Madi took great care of us from the moment we arrived. She made sure we had a great table and went out of her way to make our evening special. Lupe was an amazing server. She was attentive, friendly, and made sure everything came out quickly and perfectly. The steaks were absolutely delicious and had that incredible oak-fire flavor that makes the Hitching Post so unique. We started with the Portuguese sausage that was amazing. The meal came with delicious garlic bread, a fresh salad, shrimp cocktail, and a side. We especially enjoyed the baked potato. And then, to finish everything off, they brought out an old-school scoop of ice cream with chocolate syrup. Such a fun and nostalgic touch! Everything was delicious, the atmosphere was so much fun, and the entire experience was truly special. We had an amazing time and would highly recommend the Hitching Post to anyone looking for a great meal and a memorable evening.

We had heard great things, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. We dined with our two kids, and everyone left happy. My wife and I shared the large ribeye for two, which was cooked perfectly and packed with flavor. The meal included four courses, and every part of it was excellent. For our appetizer, we ordered the artichoke, and it immediately brought back memories of my mom making artichokes when I was growing up. It was simple, delicious, and a great way to start the meal. Our kids both ordered the steak kids' meal, and we were impressed by the quality. It's not often you find a restaurant that serves a kids' steak meal that is genuinely delicious, but they both loved it and cleaned their plates. The salads were fresh, the sides were great, and dessert was the perfect ending to a fantastic meal. What stood out most was the value. Considering the quality of the food and everything that was included, we felt the meal was very reasonably priced. The service was spot on throughout the evening--friendly, attentive, and welcoming without being intrusive. If you're visiting the Central Coast, whether you're staying in Santa Maria or exploring Paso Robles wine country, the Hitching Post is absolutely worth the trip. We're very glad we made the effort to visit and are already looking forward to coming back.

Oh boy, real Santa Maria BBQ! Woo Hoo! Tri-Tip is the name of the game in these parts so that's what I'm doing. Got the Tri-Tip Dip and a side of BBQ sauce so I could have it both ways. I was really looking forward to these West Coast Chili Beans too. Wife wanted BBQ Chicken so I got her the BBQ Chicken Combo. I asked the girl at the register if we could get dark meat with the combo. She looked a little confused and said "You mean like Tri-Tip?" Oh boy. No, dark meat chicken like a thigh and drumstick. "Oh, do you want a breast or a thigh?". Let's roll with the thigh, thanks. Our food came out pretty quickly. I asked for horseradish for the Tri-Tip Dip and was politely told they don't have any. Silly me, why would they have horseradish when they sell a French Dip Sandwich? The Tri-Tip Dip was decent. Not going to lie. The West Coast Chili Beans were a disappointment. I expected so much better. The BBQ sauce was runny and tastes like molasses and maple syrup. Nah, Stick with the Au Jus and you will be fine. The Chicken Combo was a train wreck. Beans cold, rice cold, chicken overcooked by a mile. It's not easy to overcook the hell out of dark meat chicken but they found a way. Wife not happy, at all. It's another one and done. Sorry Rancho Nipomo Deli & BBQ.

All 4 of us ordered the Tri Tip sandwiches. The tri tip was very flavorful! probably the best tri tip I had ever had. TH=here was some good smoke flavor in that meat. I found that the BBQ sauce took away from the sammich, so I did very little dipping. If I come again, which I hope I do, I will order that sammich, but prepared in the same manner in which they prepare the roast beef sandwich. We took some chile verde sausages home to try, and those have a strong and memorable chile taste. For people who do not like spicy, beware. For the rest of us it is a satisfying burn. It is a pork sausage. Wife denied the purchase of the blackberry habanero sausage, so I will be left wondering about those. We also grabbed their pesto mayo. We will be trying that this week. I think I would have liked it on my tri tip sammich. I love pesto on anything. Place ain't cheap, but what is?

Danny never came by for drink refills and I never received the glass of red wine I'd ordered with my steak. . That said, the giant $58 NY Steak was amazing! One of THE best I've ever had with great flavor and texture. The grilled artichoke appetizer was also delish with a great smoky flavor. . Unfortunately, the fried mushroom appetizer was just OK. They did not taste house made. And, the full-rack of pork spareribs for $47 were very chewy and dry. The ribs did not come with any sauce and it took ages to flag down our server to get some. We decided to simply take most of it home to re-cook :-( . After we'd finished eating, we sat around with 1/2 eaten plates (and a pile of uneaten ribs) for the better part of 30 more minutes with zero service or follow-up. And by that time (two hours later), it was not busy and we really needed to head home. Gosh, did he go on break or something? When Danny finally arrived, we had to then ask for boxes and the bill. . The mediocre food, plus the forgetful service definitely put a damper on our family gathering. For a nearly $300 tab, the service really should have been better.

The waitress came by and checked on the tables on both sides of us and didn't even look our way so I had to go to the bar and order my own second beer. After we had been told "sit anywhere" and sat ourselves, we were told 10 minutes later that our table was needed and to move because they were expecting a large party and they needed our table. Party showed up and the table where we were previously seated was empty, as were several of the other tables surrounding that original table. Cashier was decidedly devoid of friendliness, but not unfriendly. Just a smile-less and hurried experience. Wait staff was very friendly by comparison. Ambiance: spartan. No real ambiance to speak of - fairly lifeless walls and racks of non-food tchochkes. Not particularly inviting. Food: VERY expensive for what you get. I spent over $80 (when you include the tip) for two meals and two non-alcoholic drinks. Now I don't mind paying for a good meal, but this wasn't world-class barbecue. My meal alone (3-meat combo) was $36. I got the chopped tri-tip, the pulled pork and the braised tri-tip. Why did I get 2 tri-tip selections? Because they don't have brisket. Not even offered at all. My meal came with 2 sides and I selected cole slaw and baked beans. First of all, the cole slaw was their name for a chopped lettuce salad with no dressing whatsoever. Just a few spices but the cole slaw was completely draw chopped lettuce salad. The other side - the baked beans - was straight-out-of-the-can Van Camp's baked beans with a few red beans thrown in. VERY unimpressive. included with the meal was corn bread. The cornbread was *definitely* Jiffy corn bread mix, made without any embellishments or enhancements. Luckily, it wasn't bone-dry (as only Jiffy-mix cornbread can be). Flavor: No real smoke flavor to any of the meat. The braised tri-tip was basically lacking in any real flavor at all. It was a little tough (as medium-rare tri-tip can be), and there were three smaller sized pieces (hard to believe this selection was worth $12 alone). The chopped tri-tip seemed to be oven-roasted with lots of onions - and chopped meat with lots of onions is usually re-cooked in a pan to hide the flavor of old, left-over meat. The only palatable selection was the pulled pork: tender, juicy and tasty enough - but definitely not smoked or barbecued. Finally, the barbecue sauce was tasty, but not tasty enough to make an entire meal out of it. Would I go back? Nope. Not very good value for the money. Would I recommend? No. Not "real" barbecue and not good value for the money. I wish Pismo had better barbecue, but you'll have to go to Nipomo (Jocko's) or Orcutt (Orcutt Burgers) to get that smokey, flame-grilled flavor.
