Given to me by a regal looking nine-year old redhead with a thin purple glow-stick weaved into her braids. Hard to miss the bright lavender building sited far across the parking lot from Rogue Creamery. So although we'd never heard of Lillie Belle Farms Artisan Chocolates until our pop in at the creamery last week, the building alone (see photo) was unique enough to draw us in. What we found when we entered was considerably less rustic than what we expected based on the outside. What we found on the inside was sophisticated and cool from a design standpoint (and a little cool from a temperature standpoint to protect the chocolate treasures.). What we experienced was a wonderful chocolate aroma. What we saw was the kitchen workroom behind big windows where the chocolates are made. What captured our attention was the beautiful array of dozens of varieties of artisan chocolates in long glass cases. One chocolate creation looking more intriguing than the next and sounding as intriguing as the previous. THE CHOCOLATES: We had tough time limiting our choices but at $2 per chocolate the practical reality is we needed to choose. Our choices were: fig and marzipan, hazelnut chew, chili caramel, absinthe ganache, a dark chocolate gem filled with a (Amarone?) cherry and Polish vodka, Anejo (with a salt rim), apricot - honey - almond, white chocolate gin martini (with a teeny olive on top) and Makers (with a praline pecan on top). When we savored these fabulous chocolates at home the next day, we agreed every one was delicious and worth the cost. (Our favorites of the ones we bought were the first six on the above list.) THE BACK STORY: The chocolate maker's (Jeff Shepherd's) back story is interesting as he and his wife, Lillie, own an organic berry farm in the Applegate Valley not far from Central Point. They started making four kinds of chocolate truffles using their berries and selling them at a local market. We are told the demand for their creations grew to a point where opening a production and retail facility and expanding the variety of chocolates made sense. We're glad they did and that we discovered Lillie Belle chocolates through serendipity by spying the purple building housing the production - retail store on this trip. SERVICE & SAMPLES: Since some Yelp reviewers commented on less than stellar service when they visited Lillie Belle, I think it's worth sharing that our service experience was very good. True enough that the young woman behind the counter was a little reserved at first. But once we started asking about the chocolates she was very helpful and she did a beautiful job of boxing our treasures. Also some reviewers mention their disappointment that there are no samples. So also worth sharing that on our visit there were samples offered at the counter of two kinds of chocolate covered almonds (one spicy and one not), small tastes of lavender caramels with sea salt, as well as a chili laden dark chocolate that was delicious (but definitely something that should be sampled last). The reality is this is not a high production facility like Sees where whole samples can be provided to all folks who walk through the door. In an artisan effort like this, working with low profit margins and high ingredient costs, seems to me samples would be cost prohibitive. So my expectation would be that they would not provide free samples. I guess it's all about expectations and reality being in synch or out that leads one to consider the lack of big samples as a bad thing or not a bad thing. BOTTOM LINE: Regardless, the chocolates here are excellent things! Each like a little work of art. Beautifully handcrafted bites of remarkable flavors for the soul and the tastebuds. Creations from the chocolatier's hands to your mouth. It doesn't get any more "farm to fork" than this. I'm posting this as four star review, although it is more like 4.5, only so they have some place to go when I visit again to buy more of these remarkable chocolates! I wonder if they ship chocolates for gifts? There's an idea! If any Yeep wanted to test that out, I'd be happy to send along my mailing address. :-) read more

I do love my chocolate and I thought I was in heaven seeing Lillie Belle Farms right next door to the splendid Rogue Creamery. So it was a bit of a surprise to have a better experience at the cheese shop. As others have noted, the service was a little bit odd. The owner and chocolatier, Jeff, was occupied with another customer so we didn't get to meet. I think it may have made a difference in our experience. We had to ask for samples, none were offered, and then it was just one type of truffle. Their biggest seller is the Lavender Caramel which is topped with Fleur du Sel salt. And funnily enough the label is misspelled on the display case. I actually thought there was too much salt and the balance of flavors was off. We also purchased the marionberry, raspberry cordial, cherry cordial and hazelnut chew. All were quite good, but not the best I've ever had. I also ate truffles from different chocolatiers sold by Enchanted Florist in Ashland the following day and I preferred several of those items, especially truffles from Alma Chocolate (Portland). So they are definitely worth a try, especially in combination with Rogue Creamery, but I am somewhere between three and four stars. read more

