I was recommended by my friends and Sharon K. of Sharon Nicole Photography to hire Stephanie Martinez for my bridal hair and makeup. At the time, Stephanie was the lead artist for Flawless, which happened to close right before my wedding (eek!). Fortunately, Stephanie started her own company and graciously had me booked in no time. She is an on-site artist, which means that will meet you at your house, venue site, or preferred location, since she doesn't have her own studio. She's also very responsive and prompt via email, which is a major plus for me! When I first met Stephanie at my bridal portraits, I was stunned by how talented and fashionable she was. Not only is she young and gorgeous (which really says something about her hair & makeup skills!), but she is super sweet and great to work with. While she is very open to your ideas and preferences for hair & makeup, Stephanie can also do a great job without suggestions from brides like me who don't usually wear makeup or get their hair did frequently. (She even convinced me to try out false eyelashes, which I don't regret at all now that I look at my photos!) I also booked her for my bridal party on my wedding day (FYI - she offers a group discount for parties of 5 or more), and I thought she did a terrific job for all my bridesmaids and me! She pretty much works at a rate of 1 person an hour for hair and makeup, but she prefers that you hire her assistant if you have more than 5 people in your party. Although the makeup feels a little heavy at first, it definitely settles in and makes you look naturally fresh and flawless in photos. The hair & makeup also lasts through sweat and tears for hours too, which is a big plus for brides-to-be! I'd mentioned when booking the session how long my hair is. The curling iron used seemed to be very cheap, since the curling wand I have gives me way more curl in less than half the time. Artee took photos afterwards and said she would post them on Instagram, but never did. I'm sure even she could see it was far from her best work. I first noticed that Katie was not the most attentive and just plain late and rude during a couple phone conversations, but I figured maybe she was not a phone person. Everyone deserves a second chance. I thought she would be courteous and professional in person as her reviews seemed to indicate. I was wrong. Her "new studio" at the time of my trial session for makeup and hair was her personal apartment. She did not explain this ahead of time which threw me off. The place was very clean and chic, super cute decor but it was very weird to use her restroom with her delicate clothing hanging in there. Katie cut me off when I attempted to discuss the overall look I was going for and tried to show her inspiration photos. She was busy being angry at her late hair person because she had some event to attend after my appointment. The hair person was sweet once she arrived but was discussing with Katie as she was doing my hair that it was not a full time job for her. Katie was trying to convince her to work on another project and speaking condescendingly about a recent project. Is not the point of a trial to have time to discuss what you want as a client? I could barely say anything and Katie kept cutting me off. The look ended up being very bizarre, not what I tried to request and too much even on camera at several angles. My hair updo came apart immediately after a handful of hours. Katie also kept checking her cell phone and texting during my trial as she was applying my makeup (not sanitary, eww). I was polite as I left but had a terrible feeling about how she would behave if I went ahead with her for my special event and how she would make people feel. I informed her later in writing and with ample notice that we would not move forward with her. She insisted we move forward, sending long, argumentative e-mails that did not make sense. I can only imagine she was going through a lot to treat me that way and have such strange behavior. I wish Katie a swift and lasting resolution to whatever causes those challenges. I also wish her future success but cannot recommend her based on my experience. I hope all of this information is helpful to others trying to make informed decisions about how to spend their resources.
