Stopped in for one last lunch before bidding the Boston area adieu. My sister lives in Stoneham and suggested this spot, thinking it would have something for everyone in our crew. The menu? Vast. Like, "do-I-need-a-compass-to-navigate-this" vast, with plenty of options. It's always amusing to me how different parts of the U.S. have their own regional food quirks (like here in MA, where steak tips, roast beef sandwiches, and open-faced turkey sammies reign supreme). I was stuck between a couple of local specialties, but our delightful waitress, Haley, steered me in the direction of the Thanksgiving turkey sandwich, mentioning they roast a turkey every day (cue angels singing). I swapped out the fries for onion rings, because, duh! This sandwich? It could have fed a small village. It was a beast. A delicious beast, but an unwieldy one. I ended up abandoning the bread for the good stuff and tackled it with a knife and fork. All in all? Absolutely scrumptious. Bonus points for the bathrooms, which were clean as a whistle, and fear not! If you're afraid of missing the a Celtics 3 pointer or a Red Sox baseball toppling over the "green monstah" while nature calls, there's a giant screen perfectly viewable from the toilet. Exactly what we were looking for. Great bar, great service, and the food was top notch.

There were 5 of us. All got different items. All the food was excellent. Menu was fantastic. Service was awesome. Can't say enough good things. Pricing was very reasonable. Liked it so much the first time that we went back again. This time there were four of us. One got the chicken wings and the other got the cheese stick sub. They both love them. The other two, myself included, the Tips sub. It was terrible. The meat was so chewy you could hardly even cut it. We had such a good experience the first time, but I was very disappointed with this time and I wish I mentioned it while I was there, but I did not want to embarrass the other two that were with us. read more

Local 438 has a Mary problem. One of the worst bartenders I've ever encountered. Was in there a few weeks ago and she told me and my friend to calm down at bar when we're debating sports (no swearing or inappropriate language). Fast forward to tonight and she did the same thing - told me I was being too loud at the bar when everything was fine. Told her it was a bar not a library and she mocked me that I was being a baby. Will NEVER go to Local 438 again (live in the area and go there twice a month at a minimum) and will make sure to spread the word. And for the record, some random guy next to me earlier in night said when Mary doesn't like you, she's incredibly unpleasant and unprofessional. So I know it's not just me. Delayed review, but we go so often! We went last Wednesday before thanksgiving and started with their potato skins. They were good, but some a little too crispy. I finally got to try their short rib sliders and OH MY GOD. They were amazing. Run to get these! They were extremely tender and flavorful. May be the only thing I get now on. Their tator tots are very yummy too. My husband got the meatball sliders and was extremely happy with the flavors and the sauce was tasty too. He would not recommend the onion rings. They were very bland. The bartenders are always very friendly and check in often. It can get crowded at times, but we usually find a good spot at the bar. This is such a hidden gem in Stoneham! My boyfriend and I were looking for a chill sports bar to watch the suberbowl and found this place on google and decided to give it a try. We got the bbq wings, potato skins, and a cheese pizza. Everything was delicious! The pizza especially was SO good. I was truly not expecting such great food! The draft beers were also super cheap - around $6.50! They also had mini tvs at a bunch of tables so every seat is a great spot to watch a game. We will absolutely be back! read more

