It would seem like a great place to watch a game, but we were on a schedule that day. We sat at the bar. Bartender was prompt, polite, and professional. Seating was comfortable. I ordered fish and chips which was very good. My wife ordered chicken fingers that were recommended, but were very tough. I brought her leftovers home but I ended up throwing them out as I agreed. Good just not great. Sat at the bar ordered the Heater and my friend got the hamburger with fries and beans. I had fries and Cole slaw. My sandwich was ok as was the coleslaw. But fries weren't even warm. I know that I ordered right before 4 so the dinner menu was coming up. The service was slow and I had to ask and wait for everything instead of just getting it. Last week my husband and I had stopped in to Gippers to check on the possibility of their hosting a large party following the burial of my 99-year-old mother-in-law. The hostess seemed friendly and credible, and said that Mondays were typically slow after lunch and that they would probably be able to accommodate us in their regular dining area. She also assured us that if not, we would be able to use the large private room to the side and still order off of the menu to accommodate 25-30 guests' individual tastes. Admittedly we arrived at around 1 but we waited until 1:20 and still no adequate space/tables for our party opened up. When I asked about the hostess's promise of the potential use of the other private room, one of the other waitresses said "oh, that should never have been promised." But it had been promised as an option, and that promise was worthless. Even though we offered to pay an extra premium for that promise to be fulfilled, the owner refused to come out of the kitchen to discuss the situation and the fact that a handicapped person and many elderly people -- including a 97-year-old and her family -- were left waiting in the hallway revealed the greatest lack of courtesy and compassion, not to mention totally incompetent restaurant management that our family has ever experienced. My deceased mother-in-law loved Gippers and may be rolling over in her grave to see how they could so rudely disappoint an entire family that included at least 20 longstanding customers. The close to $1,300 that we spent for our after-funeral celebration of life went elsewhere. And so will we from now on... read more

We have been coming to gippers for many ,many years my granddaughters always accompany us ,they always of course have the grilled cheese ,the management has taken it off the menu, they will make it but it has 1 slice of cheese and no sides ,one of the easiest things for the kitchen to make ,just don't want kids there now ,? Hungrily looking for a bite to eat post hike. A quick Yelp search and Gipper's popped up. Going in blindly, this place was a pleasant surprise. Packed to the brim with sports memorabilia, this place had all the makings and feels of a great local hometown place. Seated immediately and handed menus, my friend and I ordered two local brews and browsed the menu. The menu is huge. There are so many options it was hard to choose. A lot of the burgers and tasty meals are named after famous athletes. One recommendation I can definitely say would be the chicken tenders. Holy moly! I don't typically brag about chicken but these were hot, tender, juicy, and crispy. I opted for a chicken club and my friend went with the steak. We had called several days ahead to reserve seating for approximately 25 people for a get together after a funeral. The server told us that there would be no problem and to call a little before we'd be there so they would be ready. We did that, only to arrive and find we didn't have seating. The server refused to seat us in the empty banquet room citing not enough kitchen staff. Instead she told us we'd have to wait at least 20 minutes for tables to clear. When we asked to speak to the manager, she refused. He hid in the kitchen. She refused to "think outside the box" by seating us in the banquet room and then closing off the other tables as they emptied. The sad part is that Gipper's was one of my mother in law's favorite places to eat. We never would have been treated so poorly under the previous management. They knew our family well and they didn't lie like the waitress did. Gipper's was busy so it was obvious our business wasn't important to them. None the less we were treated so poorly and left. Don't plan on this restaurant to stand by what they tell you. This was an important occasion and they messed up. read more

Our funeral service scheduled/reserved a separate room a couple days before, when we showed up after the funeral service they said they could not accommodate after zero advanced notice to us and with no answers. the owner of Gippers refused to come out and talk with our family and hid in the kitchen. I hope that the owner feels very proud of himself that he turned down a funeral service, as he was too scared to address our family, as well as a huge amount of business and future business lost. The chicken tenders are amazing (I've tried the garlic and Parmesan, sweet Asian- my favorite, buffalo, and mango habanero- very good but VERY spicy!). Service is excellent. This is the #1 Sports bar in all of Androscoggin. Plenty of TVs and games on throughout the day. The food is great and all their menu items are named after a professional athlete. Their portions are huge and to some it's considered two meals in one. This place is always packed after 5pm on most days so if you have a good size group you best have someone show up early. This is a must stop for al people who are passing through the area. The cooks, waiting staff and bartenders are all very pleasant and will remember you if you become a frequent visitor. I'm not sure how this place was marked as kid friendly. There are TVs that may catch a child's attention (if they like sports) and the noise level is mid range so you don't have to make your kid be silent. Those are the only two "friendly" parts to it. My son wanted chocolate milk. Nope. I asked if they had any paper place mats and crayons (or anything to keep a kid busy). Nope. I asked if there was a kids menu. Nope. She said the entrees were large and my 3 year old could easily share off my dish and they'd only charge a "couple of bucks" to give him a share plate. You're kidding right? I don't want to buy a $12-$15 meal for a 3yr old so you're going to charge me extra to share with him? I ended up ordering him a side of noodles with butter and cheese. They charged me $5.99 for a small bowl of basically plain pasta. There was maybe two shreds of cheese on it. Most people would toss it in Parmesan. Nope. My daughter's chicken fingers were chewy and all of our food was under seasoned. The only thing that was middle of the road was the pastrami sandwich. In the end, my two meals and a side of pasta plus drinks ran me $48 off when the tip and everything was done. Ridiculous! I won't be back. read more

