This is my second here at Local Roots! Love the service, food, and chill ambiance. I got the superfood bowl and check out the massive portion- hard to beat in Fidi.

I ordered takeout & I thought that the salad had a good amount of toppings and taste for the price. The crispy chickpeas and artichokes were my favorite. The salad was well dressed and had great flavor. Would definitely recommend for a lite filling lunch option.

I just moved to a new office next to this place. California Curry Salad $10.95 (+Tuna Tataki $4.75) - 2.5 stars. Cauliflower was great. Rice stale. Tuna was not fresh. Thu lunch 2023-02-16.

A friend and I chose this spot for a workday lunch because it seemed healthy and well-reviewed. I thought my food was ok, but maybe I ordered the wrong thing and would be willing to give this another try. Price was average for downtown (which is a little pricey to me, $18.14 total for a single serving). It was empty at 11:30am on a Thursday in February. But people were quickly arriving and there was a small line soon to order. There were always tables available. * California Curry Salad $10.95 (+Tuna Tataki for an extra $4.75) - 2.5 stars I chose this because the cooked cauliflower looked (and was!) delicious, but they gave me so little (maybe a couple pieces) and I had to ask for a little more. The rice was a little stale. They did sear the tuna fresh (I had to wait a little) but it was overall dry and fresh, which was the biggest disappointment of this meal.

I never even noticed this alleyway lunch spot on Leidesdorff even though I work on the next block. That's because I stride onto bustling California Street with that typical blinders-on hubris for which the FiDi proletariat is renowned. Initially I shrugged at the prospect of another build-a-bowl place, but I noticed they had quite a few more options than its nearby competitors Homegrown and Torshi Mexiterranean and it was a bit less hectic than Mendocino Farms. Bowls, bowls, everywhere bowls. The multiphase ordering was daunting, but I managed to conquer my phobia for procedure and ordered the $9.25 base of Baby Spinach and picked Superfood for my style. That meant the spinach was mixed with roasted sweet potato, kale, caramelized onions, broccoli, avocado, goji berries, and toasted almonds, tossed in a slightly sweetened fig dressing. For an additional $2.95, I asked for the Chickpea Loaf, which was delicious and probably the closest I've been to a slice of meatloaf in several years (photo: http://bit.ly/2ZdqQJr). It was all pretty satisfying with the wintry flavors matching the inclement weather well. I came back a few days later to have the $9.25 Kale Salad with the California Curry, which consisted of broccoli, harissa cauliflower, chickpeas, artichoke, tomato, spiced cashews, and golden raisins, drizzled with a curry-yogurt dressing. And yes, I topped it off with the $2.95 Chickpea Loaf yet again (photo: http://bit.ly/2tvECep). Another tantalizing combination of flavors. Yep, I think I've found another go-to lunch spot when I'm in a hurry, at least until the Amazon Go reopens. FOOD - 4 stars...really like the combo of ingredients they offer over a salad AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...pretty generic but spacious enough, looks like every other FIDi lunch spot SERVICE - 3.5 stars...nice enough and pretty fast TOTAL - 4 stars...building a bowl is better than building a bear (I don't know what that means) RELATED - Fiddling around in the FIDi? All ingredients are very healthy and clean and unprocessed. You will either really like or dislike a dish depending on how much you like the ingredients. Harvest salad 5/5 The salads you get from elsewhere usually only have a few I ingredients. But this one has a universe of ingredients: lettuce, mixed greens, mushroom, carrots, brussel sprouts, red onion, bacon bites, beans, and chicken! Breakfast chicken bowl 4/5 A healthy breakfast bowl with a Mexican twist. Chickpea loaf with local roots 2/5 Maybe it's just personal preference but I didn't really like this mix and match plate. The chickpea loaf tasted kind of weird. I couldn't tell its chickpea. Didn't like the beets and carrots part either. The only portion I liked was the diced sweet potato with kale. Wish there was more kale.

Great lunch option. Very fresh ingredients and interesting salad styles. I got the kale base w curry style and chicken, but would probably try another flavor next time as I did not like this one that much. Huge portions, fair pricing! Staff is very kind and peppy; they seem to have a lot of regulars.

a salad and a cup of coffee

Ordered takeout through corporate Sharebite. Got their - Chopped style salad, curly kale base - ($12) -- delicious salad packed with toppings tidily in six square grids. Avocado, bacon, bleu cheese, and more. See the photo! One of the top value lunch salads I've had so far! - Soup of the day (creamy tomato), bowl ($5.75) -- warm and creamy A nit is I called them to inquire what the soup of the day was, and it took a few iterations for me to understand what the staff member was saying.

