Stopped in here on my way to visit my Dad, and wow -- this little corner spot off Newport Blvd/55 delivered. Costa Mesa/N NB is a battlefield of restaurants, so standing out isn't easy... but these folks are hitting all cylinders. It's semi-hidden behind a big Verizon switch box in a tiny strip mall. classic underdog story. 1st Star: Service - driendly, welcoming, the kind of guy who makes you feel like you're a regular even when you're not. Huge win. 2nd Star: Menu Variety + Prices: Shockingly big menu for a small shop, and everything's priced like they actually want you to come back. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert -- it's all there. 3rd Star: Free Chips & Salsa (Yes, Even A La Carte): If heaven has a waiting room, they're serving chips and salsa. Automatic bonus points. 4th Star: Mexican Food "All Boxes Checked". Me = Beef Crispy Taco (VG) & Sope (Good) but they also have burritos, bowls, plates, enchiladas, chilaquiles -- classics plus some fun extras. Everything looked fresh, clean, and made with pride. 5th Star: Local Vibes: You can feel this is locally owned. Quick, clean, convenient, and delicious! Stopped in and tried a burrito - the tortilla was so light and fresh, it was packed with fresh ingredients and was large enough to share. They offer complimentary chips, and a delicious salsa bar with several different options. Prices are reasonable and their staff was super friendly. The food is bland and overpriced for the quality and amount. The chicken torta was mostly bread, very little meat. Solid place for reasonably priced Mexican food! Tacos are $3.50 ($4.50 shrimp) and most burritos are under $10. I got a taco combo plate ($10.25) with two tacos, rice and beans. I chose blackened fish and chicken soft tacos, which are topped with onions and cilantro. These tacos were loaded, the tortillas barely able to contain all of the ingredients. My husband got the blackened fish burrito ($11). It was big, but had a lot of rice and beans. They have a salsa bar that you can help yourself to. La Laguna Mex Grill is very close to the OC Fair and would make a great dining alternative to the overpriced fair food. read more

Was on the hunt for a California Burrito and I found this restaurant on my Yelp feed. Yay yelp!! Had the opportunity to stop by today and it's a cute spot! The burritos are reasonably priced and you self serve your sauces and drinks. There is no drive through. My burrito was tightly wrapped and full. La Laguna has replaced El Mesquitito Grill. But don't fret--the food is still delicious! To be honest, the food tasted exactly the same to me (which is a good thing) I tried a Quesabirria, Carne Asada Nachos, and the Super California Burrito. We typically order the food ahead on the phone and it's usually ready in about 15 minutes or less. The salsas tasted exactly the way I remember El Mesquititios tasting. Pretty good! The Quesabirria and Nachos were good. Nothing too special, but still tasty. The most delicious item was DEFINITELY the Super California Burrito. A stomach bomb but still so delicious. Breakfast burritos are worth the price and is very tasty! They have a morning breakfast burrito special from 9am-11am that is $7, but not including the Laguna Burrito option. Amazing portions for the price! The amount of meat you get is double what you get anywhere else. Every order comes with chips I think? (We ordered the birria tacos, carne asada taco, and al pastor) They also have a self serve salsa bar. Birria tacos: 7/10 good but not great. Carne asada taco: 8/10 really good! Al pastor taco: 8/10 I loved the spiciness of the taco, it was just right! I think all the tacos were really good and really filling. 2 is more than enough for a full meal bc of the amount of meat there is! This place is tiny but the food is really good. We ordered Al Pastor Tacos, a breakfast burrito, a blackened fish taco, and a kids quesadilla plate. The Al Pastor was not traditional but was still tasty. The kids ate all of their food. The staff also was very friendly. read more

One of the worst breakfast burritos I have had in a very long time.. no scrambled eggs more like fried and burnt. The most overwhelming taste is the burnt egg. It has no flavor and I can barely taste any meat in it. I used to come here before it was sold to the new owners and the quality of food is crazy noticeable. Their California burrito was one of the best around and after this experience I'm scared to try it with the new ownership. I will never go back for a breakfast burrito which is unfortunate because they used to be really good. read more