If I have a craving for French fries, this is the number one spot. The staff are fantastic and many of them remember my dietary restrictions even though we don't go in for months at a time. First time at Gippers. The place was busy and seemed to be filled with regulars. We came to Gippers based upon the ratings on Yelp and we were not disappointed. This restaurant is one of those ... "Woah look what I found" types of places. You don't realize this little place is a nice little sports bar with some good pub food and some fresh cold beer. As you walk in, you will find that there are lots of Boston/New England style sports memorabilia laid out all over the walls of this place. It has a very open seating plan with all of the tables right next to each other but also has an area that you can take a large party or corporate function to. Our party of 5 started off with an order of wings and some potato skins .... the wings were very good and the skins were not the greatest in the world but was tasty nonetheless. For my meal I had the pastrami on rye bread and it was both delicious and hearty. The fries were hand cut and fresh also. The waitress was super friendly and seemed to know everyone in the building from people in suits to those in some worn down Dickeys. She did a great job in not only being friendly but also knew exactly what to recommend and took the specific needs of our party and delivered them all with excellence. My husband and I have been coming here since they opened. In the beginning the food was great and we always had good service. For years we enjoyed eating here. As time went on we starting trying other restaurants but we always came back to Gipper's. A few years ago before COVID we noticed a decline in the quality of the food and we would stop going for awhile and then go try it again. A couple of times it was alright. Well tonight we were out and he suggested we try Gipper's again. The place was busy but no waiting line and we have stood in line many times. We sat at one of the tables when you first come in. A waitress from the other side of the room came over with menus and we ordered our drinks. It took about 15 minutes to get them and I gave her our order. It was the Bruschi burger which is 3/4 of a pound but it looked like just a regular burger. I asked for medium and how much pink it would be and she said a lot and suggested med well. I ordered the medium because I was afraid it would be well done and guess what? Medium ended up being completely cooked and burnt. I ordered French fries and baked beans for my sides. There was about 10 French fries on the plate. It's not like potatoes are costly. I will say that the baked beans were very good. I split this cheeseburger with my husband because we are getting older and don't eat as big a meal as we used to. When the waitress finally came over from the other side of the room to see how things were I said not good and held up my half of the cheeseburger and asked her"Does this look pink to you?" Of course it didn't and I mentioned how we got only a handful of French fries. She went and talked to someone and came back and offered to get us another one. We both said no as we didn't want to wait for them to cook another one. My husband took 2 bites and said he couldn't eat it. I ate most of my half because I was hungry but left the burnt edge. Then we had to ask the receptionist to get our waitress so we could pay our bill. We did tip our waitress because it was the cooks fault not her's. I think the manager should have come over and at least taken 1/2 off our bill but they didn't. We will not be going back there again. I gave this a 2 star rating because the baked beans were as good as they always have been. read more

I totally forgot about Gippers until I went here with my cousins yesterday. Because this place is in a plaza in Auburn (as opposed to in a seedy part of Lewiston), it's easy to overlook. But make no mistake, Gippers is a quality townie/local bar with inexpensive beverages and great bar food. I was surprised that on Christmas Eve day, Gipper's was packed (then I realised that it was ridiculous to be surprised, being there myself). Things were in full tilt when I met my cousins at 3pm. I ordered a somewhat expensive Miller light bottle, and then realised there were a variety of less expensive beers I could have chosen from, so stick to Canadian beers or Budweiser if you can. I had already eaten, but my compatriots ordered food, and they raved about it. My one cousin used to bartend here, and said she always comes back for the food - they ordered a couple sandwiches and their kids shared the buffalo chicken tenders. Yum. I just love the whole affect of this place - it's super super local, comfy, and my cousin, a fire fighter, was saying hi to all the people he knew. It reminds me of my neighborhood bar in Columbus, only a lot bigger. No pretenses, just good food, good drinks, and good people. Oh, and you could easily just come here for lunch or dinner and not drink at all. Although, I have to say, while I was at the bar ordering a beer, I had an amusing conversation with a townie about cough syrup and why you have to be IDed to buy it.