I have returned to 438 after visiting some 6 years prior. This day I visited with my daughter and her friend. It was an early afternoon in mid-December. Upon entry, we saw that the restaurant was relatively quiet. A few customers at the bar watching some ballgames and a few booths occupied by couples. We were immediately seated at a table with several tv's around us. There was not a bad seat in the room if you wanted to watch the ball games. We were approached pretty quickly by our waiter and asked if we wanted a drink. We all ordered water and a soft drink. As we all reviewed the menu, we noticed how many different choices there were for lunch! It was great.... all sorts of appetizers, salads, main dishes and side dishes. Something for everyone! I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich with some fries. My daughter ordered the same thing and my daughters friend got a burger with nothing on it. The split a caesar salad, as well. The food came rather quickly, which was great. We split some chicken fingers for an app and we polished them off right at the same time our main dishes came. All three dishes were excellent. French fries were good and chicken sandwich on my plate was excellent. The one negative thing that I would mention and it is not a big deal, is that the chicken was kind of thin. It was well cooked for both my daughter and I but the pieces were on the thin side. Again, no a big deal but a mention. We finished up our meal and decided on no dessert so we were on our way out the door rather quickly. We all enjoyed our visit......food was good...service was good and price was great! A very disappointing experience! My friend recommended the place after having previously been there for a good meal. Well, no 'good meals' were had yesterday! After a short wait to be seated, the hostess brought us to our table but did not bring any menus! We had to wait 5-10 minutes for the waitress to come by, but she didn't stop, she just wanted to tell us she would be right back. She did not return for at least 5 more minutes. In the meantime, one of us went to the entrance and got menus. Our other friend, visiting from out of town ordered a cheeseburger, medium rare with fries. It came out very rare and was sent back. It was returned a second time in the same very rare state and had to be sent back to the kitchen again!!! Another of us ordered steak tips medium rare. They were also served extremely rare and had to be sent back to the kitchen. They returned cooked medium well !!! I ordered a haddock sandwich with mashed potatoes and coleslaw. The mashed potatoes were advertised on the menu as cheddar and chive and the waitress mentioned they had garlic as well. They were served with bits of something pink in them, which seemed like undercooked bacon but they were too tiny to identify. They didn't taste good and I couldn't eat them. Additionally, there weren't any visible chives. This lack of adequate description could be a real problem for someone with food allergies or sensitivities. To make matters worse, we were told the cheeseburger would be comped by the waitress, only to be told later by the 'hostess' that they couldn't do that because she eventually ate the burger! Before Covid on a Wednesday night had to send Filet Migmon back three times; it came out Pittsburg not near rare .Recently, sat outside but the exhaust from people picking up at Three Amigos. Our pictures were taken because I went into Three Amigos to tell them to tell customers to shut engines off while people are dining outside next door. Well, I will not tell you how unprofessional the manager (owners sis) was. Taking our picture when leaving. Food is really hit or miss . Overheard a customer say usually the mash potatoes aren't as good as they were tonight. Baked potato skins were microwaved last night. Par baked then microwaved. I called the landscaping trucks that was running while they were waiting for good from Three Amigos. He told me I had too much wine. One glass. Ignorant. Kept truck running for 15 minutes. 438 should have done more. Stop reusing menus. Delete picture we will not be back. read more

This was my favorite go to Pub/restaurant until May 4, 2025. I had a good friend in town and 3 of us (upon my recommendation) went to the Local 438 in Stoneham for an early dinner. We ordered our food and the dinner's arrived, what a disaster/disappointment . Turns out two of our meals were completely undercooked. One dinner was a hamburger and fries. My dinner was a side salad and steak tips. Both the hamburger and steak tips were rare, they were ordered, medium rare. My steak tips were sent back once , and when I got them back they were overcooked they were medium well. My friends hamburger was returned a total of two times , both times her burger was sent back RARE !!! So on the third time her burger was medium well, fries were ICE cold. We had two people that were serving us, a waitress and the hostess. The waitress told us the burger and fries would be taken off the bill, then the hostess brought out our bill and said well she ate the burger so we're charging her, I stated her fries are cold ( it took over 45 minutes to get our two meals (now overcooked). While our friend sat there with her meal waiting for our meals to arrive. We stated that our experience was totally unacceptable. We all were shocked, that the hostess( suspected owner) was arguing with us, that my friend ate her burger so she was being charged! The hostess just walked away, SERIOUSLY??? I will NOT be a customer again at Local 438 in Stoneham!!! read more

