This is a great family diner frequented by people who like to give long, hard stares at whoever walks in the door. Like, long enough that they would have started a fist fight in a big city or a dive bar. The servers do their best, but that can still be a bit slow at times. The servers are nice, though. Some of the dishes are great, some are...enh. The mashed potatoes and gravy both taste like they came from mixes, even if they didn't. The hominy is delicious. The collard greens are good, but they're about half bacon. The fried catfish is fantastic, and I'm happy to walk through the wall of stares and wait for the server in order to get a plate of it. Not everything there is homemade. For sure the hush puppies come frozen in a bag, and many of the pies come frozen, too. This place feels like it should be on Kitchen Nightmares. Old, stale and, worst of all, the food is abysmal. We lack an IHOP or Denny's here and seem to have no end of geriatric people who prefer their food bland and greasy, so this place continues to exist. I've gone for dinner and breakfast, of my own accord, other times I've felt obligated to go due to a friend's invitation and I'm always disappointed. The coffee mugs are a mixed up lot, many from local businesses, which would be charming if they weren't chipped and coffee stained. The plates? Similarly roughed up. Silverware has come to the table absolutely disgusting. I fear what the kitchen looks like. The bacon...facon? I don't really know what it is, but it looks more like dog treats than any bacon I've made or eaten anywhere else. No restaurant should survive that can screw up something as fundamental to breakfast as bacon is and then serve it on a chipped plate. read more

The food has been on a steady decline for about six months. Yesterday I ordered a open biscuit with a sausage patty on each side and a scrambled egg covered with gravy it was absolutely tasteless they have recently switched to a different breakfast sausage which has absolutely no taste, and it was served at less than room temperature . I will continue too go for coffee in the morning but I will not order food again until maybe late January maybe they'll be back Too normal by then. read more

I have eaten here at least 9-10 times and every time has been as lousy as the last. I have been there both for breakfast and dinner and I have only found two things that I liked, the jalapeno corn bread and the potato soup...not enough of a reason to go back. I don't like eggs and asked if they could swap the eggs on a breakfast platter with anything else and the waitress said they would not and if I didn't want eggs, just order off of the a la cart menu. That would have been around $10 for a few items, yeah, great deal! I ate their all you can eat Mexican deal once, that was enough for me. It took over 45 minutes for the first plate to come out and was covered in baked on cheese that was obviously been sitting in the heat lamps or in the oven for far too long, and no, they weren't busy at all. It was gross and I realized, never eat food from other cultures in greasy spoons, especially if they can't do American food well. Came here for the first time with my husband for breakfast. I ordered the ham and cheese omelet, he ordered the steak and cheese skillet. Granted it was pretty busy when we went but, It took around 30 mins for our food to come out. There was no "I'm sorry your food is taking so long" no update or anything until I finally had to ask the waitress how much longer it was going to be for our food to come out. The food itself wasn't worth the wait. Absolutely no flavor, no seasoning to it all. It was only so-so after I put salt, pepper and Tabasco on it. Okay let me start by saying, I love Little Tex. I have been going there forever! The food WAS always great and the staff WAS always pleasant. That is the ONLY reason why this is a three star review and not a two star. I when into Little Tex this morning at 0645ish (they open at 0600) for breakfast by myself (thank god). I ordered pancakes, hash browns, bacon, and coffee/water. I was blown away by how fast it came out of the kitchen (like less then two minuets fast). I should have been a little more skeptical right then. My food was lukewarm at best, and unusually bland. It was vey obvious that is was premade. That is not that big of a deal, but at least have it hot? I used to brag about how great this place was even in other states and countries. I'm so glad I was alone today, because I would have been embarrassed to have taken someone out this morning. Anyway I completely finish my (now cold) breakfast, coffee, and even the water they gave me. Not one time was I checked on for a refill, and I planned on ordering a to go meal for someone else. Never got the chance! I was going to die of dehydration before my waitress came back, so paid and went to taco bell instead.... I really wanted to try their BBQ ribs for dinner sometime, I will someday but it will be a long while before I go back. Please don't keep heading in this direction Little Tex! I have been back to the lil Tex multiple times. I have to admit it is very predictable and what you see is what you get. The food is out of the box cafeteria food I would equate to an 80's high school menu or a retirement home. The best thing this place has going for it, is location and nothing better competing in the genre on the menu in cove. It definitely isn't the food. read more

