It's sad to me. $18 pastrami sandwich (which used to be great, thin sliced mounds of pastrami in a French roll) has become thick sliced meat (and not a lot) on some kind of crappy store bought rye.... Came here on a whim during a road trip. I ordered two different sandwiches, the Tri-tip and the beef and cheese. Tri-tip was very tender but needed to be dipped in BBQ for extra flavor. Pretty small size for 12 bucks but that's the world we're living in now. Sandwich came with meat and bread, pretty standard. The beef and cheese was okay. The best thing about it was the caramelized onion. I don't think I would order it again. If you're in the area just order the tri-tip and extra sauce. We know that Santa Maria is the birthplace of Tri-Tip so we wanted to try their tri-tip sandwich and it was delicious!! We got it to go and they gave us BBQ sauce to dip it in and it was an amazing combo!! The meat was tender enough and tasted so good mixed with the BBQ sauce. Extremely disappointed. $18 for a limp pastrami sandwich and another $18 for an extremely plain and bone dry chicken sandwich. The chicken is so dry, it's crumbles and the bread is so stale and also crumbles. Unfortunately we got our sandwiches to-go otherwise we would have returned these. We would have been better off getting subway sandwiches to be completely honest. read more

Best place to get your special cuts of meat!! I love to make stuffed pork chops. Finding chops that are thick enough for stuffing was impossible until Woody's opened up. Everyone is super nice and friendly. It's just a great addition to our community. read more

I came into Woody's Butcher Block for a sandwich for lunch the other day. I have seen some yelp reviews in regards of the few that they have in addition to the meat they have for sale. The store is primarily a butcher shop. There is one big dining table in the middle of the store but they do have needs and drinks and different kinds of sauces all around the sides of the store. And right ahead they have the meat laid out. They have their sandwich menu on the back wall. The workers recommended the tri tip sandwich but then I went with the Italian stallion sandwich because it looked like it had a lot of components to it. I had a choice of bread and since I had had no idea I ended up going with whatever the worker recommended. Overall the sandwich was pretty good, it was pretty good but I did like the layers of ingredients in it. This is a great place to get a sandwich if you're ever in the Santa Maria area. Keep in mind their store hours if you're trying to get a sandwich for dinner since they close at 6. There is a decent amount of parking here in this plaza. So it should be pretty easy to find a good spot here. read more

Best prices and quality on quail and freshly made sandwiches. Also a lot of game meats and a full case of freshly cut meats.

While driving on my way back to Ventura from Avila Beach, my wife mentioned she wanted a fresh sandwich not really knowing Santa Maria I looked up places on yelp and decided on Woody's. This place was an excellent choice. The turkey sandwich was a good size and tasted amazing. The guy working the counter was friendly and helpful. They also had some unusual meat. I got some quail. The establishment was clean and organized. Hope I'm in the area again, want to try the Italian sandwich next time. read more

