I never even noticed this alleyway lunch spot on Leidesdorff even though I work on the next block. That's because I stride onto bustling California Street with that typical blinders-on hubris for which the FiDi proletariat is renowned. Initially I shrugged at the prospect of another build-a-bowl place, but I noticed they had quite a few more options than its nearby competitors Homegrown and Torshi Mexiterranean and it was a bit less hectic than Mendocino Farms. Bowls, bowls, everywhere bowls. The multiphase ordering was daunting, but I managed to conquer my phobia for procedure and ordered the $9.25 base of Baby Spinach and picked Superfood for my style. That meant the spinach was mixed with roasted sweet potato, kale, caramelized onions, broccoli, avocado, goji berries, and toasted almonds, tossed in a slightly sweetened fig dressing. For an additional $2.95, I asked for the Chickpea Loaf, which was delicious and probably the closest I've been to a slice of meatloaf in several years (photo: http://bit.ly/2ZdqQJr). It was all pretty satisfying with the wintry flavors matching the inclement weather well. But this one has a universe of ingredients: lettuce, mixed greens, mushroom, carrots, brussel sprouts, red onion, bacon bites, beans, and chicken! I'm a casual carnivore who prefers veggies and got the Harvest on warm grains as an alternative to salad (you can ask to hold the bacon and Parmesan). This review is solely for the Local Harvest salad. It was very bland. The chicken was dry. The avocado dressing was creamy without any parrticular flavor. The Brussels sprouts were hard and tasted raw and had the harsh Brussels flavor. It was a a bowl of sadness. It needed a heavy dose of salt and flavor in general. I've honestly made this my go-to lunch spot because the food here is amazing AND healthy at a reasonable cost. I've constantly ordered my lunches through ritual (definitely a time saver) and it's always correct. I remember being curious about this spot since this restaurant is in a tiny alley way, but I never really grew the confidence to come here until I found it on ritual. I ended up ordering the steak sandwich the first time and I enjoyed it, but there was something a bit off about the sandwich (the sauce I chose) that didn't mesh cohesively. From that point on, I've been utilizing the Mix and Match 2 sides and I've been adding a protein. It's such a great deal because you can choose between either 2 or 3 sides ($7.95 for 2 sides and $10.95 for 3 sides). The portions are HUGE as well, which is another plus because healthy food is hard to come by at a lower cost. I've been absolutely loving the Forbidden Black Rice with scallions and Garlic, alongside the Cesaresque Salad (Cesar salad with chopped Brussels sprouts, Cesar dressing, cheese, and croutons) and the sweet potato hash. The protein however, is an additional $2.95-$4.95 depending on what you get. For proteins, I've tried the chicken and the steak and they're well seasoned. I would say that the portions for the meats are a bit on the smaller side (depends who's preparing your meal that day), but after devouring the sides I picked out, I'm usually full by the end of my meal. I would definitely recommend this place if you're tired of eating a bit unhealthy (especially working in the Financial District where lunch gets quite expensive sometimes). The initial plan was to eat at Mendocino- next door, seeing the queue we decided to try Local Roots. Local roots is tucked away from the main street. With ample seating space, this place seems inviting especially in an area like FiDi. Their salad bowl is different from the usual fare. Besides salad bowls, they have sandwiches, burritos and some shakes to offer. I tried the salad bowls here. I chose the super food bowl. For the base they had: quinoa, mixed grains, barley and rice to offer. Topped with broccoli, marinated veggies, sautéed sweet potatoes etc. I loved the toppings of shaved almonds, goji berries and fig dressing. There were artichokes, Brussels sprouts, chickpea burger and a bunch of other options to chose from. The pricing is reasonable. Their Togo box is quite nice as well. I've been to Local Roots for both breakfast and lunch. They're located in the alleyway between Pine and California and they have bright yellow cafe chairs out front so you can't miss them. When you walk in, you see the cashier, but you actually want to order at the other end of the counter with the chefs first. This was confusing the first time I came here, but the staff members were really nice and explained what to do. Personally, I think it would be great if they had a sign that said "Order Here." On to the food. I've tried their bagel with light cream cheese (yummy! nothing extraordinary, but I do like that you can order it with almond butter for a non-dairy option); breakfast sandwich (best part was that it wasn't greasy even with bacon and cheese. I could eat this every day even though I shouldn't); and their 3-plate option with Brussels sprouts, sweet potato hash, and root vegetable salad (sprouts are spicy and everything tastes pretty healthy and hearty. You may need a protein or sauce to break it up a bit.) Looking forward to trying more things on their menu. Top level: Worth a try, but would not say it is persistently worth it. So I have had the pesto chicken sandwich and the coop sandwich. On top of the sandwiches, I have tried the make your own bowl with two sides and a meat. I always get chicken which in my opinion is pretty cold/bland. In terms of sides the sweet potato hash is usually undercooked so I stopped getting it. That being said, the caesar salad and the black rice are pretty good and have never had any complaints with it.