Awesome home style restaurant. Has a real Texas atmosphere where people open doors for you and are real polite. It's in a great spot across from the fire station in Copperas Cove and has adequate parking. I had the Saturday night special of Beef brisket with pinto beans, Cole slaw, and Texas toast. When we order for pick up there is always something missing from simple things like silverware or straws (even though we remind them when we place order) to the gravy for my meal. After hearing about how good the breakfast was from my wife, I figured that we would try this place for dinner. Walls were dirty, something that looked like blood from a bug being smashed from 3 months ago was at eye level. Not to mention food reminisce from other guests on the wall. Under our booth was very sticky. The only thing good and eatible from our order was the Mucho Nachos. Pic de gio was bland. Sour cream came in plastic packs on top of the nacho. My wife's Lemmon Pepper chicken was more like lemon and lemon rubber. My chicken fried steak was crispy on the top, soaked in grease on the bottom. Steak fries needed a ton of salt until I bit into one saturated in.... yup, grease. Green beans were mush. If I could rate this place as a zero for lunch and dinner I would. I'm just going to say my family and I were definitely not satisfied. The wait was long and we just wanted a good meal for lunch. However, it turned out to be the complete opposite. I should of looked at the reviews first. Because clearly that was the worst experience we have ever had. The food tasted bland and like it was all cooked in a microwave. The restaurant clearly had way too many items on their menu and would benefit more for having it minimized. Food was average but felt good to be in a environment surrounded by friendly locals. I have been here several times, always left full and pleased. The first time, I had the catfish. The catfish was fantastic. With that experience, the only down fall, I had a fork that had some previous crusted food on it. I have been there for some breakfasts, and it's always been delicious. My favorite here is the gravy and biscuits with a side of sunny side up eggs, so good here. However, one experience in the morning I found a long hair in my gravy. Lil'-Tex is like one of the Ol' Farmers and Ranchers hang out after being out checking their livestock in the early morning while everyone else is still asleep in their warm little cozy beds. Also, some of the local contractors, labors, and local businessmen who stop in for their morning cup of coffee or breakfast to start the day. Every small country town has a local favorite hangout during the week and weekends some cases. Now, there are a lot of out of towners, or out of State individuals and families who have visited Lil'- Tex, and they just don't understand as taught in the military and other types of businesses, "Cultural Diversity". What this means for the less educated is that, "We Texans like our little hole in the wall cafés and restaurants, and we take offense if you dislike it and then have to write terrible reviews or statements without understanding our cultural. Just as if I or others were to visit your city or town and don't understand your culture we talk smack about their businesses. And, as I know you would get upset and make a statement as such; "If you don't like it here get out". Well, We Texans aren't like that. We would just tell you to relax and give it a try and try to enjoy the moment. Have a cup of coffee or sweet tea and relax. But, to talk nasty about a place you never really given a chance... So, let me tell you this, Lil'-Tex "Has Specials" during the week. My sister and I ordered trench toast and my niece ordered an omelette it took about 10-15 minutes to cook and was delivered to our table. Both plates of french toast had burnt portions. The tired ol' booths, chairs, tables, and decor should be declared extinct, as this local favorite is an eyesore. Their food is typical of what you'd expect at a country diner, with decent portions and a greasy spoon feel. Their prices are average to above average for such a joint, but it is always packed to the gills with many familiar faces, as this is a small town establishment. I try to go there often as the food and service is pretty good. And the variety on the menu goes from Tex-Mex to chicken fried steak to shrimp and so on.