Food: 3. I was excited to try this place because of the high Yelp reviews. Was originally going to The Swiss Restaurant for lunch only to find out it was closed and I needed an alternative. Their front door was boarded up. Upon checking Yelp, I found this place. No problem finding a parking spot. Inside is spacious with a butcher shop and gift shop. They only offer sandwiches for prepared food. I wanted a steak sandwich but they were out. So, we ordered the Italian Stallion and Tritip. Staff was friendly and informative. As far as the food, both sandwiches were okay. Nothing stood out for either sandwich. The tritip was tender but not particularly flavorful and looked small and unappealing. Let me preface this by saving I was a vegan for 3 years and a vegetarian for 4 years before that. This was my first time inside of a butcher shop, and my first impression was how clean and spacious it was! It wasn't bloody and dirty like the movies haha. Now that I eat a paleo diet, I came in looking for bones for bone broth, and liver (#health). It was my first time buying these items, and the butcher was super friendly! We ended up talking for a while and he gave me so much detail about the source of the meat, different cuts, and nutrition value. He got me excited to try different cuts! Not sure why this place got such a high rating. The tri tip was overcooked (should be pink at the very least) and leathery, and completely tasteless. No seasoning whatsoever. The ($17.99 each!) sandwiches were very small for the huge price. We were given bbq sauce which was cold and macaroni salad from a store bought container. Pretty nasty stuff. My family and I had left Los Angeles earlier that day and decided that this time we would take 101 back home to the Bay Area instead of taking highway 5. This day was somewhat of a mistake to take the 101 freeway as it was a torrential rainstorm hitting the state. Upon our travels northbound we were able to stop through Solvang, Ca. Which my wife thoroughly loved. As we further proceeded towards the Bay Area we realized that none of us had eaten since earlier in the morning as the thoughts of getting home were the utmost importance. But at the same time hunger pangs started to set in. What to do at this point, as my wife and I just had set our fate earlier in the morning on settling on fast food on the way home. It was easy and it would get the job done with the children and we could get on our way without any time lost. Time lost was the question that needed to be answered. We were traveling through the state and skipping all that was special about it. We had yes, stopped in Solvang. But what else was there that we could visit that represents our state? As we proceeded northbound I noticed that we were headed towards Santa Maria. As a barbecue aficionado, I realized that I have never made the trip towards the California BBQ mecca of Santa Maria. I have smoked briskets, pork shoulders, prime rib roasts, chicken, salmon, tri tips, and grilled steaks incessantly since I was 9 years old. I love barbecue, regardless of where it is from. But I had never made the homage to my own California's BBQ namesake. We initially were going to head to the Elks Lodge in Santa Maria which has been featured in many shows on television. Waze which is an amazing app decided to pinpoint that location in the middle of the 101 highway. We were somewhat confused and ridiculously flabbergasted on how it would tell us to stop in the highway. We noticed a Harley Davidson symbol off of the side of the freeway (as a rider and owner of a couple of these bikes we always see this as a safe haven). The rain at this point had become relentless. It had been raining since we left LA in the morning and it was still raining at this time, yet it was raining harder now. The town of Santa Maria seemed flooded, I was happy as we were able to ford areas of deep water with our Bronco Sport that seemed to trouble some other vehicle's. The great staff of the HD dealership Santa Maria were kind as expected (Another Review). They gave us directions to the Santa Maria Elks Club. We left the dealership and arrived to the Elks Club only to find that Yelp and Google shows them as open, yet the bar is only open and they are not open for food. Struggling to find a place to eat in a slowly flooding town, we checked online and found Woody's Butcher Block. We were tired and hungry, so we decided to make the trek to the Butchers Block. When we arrived the entire street in front of it was flooded, it was complicated on getting into the parking lot. But once we were in we noticed that we were staring at an actual butchers shop. I was excited. Stand alone butcher shops like this one were hard to find, in my era in the Bay Area Bobby Lee's Country Smokehouse used to be the last true butcher shop that I can remember. His food while amazing was more based in Louisiana though. We approached the counter to order we told the clerk what we wanted and looking at our family he asked if we wanted an actual sit down restaurant. This was awesome as we were new to this area, he offered us options! We had already decided that we wanted to try this place. We ordered 3 tri-tip sandwiches and one pastrami (wife). We took one of the two tables that were offered to us, and once we received our sandwiches we were amazed. The tri-tip was amazing. They were soft and warm, with great beef flavor with a tinge of the red oak smoke that Santa Maria is known for. We were offered some packaged sweet baby rays bbq sauce with the sandwiches. They did not need it. I even considered purchasing some red oak to take home to make my own Santa Maria style beef. I ended up wandering around looking at the meat that was offered for sale. It all looked amazing. The owner I believe his name was Tim was there as well, he was kind and great to talk to. He knows his meats. It's now under new ownership and it's just not the same. My recent experience was that most of the meats now are pre-packaged or thin sliced and vacuum sealed, so the appeal just isn't there anymore. They got rid of the Veteran's discount, so that's no longer a thing and sad to see that small piece of support go away. The sign on the front of the building is also starting to weather away and in general, it seems like the care factor has gone down. I think Woody's had its run when the previous owner was there. It doesn't seem like the same passion for the product is there anymore. I have been going here for years and I'll likely not go back again unless things turn around and the Veteran's discount comes back. read more

We stopped by looking for a great trip tip sandwich. The guys working there were very helpful and attentive. I wish I could be as enthusiastic about the sandwich. It was not huge but adequate. My disappointment lay in the lack of flavor. There wasn't anything to it but a basic beef flavor, unlike other sandwiches I've enjoyed. Where was the seasoning? Fortunately we had some Barbeque sauce; otherwise it would have been very bland. I'll probably eat only one tri tip sandwich on this visit to the Central Coast and I found myself disappointed that this had been the one. I was looking forward to a very tasty experience. Unassuming little market that's big on delivery!! Driving thru to Morro Bay and was craving a Santa Maria tri-tip sandwich. Unfortunately most were closed so we gave Woody's a chance. Charming, old school, clean & tidy market with tables to dine at. Extra friendly counter help. Kindly answered questions about their meats for sale. Took our order, brought us our sandwich and minds blown. The tri-tip was smoked to perfection. Flavor, tenderness, smokiness all on point. Hardly touched our complimentary bbq sauce. Woody's knocked it out of the park and we will most definitely make it a destination when traveling to the central coast. read more

We found this place on our drive down the 101 from NorCal to LA. It's a deli like butcher shop with sandwiches, chips and drinks located in a strip mall. They have really good tri-tip and the order taker also gave us a pickle back which was a nice bonus. Also tried the snickerdoodle and chocolate chip cookies which weren't bad. Recommend stopping here for a quick bite if you're around Santa Maria. read more

This place is an absolute overrated, over priced joke. Got a tri tip and a pastrami sandwich for $16 each and I got a small sandwich that looked like it was for a kids meal.
