We were seated right away and had to order through a tablet. Al la carte hotpot - a little overpriced but best to come with large groups to share. They charged us extra for the sauce station and fruits/side dishes. Overall - it was good but wouldn't be my first option in downtown San Mateo for hotpot

We went there on Valentine's Day. There was a line, like pretty much everywhere that day, but the wait wasn't too bad. We ordered mild spicy and mushroom hot pot, very light and delicious beer in a whole jar just for $10. I also tried a coconut drink, which was tasty and definitely worth it. The place itself looked fine. Nothing particularly special or memorable in terms of atmosphere. Overall, I'd say it's a solid spot for hot pot: not the best, but definitely not bad. If you're looking for variety, it's worth trying.

Had an awesome lunch here on a Sunday. Not busy so had time to enjoy the big space. They have a sauce, snack and fruit bar but had to pay extra $3.50/person. Totally worth it. The orange and winter melon were sweet, the sesame ball was soft and fresh. Tried the tomato and house special pork bone - both were delicious. Ordered the all beef platter and vege platter. Only thing is, the meat slices are so thin. But everything tasted great.

The lunch special doesnt come with broth and veggies. So literally youre just eating raw meat. the service is bad, waited half an hr and no food came.

My friend and I came here last week for dinner . We had come really early on a Saturday so the place was pretty empty . Even by 7pm there were still a few tables open. Liuyishou is not ayce but the quality of the meat / presentation is very nice . I also liked how they have different types of broths that I haven't seen in other places . You have to order on the iPad but they don't have pictures of every item which makes it hard to order some items. We got a plain broth and a spicy broth . The spicy broth is very tasty and I liked it . I also really liked the sauce bar, it comes with many sides like seaweed salad and octopus salad . Total was $200 after tax and tip !

I'd recommend this place as a comfortable place for a group. There is plenty of seating and large tables to accommodate large parties. The meat quality is at level for what you pay for. The bone broth and spicy broth is really tasty! Although we found some plastic in the soup (on accident), the server replaced everything and handled the problem very professionally and thoughtfully. I've had better quality hot pot with more variety, so I would say this place isn't the best nor the worst. I wouldn't mind coming back if I am eating with a large group but be sure to get a table before 6/6:30 to avoid the waitlist.

Came for lunch with my friend for all you can eat $19.99. It's not very busy on weekday lunch. Only about 3 other tables, in the middle of the restaurant has sauce table and some appetizers. Cucumbers, chicken feet's, peanuts etc Once we ask about the meal waitress mention this meal does not include soup and vegetables only meat. I'm not sure if it make sense as it is a hot pot restaurant. We ordered the pork bone soup and the rest are meats. Their meat are fatty but not bad, around 5 piece each plate. Shrimp are fresh which is a good thing as well. Just the promotion doesn't make sense and the staffs are not very friendly.

My friend recommended this place after I told her we were craving hot pot. I'm a big fan of the overall quality of the food here. I have to highlight the sauce bar, because it had everything I wanted to make my sauce and then some. My favorite ingredient was the youtiao or chinese donut. So yummy and crispy even after dipping it into the broth. We came in on a Sunday afternoon and it wasn't too busy in the restaurant. Service was very fast and it was a great place to have lunch. Like most hot pot restaurants, the ambiance was catered to groups. Looking forward to coming back again soon.

We visited Liuyishou Hotpot in San Mateo for their lunchtime AYCE promotion and were very disappointed with the overall experience. The place is not the cleanest and a bit awkward layout but it had cute decorations throughout. The AYCE option is quite limited because you're only allowed two types of meat, and unfortunately the meat quality was extremely poor. I eat hot pot often, and this was by far the lowest-quality meat I've encountered at a hot pot restaurant. The cuts were tough and unpleasant, to the point of being difficult to eat. The sauce bar is small and poorly maintained. Items such as the fruits and pickled sides frequently ran out and were not replenished in a reasonable amount of time leaving a lot of people getting to the bar and leaving empty handed back to their seats. Service was very slow throughout the meal, from ordering to receiving items at the table. The long wait times made the experience drag on and took away from the enjoyment of the meal. We also ordered a few items outside of the AYCE, and they were overpriced for both the quality and portion size. Considering the price, service, and food quality, this restaurant does not live up to its rating. The promotion feels misleading sure it brings you in, but once seated, the quality and service do not meet expectations. There are far better hot pot options in San Mateo and the Bay Area in general. Definitely skip this place.

