I chose to celebrate my birthday here with my friends Sunday at 1 pm. My friend called to make a reservation for party of five. We received a warm greeting as we entered. Water poured and menus handed out. A basket of bread to the table. The staff was very patient with us as we had one person who was running late. Pros: * while we waited we started with calamari and yuca fries. * I had a great pisco sour cocktail. * my friends decided to do family style dining - they ordered three items. * I decided to order my own dish as it was my birthday, and didn't feel like sharing. The seafood stew tomato based was excellent. So much seafood - mussels, clams, shrimp, prawns, squid, and a crab leg. Cons: * my friends also ordered the seafood stew tomato based. After a while they asked about it. Lost in translation. Their order never placed with the kitchen. For dessert we got the alfajores. A sandwich cookie with a layer of dulce de leche. It was very sweet. Would have been better with a strong cup of coffee. I also received a complimentary scoop of ice cream in honor of my birthday. There are some parking spaces in front of the restaurant. We circled around the block. Ended up on the same side of the street but about one long block away. I was skeptical when my coworker mentioned Peruvian food because I've BEEN to Peru for two weeks,and didn't like the food there. This place really changed my mind. If this place was in the Mall it would dominate. This place is a couple blocks away, kind of hidden on a main row. Coworker got the Tallarin Salteado which was basically a steak spaghetti and she liked it a lot. They give you complimentary bread, just beware the green avocado one is spicy! It does NOT look spicy, but it is! I got the La Ronda Plate which had 3 items: combination plate of fried calamari, fish ceviche and seafood rice or seafood fried rice....everything was really good and fresh. It had flavor and really was cooked well, unlike the seafood and rice I had in Peru where my complaint was no flavor. Heck, go here and it will save you the plane fare! Got their Chicha Morada, pricey at $6.95 with purple corn pineapple & spices, I would probably not get this again because it was kind of like a bland drink to me...instead I would get their passionfruit drink next time. La Ronda in San Mateo is a great find! The service was genuinely friendly and attentive from start to finish, and the menu is impressively diverse with something for everyone (though vegetarians may have fairly limited options). The restaurant was a little more than half full when we had dinner there on a Friday night and the ambiance is lively but not loud. We ordered a variety of dishes and everything was delicious, with very generous portion sizes that left us so full (with leftovers to spare). The ceviches were bright, limey, and tart in the best way, the chicken wings were crispy and juicy, the papa rellena was especially interesting (almost like an inside-out, deep-fried baked potato) with olives and raisins that were a pleasant surprise, and the lomo saltado was as comforting and dependable as it usually is. To top it all off, they even offer Peruvian beers, which was the perfect way to wash everything down. Delicious Peruvian restaurant in San Mateo with friendly service and generous portions. Many reviews have mentioned the odd location but it's fine with easy parking. The inside is bright and welcoming. We tried a few dishes and enjoyed them all- Yuka Frita-crispy yuka fries served with a creamy yellow sauce but they're delicious dipped in the house jalapeño sauce Papa Rellena-large fried mashed potato ball filled with ground beef, eggs, olives and raisins. Really tasty Los Traviesos-three ways of red snapper ceviche. Very generous portion. Light, refreshing and fresh fish. The sauces were similar and citrusy Arres Con Pollo-this half chicken served with rice and cilantro sauce was really good and I liked that the chicken was defined and very tender Alfajores-delicious melt in your mouth cookies with a luscious caramel filling. Came here with my friends to celebrate my early birthday. Located on a very busy street next to the Shell gas station, there are about five parking spaces for the 3-4 storefronts. Other than that, you'll have to look for parking in the residential areas starting a block away. We got the yucca fries, beef empanadas and ceviche traditional to start. The ceviche was good, as were the yucca fries. The empanada was ok. For entrees (big portions!), we ordered the lomo saltado, the pollo a la parilla and the picante de camarones. The lomo saltado arrived as chicken and we told them we ordered beef. The server came out to question us and pointed out he wrote chicken on his bill, but they replaced it and pretty quickly too. I'm glad we did because for me, that was the best dish of the meal. The three of us agreed the pollo was dry and could have used some kind of condiment/sauce. We were concerned the shrimp would come out too spicy as indicated on the menu, but it was very mild even for me who has a low tolerance. I enjoyed the sauce in that dish over rice! For dessert, we ordered the corn pudding, which is a traditional Peruvian dessert none of us had ever had. Not sure what we expected, but it was like eating fruit jelly straight up. We did not care for this, sorry. We got a complimentary bread pudding for my birthday and that was much better. All in all, a decent meal experience, but given the location and average food, I don't have La Ronda at the top of the list for a revisit. read more

