This is place was gold!…read more The environment is for every occasion, big family gatherings, friends, and/or connect with loved ones with an important theme--TACOS! With not wanting to miss out on any specific specialty taco, I decided to go with their Sampler Plus and boy was I happy to do that. Decided to do two Tacos El Plebe, Taco el Rojo, El de Asada, and Taco El Compa. If I had to choose, the Taco El Plebe had the edge but none of these disappointed. The sauces were on point and for the first time in a while, I felt that great kick but not over bearing. The grilled onions was just the cherry on top of tacos. And Tuesdays seems to be free cup of Frijoles Mamalones I was happy to be trying this place on a Tuesday, it did not disappoint but I was feeling it. I had to opt out of trying any desserts, but that just means I'll have to be back. They have a DJ and/or play music but it's not so loud you can't have intimate conversations or not hear your friends and family. The waiter said the weekends is jammed pack but I wouldn't let that deter me from trying to be here, there is plenty of parking and seating, just may come earlier rather than later.

They have two locations, but this is THE location - the original - the one with the great atmosphere and the one that has the food truck vibe that they started with even though it's a full-blown restaurant. We opted to sit outside because the atmosphere is just great. Our server was Jacob and he was great - appropriately helpful and attentive without being too attentive. Now - I should say that I'm not a street taco fan. In fact, this is the only place I've ever had a street taco that I liked - so that's saying a LOT. We started with the chips and queso which had some type of meat in it with cabbage on top - oh - sooo tasty! They'll bring you as many chips as you need to get every bit of queso! Very good flavor! The charro beans had meat and cheese and were phenomenal - the flavors and textures - I could make a meal of just the beans, but fortunately we didn't do that. We had the taco sampler which has 5 different tacos. I opted to do the 'step up' and made one of mine shrimp. The presentation was top notch. They came with cilantro and sautéed onion slices. Now, you may say 'they're onions - big deal' but those onions had an amazing flavor to them! I put some on my tacos, and I had several forkfuls just like that! The salsas all had really good flavor - each was different but great and each had some heat. I am totally a salsa snob - I admit it. These were on par with the rest of the meal - great! The tacos - an El Rojo Quesadilla; El de Asada Quesidilla; shrimp; El Plebe; and chicken with sautéed pineapple. The corn tortillas were perfect - not too dry and not too moist. Now - I'm not a corn tortilla fan, but these were perfect! Each of the meats was perfectly prepared and flavored. Every bite was a treat. I have never had a shrimp taco stuffed with so many shrimp - seriously! I was skeptical about the chicken and pineapple because, I don't like pineapple on food but I was pleasantly surprised that the flavors really worked! Our dinner was great. Great atmosphere. Great service. Great food. Not too often that all three are found in one place. The only down side - El Plebe is 3 hours from where I live so I can't come back on a regular basis. But if you live nearby or are passing through - you are REALLY missing out if you don't try this place!

A Hidden Gem for Mexican Seafood -- Don't Sleep on This Place!…read more As a traveler from California in town for a swim meet, I was on the hunt for good Mexican seafood and stumbled upon La Costa Grill. Based on the reviews, I had decent expectations -- but this place blew them out of the water. The ratings honestly don't do it justice. From the moment we walked in, the hospitality was warm and genuine. We were greeted by the hostess and seated right away, even during the lunch rush. Then came a wonderful surprise: our server brought out a mini skillet of the most incredible black refried beans for dipping, alongside four salsas ranging from mild to hot, all served with tostadas -- compliments of the house. Back in California, you're lucky to get one salsa, let alone refried beans as a free starter. It immediately set the tone for the meal. Our server was knowledgeable and genuinely helpful with recommendations. We ended up sharing a lunch portion of paella, an octopus taco, and a fish ceviche tostada -- and every single dish delivered. The octopus taco was a standout; served over a layer of refried beans, it was a flavor combination I didn't know I needed. The ceviche tostada was fresh and bright, and the paella was satisfying and well-seasoned. I also have to give our server extra credit for her transparency -- she mentioned upfront that the paella leans heavier on rice than seafood. That kind of honesty is rare and really appreciated. We ordered it anyway, and we were glad we did. If you're visiting McAllen and want authentic, flavorful Mexican seafood with outstanding service and hospitality, La Costa Grill needs to be on your list. I'll absolutely be returning before I head back home.