We always notice people waiting outside, so as San Mateo locals, Liuyishou Hot Pot has been on our list to try for a while. Our go-to hot pot spot is only a few blocks away, but we decided to switch it up since downtown has so many great restaurants. We got there a few minutes before 11:30 AM on a Sunday, ended up first in line, and another family joined shortly after. Prices are a bit higher than some other hot pot spots in the area. This is not AYCE, though I think they offer a lunch AYCE option on weekdays. Ordering is done through a tablet, which was easy and straightforward. The four of us shared one split pot and chose two broths: the House Special (medium spicy) and the House Pork Bone with Herbs. The spicy broth was the favorite for my dad and brother, while I stuck mostly to the pork bone base. I thought both were good, though the pork broth didn't stand out as much as I hoped and was on the plain side. We ordered their signature beef and lamb platter, which comes on a wooden ring around the pot. It's definitely what draws the crowds in and is definitely a lot of meat. On top of that, we added two plates of prime beef, egg fish balls, tofu, and rice. Meat quality was decent, but the egg fish balls were the real winner for me. They were creamy, flavorful, and honestly some of the best I've had. The sauce bar is an extra $3.50 per person. It has a nice mix of sauces, fruit, and small sides. Nothing over the top, but enough to find a combo you like. Tip to future diners: double-check your bill. We were charged for an extra rice by mistake. Overall, my family had a good experience here. The spicy broth was a standout, the egg fish balls are a must-order, and the presentation of the meat platter is fun to see in person. I still think there are a few better hot pot spots nearby, but I am glad we tried it and would recommend giving it a shot if you are in the area and curious.

This hot pot place exceeded my expectations! What blew me away more was their amazing lunch deal! They have hot pot combos for one that are under $20! You get your own personalized pot, a plate of meat, a 9 compartment box of veggies and other sides for the hot pot, along with a bowl of rice. It's the perfect amount, especially at lunch time.  We came for dinner, but couldn't help to share that information because that's too good of a deal. We HAD to order the "ring of meat" only because it looked cool for a photo, but it turned out to be a good choice. It was actually half beef and half lamb, which was plentiful on its own. Quality here is great and I loved their DIY sauce bar which also offered small appetizers and fruit. If you love hot pot, definitely add this to your bookmarks. What we ordered: * Liu's Beef & Lamb Platter (the "ring of meat") * Seafood Platter * Hand-made Noodles

Great place for hotpot! Came here on a weekend and really enjoyed it! I got the coconut chicken and pork soup combo and it was amazing. The coconut chicken is a MUST try - it's a unique flavor that I don't see too often. They also use fresh coconut and bring it to your table. Portion size is also perfect! We got 3 meats and it was a good amount. The sauce bar is a bit pricey, but there's lots of options including side dishes and fruits. Service was decent and we were seated pretty fast. It's mostly self service since all the ordering is done through an iPad. Inside is very nice and well decorated. I'd definitely come back here again!

Meat Ring, pork bine broth, and house special ("Medium")

Downtown San Mateo has hot pot places like 7-Elevens, one on every corner. With so many options, it was hard to choose but I'm not sure if I'm glad I went with Liuyishou. Especially with AYCE options abound. We tried the pork bone broth, which was pretty plain tasting and standard for hot pot. But the "medium" house special was just way too spicy for anyone to enjoy. It had a whole 0.5 inch layer of what I assume is leaf lard which only heightens the intensity of the Szechuan peppercorns. After scooping that oil layer out, the broth was much more palatable but the oiliness was just not for me. "Medium" spice was face numbing, lip plumping spicy - definitely not for the faint of heart. The sauce bar was also an extra cost that you can't opt out of. You would think paying for each item individually would mean it would be much better quality. But, it wasn't. The only real difference is I felt service was very quick compared to AYCE places. We ended up with a $170 (before tax and tip) tab for four people. Ultimately, I don't think the meat quality or broth is worth it when you could do AYCE for less and eat to your hearts content.

I came with a friend and got seated immediately. In terms of service, there wasn't too much interaction with the staff since you order via QR code, but they will come over and put your receipt on the surface of the table and check off your items as they bring them out. Initially, my friend and I thought they grilled the skewers on the plate at the table; however, it comes pre-cooked and grilled, and the plate itself is there to keep your food warm. I looked under, and it's "powered" by a bunch of tea candles. Between both of us, we ordered some skewers of enoki mushrooms (which was my favorite, super tender and flavorful), some beef skewers, a beef skewer with lychee (super unique), beef tongue (a bit tough for my liking), and chicken skin (extremely crispy, somewhat hard to pull off the skewer). I want to call out again the beef with lychee since this was an item I do not see often. It was interesting because the beef was seasoned well and when combined with the lychee, it added a refreshing note; however, the lychee's textural profile was similar to fatty beef, which personally threw me off a bit as someone who tends not to like fatty cuts (if you are a fan though, you'll like this). Overall, this spot is an okay place to check out if you're in the area. Parking in this area of San Mateo is limited, but the restaurant itself has a lot of tables, so it can be good for bigger parties.

Curry Beef Stew I've never had Curry beef stew before, prefer chicken, curry, but for some odd reason, I decided to order this dish. It was underwhelming and I won't order it again. The Curry sauce itself was OK but the big long pieces of beef were somewhat gross, lots of fat. They added plenty of slices to onions and a few pieces of green pepper and Julienned carrots, but that's about it for being called a stew. So I learned my lesson by not sticking to my usual order, and won't order wonton soup or curry beef stew again.

What I mean is that if you happen to be in the area then it's fine to dine here but probably not worth coming here just for the restaurants as there are alternatives outside of San Mateo where you don't have pay for parking. However the reason I gave 4 stars is that they give you enough meat on the noodle to make it slightly better deal even though everything in the Bay Area is overpriced. The service is really efficient and friendly enough. The restaurant is small and long) do I wouldn't suggest larger parties.
