the entire menu, I can say confidently: this place is absolutely worth a visit. Regina's isn't just another sandwich shop--it's a deeply personal, family-run Italian deli that feels like stepping into someone's home kitchen. Founded in 2017 on Orchard Street by Roman Grandinetti, the shop pays tribute to the Bensonhurst social clubs and old-school Italian groceries he grew up with. It's named for his mother, Regina, who still makes the sauces and meatballs using family recipes. The walls are lined with vintage family photos, and every sandwich on the menu is named after a real relative--"Uncle Jimmy," "Grandma Lucy," "Uncle John." That sense of family is the whole heart of the place. As for the food? Consistently excellent. The ingredients are fresh, the flavors bright, and the portions generous. My personal go-tos are the Uncle Jimmy--stacked with prosciutto, hot sopressata, smoked ham, fresh mozz, roasted peppers, and their addictive chili spread--and the Meatball Parm, which is one of the best in the city when it's on special. The Uncle John is another classic that really shows off the quality of their meats. Yes, the prices run a little high, but the overall quality and care that go into these sandwiches make it feel justified. Long overdue review. Worth checking out if you're in the city and you like sandwiches, especially Italian sandwiches. No frills place. It's tiny - basically just order at the counter. There isn't really seating inside, just a two topper outside. There wasn't a line when I went, but it took awhile to get our order because they prioritized pick up / delivery orders. I got the Uncle Jimmy without the hot pepper spread because I can't do spicy. The other person I was with got the same, but with the spread. Stopped by because I saw it was ranked #1 on Beli for Italian Sandwiches in NYC. Don't think it quite lived up to the title, but they were good sandwiches all the same. Quite expensive for their size though, I expected a bit more out of an almost $20 sandwich. We got the Uncle John and Roman to split between two people and finished everything. I thought I would like the Roman more since I like pesto (nut-free!), but surprisingly the Uncle John came out on top. The hero was softer and fluffier bread, and I enjoyed the three different deli meats. The smoked chicken was good in the Roman, but not as flavorful and the stirato bread was a bit hard. Both sandwiches were just lacking a bit in the sauce/flavor department, I could've used some extra pesto in the Roman and more of the roasted red peppers on both. read more

Not a warm welcome would be an understatement. It felt like a bother to even be there. When I asked if they were doing the muffaletta (which was on Instagram) and was told "No," I replied that I was really sad not to be able to get it. I was then met with a response along the lines of, "When were you even here when that was here?" Just awkward. I went for the Uncle John. It was pretty much flavorless. No zing, no seasoning, nothing. For a lunch that cost over $50 for two sandwiches, two cokes, and a bag of chips, I was super disappointed. I had the eggplant parmesan hero. It was a large portion with plenty of cheese and buttery eggplant, with plenty of sauce and bold garlicky flavor. The bread did get a bit soggy by the end, but that wasn't a huge deal. Another minor annoyance is that the cheese got really stuck to the wax paper and was hard to get off. This cozy little Italian grocery and sandwich shop's decor suggests it's been around much longer than its 3 years of existence. Maybe it's the black and white floral tile floor or that the owner takes orders and yells them back at his ma, who makes all the sandwiches. It's a very New York place with very New York flavors. Take the Uncle Rocco, which is a classic tuna sandwich you'd find at any classic Italian deli only made even better with their own pepper paste, fresh mozzarella, broccoli rabe, arugula, balsamic, and extra virgin olive oil on a classic hero. The bread is exceptionally fresh, and the sandwich is simultaneously tart, savory, and earthy. It's my favorite on their menu. They don't always have tuna, so sometimes getting the Uncle Rocco is out of the question. While at most sandwich shops, pescatarians and vegetarians would simply be out of luck lest they want a mediocre meal, Regina's comes to the rescue with veg friendly options aplenty. I'd point a meat-free seeking patron to the Cousin Steven, which has eggplant, zucchini, mozzarella, celery, capers, and arugula on a classic hero. Gotta get your sandwich on a classic hero, it's the best. There will likely be a little wait to get your sandwich, particularly during peak times as it's a very small team preparing each item, but I promise your meal will be that much more satisfying. Regina's grocery had been on my hit list for years. I finally made the trip over a couple nights ago to grab sandwiches for a train ride upstate. The service was amazing, and the sandwiches were being wrapped up at the exact time I came in minutes before they closed at 6 PM. We opted for the Uncle chubby, Uncle Jimmy, and Cousin Cristina. We all sampled each other sandwiches and they were all delicious, but I'd have to say the clear winner would be the uncle Jimmy. We also got it on the semolina roll which made the sandwich about twice the size. I think the key at Regina's grocery is the spicy pepper spread - any sandwich with that cannot not be good. I'm looking forward to returning to Regina's grocery to try some more of their sandwich selections. You really can't beat charcuterie cold cuts on crusty fresh bread. read more
