    The Giants
    Austin W.

I ordered "The Giant" on Uber Eats on a Sunday afternoon around 12:40 p.m. and the wait for the sandwich was an estimated 45 minutes. Oftentimes the estimate in the app is not particularly accurate, so I went ahead and placed my order, expecting that it would be ready in 10 minutes or so. When I arrived at Irving Subs for pick-up, I immediately realized I should have trusted the estimate provided in app: there were cars doubled parked everywhere next to the restaurant, as well as a crowd of people waiting on the sidewalk for their sandwiches. Ultimately, the sandwich took exactly one hour to prepare. To be blunt, if you're in a rush, I would absolutely go elsewhere or order far, far, far in advance. "The Giant" sandwich I ordered included turkey, cheddar, thick cut bacon, and avocado on top of the standard toppings of lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, pickles, pepperoncinis, salt & pepper, house vinaigrette, mustard and mayo. Although the sub is not the longest and largest sub out there, it is stacked generously. Unlike pastrami spots that often create unbalanced monstrosities that are only stacked with meats and nothing else, the sandwich I had was perfectly balanced. Across the board, the ingredients were fresh and high quality: I loved the freshness of the Dutch crunch roll -- honestly one of the best I've had in recent memory, the creamy avocado had nice chunks in it for added texture, the crispy bacon was not-oily, and the pepperoncinis rounded out the sandwich with a nice brininess and spice. Each bite had just the right amount of moistness to it, without being overly messy. Five star sandwich, but minus one star for the extremely long wait times.

I was in the area due to hubby having surgery. I walked from the hospital and decided to drop in. The layout is pretty much a small counter with wifi sitting area. My sandwich was fresh and I was given a choice to have my bread roasted. I really liked that there is an actual room just doors down with a ping pong table and activity area for children. The customer service was good and parking can be hard.

I loves me pretty much anything on a fresh Dutch crunch roll, and they definitely provide a number of options at this modest sammie shop in the Inner Sunset. But sometimes I have those days when I pinch my gut and feel the need to curb my carb intake. No problem here as they have a tortilla wrap option. I must've been feeling real guilty because I ordered the $9.95 Loaded Veggie in a Tortilla Wrap. It was generously stuffed with avocado slices, shredded lettuce, cucumber slices, peperoncini, and roasted red peppers. Their house vinaigrette and garlicky mayo actually made it surprisingly satisfying for a self-induced mandate of guilt reduction (Photo 9). I was going to walk over to Golden Gate Park and find a random bench to devour my veggie sandwich. However, it turned out they have a dining room two doors down from the shop. It was well stocked with a big screen TV for sports viewing, a variety of toys for the kiddies, and a restroom. How convenient, and they make the space available as a private event rental. FOOD - 5 stars...really well-turned veggie wrap and it's big enough to satisfy AMBIANCE - 5 stars...the unexpected extra room is a definite plus SERVICE - 4 stars...quick and efficient TOTAL - 5 stars...a tasty reduced guilt veggie wrap is nothing to take for granted RELATED - Exploring the Sunset? I haven't been out for a sub sandwich in sometime. My last couple of disappointments were Panera and Jersey Mike's. TODAY however a cloud has lifted because I just snarked down this absolute amazing sandwich loaded with delectable fresh ingredients and one of the best pickled Jardinière's I've eaten in a long time. I vote best sandwich in San Francisco

I was in the sunset area recently to run some errands and was looking for place to grab a wick dinner. Came across Irving Subs. I ordered the Giants sandwich and the Nearly Reuben. The ingredients tasted fresh, the portions were generous, and the flavors hit the spot without feeling overly heavy. One thing that really stands out is the value. The pricing is great for what you get, especially considering the portion size and quality. It feels like a place you can come back to regularly without thinking twice. The setup is a bit unique. The seating area is actually located a couple doors down, and it can even be rented out for private parties, which is a nice touch if you are planning something casual with a group.

