Cali burrito
Chase K.

Amazing experience! Located behind Nicks this small spot packs a punch! It is a bit expensive and looks like a chipotle but the food is perfect! We got the bean and cheese burritos for our son he loved them and we split the fish burrito and Cali burrito. The fish burrito was so clean and fresh tasting, the perfect recipe for a fresh fish burrito. The Cali burrito is never my go to but I wanted to share with my wife and she likes them more, I loved it! It was so good and when you don't use or want a drop of hot sauce on a burrito you know it's perfect. The price tag is high but the burritos are fast fresh and tasty, I enjoyed it!

Loaded with delectable carnitas!

Yum! This is a great little take away joint. Located behind and adjacent to Nick's, it's full of fresh, vibrant, complimentary flavors that combine to make mouthwatering bite fulls. No seating inside, but there is a standing bar one can use and a few benches outside. Prices are really reasonable - way better than fast food for the same $$$ making Little Son's a great good-to spot for delicious food.

el jefe burrito with carne asada
Baran K.

I was so excited to try Little Son, but I have some notes having done so! We ordered the El Jefe burrito with carne asada, the nachos, and the blackened fish tacos. As far as the nachos go, I was a little nervous because the restaurant closes quite early so even though I was ordering at 5:30, I knew we probably wouldn't eat until 7:30-8 so I expressed concerns regarding the dish getting soggy. The man who received my order reassured me that he would leave the pico on the side to avoid that, but then I guess it was not communicated to the chefs so he threw on an extra bag of chips for free which was much appreciated. That being said, after "examining" the dish, I feel like soggy nachos are inevitable given that the refried beans are the base; so I would recommend a different approach to serving given that this restaurant is exclusively takeout. All that said, I really liked the nachos as far as flavor goes, so I would definitely order if I knew sogginess would no longer be an issue. The fish tacos are definitely a skip, unfortunately. There was no flavor and the fish was maybe a little overcooked? The tortillas were great though. The shining star of our meal was the burrito. This is a dish I would 1000% come back for and recommend to anyone in the area looking for a burrito. If I were only ranking the establishment by this item the rating would certainly be higher. Overall, the food is definitely not yet on par with South of Nick's but I think that the establishment is certainly new and still figuring out the waters, so I'm excited to give this another try in a few months.

Omg what a hidden gem! It's located in the back side of Nick's and by the valet. James so friendly and walked me through the menu. There are sooo many options! There was a nice vibe to the place too! I ordered the Baja Bowl with Carnitas and it didn't not disappoint (: Parking can be a challenge. But I would recommend you park closer to the front of nicks and walk. I look forward to coming back to try more! I wish there was agua fresas to complement the meal!

Service was good, nice people. Food was tasty. However I was disappointed because they forgot the guac in my burrito and also the beans. This is my fault, but I didn't realize this burrito had lettuce or else I'd taken it out because the lettuce steamed up in the burrito and was mushy. Clean, tasty and nice staff.

The food is so fresh you can really taste the quality in the meat. I'm someone that prefers chicken breast over any other type of meat and I can say that I absolutely love this place. I go to Chapman. I live in Orange so I make the drive to Newport sometimes just for this burrito the Staff is so sweet, everyone is so nice and always smiling and accommodating. You can really taste the love in the food As well for the ambience it's a very clean environment - even the soda tap stood Out to me !! 10/10

Scrumptious fish tacos including generous salsa and sauces and tasty soft tortillas! Great for lunch or a snack for two.

The sincerity in his thoughtfulness and his attention to detail left a memorable impression. I hope I spelled his name correctly. I remember he had a unique spelling. I love the ambience and the food is good enough. I dined here memorial weekend while staying across the street at Pendry. I meant to leave this review months ago but I forgot until now.