Locally Rooted Salad with flat iron steak
    Elizabeth C.

Generous portions and reasonably priced considering other options in the area. I had the locally rooted salad with flat iron steak, dressing on the side. I hardly had to use any of the dressing because the salad was already tasty without it! The flat iron steak was tender and not dry. Lots of tables available and clean. Service was friendly and efficient.

Forgot to take a pic of salad. Remembered to take pic of brownie.

New, new killer lunch place. It's new and new to me. Get there before the crowds know about it. Despite its hidden an alley location, I'm calling it - Local Roots is going to be hot. I love salads. I eat one every single day for lunch. Yes, every day. Local Roots has better options than Mixt and Sweetgreen and all the like (maybe not the newly opened Mendocino Farms). Why it's awesome: - Other than salads they have sandwiches, breakfast meals, protein shakes, cookies, soup, bowls and side dishes - The salad options are awesome because they go beyond the typical fare. They take their awesome side dishes and basically put them in the salads. You can choose between a bowl or salad. I got the salsa fresca salad sub in sweet potatoes. Bad and good: I did not like the dressing and they claim the black beans are "spicy" on the menu, and they are not. Otherwise, bomb. The avocado was perfectly ripe, and NOBODY can argue with a perfectly creamy, ripe avo. Coming back! Again. For sure.

Warm grains, Harvest, plus chickpea loaf. Enough food for two -- heavy as any Mission burrito!
    Grace C.

Pleasantly surprised at the flavors and portion size. I'm a casual carnivore who prefers veggies and got the Harvest on warm grains as an alternative to salad (you can ask to hold the bacon and Parmesan). The flavors were tasty without being overbearing and I had lunch for two days. I liked that you can choose two different grains and that it was clean (not laden with oil) but satisfying. Definitely will be back! - - - - 11/16/18 Had the Green a Warrior for second breakfast today and it was delicious! LOVE it. Not at all sweet, which is a rare find in smoothies. Just the good stuff. And for about the same price, Joe & the Juice had a portion half the size and not nearly the nutritional density.

But when you want a sandwich that only tastes like its ingredients, Irving Subs is the spot. Their Dutch crunch is famous for being fresh and actually crunchy. Their lettuce is shredded but fresh and crispy. The salt content is just enough to bring out the flavors. And the overall composition of their sandwiches are very well proportioned. You're not getting skimped, but you're also not biting into a mouthful of a packet of deli meat. They definitely know what they are doing. Back then, there were sliced cucumbers in the sandwich. I finally returned again recently and tried the Giants sandwich (turkey, cheddar, thick cut bacon, avocado) and Goodfellas (salami, mild coppa, prosciutto, provolone, pesto sauce). The Goodfellas was a bit too salty with the meats + pesto sauce. I think more lettuce/tomatoes/red onions and slightly less meats would've helped balance it out better. I had requested extra red onions, but it looked like the same amount as the other sandwich we got with no extra onions. Also was not a big fan of their pesto. We both preferred the Giants, which was relatively more balanced, but it was still not a very exciting sandwich. The primary flavor was salt, with only a few bites of sourness from the pickles, yet it also gave the overall impression of blandness. The house garlicky mayo didn't have any noticeable garlicky-ness. I also couldn't taste any of the brown mustard or house vinaigrette. The Dutch crunch bread was quite dry and both thin and dense. It looked so good in the pics since it's so stacked with colorful ingredients, but it did not pull through in terms of flavor. Halfway through I was just eating it to fill my belly with sustenance rather than enjoying it (though I didn't hate it either). Prices still seem pretty reasonable for the portion size; that would probably be the main draw for me if I ever return again. Maybe I will give the November sandwich one more shot next time.

A San Francisco classic done right. The San Franpsycho: it normally comes with honey turkey, but they had rotisserie chicken on the spit so I swapped it in. Gouda, bacon, pesto, garlic spread, and remoulade. The pesto comes through right away and the chicken tastes like real rotisserie. Fair warning: it is messy. It drips. Do not eat this in the car.
