A short San Fran lunch break run allowed me to stumble on Mixiote. The menu is very abbreviated, which makes sense given the smaller worker population in SF financial district nowadays. It's Mexican fusion and I tried a little bit of everything in their menu. My bowl had both the chicken and pork along with the quinoa and beets and veggie noodles. It was flavorful and satisfying without making me feel like it will put me in a food coma. Chips come on the side. Limited seating, about 3 tables, are in-site. Mixiote is a small takeout cafe in the heart of the Financial District. It's hidden under the stairs in the Sephora building! Food was delicious and great value, more affordable compared to other lunch options in this area. Bowl also comes with sides of chips and salsa! Service was very quick and friendly. I ordered the chicken and rice bowl - the service was fast, the bowl looked great, the amount of chicken was generous, and the price was awesome. The free chips and salsa was a great bonus. The Mixiote bowls are absolutely incredible, and I can't get enough of their beet quinoa salad--pair it with any of the chicken, pork, or rajas con queso for a winning combination. Office days and rain don't always mix. Sometimes you need a quick lunch option while trying to stay dry, and that's how I ended up trying Mixiote. The menu is pretty straight forward, bowls, salads, nachos with your choice of meat and toppings. As a lover of all things rice, of course I went the the bowl. I went with the chicken which is made with thigh meat and cooked in a sauce so it wasn't dry which is always a plus. I dunno if this was healthy or healthy adjacent but judging from all the veggies and bright colors, I'm just gonna tell myself it is. Either way, it was a big enough portion for a normal appetite. The bowl price starts at $13.50 and with guac and other additional premium toppings it came out to just over $17 before tip. The chips they gave with the order were fresh, crunchy and really tasty. They had an orange salsa that was habanero, good amount of spice but not too crazy. If you can't handle spice, this one will prolly be too hot. A new food counter, well hidden in the back corner of the Salesforce lobby. So hard to stumble on randomly and even a little hard to find if you are actually looking for it. A bit Chitpole-esqe in that you choose your protein and choose your carbs. But much tasiter than Chiptole! Pork & Chicken Rice Bowl: I actually asked for a half-n-half mix of pork and chicken so I could try them both. I really liked the smoky red pepper sauce on the chicken. The green pepper sauce on the pork seemed a little more subtle and also the amount of sauce seemed less too. But both meats came in a good portion. The only surprising thing is that neither meat seemed particularly slowed cooked. The meat on their website looks more stewed. But still very tasty. Especially with all those nice veggies on top of that turmeric rice. read more

A solid lunch option, hidden away by a staircase in the Salesforce East building. They're only open for lunch Tuesday through Thursday, so make sure to check the hours (and the calendar!) before you go. My go to is the rice bowl with chicken, which doesn't look like that much food, but is actually very filling -- a side effect, perhaps, of the deep containers they use. I've also enjoyed the quinoa and salad bowls. They give a free bag of tortilla chips with your order, and offer both mild and spicy (habanero carrot!) salsas. I'm not kidding when I say these chips are the best takeout chips I've ever had. They experiment with other options sometimes as well, with a rice pudding, a soup, and a salad. Just be aware that because they're experimental, you should check what they're actually serving that day -- I recently received a beet & greens salad when I was expecting the fantastic kale salad from just a week earlier. Veggie noodles with pork - absolutely amazing! Took about 5mins to prepare and they had free cookies and coffee (both of which were wonderful). Servers were very kind and it's a cute little place to grab and go. Much quicker and more fresh than the food trucks across the street. Mixiote is located in the back of the lobby at Salesforce East or 350 Mission. The restaurant is family owned and Alma, the owner, and her two sons are so friendly and warm. They offer a simple menu of bowls and a few sides. I like both the chicken and pork bowls over the yellow rice. The chicken is a bit more spicy. They also give a free small bag of chips. The chips are delicious! The bowl looks small but it's actually a very hearty meal when you include the chips. I highly recommend Mixiote. Check it out and help this small business. read more