A few days ago, I saw a recommendation for Local 438 steak tips. It got my mouth watering and I wanted to get dinner one night this weekend, giving My wife and I a respite. We ended up with steak tips (really, those who recommended them aren't kidding - they *are* delicious). I tried some wings-those were good, too. Our older teenage daughter was thinking between burgers and pizza, so we ended up with a cheeseburger pizza. Thankfully, it does not come with pickles - he he. She gave us no eye rolls about the food and we even saw a smile, so that counts as success! Sadly, the pizza did not reduce the sibling rivalry at dinner and proverbial daggers were being flung across the table anyway. We also got salads - after all, vegetables are yummy and keep us happy. The goat cheese and pear salad with a raspberry vinaigrette dressing. Just lick your lips. Yum. The house salad was full of veggies. Sadly, there weren't many vegetarian GF options for our younger daughter. I talked with management and perhaps they will add options in the future. Overall, I was impressed and will be back. My husband and I finally got here for date night the other night and were super impressed! We were promptly seated and the outdoor seating is plentiful so if you are hesitant to dine indoors, there are plenty of options here. My del monico steak was cooked to perfection, the Cesar and house salad were fresh and the steak tips were flavorful and tender in a solid BBQ based marinade. The old fashioned I ordered was spot on and my husbands dirty martini was just the right amount of dirty. Finally, our waitress Kaylee was the icing on the cake! I've come here more times than I care to admit and the food is consistently very good. After all my visits, I somehow hadn't tried a burger and I was definitely missing out. Stopped in during lunch and ordered a bacon burger and it was one of the better meals I've had in a long time. The lunch menu is very affordable; burgers with fries for $8-9 and very reasonably priced appetizers. My personal favorite is the wall of hot sauces that has a great variety of things you won't find anywhere else. Welcome to one of the only redeeming qualities of Stoneham, MA...Local 438 Grille and Sport. Tucked off the main drag in Stoneham, make sure you "pre Tum" before walking in the door. They have, bar none in the area, the best "pile" of wings you are going to find. In my travels I haven't found many better than Local. Maybe two or three spots top it barely, but they're going to give you enough to put you to sleep and subsequently wake you up with heartburn at 3 am. Is it a huge place place with white table cloths and people discussing the rise and fall of the Nasdaq? No. Do you want your wing place to be as such, hell no. Go for a game, there's plenty of tvs per foot, and make sure you come hungry and thirsty. By now if you've read a few of my reviews, I'm no crazy foodie. Frankly, I have no damn idea what I am doing, but I like well poured beer and hearty food served by someone with a smirk and some attitude. Local 438 gives you all of these in spades. Their beer menu is sneaky the best in the area, and they deliver on their entire food menu too. I usually shy away from places with long menus because I have the attention span of a golden doodle and can barely read American, but they have yet to miss. From salads, to a well done pie, to steak tips, and yes (again) wings, Local has never missed. Whether you want to slug Colorado Kool-Aid or find a niche IPA to check into OnTapped, this this is place to have it. We stopped in for a quick Friday night dinner at Local 438. Our first impressions were all positive - surprisingly huge and diverse beer list, robust menu with lots of pub-type options and tons of TVs (including one at each booth). We ordered beers, an appetizer and entrees. For our appetizer, we got the steak and cheese rolls, which we really enjoyed and thought were a good omen of things to come. Things went downhill from there... I ordered a burger and my wife ordered a steak tip salad. After about 25 minutes, the food still hadn't come out. Our waitress came by and let us know that the kitchen had put the wrong topping on the salad - no big deal. 10 minutes later, she came back again and said they were just waiting on the steak tips to be done. When the food eventually came out, my burger was lukewarm and the fries were cold. It had clearly been sitting out while they re-made my wife's salad - not sure why they didn't remake it or at least keep it under a heat lamp. Moreover, my wife's steak tips were pretty rare while she had ordered them medium. It was pretty clear they had tried to rush her order out at that point. Went earlier tonight. Great Nacho's.....burgers were average, filet sub with orange cheese was eh and the margarita flat bread was tasteless. The dining is a really tight for families. Overall just an average place to eat. The dining area also looked kind of weathered in need of updates to the carpet and really could use a thorough cleaning. read more
