So this place is a little hard to find not only because everything in this china town area has signs that are 100% in Chinese.. And I'm not Chinese so I had to look through the windows to see what they were selling.. Lol (a lot of these places sell random crap..) Anyways, this place is on the SIDE of the building on 57th street with a red sign and it's actually in English! If you're ever in BK. Come HERE! There's not many vietnamese joints in the city and harder to find bahn mi. Came here numerous of times for lunch and practically tried every sandwich they had. What differences them from the others is their baguette and size (cause it matters, haha). They toast it and it adds that extra crunch in every bite. Bursting in flavour. This Vietnamese-based restaurant is quite small but has been around for a few years since early 2016-17. I ordered their #1 and it was yummy. The bread was perfectly toasted, major plus. It would have been even better if there was just a little more meat and veggies though. I would have given them another star for that because it really was good. Like others have said, it is a very small shop and I agree with it being one of the better banh mi places in NYC, although it still isn't as good as the west coast. It's also only $4! The warm and toasty and crunchy chicken sandwich... I missed you so much!! Ever since I moved to Queens from Brooklyn, I've been missing the viet sandwich from this place. There were a few times where hubby bought it for me from on his drive home from Brooklyn, but it was too soggy and not toasty and warm by the time it gets to me, so it didn't taste the same=( This place is always very busy and they run out of bread fast, many times, you can't even get it in the late afternoon because they sold out of the bread, so come early or call first before you make the trip. read more

Pretty darn good and consistent. I've been going to this place for the past 10 years and have consistently like the fresh ingredients and toasted crispy light bread and the flavorful meets packed into Vietnamese sandwiches here. I normally also get the #1 and #3, and they have never failed me as a quick to go lunch that I brought to everything from my middle school field trips to lunch at my first job. Although the prices have been climbing, the sandwiches are still well worth the value, especially if you want a fresher or less greasy alternative to all of the other food around 8th Avenue. Came in here after a doctor's appointment and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the Bahn Mi here. I think it's the best I've had in the 8th Ave neighborhood. The place is a small hole in the wall that only has about 4 bar stools in front of a wall next to the beverage fridge. The ladies that work there weren't pushy about needing to order something right away and were nice. The sandwiches are all decently priced and comes with a good variety to choose from. I ended up ordering the #1 and thoroughly enjoyed it. The bread had a good crunch to it and the pork/pate was so delicious. Finally, Yelp has gotten to this restaurant too. I live around the corner from this restaurant and have the good fortune to be able to eat these sandwiches every week or so for the last 2 years. Please take a look at the photos I've posted here. These are very very good sandwiches for 3.75 a piece. Do not purchase these sandwiches after 2 PM if you can help it as the bread becomes too tough. Before then, the bread is excellent and stacks up well with Baoguette's "gourmet" baguette in Manhattan. The most unique sandwich at Thanh Da may be their sardine sandwich which is their non-meat alternative for vegetarians. It's not a particularly Vietnamese sandwich and perhaps their least "authentic". However, in a small taste test of me and my friends with Baoguette's catfish sandwich, it was the clear winner. Thanh Da II's ham and bbq pork sandwich at $3.75 also stands up to Baoguette's pork terrine sandwich at $5. The difference is mostly in how the spiciness is created within Thanh Da II's sandwich. They use jalapeno peppers as opposed to the less authentic Sriracha that Baoguette uses. Sriracha is a Vietnamese condiment but I've never seen it used on a Vietnamese sandwich. This tends to also have people saying that Thanh Da II's sandwich is fresher and has a more interesting combination of vegetables. However, the preparation that goes into the vegetables for both Thanh Da II and Baoguette looks fairly similar. They both put a lot of work into cutting the vegetables correctly. And oh yeah, unlike the first poster, Ray M., I'm actually Asian and my wife is actually Vietnamese . I don't know how it helps but if he wants to engage in a "who is more authentic" arms race, I'm pretty confident I can win. ;) And don't forget to try the avocado, papaya and soursop milk shakes here -- they're excellent! This is a quick, to-go kind of spot. They offer drinks and other Vietnamese snacks, but most importantly, they serve banh mi. I had my first banh mi in New York from Thanh Da and it did not disappoint! I got the #1 ($5) with the various Vietnamese cold cuts. The sandwich came out hot and toasty with lots of filling. My favorite