Wish more people would be honest in their reviews of this place. Quaint and quiet, no parking, decent staff and customer service. Prices OK for food, ridiculous for drinks. As for the flavor of the food, I am not sure who keeps eating here and telling other people the food tastes good, but wow, I could not be more appalled at the absolute lack of flavor in the birria burrito I had. I can understand if maybe the rice or beans is slightly under seasoned, maybe the meat on some occasions. I get it, no one's perfect.. But for the entire burrito to have absolutely no flavor is something I haven't encountered yet. To make it worse, the "extra hot" and "hot" sauces were anything but! The sauces were like water with food coloring. I will never be back here, and I hope no one else goes back until they learn how to make food properly. One of the worst experiences I've ever had. All that said, the lady at the counter was nice and the food came out quickly. Place seemed clean and well taken care of, so, my gripe is with the food, not the management or service. read more

This quaint establishment is hidden in the corner of a plaza with the coffee behemoth of Starbucks. Don't let its stature deter you, for the burrito is hefty! I called upon a burrito of the breakfast variety, aptly named for its birthplace - La Laguna Special. I've had just about every taco, Gordita, and burrito on their menu. My personal favorite on their menu is the Shredded Beef Gordita. They do a solid Asada taco and my burrito of choice is Carnitas. However, if you're ever there for breakfast - the Laguna Burrito is the way to go. The Birria is just okay. Huge sides of rice and beans and great daily specials. Saturday and Sunday mornings are the best with Gordita Saturday and Breakfast Burrito Sunday. Chips with every meal! The staff is all super cool - family owned small business. I've conversed with everyone on the team and they all "pass the vibe check". The cook is the same guy everytime I've been (dozens of times) which ensures consistency! The location itself is a tiny little joint with minimal parking. They share a parking lot with Starbucks, a Bistro, and Wig Shop. The building consists of 4 tables and a high bar with about 5 stools. We went here based on good reviews, but were disappointed. First, shared tiny parking lot of 10-min-only parking was full, so we had to park around the corner and hope we didn't get towed. Most of what we ordered was okay but wasn't epic. I had high hopes for the Birria tacos, but they came without sopa(?), and when I asked, they said sopa only came with the quesabirria, but they capitulated and gave me a small cup complimentary - nice. I might not have received it without the help of our Spanish-speaking friend who was with us. However, it was a thick molé-type sauce rather than the usual highly seasoned beef broth. It could have used more seasoning. The Birria taco meat itself was good, but could have been great, but again was a bit bland. There was no way that the meat was cooked in the sauce it was served with. The chicken burrito was okay, but the chicken was under-seasoned, overshredded and made the whole thing a mushy, hard-to-eat mess. Asking our Latino friend about his tortas, he gave them a 3/5 and said they looked great, but the meats were under-seasoned. Again, everything presented well, the food just didn't live up to its appearance. This is more a take-out, dine-in space is very limited. PS - The electronic menu boards here couldn't contain the entire menu, so the menus were swapping out about every 2 seconds, just long enough to be frustrating. Owner should add at least 2 sec to the current rotation. Ask for a paper menu at the register if you need it. read more

Today was our first time trying this place, and believe me, it won't be our last!! We absolutely LOVED the food! We tried the Carne Asada Burrito which was the best one I've ever had! It was the perfect ratio of beans to steak, and the flavor was great and it was not greasy at all! The salsas were delicious. We tried them all! We also had the Laguna Burrito (breakfast) & the Machaca Burrito, both yummy and full of flavor. We had chips too, fresh and crispy. The owner chatted with us for awhile and was super helpful and friendly. I wish him the best! Try this place, you won't regret it. You'll be so happy you did!! Oh, the prices are very reasonable, which today, is rare. Anyway, needless to say, we'll be back soon, and we'll try the tacos too!! read more