He was attentive, accommodating, and did everything he could to make our experience enjoyable. Unfortunately, this review is directed at Red O's management team. My wife and children were excited to bring me to Red O for Father's Day brunch. As a husband and father, I was looking forward to celebrating the occasion with my family. We were seated quickly, which was a great start, but my disappointment began the moment I looked at the menu. There was absolutely nothing special about the Father's Day brunch menu. It was the same basic brunch menu that appears to be offered on any regular weekend. I was hoping to enjoy a quality steak, perhaps a ribeye or filet, as a Father's Day treat. Instead, the only steak options available were a carne asada dish and an oversized surf-and-turf featuring a massive tomahawk and lobster tail designed to feed multiple people. I asked our waiter why there wasn't a ribeye or filet offered for Father's Day. His response shocked me. He explained that for Mother's Day, Red O had offered an elaborate all-you-can-eat champagne brunch complete with carving stations, multiple meat selections, and a much more elevated experience. I know he meant no harm by sharing that information, but hearing it made the situation even more disappointing. To his credit, our waiter went above and beyond. He spoke with the chef and somehow arranged for me to receive a steak that wasn't even on the menu. That level of service is the only reason this review isn't a 1-star rating. My frustration is entirely with management. Why was Mother's Day treated like a major celebration while Father's Day received no special attention whatsoever? Fathers work hard, sacrifice for their families, and deserve to be celebrated too. I'm not suggesting Mother's Day should be diminished in any way, but the contrast between the two experiences was impossible to ignore. What made this especially disappointing was having to hide my feelings from my family. My wife and kids were genuinely excited to treat me to brunch at Red O, and I didn't want to ruin the occasion for them. But the reality is that I left feeling overlooked and undervalued by a restaurant that clearly knows how to create special holiday experiences when it chooses to. Red O missed a tremendous opportunity to celebrate fathers. Instead of a memorable Father's Day experience, we were given an ordinary brunch menu and the feeling that the holiday simply wasn't important enough to warrant any extra effort. That is incredibly disappointing.

Mexican sounded good, so I decided to check it out. Great Mex is located right on the main strip on the Balboa Peninsula. It's very much a hole-in-the-wall space - with a super simple/casual set up. The space isn't large - you order your food at the counter and then there are a few tables where you can sit. I was lucky that the place was empty when I arrived - shortly after I sat to eat a bunch of people came and filled the tables. They have a good variety of Mexican dishes - nothing too outrageous, mostly things familiar to the American palate. I decided to get the two taco combo dish and chose al pastor as my protein. The tacos were super tasty - generously filled with two being enough if you're hungry but not starving. The dish came with rice and refried beans which were also good. They carry Mexican Coke, so I got one of those to finish the meal off. Service was great - they were super friendly and the food was ready relatively quickly. They also went above and beyond - two people in my party got fountain beverages but they noticed they were too watered down and were quick to replace the syrup and provide us new beverages. Overall, I had a good meal at Great Mex - definitely a standout on Balboa Peninsula.

They also had tortillas which you could eat with butter that was my first time trying that. The salsa was super fresh and not spicy at all which is usually my main concern haha. The burrito was super delicious. the carnitas were cooked really well and not overdone, I added rice, sour cream, and pico de gallo to mine. I liked how you could modify it to your preference. I have to commend our server Rocky!!!! He is the best, he was super communicative to our table and always made sure to refill our water and come by with napkins without us even having to flag him down! He works super hard, was attentive to not only our table but to everyone! I saw him at every table making sure they were all being taken care of to the highest regard. To Rocky: Thank you so much, this dinner would not have been the same without you as our server. Overall super fantastic restaurant, food came out all together in a timely manner, super well made and lots of love put into their restaurant! I know lots of places in Costa Mesa have limited parking space but this restaurant had a really big lot and we were able to easily find parking. Throughout the meal, we felt repeatedly rushed. Plates were cleared quickly, and it seemed like we were being encouraged to leave before we had finished enjoying our celebration. The most disappointing part came when the bill arrived. Our server, Mercedes, told us that the tip was not included. After my mom paid and left an 18% tip, Mercedes again commented on the gratuity and stated that it wasn't the suggested amount. My mom had to explain that she had intentionally left the amount she felt was appropriate. We were genuinely surprised that a server would openly question a customer's gratuity, especially after receiving an 18% tip. Afterward, it also appeared that the situation was being discussed with coworkers within view of our table, which made us feel even more uncomfortable. I understand that restaurant work is demanding and everyone can have difficult days. However, no guest celebrating a special occasion should leave feeling rushed, criticized for the tip they chose to leave, or uncomfortable because of an interaction with their server. It's unfortunate because we were looking forward to celebrating a meaningful occasion as a family, and the service left a lasting negative impression. I hope management takes this feedback as an opportunity to coach staff so future guests have a better experience.
