Came downtown this past Friday for a girls night and didn't realize it was a parent's weekend. With that being said, most places required a reservation or you had an 1.5h wait ahead of you. After a little wandering around we found liquid ginger. The line wasn't too long inside, so we decided we would try it. They were swamped and very busy still, but the staff was doing their best to accommodate everyone. We waited in a short line for maybe 15min before reaching the hostesses table. We were lucky to get seats at the sushi bar! The interior is very nice and has a nice vibe. This place is really great for nice dinners, nights out, or a good dinner. Service was definitely off that night. Our water specifically seemed to forget about the group of us since we were seated at the sushi bar. It took her 15 to get us waters and our other drinks didn't even come out until after we got out food (a considerable time later). Like I said it was busy, the sushi bar was swamped with orders, but they were working diligently to keep up with the influx of orders. Most of us ordered sushi, so we ended up waiting a considerable amount of time for our meals. My one friend ordered an entree from the kitchen and it came out within 10 minutes of her ordering it. Our sushi was served about 20-30 minutes after her dish. This is frustrating and slightly awkward as my friend felt bad eating while the rest of us didn't have any food yet. Again, this is no fault to the sushi chefs. They were working extremely hard to produce quality sushi for all the guests. My problem came with our server, Emma. She didn't check in on us at all, didn't even serve our dishes to us, and like I said, forgot to get us drinks, etc. While this was frustrating, I do not think this is a reflection of the restaurant overall. It appeared the other serves were fine keeping up with their tables. For the food, we started with the crab rangoons and steamed pork potstickers. These came out within 10 minutes of ordering and were great starters! They each included 6 pieces per order. The crab rangoons were stuffed with ample amounts of cream cheese and crab meat. They were perfectly crispy and I thought these were some of the better Rangoons I've had. The potstickers hit the spot, but weren't anything too special, pretty standard. For my sushi, I ordered the Golden Apple Roll (per our servers recommendation) and a daily special roll called the bonzai Roll. The golden apple roll included spicy crunchy salmon, Fuji apples, mango, and mango sauce. This was decent and something different but not my favorite. 5)3 flavors were super unique but there wasn't a sweetness at all oddly like I was expecting. Instead it had a distinct tart flavor to it. Different, but not my vibe. Now the bonzai roll was a hit! This roll included tuna, salmon, kani, and avocado inside, topped with tuna, salmon, yellowtail, and mayo, then flamed & torched, and finished with eel sauce, caviar, and scallions. There was certainly a lot going on in this one, but I could really taste all the different elements. The fish was extremely fresh and just divine. I also tried some of my friend's sashimi and was blown away with the quality of the fish--just amazing. Overall, we all loved the food here and would 100% return. The quality is quite good and the fish is melt in your mouth. You can tell they take a lot of pride in their sushi and it is evident in the taste and presentation alone. Now the service was certainly more desirable. I understand it was a very busy night, but our server just appeared to forget about us. Very disappointing as it slightly spoiled our experience and was not a good first impression. Again, we all agreed that we thought it wasn't a fair assessment of the restaurants service overall. I'm hoping next time the service is better and our server can do a better job serving us and checking in on us. I'm also surprised that she never offered to compensate anything in our bill, like our drinks that took 30+ minutes to come out and were served well after we had received our food. But it's not the end of the world. I would still recommend coming here, I actually think their sushi is better than Dragon Flys, better priced, and dare I say higher quality! read more

Located just behind the Hippodrome, in what was the Gainesville Sun building, Liquid Ginger was recommended to us as a vegetarian friendly place to have dinner. We arrived a little after five and were greeted and seated right away. The decor is modern and fun, with a large bar playing NCAA basketball. Our waiter was polite and attentive, and thankfully was well versed with the menu. Here's the problem, which is a big one: while there is a Vegetarian section on the menu, several of the dishes, including the Pad Thai and Vegetable Udon Noodles are not actually vegetarian, as they contain fish sauce. Thankfully, we asked and our waiter told us which dishes contained "just a little" fish sauce. We both opted for a Singapore Vegetable Noodle dish that he recommended, one that we did not see on the menu. My Thai Iced tea was very good, and the Singapore Vegetable Noodle dish, a curry dish with broccoli, snap peas, and carrots, was perfectly fine. The problem with the menu listing dishes that contain fish under the vegetarian section is a big one, and a deal breaker for me, so despite the excellent service and fun atmosphere, I would not be inclined to go back. read more

