I really hope all of Newton was not feeling what we were feeling today. Whoa! 3 out of my 4 guests where keeled over. I don't believe that it was food poisoning, but I do believe that it was an excessive amount of oil and grease . Maybe for the holiday they brought in extra help because they anticipated being so busy, and these chefs were not as capable as the normal chef. Trust me, I didn't expect much when I entered this small establishment. I'm literally slowly making my way around the "Chinese" spots around the area until I've tried them all. I wasn't expecting anything and definitely not expecting any form of "service" as it *is* a Chinese spot. Yet, she spoke to me. She reached out and conversed in a manner that only this culture could really explain. She wanted to know me and why I was even here in this area. One eyebrow up, I explained. Two eyebrows up, almost an hour later, I still explained. All I knew was that she welcomed me and wanted me to feel home. There was nothing else past that. It's just the culture. It's Chinatown outside Chinatown, and Chinatown outside China (and everything else associated with it). They take the time to purchase produce on behalf of their customers at close to cost price. They take the time to welcome people in. I'm one of them - out of place, out of the element - and she gave me almost an hour of her time. She even apologized for the "yellowness" of my order due to the time it sat there while we conversed BUT I simply told her I'd see her again. Her family welcomed me to Massachusetts. And moments later when I dug in to the food I brought home, I knew home was here. They served up some seriously legit Chinese influenced dishes. BEST PART? The posted menu is only a front. How do I know this? She read me and invited me shortly to the private chat group for the daily cuisine specials directed at those wanting to taste home. There is some legit culinary techniques here. I'd voyage more into it but I'll respect the secrecy of it all. Come with respect, explain a genuine intent to partake, and perhaps, you'd be invited to the ball of a lifetime. I had just driven for 5 hours from New York in torrential rain. Was searching for a Lobster roll or anything with New England Lobster. Somehow my Yelp search found Lobster Wok as one of the nearest restaurants. I was hungry and just wanted the nearest place. The woman behind the counter has been extremely rude to me each and every time. While I am talking to her asking questions about the menu she routinely walks away from me without the decency of saying anything, not even excuse me. Could tell it wasn't sitting around. Loved the Peking ravioli. So good. Sweet and sour chicken comes with the sauce on the side. No need to ask. That's great in my book. Wonton soup was so good, mainly because the wontons were firm . They didn't seem like they had been sitting in broth for 12 hours. I like them firm. This was probably one of the best wonton soups I've had... not the top. My only complaint was the lack of green onion and pork strips in the soup. They should add that to make this the best ever. CONS: None so far. I'll be back to order some more chicken dishes to see how good the basic meat quality is for staple dishes like chicken with broccoli. OVERALL: Very good for take out Chinese food. Hark, what be that angelic sound? I think it's a heavenly host singing of the delicious fare of Lobster Wok. I have been on a 9-year quest for good Chinese food. It's been a harrowing journey, full of false promises, abandoned hopes, and bland fried rice. Lobster Wok is out by Newton but delivers to the Cleveland Circle area, and thank goodness it does. Undaunted by my recent disappointments elsewhere, I recently ordered some General Tso's with pork fried rice and chicken teriyaki ($11) as well as an appetizer combination for sampling purposes that included crab rangoons, beef teriyaki, egg rolls, and boneless spare ribs ($10). I have to say, even grading separate from my recent "meh" experiences, this is darn good food. Highlights: --The pork fried rice is flavorful and full of actual chunks of pork. --The G.T. chicken seasoning is just right (sweet with a kick), and it isn't too heavily breaded. --The chicken teriyaki is juicy, tender, and SO SO GOOD. Seriously, you should absolutely try this. --Beef teriyaki is also tender and delicious. --The egg rolls are... fine. They aren't the best ones ever for me (too much cabbage), but they're generally cooked to the right crispness. --Crab rangoon is basic, but very tasty. --The boneless spare ribs melt in my mouth and haunt my dreams. So goooood. I've now ordered from here a couple times, and the quality has been consistently excellent. So in terms of the food, I will throw down the gauntlet and say that this is the best you're likely going to find in the area, bar none. That said, I am docking one star because on one occasion, my food straight-up never arrived. I ordered on GrubHub and got a confirmation that the restaurant received the order, and I was charged for it. But my delivery window came and went, and because I ordered fairly close to closing time, I had to work with GrubHub rather than the restaurant to get a refund and sort the whole thing out (and had to figure out a plan B for dinner at 11:15 at night). My go-to take out place. It is cool seeing a family owned restaurant where the children help out in the restaurant too. I always get the lobster sauce, which was greasy, yet so delicious. Make sure you also get the chicken fingers! I hate when the ratio from chicken to batter is off, but they do a good job with adding big chunks of chicken. The food is just terrific and you can get all the standard dishes you expect from a Chinese take out restaurant on the east coast...fried rice, lo mien, dumplings, chicken wings, and so many other dishes. 've been to Lobster Wok twice getting takeout. The food is pretty good, although the service each time was not very friendly. Tonight I ordered online using their website and went to pick it up. Upon arrival, I saw a notice posted on their front door that they were closed on vacation and won't reopen until 8/23! There was no notice on their website that they were closed until the 23rd and when I googled the restaurant, it says Open until 10 pm! Now I have to wait until tomorrow to put a dispute in with my bank and was inconvenienced by having to spend more time out ordering from another restaurant. There are also coupons listed on their website you should check out before ordering. Some say free scallion pancakes with order of $30, and they won't include it for you automatically. So I ordered from them via foodler earlier (they had a 20% off coupon). I got the 'House Pan Fried Noodles.' They're supposed to come with shrimp, scallops, chicken and vegetables. Mine came with chicken, beef, and 1 shrimp. It tasted good, and they boxed it separately but I paid for and was expecting shrimp and scallops. Instead I got 1 shrimp and 0 scallops. The crab rangoons had a ton of scallions and onions in them. I've come to expect next to 0 crab in crab rangoons nowadays but I didn't expect it to be full of crunchy scallions and carrots. I just wasn't a fan. The chicken teriyaki was decent. I liked the first 2 sticks, but then the 3rd one was all gristle. Gross. I was done with my meal after that. Don't expect quality customer service if you are ordering delivery. I ordered with a group to be delivery to my university at 6:20 pm. They estimated it to be 45-60 minutes (not bad). Calling at 7:35, we were confirmed that our food was out for delivery. At 8:20 pm we called again and was told that another university had more people order after us so they never made our food (lying to us when we first called) and they sent their food out to be delivered. We asked for a new estimate of when our food would be delivered and they told us they couldn't tell us. First and last time... PS I made a yelp account specifically for this. Ok, I'm normally pretty picky (read my other reviews) but this place is not nearly as bad as the other reviews indicate. I've had the pork fried rice, general tso's and crab rangoon. All of the above have been as good as I've had in delivery chinese. My only gripe is that they advertise Coke on Foodler and delivered Pepsi. I've made this order twice and been please both times. This particular time I sent instructions for them to come up the 3 floors of my apartment because I'm injured and the guy came up quickly. All in all, solid chinese delivery. read more