We have driven by this restaurant tons of times before and were pleasantly surprised to find a sweet little restaurant with delicious food, attentive staff, and a nice interior space. My husband and I split a house salad, chiccharon de pollo and pescado a lo macho. It was just the right amount for the two of us. Salad was refreshing and a nice complement to the meal. The fried chicken wings were fresh with a nice lime sauce and onions/tomatoes. The seafood and tomato sauce was the highlight and definitely won over my husband. We asked 4 different times for the chips! We packed up our leftovers and waited for a bag for our food and the chips come! You see that we packed up our leftovers, WHY would you bring out the plate of chips?! We asked them for another box for the chips. We basically sat around, taking up space, waiting for chips, while the restaurant was hustlin'! It WAS Mother's Day weekend, but not the day itself. A true hidden gem for great Peruvian food! My family is Peruvian and have tried basically every Peruvian restaurant in the area and this is one of the most authentic. The traditional ceviche was fresh and delicious, the fish quality was great. I had the lomo saltado and it was delicious. My only note would be that I wish the steak was more tender for the price of the plate, but other than that flavor was perfect. Overall, I would highly recommend La Ronda and look forward to coming back! read more

We made last-minute reservations because, as usual, we couldn't decide what to eat. We had driven by this spot many times and always wanted to try it, and we finally found the perfect opportunity to do so. Service was a little slow, but it seemed like everything was being made from scratch--at least I'd like to think so. The food was delicious, and although the prices were steep, the portions were generous. I'd recommend ordering one plate to share along with a few appetizers, so you can sample more from the menu. Went to La Ronda for lunch on Tuesday. It was empty when we reached at 12.30 but later several groups came in. They have limited vegetarian options. We got the Papa A La Huancaina (vegetarian) as a starter. This was ok. I got the Tallarin Saltado de Vegetales (vegetarian) which was quite good and flavorful. My husband got the Lomo Saltado with chicken. He didn't like it - the chicken and the fries tasted slightly off. He got the Pisco Sour cocktail and I got the Chicha Morada which were both good. Came on a Wednesday night with a friend. The interior was beautifully decorated, and the service was excellent. The waitstaff were very attentive and friendly, which made the experience even better. In addition to the outstanding service, the food was absolutely delicious. We ordered a chicken dish, the La Rhonda plate, and the chicha morada. Everything was full of flavor, but I especially enjoyed the La Rhonda plate, as it's a great option if you want to sample a variety of dishes. While both food items were great, the drink really stood out! The chicha morada was incredibly flavorful and not overly sweet. I highly recommend trying it when you visit! I was aware of La Ronda Restaurant when they opened early 2023, and boy do I regret not going then because what I thought could be a neighborhood go-to turned into just another expensive generic white cloth Peruvian place. One of the dishes we ordered is $10 more expensive than what it was under two years ago... inflation isn't supposed to be that exponential. Most prices are $5 more. And while I'm okay with paying a premium on good food, I find better value and dishes elsewhere in this area - even at luxe places at Hillsdale. If I didn't think about the price, I think La Ronda is middle of the road based on the other Peruvian places I've eaten at in the bay. We were started off with complimentary cold bread, butter, and a spicy green chili sauce that gives painful tongue tingles. I'm surprised by the amount of people raving about the green sauce as it was REALLY spicy, and I eat a lot of spicy food. There were only two tables dining when we went for an early dinner, and the ambience was very quiet. - Anticucho De Corazon Our first order and my favorite dish, though my father thought the beef heart was too tough. It seemed normal to me - it's a bit chewy but also tastes like well marinated steak portions, except offal style; thoughtfully sweet but more smoky, savory, and well charred, almost like Chinese char siu. It accompanied a flavored boil potato piece, fresh Peruvian corn, and a delicious creamy tangy sauce. - Tamales (pork) It's a single large tamale that comes with fresh shredded onions. I was pleasantly surprised by this rendition, as the masa dough was very flavorful and even orange colored from the spices. You have a choice of pork or chicken, and the pork was oddly pressed together into a brick form. The corn dough was more impressive than the filling. - Churrasco a la Parrilla Bland New York steak requested medium rare, and it was appropriately medium rare, on the rarer side. The fries weren't too crispy, the rice was acceptable, and roast zucchini, squash, and carrots seemed questionably steamed. - La Ronda Marina Overpriced but gives a sample of two ceviches, fried seafood, and arroz con marisco intended to feed two people. The La Ronda Plate would have been a way better deal since it's a slightly smaller version, and you don't need the two ceviches since they tasted the same... as in I was trying to figure out the difference but gave up so combined them. I will say though that the fried cancha (corn nuts) were really good, and the amount of ceviche was generous, but I've had better in the peninsula. The fried seafood part disappointed me because it was overcooked - the calamari was not bouncy, and the mussels were super shrunk into the shell; the fried red snapper was alright at least, as well as the paella style seafood rice. - Pasta Fruto De Mar It's a creamy tomato seafood pasta. The mussels were again poorly cooked so that the meat was ultra stuck to the shell; you can even see it in my photo. It was otherwise good - just a bit creamier and with extra Peruvian spices compared to its Italian counterpart. - Chicha Morada We got half a liter which was enough for four people. It's one of the better ones I've had, as it was nicely sweet and fruity with finely chopped apple or pear - I couldn't tell since they were so tiny. The server also recommended their picante de mariscos to accompany our platter, so if I ever come back, I'll try that. As much as I wanted to like this place since I live ten minutes away, I was underwhelmed by what I ate, especially with the overcooked seafood at a high price point. read more