part of the #1 is the small chunks of caramelized pork. They add great texture and a depth of flavor. I grew up on homemade Vietnamese food, and let me tell you, this place feels like home! It's small, but think of it as cozy. Everything you order can be pretty much be customized. The waitresses will warn you if a dish is too spicy and constantly ask you if you're enjoying your meal! Don't expect this when it's crowded though. Speaking of crowd, it's always crowded...morning coffee, afternoon lunch and late night dinner :[. The banh mi here is DELICIOUS and toasted to perfection! The crust is crunchy and the inside is buttery and filled with four types of meat plus pickled turnip, for 4 bucks, that's a steal. I'm not too big on pho, but the other noodle bowls are amazing. My personal favorites are bun bo hue and bo kho. I can go on and on about how great this place is, but to each their own. Everybody has their own taste and i can't speak for everyone. Finished driving lesson. Two hour break before road test today. Needed food. Brooklyn Chinatown = lots of food choices. Hard to choose. Went to yelp, see what's nearby. Shannon Z. & Sarah L. rated this place. Place has decent amount of reviews to reach 4 Stars currently. Seems legit! Having a viet sandwich for the day doesn't seem like a bad idea at all. The place itself is pretty cramped. I wouldn't recommend sitting there. It's more like waiting space as you wait for your sandwich (and of course, it'd take 3-7 minutes for them to make it; don't know why I always expect it so fast, but it feels like a long long time). There's a bunch of snacks & drinks to check out while you wait. To keep it safe and get the best thoughts of this place, I went for the Number 1. I think it was a combination of ham, some other meat, and bbq pork, plus pickled veggies. Bread was a little more crispy than I liked it, but that's really all preference. The sandwich was delicious. It's about 3/4 the size of a Subway foot long. For $4.50, it was a nice light lunch to keep you going for the day. Minus 1 star: -Good sandwich, but I think I preferred my favorite one in CT. Yes this place is convenient and this is the only reason i even go here. But cashier guy is INCREDIBLY rude in person and phone call to the point where im guessing he doesn't even want business. It might shock some ppl here because of all the good ratings. And I dont usually rate businesses but I'm mad everytime i think about my interactions with him. Been coming to TDII ever since 10 or so years ago. They used to have the best banh mi's around for the best price. My all time favorite #1 would be stuffed to the brim with meats, encased in a hot and toasty baguette for the price of less than $3. Nowadays, the prices are rising and the meats are diminishing. I recommend the #1 which includes traditional pate, ham and some bbq pork to make things a little interesting. I had a craving for a viet sandwich and my friend recommended this place. At first when I saw this place from the exterior, I thought it was a grocery store with all the snacks stacked up everywhere. Thanh Da II has the best banh mis that I have ever had. I prefer them over Ba Xuyen's banh mi's, which seems to be the more popular vendor in the neighborhood of them. Thanh Da has the most delicious french baguettes that they use to make their sandwiches, and they toast them so that they have just the right texture. The fillings have the right balance of meat, vegetables, and pate. The staff in here is friendly and attentive. There are only three stools to sit on, which make for a challenge if you are out and about in the winter and want to eat in. read more

I got a BBQ Pork Bahn Mi today, as well as an egg tart. When I pulled my sandwich out of its glassine bag, half of the bottom piece of bread cracked and gave way. The Bread ended up on my floor and the fillings, but the pork and top slice and half of the bottom remained. I was not happy. Thahn da off 8th serves a far better sandwich. Recently I had a few of their new egg tarts. Which used to be the best in the borough, as this was the last place to spend the extra dime for puff pastry instead of trying (and always failing) to make their own... I had a craving for a banh mi just now and went in here to get one. Hadn't been here for about a year or so and the price is now $4.50 and $4.75 for the BBQ banh mi. And they don't take pennies. I took out 5 pennies and got this attitude from this chubby guy behind the counter. When I got home, I notice the bread was a bit over done. But it wasn't that big of an issue, but they really had slim down on ingredients. Very little of everything. I have to say, I was disappointed. Not just this place but a lot of banh mi places had slim down on ingredients and raised their prices really high. For that price, I rather go get a pho or other rich dishes else where. Crunchy fragrant bread and the right amount of almost everything except that yummy patê! My favorite place to call in, chat with the guy who speaks like 3 dialects of Chinese, Vietnamese, English and another language that he pulled out of his magical brain and get my sandwich piping hot and crunchy and delicious.
