This is a review of the two women working the front desk only. I didn't end up receiving care here,…read moreso I don't know anything about the quality of their services. While I was walking to a Capitola restaurant, someone's pet pit bull lunged at and bit me through my shirt and ended up making two puncture wounds in my chest. I was alone and didn't know the area, so I looked up the nearest urgent care, which happened to be Dominican Urgent Care. I wasn't in a lot of pain, but I was in shock, and I had no idea how quickly it was necessary to see a doctor after a dog bite. I drove a little faster than I normally do, especially once I got to the parking lot. I quickly parked and walked into the urgent care with oozing blood still making the stain on my shirt bigger. There were two women at the front desk, and when I said that I had been bitten by a dog, one of them asked me for my insurance. I told her I had Kaiser and that I knew this place wasn't a Kaiser facility, but I was from out of town and didn't know where the closest Kaiser was. I also knew that Kaiser would reimburse for emergency healthcare until stabilization no matter where it is performed, plus I knew that if there wasn't a local Kaiser, they would reimburse me for the entire bill. The other woman told me that if I paid out of pocket, the bill might be more than $1000, depending on what treatment I received. In my head, I was ready to fill out the paperwork and be seen by the doctor. I told them that I understood, and then the first woman said that Kaiser might not pay for anything if I knowingly got treated here without going to the closest Kaiser. I was annoyed by the tone of both their voices. Wasn't this the most American experience ever? I had just had a terrifying experience that caused a potentially serious injury, and the two nurses at an urgent-care facility were clearly trying to get me to leave. Even if their financial advice was sound--and it was--they could have treated me more like a patient than an unwanted pest. Exasperated, I asked them if they knew where the closest Kaiser was. One of them told me there was a Kaiser urgent care in Scotts Valley, and when I asked how far away that was, she kind of rolled her eyes and said it wasn't that far and that I should try that place. Again, perfectly reasonable advice, but I could do without the attitude. Plus, I had no idea whether adding twenty more minutes to my waiting time could be detrimental to my health. I didn't think it was an emergency situation, but I also have no medical training. These two women had medical training, but they neither made me feel at ease, nor did they reassure me in any way that taking more time to drive to Kaiser was the *medically* preferable option. I ended up going to the Scotts Valley Kaiser, and everything turned out fine, but Dominican Urgent Care was the first healthcare facility I visited after a traumatic event that injured me, and people here didn't give me relief, not even any peace of mind.

Meeting Dr. Desai was like stumbling into an oasis after wandering the desert for years…read more Ever since our first appt, he has not stopped researching my disease, (hEDS) for me. He has personally written doctors on my behalf. He is a great advocate and knows the medical system. Clinical trials, new EDS research, and also solutions to my particular knee problem. He has good instructions on how to deal with doctors. His motto for that is: "No screaming. No crying." Lol. He is also encouraging and cares about his patients. Even our toughest conversations, I felt supported and seen. Not scared of examining patients and rolling up his sleeves. Well-versed in historical medicine. Doesn't just glance at an MRI, he'll take the proper time. He had more insightful things to say about my MRI than 6 different orthos! Highly recommend. He's a gem. He's a hero.

When my mother was in the hospital, he was our advocate - he helped my mother get seen my the cardiologist asap when the hospital was pushing back. Dr. Desai was extremely thorough in reviewing my mother's blood work and adjusting her medications accordingly. No other physician provided such detail to me. As another example, I had an elderly relative with extremely complex medical issues. Dr. Desai was only a phone call away to speak with my relative's care facility, adjust medicines, and speak with the hospitalist when he was in the hospital. I don't know of any family physician that would be able to provide that level of care! Dr. Desai practices medicine the old fashioned way - by spending time with the patient and getting to know the patient. Not only is he an excellent physician, but he is excellent at advocating for his patients in our complex healthcare system. I would recommend Dr. Desai to anyone who would like to have an excellent physician on call (he actually answers his phone for his patients) and an advocate.

I am a mother of a son you has a serious mental illness. He is usually very compliant with his…read moremedication, but because of his anosognosia (lack of insight) he will often think he does not need his medication any longer. It seems to be a common thread for many with his type of mental illness. To make a long story short, he is on medi-cal, is 32 years old and lives with my husband and me. If we did not provide a home for him, he would be homeless. He has been seeing a doctor here through behavioral health in Watsonville, who has been working with him to find the right medications for him so that he does not hear voices. He told us right before Christmas that he was hearing voices that were telling him to hurt my husband and me, he was scared and crying saying he needed help. He voluntarily went to Telecare Santa Cruz to be evaluated. He was sent to Dignity Health to get checked out because his chest was hurting. He went from Dignity Health back to Telecare and sat there for 2.5 days until he was sent to Fremont Psychiatric Hospital which is out of the area...and he stayed there from the 19 of Dec until the 29thof Dec. After coming home we could tell that his medication regime was not really working for him, but he had a Doctors appointment on Jan 10thso we thought we could wait until then. On Wednesday Jan 5th, he said his Brother should leave our house because he was trying to hurt him. We were all in the same room and it was obvious to us that he was becoming agitated and upset. We asked what was going on and he said that he felt paranoid and threatened by many people and that he would have to protect himself. We suggested he might want to go back to the hospital. He agreed and we went back to Telecare Santa Cruz. We have been told that if you go to Watsonville Hospital or Dignity Health, if they think you need to be sent to a psychiatric hospital you will be sent to telecare for them to find a facility for you. So we went to Telecare, they had him evaluated and sent him again t Dignity health because of chest pain, we assured them it was severe anxiety. We do understand that they want a patient medically cleared so we were okay with it. From there he was sent back to Telecare and he has been there and is still there as of this evening Jan 10th. He is on his second hold. We call every day and ask what is the plan for our son? They say they cannot find a bed, no hospital will take him because he is a danger. It seems odd, as our son has not committed a crime, been violent, but does have thoughts and voices about violence that is why he is seeking help. He takes medication, no one in the place tells you that if your love one takes meds, they will not prescribe them there, you must bring them in, then the Doctor there has to approve them and they will be administered. 3 days later we realize this, he had been unmedicated, held in a room with no beds, just recliner chairs, a mat to lie on the ground, a thin sheet to cover you. The TV plays news 24/7. Basically a holding cell, where you get poor food and little care. The people being admitted there are in crisis. This is a terrible way to treat people who are having mental difficulties. Our son missed his doctors appointment today. His Dr. called me today and said she would call Telecare and find out what the plan for our son was...she also wanted to make sure he could get his Invega Sustenna monthly shot in there. She was told they do not administer medication, and it would have to be approved by the Doctor there. She asked to speak to the doctor and was told she could not. Just sent the medication over and they would ask the Doctor to approve it. She was also told that they still could not find a facility to take our son because he was a danger to others. Which happens to be the criteria of being admitted. He is always asked" are you a danger to yourself or others." Odd that a local clinician would not have access to the clinician in the facility. I called El Camino Psychiatric hospital this morning, asked if they had beds available and did they take medi-cal? They answered yes and suggested that the Telecare fax over the paperwork for admitting. I called Telecare asked to speak to the social worker that was handling our son's case. I was told rudely, there were many social workers here. I again gave them my son's name and asked to be connected to the social worker assigned to our son. I finally spoke with him, asked him to fax over whatever was required to El Camino Hospital. He said he sent faxes out to everyone...but would check on El Camino Hospital because he could not remember if he had done that or not. He also said that on the weekends there were no social workers working. So how on earth do they find places for these patients to go. They make excuses and we make no progress. They all act overworked and act like we are bothering them when we call about a family member. This is part of the job. Better communication and oversite is required!