Surprising little gem in a weird location. Ambience was nice - clean, bright and spare. Service was ok - young guy who never filled the water but otherwise he was fine, just inexperienced. Top marks for me mate. The food, service, and appearance. This is what it's all about. You've gotta view the plates here more as family style. At least, that's how I think they're best enjoyed. Otherwise, the desserts and the food portions would be too extravagant. Ok, to start you off, they'll bring sliced bread to your table with butter and a tomatillo salsa. The salsa isn't spicy, like 1/16 of a seedless jalapeno. The bread has a crisp but is still soft. The beef heart appetizer, the anticucho de corazon is fine. They cook it well but the flesh is still too adjacent to a liver for my liking but for those who even mildly enjoy liver, it would be a huge hit. The green salsa you get at the start pairs better than the regular salsa provided. The corn is great. Nice, large, poppable pieces. A great change of pace from the smaller sweet corn. The La Ronda plate and all its components come with my urnest recommendation. I can assuredly say, from what I've tried for the La Ronda, that the paella and the calamari dishes are absolute primo. The ceviche was also great though the fish was a little tiresome. And that's just the food. The service here is the best I've received at the Bay at any price point. That's more of shade on the Bay, but our server was extremely attendant. We were probably visited 2 digit times during our stay. read more

11/3/23 Zach's parents were in town and we wanted to try out a new restaurant with them. We made a reservation at La Ronda for 4 people. We parked down right in front of the restaurant. When we got there, we were seated right away and it smelled so good when we walked in. Since we don't normally get Peruvian food, we asked the waiter for any suggestions and he was very knowledgeable about the menu. Here's what we got: - Chicken empanada (to share) - Beef empanada (to share) - Calamari (to share) - Picante de mariscos (mine) Zach's parents shared the beef empanada and Zach and I shared the chicken one. I'm not normally a fan of raisins, but the chicken empanada had them and they actually tasted really good! I didn't get pictures or the names of what Zach and his parents got, but I remember that they were all very pleased with their meals. I was also very satisfied with my dish. The Picante de mariscos has a lot of seafood and it wasn't as spicy as advertised which was perfectly fine with me. I like that the rice was set to the side so it wouldn't get soggy from the soup. There was a nice variety of seafood in the dish and seasoned perfectly. I am definitely looking forward to coming back. read more