One of the best sushi restaurants I've been to! Quick and friendly service and great sushi. My friend recommended their foxy lady roll and it did not disappoint. My boyfriend and I also tried a salmon and avocado roll to get our feet wet with raw fish and it was deeeeliciousss! I also got a try a piece of their yellowtail and scallion roll that my friend so graciously shared with me. The chicken fried rice is was good. All the food was well portioned and left our bellies feeling full. The shrimp tempura in the foxy lady roll was nice and crunchy, a little different from other shrimp tempura I've had at other restaurants. We opted for the lunch specials - sashimi with miso soup and ginger salad (tuna, whitefish, salmon- so delicious) and my daughter did a mix of sushi and rolls- we both liked our options very much. The service was good- I did ask for low sodium soy and they did bring it to me. It is in a cute little area of downtown. He was entirely condescending and when our table asked for soy sauce he said no because he "didn't want the mess." He also said we couldn't modify a sushi roll because it would "ruin the concept of the roll." Proceeded to not listen to his customers whatsoever and would literally say no when asked for services. Our entire table was absolutely offended and disgusted by his behavior. Such an unfortunate interaction considering how good the food was. Pretty good Asian place in a cute plaza in downtown Gainesville. I've also passed by liquid ginger when downtown, and it's pretty hard to miss the creepy moon statue outside. I figured I'd finally try it and I had a pretty good experience. The ambiance of the interior was a little gloomy, but it was still cute nonetheless. The wait staff wasn't very quick despite not being busy, but I do not want to hold it against them. I ordered the pad thai and my girlfriend ordered what I believe were the udon noodles with steak. The pad thai was pretty good and on par with other thai or asian places i've had across gainesville. I thought it could have used a little more sauce, but the chicken and the vegetables were all cooked well and still tasty. The udon noodles with steak were decent and the steak and vegetables were cooked pretty well. The main dismay was that the dish was absurdly oily, such that there was a pool of oil on the bottom and the leftovers left a film of oil across the takeout container. The dish was still enjoyable, just a little less oil would've been appreciated. Nonetheless, I'd still recommend trying it out for anything pan-asian or thai fusion as I believe they have a lot to offer. The pad thai was of decent quality, although I regret not asking for it to be spicey. Additionally, a side of Miso soup and salad were also included. I haven't had the opportunity to try any of their lunch combos or meal options, but they appear to be priced incredibly competitively. I visited with two friends on a weeknight around 6:30. The restaurant was nowhere near filled and we were seated right away. Despite the three of us ordering appetizers that were brought out first, it took a long time for our main courses to be finished. This was surprising, given that the restaurant was not very busy. I ordered the liquid ginger beef, which was advertised on the menu as wok-stirred beef with ginger, white wine, and scallions. What I received was basically a bowl of wet strips of beef, mushrooms, orange bell peppers, and a whole lot of pea pods. The dish was half pea pods (see photo), which doesn't make sense, considering this was not listed on the menu as an ingredient in the dish. I'm not sure where the ginger was either (I couldn't taste it at all) and nothing in this dish had a "wok-stirred" consistency. Notably, the menu listed this dish as $13.95 but I was charged $14.95, not a big deal, but it makes me wonder what other math errors might be going on. I also got the crispy soft shell crab, which had a good flavor, but I feel slightly over-priced at $10.50. My friend ordered the garlic-soy eggplant and did not like it, although she felt the machi ice cream was delicious. Our third friend loved his miso soup and tofu pad thai. Overall, I think the entire experience was hit or miss, and I was disappointed that Liquid Ginger didn't live up to my expectations. read more