Great subs, good prices. Would definitely come back again. Ordered the "ten for ten" deal aka turkey, ham, cheese, lettuce and mayo for $10. Great portions for the price. Took this sandwich all the way through a hike, and it stayed crispy. Would definitely come back and try the other sandwiches on the menu.

Best sandwich in the area!! They pack their sandwiches tightly and they don't skimp on the fillings. All the flavors go together so well, and I especially love their garlic mayo + DUTCH CRUNCH! I'm happy the bread stayed crunchy, even after an hour when I ate it. They can get pretty busy on the weekends, so be prepared to wait around 20 minutes. I appreciate the wonderful service despite being busy.

It's been at least a decade since I've eaten Dutch crunch bread. I used to enjoy thick slices of it as a kid, and it was always a treat since I didn't get it very often, and it outshines a classic French loaf. As I got caught up with life, I nearly forgot about it until I moved to San Francisco last year and read an article by the SF Gate that claimed Dutch crunch is a regional specialty in Northern California. It suddenly made sense to me why I'd never seen it anywhere else. After reading the article, I eagerly looked up where I could find Dutch crunch bread in the city. I bookmarked a few spots to try but then again got busy. Now, finally, over the long weekend, I went on a foodie crawl along Irving and adjacent streets and spontaneously stopped in to order a sandwich to-go here. I really like how Irving Subs offers several vegan and vegetarian options. This was the top spot I wanted to try because of that reason. Sandwiches can be kind of heavy since they're loaded with ingredients, so I like to get mine with meat alternatives and lots of veggies. I ordered the soy spicy sandwich on a toasted Dutch crunch roll, and it was ready for pick-up at the takeout window bit later. When I got home, I quickly devoured half of it. It was so delicious! The tofu was nice and firm, and the bread was fresh and dense just the way I like it. I'm happy I found a great spot that combines a childhood treat I knew and loved with healthy ingredients that suit my current lifestyle.

Have been trying new sandwich spots and Irving Subs definitely has a lot of hype. Got the dutch crunch with house garlicky mayo, turkey, bacon, avocado and pesto sauce. Sandwich was a bit smaller than expected compared to other spots I've been to, but still a good size (def will fill you up). Flavor wise, it was a bit average -- didn't really excite me or anything but it wasn't bad. Maybe one of their signature sandwiches would have been a better pick.

    Goodfellas
    Val M.

These sandwiches were bomb! Both were nicely loaded up with meat. Love that the bacon is thick cut and perfectly crisp. The pesto on the Goodfellas was very subtle, I expected a little more but it was still super tasty. The meats and veggies all tasted so fresh. The bread of both sandwiches was great too! Great texture and filling to bread ratio. They also have a cool space next door where you can sit down to eat, watch a game on the tv, and even play some games like ping pong or board games. Would definitely recommend Irving Subs!

Vegan sandwhich with chicken and bacon

Despite coming in 10 minutes before close, the sandwhich artist was extremely kind and quickly created the biggest, yummiest vegan sandwhich ever. They also had a welcoming dinner area with games that provided a great vibe!

While I didn't get selected for tickets to the PGA Masters Golf Tournament, that's not going to stop me from making pimento cheese sandwiches at home. Sandy's sells this in a cup, pint, and I believe a quart size. I got a cup ($9) of their pimento cheese, and paired it with milk bread at home, and it was so tasty. Great texture, slightly spicy, really solid pimento cheese. A cup was enough to make 3-4 sandwiches at home. Great staple to have for a quick lunch at home. Egg salad, I got the pint ($16), this was really solid too, although I added some additional salt and pepper to taste. The pint is great for family, easily can make 5-6 sandwiches with the amount of a pint. Honestly a cup order would've been good for me. Egg salad is one of those things I don't want to make myself, so thankfully Sandy's sells theirs lol If you are looking for an affordable way to make tasty sandwiches at home, and like egg salad and pimento cheese like me, definitely worth checking out to satisfy the craving. They have them packaged up for take home, so was able to get in and out in less than a couple minutes.
