I've been driving to Freeport once a year for ten years and I've always parked in the same place: the back of the lot behind the Gap Outlet. Every year as I've walked from the parking lot to Main Street, I've passed the Lobster Cooker. It looked like a nice place to hang out and have some dinner. There's a pleasant-looking patio with a view of the street, a small seat-yourself dining room, cute little wholesome Maine high school students behind the counter. It all seemed very no-frills New England and quite comforting. I'd always wanted to give the Lobster Cooker a try but I'd never got around to it. This evening, I finally gave it a shot. Yes, there was the guitarist on the patio, doing some covers of Elton John and Willie Nelson. There were the tables and the umbrellas and the bustle of Main Street and the wholesome kids behind the counter. But I was really there for the food and somehow--don't ask me how--I spent $14.95 for two very small and tasteless crab cakes, a handful of sodden French fries and a Coca Cola. The Lobster Cooker has reopened under new management, and darn aren't we lucky it did! I have never had a lobster roll this good in all my lobster roll eating years. Fresh cut super crispy fries accompany a huge portion of perfectly cooked lobster on a split top toasted bun and a bit of mixed greens. You get a choice of mayo or drawn butter with which to lightly dress the lobster meat. It was $16.99, a great deal for this area and this caliber. The staff were clearly proud of their product, and super friendly. They also serve fried seafood, whole lobsters, and some burgers and kids friendly fare, as well as local beers. Major tourist trap. In our self-created southern Maine lobster roll tour, this was by far the worst.. most expensive and worst tasting. The lobster was not cooked well at all (super firm) and the meat quality was poor. My friends ordered fried fish platters and nearly all of it was just over-fried, bad quality fish. We order (Fried Shrimp platter and a Fried Chicken Sandwich). 20 minutes go by, nothing, people who ordered 15 or so minutes after us got there food. After about 30 minutes I go up to pick up window. Wait about 5 minutes, no one comes. Finally someone does. Tell them my name..... "oh, you had fried shrimp and chicken fingers basket". No! Fried Shrimp and Fried Chicken Sandwich. "Oh, ok, make it a fried chicken sandwich. Another 10 minutes go by.... "was it baked or fried?". Ugg..... Meanwhile my fried shrimp platter is sitting in window getting COLD! A little pricey, but it totally hit the spot! While waiting for my friend's skis to have their bindings attached we grabbed lunch here, mainly because it had "Lobster" in its name! We certainly weren't disappointed! The guy who took our order was very helpful and very nice about explaining the difference in "lobster roll" and "lobster salad roll." I was pleasantly surprised and happy to find that they had these two options, and that one of them didn't have any mayo. Yup just pure claw meat in a bun! That's the perfect lobster roll to me! What happened to this place? I'm not sure when they renovated/changed the set up, but now I have to pay for table service and my soups still come in paper cups? How does this make sense? I miss the more casual version of this joint. The vibe was different, and I'm pretty sure the food was different. You used to be able to just go up to the counter, order the goods, and take a seat. Now you have to take a seat and seat subpar watery lobster bisque and clam chowder. Both soups had a layer of oil - not thick hearty fat - on top. They were super thin, barely coated the spoon, and were so watered down. Surprisingly had decent flavor, but a chowder should be a CHOWDER, not a broth like version of one. This was a "fine", nothing more than ok, restaurant. If you must eat in Freeport (because you got here intending to spend the day and realized there was nothing worth the trip except LL Bean) then it is OK. Be aware of two important things... the shrimp basket is very generous, but it is the small sized shrimp. And... (a big one)... they advertise as something like all cooked gluten free. Well, yes. But that only means the oil is gluten free. The breading (the most important part of fried foods) is not at all gluten free. They don't lie; just play with words. Don't expect to be able to eat here gluten free! Personally I would never eat here again. Update: I received a response from someone working at the restaurant who said that they ARE gluten free in their breading!!! If this is the case it does change my review to 4 stars. The waitress (otherwise a very good waitress by the way) absolutely did say that only the oil was gluten free. It needs to be stressed to wait staff that this info is extremely important to people. If I were celiac (instead of mildly intolerant), I would have walked out. Thank you for your clarification. I suggest you capitalize on this gluten free option and certainly make your staff more aware. My review increases to 4 stars. read more

I always stop to eat here when shopping in Freeport. Quick and moderately priced, fresh seafood both in and out of season! Other food options are a bit expensive comparatively, but the staff is friendly. Plenty of space to sit. I went in to ask if she made a mistake perhaps, she said "It's because of the Red tide in Florida". For real! Florida! When I'm in Maine! She said she should have told me. Uh yes, you should have told me Florida clams are more expensive in Maine? I just had a feeling that when she heard my foreign accent she charged me more. The Haddock Fish & Chips are the best anywhere in Maine. The fish have a light batter and the fries are crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. I also ordered a 1/2 lb shrimp basket for later. The owner was very friendly and checked with you about the food. The first floor was more of a seafood shack experience while the 2nd floor was full service. The five stars is for the Lobster Bisque. I can't speak to anything else on the menu because that is all I've had, and likely to remain the only thing I'll ever get. After all, why get anything else??? I would venture to say, the bisque is in the top 5 soups I've ever had in the world. The Lobster Bisque has a perfect blend of sweetness, creaminess, thickness, chunkiness (I hate a bisque w/o chunks of lobster! What's the point eh?) and splash of sherry. In fact I rerouted a vacation through Maine that was supposed to be a big loop so that I could travel back through Freeport to get the bisque again. It's not the cheapest place to eat, but I think the bisque might justify the airfare. I'm not sure exactly how you could ship a dairy-based bisque, but I wish they shipped. The ambiance is casual, touristy coastal Maine. What do you expect? Not a place for a romantic date, but perfect place to grab lunch when you're shopping or pick up some food to go before a picnic or on the way home. The fries were ok and ice tea was good. Even when I asked for a refill on my iced tea in the empty restaurant it was good. I needed it to wash down the calamari I'd ordered. They won the Chowder Challenge many times, so yes their Clam Chowder is good. But after I tried many different kinds in Chowder challenge, I'd say alot of clam chowder from restaurants in Maine are all very good, very hard to decide which is better. In other words, if you are in Maine and have a restaurant serves good Chowder in the neighbor, I'd say just go there. But for Lobster Bisque, I'm sure this is the best place! I became big fan for Lobster Bisque and tired in many different places, but I always came back to this place. When it's freezing outside like 10 degrees, it's indiscribable feeling to have this warm creamy delicious Bisque in your mouth then down to throat... Ahhh I miss that so much! This was just a nice little place. We were in the area hitting all the shops and they are right on the main street. I went with the lobster roll which was simple but tasty. They did not do anything fancy just get some good quality lobster onto a hot dog roll. I also had the lobster bisque which had a great flavor but could have used a few more pieces of lobster. Others in the group I was with had the broiled lobster which were clearly fresh right out of the tank. Overall a good stop for some nice lobster while hitting the shops. read more

They recently added table service, which I am mixed on. I had been happy enough ordering at the counter The lobster roll is good but naked. Meat is nice and fresh. I like this because nothing is worse then a mayo smothered butter smothered lobster roll! You add your own butter and mayo to it.