I strongly DO NOT recommend this restaurant! Over priced mediocre food. Beyond rude and possibly racist owners. I placed an order online for pick up, with plans for sit at the bar and have a drink while I waited since it's only a 3 minute walk from my hotel. Once I arrived I walked to sit at the bar, when a rude Chinese looking woman acted as if it was crime for me to sit at the bar and wait in my food....mind you the bar was empty. Then they disputed that I had placed an order online, followed by them bringing me someone else's food. Until finally they found my order in the system. Only bright spot was bartender Shelby, who was kind enough to fix me a complimentary drink and apologize for their rudeness, although she tried to play it off as a cultural difference. That's when I looked around and realized I was the only person of color in the restaurant! So again I highly advise dinners to take business elsewhere. Even when I tried to leave they then tried to make me pay for the complimentary drink. I should have just asked to a refund & left this horrible food! Hello Yelpers! We got a chance to try this place this past weekend when we were in town visiting with family. First, let me say they are truly awesome for opening the restaurant doors to us before hours of opening. They did this specifically for our family. With this said, let the review begin! Since I already covered the service, let me just add the lady taking orders certainly kept up and made sure we had everything we needed, drink refills, napkins, and even extra utensils just in case we dropped any. The ambiance of the place we welcoming and the lighting was just right. Some may say it was a wee bit dark, but for us, it was just enough. The under tones of the restaurant certainly made the place feel homely. So, A+ for that. Now, for the food! Since my cousin used to work here many moons ago, she pretty much made a lot of the recommendations. My wife ordered the Korean steak with the bento upgrade and I ordered the beef bulgogi with the bento upgrade. The bento upgrade includes soup, salad, and ice cream. Let me say, it was certainly worth it! The bento box offered up just enough food as you will see in the photos. Some small sides to cleanse your palate between bites or just to add a burst of more flavor with each bite. However you decide, you won't be disappointed. The flavors of the food were great! We started with the spinach and tofu which was great, but did have a bit of a kick to it. Still enjoyed it! They do offer your regular miso soup, which is also very good. Next was the salad. Small bowl of salad with their liquid ginger dressing (*hence the name). I could've drank a whole bottle of that. It was definitely not over powering and every bit had a taste of the dressing. Then the main course. My bulgogi had a bit of a spicy kick to it, but it was absolutely wonderful! It tastes even better letting the white rice soak up the sauce of the bulgogi. I also had a few bites of my wife's steak and holy perfection! The steak was cooked perfectly and the flavors were great! It was so good she didn't even ask for A1 or steak sauce! Lastly, ice cream! We both ordered the red bean flavor and my goodness how heavenly. It was certainly the best way to end the meal! We hope if you're in the Gainesville area that you stop in for a meal. I was really disappointed to see the low average reviews of Liquid Ginger. I'm not usually bring on Asian foods, but my fiancé loves it and introduced me to this restaurant. I haven't been disappointed any of the items that we've went. Usually, I get the sweet potato tempura roll, which are light and delicious, the krab rangoon, or the steamed pork buns. The pork buns come with their Thai peanut sauce and are very thick and filling. I attached a picture from a previous visit of the buns. I also enjoyed the krab rangoon (although I am a sucker for cheese of any kind) At this visit, I chose to get the lunch special. For about $8 without tax, you get miso soup, salad, a spring roll, and your entree. This is a lot of yummy food for such a low price. We also ordered the sesame croquettes this time. I loved the miso soup and the salad, especially the dressing. The croquettes were so unique, they came with that amazing peanut sauce. The spring roll was nice and light. As always, the pad Thai was flavorful. It was so much food that I had to get a box for home. Although this is downtown, it has a dedicated parking lot because it's part of the Sun Center. No salt, no flavor! The worst Singapore noodles I've ever eaten. The older lady that served us took forever for anything. I asked for yum yum sauce with my sushi and she literally went and took a table's drink order, got them drinks and tended to another table before bringing me sauce. My family had already eating their sushi. There is no rush and zero care. Both of our dishes were so nasty! I couldn't believe friends told us to go here. It's pretty nasty!