As many stated, interesting location. And by interesting, I mean very busy, near an intersection by an on-ramp. Small place can get pretty noisy inside so opted to sit outside. And of course, the constant sound of traffic.. That said, the food was decent. The ceviche had good flavor, but I did have to ask for some sort of chips, where they told me it would be a few minutes cause they could fry me some. It was the first time I had been to approve in place that didn't offer some sort of vessel to eat the ceviche with. The seafood rice dish had decent flavor, and a plethora of seafood, which included snow crab legs without any sort of cracker or picker to get the meat. In a red sauce. Messy.. cause I wasn't gonna not. lol Service is extremely slow, as some have mentioned. Very nice, and accommodating. And informative when I asked about the menu. But, whether they were shorthanded or not, that's the vibe it felt like. The chicken wing appetizer, was not chicken wings. There were two wings amongst seven or eight pieces. With the other pieces being what looked to be some other piece of chicken chopped up. Then it was fried to oblivion and extremely dry. Came here on a Thursday around 6:30pm with a party of 2 and were seated immediately. This place is a gem! Deifnitely one of my go-tos when I crave Peruvian food. I have gotten takeout from here multiple times and the food has never disappointed. This is my first time dining in at the restaurant itself. The space is clean and gets lots of natural light. There is limited parking in front, it's generally a low traffic area so parking is usually available. There is also a parking lot across the intersection in the Whole Foods plaza where you can park and take a short walk here. We shared La Ronda Marina between the two of us, for its current price at 70.95 I feel like it's a pretty good deal for the content. The main draws for me are the Leche de Tigre and traditional ceviche. I think a side of chips would go really well with this order. The portions are very generous, we both left feeling super full. It was the perfect wind-down for me after a long day at work to just sit and sip a cocktail and enjoy some delicious food while spending time with my husband. VERY refreshing and tasty - Not a huge fan of the corn but everything else was just the right texture and flavor! * Mar Y Tierra - Medium Rare - SO GOOD and tasty... with the skewered tiger prawns and perfectly grilled top sirloin beef. They ask you how you want it cooked with is perfect. Came with Jasmine rice, green salad and fried cassava moot. DELISH!! The green salad was the same as what we ordered which was perfect... * Arroz Con Pollo - OK - this was my pick and the chicken was tender and juicy - but the RICE!! This is chicken sautéed with cilantro sauce mixed with rice. LOVED this dish - and to be honest - I'm not a cilantro fan - on Banh Mi sandos - I usually pull out all the cilantro - BUT there's something to be said when it becomes a sauce and added to the rice!! I totally filled up on the rice which they are super generous with... Not sure if we got half a chicken worth but it definitely was perfect to share... AND it comes * Salteado De Pescado - Fried red snapper strips with stir-fry with tomatoes, onions with French fries, served with Jasmine rice. This was a HUGE hit with everyone - the snapper strips were juice and tender which was surprising how the strips weren't very big - AND so flavorful. Not sure what the sauce is but it was one of the best dishes! I probably could have skipped the french fries and opted for more snapper! LOL... * Empanada Pollo - OK... SO we were SO FULL no one could cut into the Empanada... HOWEVER the little took it back with her and she said it was delicious. It's a good size. I wish I sized it with something - because if we ate it - it was a good taste for at least 5-6 people!! Next time for sure!! AND the service was friendly - constantly filling our water to the point hubby thought the kids weren't drinking their water cause they were always full! LOL... AND at the end even though we were full we got a box of the Cajita de alfajores to go and I'M SO GLAD we did... there's something about these cookies which are amazing... it's like light and sandy - with the touch of jelly filling - which isn't too sweet and a light dusting of powered sugar on top. I should have bought two boxes. The boxes have the perfect bite size cookies!! Can't wait to go back - and I'm DEFINITELY coming back. Parking is a bit of a challenge though - would recommend going down the street on the BevMo side - there's some there. read more

I went to the restaurant earlier this year and I thought it was great. The food is pretty good. I went back about six months later and I noticed that all the prices have gone up by about five dollars or so. . I already thought this place was pretty expensive, especially for where it is, like next to a gas station. I think this place is trying to be this extra fancy place, but it's really not. Anyways, I won't be coming back here because I think it's too expensive and the ambience isn't that good. I really did like it before, but I think that they are raising their prices to aggressively. read more

This restaurant is adorable and situated on a corner with a few other places. Parking is right in front & there's outdoor seating, with plenty of seating inside. The staff was super attentive & the food was absolutely incredible! We had the Chicharrón de Pollo (so crispy!), Ceviche Mixto & Lomo Saltado...which was one of the best we've ever had. The meat was tender, the onions & tomatoes had a ton of flavor-the fries were crispy on the outside & tender on the inside...there was a ton of juice...omg & the rice was super fluffy. Definitely worth the drive to San Mateo. Hands down, one of the best Peruvian dining experiences! read more

We came around 8 pm on a friday night and it was fairly empty, with maybe two or three other tables seated. We were seated immediately. We ordered pretty quickly and the food came out relatively fast. Free bread: This was pretty good for free bread, even though it seemed like basic white bread. The outside was a bit toasted but the inside was still soft to eat. They also provide butter and this green sauce/spread that was realllllly good. Loma saltado: 4/5 beef was cooked pretty well, i liked the onions and the sauce. I expected the fries to be a bit crispier but they were soggy, so i didn't care for them that much. I thought the dish had good cohesion and i enjoyed it but i would rather try something else next time. Paella: 4.5/5 This was amazing! Good flavor throughout the rice and they pack it with a ton of seafood. The squid was perfectly cooked and there was clam and mussels as well. The one complaint was that the mussels and clams ended up being too overcooked, but i'm not sure if there's a way to avoid this with how you make paella. We would definitely get it again!