It's hard to judge a place during the Covids but I'll try. I guess I was expecting a basic chocolatier setup, but everything was pre-packaged. The packaging was super cute and some were Grateful Dead themed (with permission from Bob himself no less!) The chocolates were amazing. We got the marble flight (blueberry was the star), chocolate pears, the larger chocolate pears with ginger, lavender caramels, hippie snacks (?), whiskey in the bar, and a caramelized almond dark chocolate bar. Chocolate bacon. Individual chocolates, so pretty, filled with different liquors. And the chocolate covered almonds plain or spicy. Wow. And on and on. They even make a blue cheese truffle using Rogue Creamery blue cheese. NAUGHTY. Talk about a kid in a candy store. You will be reduced to that. Their chocolates are not cheap but well worth the indulgence. You have not even experienced real chocolate until you come here. All chocolates in the cases were $2.00 each. They have prepackaged chocolates for less. The Lille Belle woman wouldn't offer any samples to me, while she offered samples to other guests. So delicious, funky, and memorable that you would believe it to be Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory. The trio of specialty shops--Lillie Belle for chocolate, Rogue Creamery for cheese, and a winery whose name I forgot--all looks very touristy. You are treated like a tourist, and the only other customers you see are tourists. But these places have not lost their local flavor and character beneath the veneer of touristy acclaim. Everything about Lillie Belle is very unique and handmade, like something that began as a personal hobby, an ambitious arts and crafts endeavor, a masterpiece from scratch fueled by raw imagination. (Okay this is starting to sound melodramatic, but it really is a cool place!) The display is simple, with little signs that describe each chocolate to order a la carte. You tell the cashier what you want and she will box everything up in a pretty little box, complete with a lilac ribbon as a souvenir of the lilac-colored shoppe. All the individual chocolates on display are $2 a piece, but they have some daily specials which are $1. Wayyy expensive if you think about it, but worth a try. If I lived around here, I would go broke for sure. Talk about death by chocolate... through bankruptcy. They have other pre-packaged chocolates, which are slightly cheaper. The chocolate bars are probably the best deal. There are also some creative whimsical experiments, such as hipster chocolate mustaches and chocolate fortune cookies. To make up for the steep price, I'm glad they have a good selection of samples! When I went, there was a specialty that was called the hippie crunch, two types of chocolate-coated almonds which were both delicious, some plain chocolate samples, and the super super super spicy chocolate. I can handle spicy to epic Korean levels, and I definitely needed to grab water afterwards. Interestingly, there's a time lag so don't feel like you're a boss until the spiciness kicks in. Here are my 2 cents on each of the chocolates: (+++) Blue cheese truffle: Moldy chocolate?! I much prefer traditional chocolate, but this was surprisingly good. They use the famous Rogue Creamery cheese next door. It's sprinkled with nuts, so the crunchy coating, decadent chocolate, and soft cheese make an extraordinary combination of textures and flavors. (+) Maker's Mark: nice and strong, but the chocolate is too sweet (+) Absinthe ganache: never tasted anything quite like this before. Very subtle but complex (-) Pistachio: alright, but could have used more pistachios (-) Anejo: I was excited about the lime and salt, but that's pretty much all you can taste. Go for it if lime and salt chocolate sounds good to you, but don't expect any tequila Take some time to look around. As you can see, I was so amazed I took a ton of pictures. Seeing all the creative and beautifully displayed chocolates is an experience of its own. There's even a window on the right side of the shop so you can see how they make the chocolate. This is a nationally renowned chocolatier. Some of the confections look too pretty to eat, but the helpful staff will give you a sample to help you overcome your hesitance. Extremely friendly store clerk, don't know her name but she is fantastic and will help you with whatever you need. Five star customer service. They are known for their lavender caramels, but I recommend the sample box. They also have some hot hot hot options for the more adventurous pallet. This is always a favorite of mine whenever I'm in visiting. The place is pretty quaint, but you can't miss it from the street, as it's bright purple. Inside you can sometimes see them making things in a special little viewing area and they usually have some kind of chocolate sculpture with a theme. My favorite was the zombie Easter bunnies, but it may have finally retired. They have all kinds of fun chocolates, so there's a little something for everyone, and if you don't see anything you'd like you can always try something