If you decide to go and you don't speak any spanish, hopefully there is someone working there that does speak a little English to help with your order. When I attempted to order, the gentleman didn't speak English wish is fine, and a Latina woman that spoke English was able to assist me with ordering. We ordered a half of a chicken, the mojarra frita and a few chicken and carne asada tacos. My favorite thing about the food was the fact that they use fresh corn tortillas. When a Mexican restaurant uses FRESH tortillas, I personally think it enhances the flavor of your taco 10 fold. Mojarra frita was delicious, however, I recommend throwing it in your air fryer if you have one to crispen it back up. read more

The food was among one of the best burritos and tacos I've tried during my trip. I like the presentation and packaging of the food and prices were reasonable. My wife had got the green chile salsa with her friend sad said it was outstanding. So..she sends me a couple days later to get some more. Problem was noboday there spoke english so I ended up with chile verde which was good..nice and somewhat spicey. I also got some beans (pretty good) and rice that was so so. Actually, 3.33. Came by for a taco fix for Taco Tuesday. I didn't see any specials for Tuesday. This is carryout only. There is no designated places to sit or stand and eat. Floor was marked to adhere to social distancing and partitions are in place between customer and staff. I ordered a half pound of carne asada, a half pound of carnitas, a pork tamale, a pack of corn tortillas and a large container of red salsa. The carne asada was bland and didn't have the nice burnt ends I like at Lo Major de Jalisco. The carnitas was better but the seasoning/marinade was too light for me and it was a bit dry. The pork tamale was good but I prefer the filling to be more soft and shredded. The salsa was okay but, as the cashier noted, definitely not spicy/hot. The corn tortillas were fine. There is simply no way to put it--best corn tortillas ever! That also makes it, with some fine carnitas, some of the best tacos ever. My wife and son don't even like corn tortillas (heathens!) and so it is testament to this place that they both eat with mouths gaping open--rude. These are like no other tortillas--fluffy, succulent, just exactly what you want caressing your carnitas. And yes, maybe there are too many onions, but one simple scrape and boom, the perfect taco! The carne asada was flavorful as all get out but a bit fatty. The guacamole was excellent as well. My son got the nachos and raved about that, but man, avoid that processed cheese business. Just stick with the best corn tortillas you will ever eat--and get the tacos. The place has no tables(though they do have a metal counter so that you can stand and eat), and most of the people here when we were there, at noon on a saturday, were taking the food to go. And when I say that I mean they had pork skin, beef intestines, and I'm not sure what else but a lot of stuff that you typically only see in Mexico. I would not recommend coming here for the customer service but the half chicken was pretty good. Not the best chicken ever. It is certainly not brined beforehand but it tasted fresh. It comes with red salsa and green. Neither had any kick but the taste of the green was best. Also got 2 tacos being warmed in the window. When I asked what was filled in them, the guy seemed to not know, asked someone in Spanish, guessed chicken, but they were filled with potato? Weird. They were good though, strangely enough but I do not know if they were to be sold like that with no meat filling. Also got a small container of fajita shrimp. The very SMALL container was as much $ as the half chicken. I would avoid this in the future as it was just not worth it. They tasted fresh enough, but contained mostly peppers. They apparently just started selling shrimp last Wed. Not sure how that will go in this town at $10.99/lb. I asked about the corn tortillas and they offered to let me sample one. They were good so, bought some of those and you can get as many as you want at a time. I wish I could have seen the making process of the tortillas like you can at other places but this was done more to the back of the shop. No real room to eat here, food is to go. So on my last night in Santa Maria, Monday night, I decided to have some good, I-can't-get-this-back-in-Northern Virginia, Mexican food. I discovered this place on Christmas day, when I was at another carneceria looking for carne asada to throw on the grill. People told me if I wanted good food, I needed to drive a few streets over. As soon as I got out of my car, in the parking lot, I nearly peed my pants. I hadn't experienced that kinda pleasure since I left my favorite joints in East L.A. and downtown Santa Ana. I walked in and noticed the hot assed young man behind the counter. Luckily he was the one to help me! there is a hot case to one side, with plenty of prepared dishes. The case to the right contains all kinds of side dishes, such as different types of salsas, "salads" i.e. escabeche, etc. I ordered the Chile Verde with rice and beans, and then got additional containers of rice, beans, and salsa. All of that cost under $9.00. That's what I'm talkin' about! All orders are to go, by the way. As big as it is, there is no place to sit and eat. I get it home and took a bite of the pork. Very nice. Tender, not fatty, perfectly spiced for me, and plenty of it. I split the order with my mother, because there was that much in the container, then divided the rice and beans for us. Add in the super fresh, super hot corn tortillas and the salsa, and you have two women in a house with their eyes rolled to the back of their heads. This place was like a little heaven for me :-) from the chicharones to the tripe to the chile verde to the lengua to the carnitas... everything was top-notch, fresh, delicious! As you will see, among all the great things they have Kama probably the best thing they offer is the fresh-made tortillas... healthier and Ultra delicious :-) I was so disappointed that my friend has been holding out all this time on this place, imagine all the tacos I could have eaten in the last 6 months from here!!! A simple deli style shop, El Toro must have an army of Mexican grandmothers stashed away somewhere in the back making all of these wonderful foods. El Toro is consistently delicious, well prepared, and CHEAP. You can feed a family of four for under $15. You can get a combination plate of your favorite meat (carne asada, pollo, chile verde, chili colorado, carnitas, buche, lengua, whatever they have) with beans, rice, salsa, and a half dozen fresh (and I mean taken right off the production line) tortillas for $5. You can get a burrito that will dwarf pretty much any other standard burrito in town for $4. Tacos are about $1.50. Tacos dorados are 50 cents. I can go on and on and on. I would have given them five stars, but the most recent time we went, they made a simple mistake and overcharged my wife's debit card $40. It was an honest mistake that happens in the melee of a cafeteria style line, but it was one that still required dealing with the bank and monitoring her account to see if the money came back. They could however make up that star if they also started making fresh flour tortillas in house... read more

This is mostly a takeout place (more like a deli), they have 2 tables I think, but this place has a line out the door most days. Authentic interior of Mexico fare--buche (throat), tripas (intestine), ensalada de nopal (cactus salad), requeson (pot cheese), chicharron (chitlings), etc. etc. etc. Really a take-out type place.. whether to eat right away or bring home and have later or freeze. I always buy the chile de arbol sauce to cook with at home... chile con huevos, chile con queso, chile con carne, etc. They make their corn tortillas on the premises but I think Diana's are just as good, maybe better. And while Michele is right, there's no place to sit and eat, there is a place to stand and eat... there's a stool high counter (sans stools) around the perimeter so you can scarf at least one thing down before you get back in your car. read more