new. I would say about half of the chocolate there is stuff I never would have dreamed of trying. Some favorites of mine are the cayenne caramel, absinthe ganache, lavender caramel, champagne something, and my favorite is the poppy seed cream. WOW. We went to Central Point just north of Ashland to go the Rogue Creamery, but right next door was this amazing artisan chocolate store..... Blue cheese truffles, the Elvis (bacon and peanut butter truffle), a chocolate-covered-cherry in a balsamic reduction, all scrumptious. Black pepper chocolates, cayenne caramels, a little tequila cup with salted edges and a yellow top, just like a mini margarita glass made from chocolate. And many, many other wonderful selections. For a unique gift, they have tiny edible chocolate paintings by a local artist. There are samples, and the staff was very knowledgeable. It's worth taking a small detour from I-5 to taste this goodness. It bothers me that other reviewers are bringing the rating down, because they hold a grudge against the owner (for example, a certain one-star review is from a competitor). Ignore those reviews and take my word for it - Lillie Belle is worth it and it's a five-star establishment. read more

There are 3 reasons I travel from San Diego to Southern Oregon every year, my in-laws, Rogue Creamery and Lillie Belle chocolates. Lillie Belle makes hand crafted chocolate. Period. Really, really good, chocolate like you would get in Europe. They have ganaches in orange, raspberry, cherry, chipotle, and other flavours. They also have a huge selection of bon bons, caramels and cups (think tiny chocolate shotglass filled with mana from the gods). Some of the flavours that they had on 8/14/15 were: Apple Ginger, Banana Honey (made with a 30 year old honey) and Balsamic Cherry Bon Bons. As well as Hazelnut Caramels (made with Oregon hazelnuts), Raspberry and Rum soaked Cherry Cordials, Gin Martini Cups(in a white chocolate cup), Cayenne Caramels, Lavender Caramels (their award winning trademark chocolate), Margarita and Martini Cups, and Peanut butter Patties. They also have chocolate covered fortune cookies, and fruits (depending on seasonal availability), an incredible chocolate covered maple bacon bar, a ghost chili infused chocolate bar (it doesn't melt in your mouth, it will melt your mouth), an bar that is aged in whiskey casks, as well as bars of various coco percentages. The individual chocolates are $2.00 each with the special of the day $1.00 each. The sampler box and the box of Lavender Caramels are $20 for 12, and the other items vary in price (as of 8/14/15 ... prices may change) The selection can vary daily as they make the chocolates in small batches, and be sure to check for the "oops" bags that have chocolates that aren't quite up to snuff to put in the display (but taste just as good as the ones in the window). And speaking of windows, you can watch them making the chocolates, but do not expect that they are standing there churning things out from 8-5, as they make the chocolates in small batches to maintain the freshness and quality of the product (and if you are very lucky, you will be there when they are making something brand new and need to do a taste test . . . . Driving from Seattle to Sacramento, this is a must stop, every time. I am a sucker for award-winning deliciousness, and Lillie Belle fits the bill. I always get treats for lucky recipients on the other end of my drive, and this last time ended up with a selection of Smokey Blue truffles, Marionberry and Peanut Butter bon bons, and, of course, the Lavender Sea Salt Caramel. The most popular were the Marionberry and Caramels, whereas the Smokey Blue had a novelty factor to it, but it just hit a wrong chord with me. I liked this place, and the chocolates are delicious. They are very creative with the combinations (yes, I even like the bacon chocolate) and are continually rotating flavors so there is always something new to try. The only thing that bothered me was the fact that the girls pick up the chocolates with their bare hands and place them into the little paper wrappers into the box. Chocolates that were accidentally selected, are put back. They also ring up the totals and handle money in between. Maybe if would be a little more sanitary if they used tongs to select the chocolates or gloves when placing them in the boxes. I LOVE CHOCOLATE!! I know chocolate... I wasn't prepared for Lillie Belle Farms. This place took me by surprise. I went in with 15 min to spare before an appointment and was blown away. This is hands down, the best chocolate I've ever had. You can really taste the LOVE in every bite. Their chocolates are beautiful. Most of the time chocolates are pretty but then you taste them and meh... but guess what... these taste even better than they look!! And the people that work here are AWESOME!! They were so friendly and welcoming and suggested things for me to try. I felt like I'd stepped into chocolate nirvana. I'll be coming back when I have more time!! This is now the best chocolatier in America. They have a lot of great truffles, bars, and even hot cocoa mix. You will not be disappointed. I strongly recommend their lemon truffles.
